Good day wherever you are and #welcime to #diversealz here to talk about goals, goal setting and dementia
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Before we start the #diversealz convo on goals, goal setting and dementia, let’s start with our #a2zdementia icebreaker naming a word beginning with G one can associate with dementia. Please say why and introduce yourself if you’d like .
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
@derekfisher2907 Goals scored by Arsenal or Everton (@TommyTommytee18) No. goals achieved by @3NDWG @DementiaAllianc @DementiaVoices YES! After all g is for groups. We’re talking dementia #diversealz

Dementia can be a relentless grind tweets @helenfindlay. Yes. The grinder can also be triumphant but the grind can also be so draining. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
G is for great tweets @derekfisher. Will add grateful. Think sometimes there is much to be grateful for and we do see great from many including those grind(ing) #diversealz

Two more minutes in the afternoon words - seems g is full of positives and we’ll start the chat. #diversealz what have you got?
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
G is for gift tweets @helenfindlay mentioning people with dementia who have said it has been a gift in some way. Now, see Glorious Opportunity and Dr Jennifer Bute’s work: https://t.co/Ex3GJKNtUK #diversealz #a2zdementia
Chuck @OrangeChuck
Joining #diversealz chat now. Hello all. My G word is generosity. I would have made it this far without the kindness & generosity of others. I thought for sure I could handle this myself but always better when others offer help or kind words at least. https://t.co/kKvBMgUKK9
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
We’ve had word grateful but see how eloquently @mumbythesea describes it with reference to her late mum who many of us got to know over time via Twitter #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Correction. Not gratitude but grateful via @mumbythesea which is even better #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
We can also be grateful to many people with dementia teaching us how to live - does that make sense? #pleaseworkitout #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Getting carried away with the G words but let’s start the chat. Keep the G words flowing though! #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Question 1 why set goals around dementia/care? #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE
RT @journeyofcareM: @DiverseAlz @ThatVDOVault @willow_lodge @Shedfieldlodge @BubblyNas #DiverseAlz Might be late/unable to join chat today, but goals are good to have & it helps if realistic/desirable to attain. My mother does simple exercises every day. The aim/goal is to keep her able to climb stairs. Stairs=sleeping in her own bedroom. That's her motivation.
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE
RT @DiverseAlz: G is our #a2zdementia letter in readiness for #diversealz 8pmGMT/3pmET. What G words can you think of in relation to dementia and why? Suddenly it’s Grandma/grandmother/grandpa/grandad. Thinking intergenerational.
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE
RT @DiverseAlz: G is for giving. It’s #diversealz at 8pmGMT/3pmET when we talk Goals and goal setting. We start with our icebreaker - words beginning with letter G that can be associated with dementia (part of our #a2zdementia) We’re working thru alphabet. Join us!

Make mom happy and comfortable were my biggest goals as well as maintaining or if possible improving her health and quality of life. #diversealz https://t.co/9g4ffnkZ7X

Earlier @bradboyqld had a g word relating to giving the best care possible. Perhaps giving was the word #diversealz

Hello everyone on #diversealz @nursesKidONE @mumbythesea @helenfindlay @mathews_orla
Chuck @OrangeChuck
@DiverseAlz @journeyofcareM I would not be caring for mom if I did not think I was the best person to handle her care & I like to believe the biggest reason I am the best choice is because I want her to be as happy as possible in life. #diversealz

Tweet via @OrangeChuck apt for our chat on goals as he explains he believes best placed and best person to provide mum’s care as her happiness at heart. See @mumbythesea @helenfindlay 2. Got a but to this as well but later. #diversealz clue: care homes

When dad passed, I spoke with my family & everyone believed I was the best option. I was living with them already after my divorce & knew her & her needs the best. So I quit my job I loved because mom needed me & I felt I could handle it. #diversealz https://t.co/vnZYdwnrj0

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Question 2: how could one respond to someone who believes having/setting goals around dementia care is nonsense, that goals are for “more purposeful things”? #diversealz
Chuck @OrangeChuck
Yes! Not all goals are long term. Sometimes it's good to set a goal especially if you want to accomplish something. "I will get this done so we can be out the door by 4!" or "If the weather is nice this week, I will take her for ice cream." #diversealz https://t.co/JSGo4218pL

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Generous and guilt two mega words from @TommyTommytee18 for people with dementia and supporters/caregivers alike? #diversealz
Chuck @OrangeChuck
@Shedfieldlodge @DiverseAlz @journeyofcareM I admit that my sister in law is a nurse and initially I thought maybe her and my brother may be better for that purpose alone but they also are not around her on a daily basis & while nurses can help, sometimes there is more to care than just knowing medicine. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Question 2 refers to comment made in a discussion and could be shown to highlight ignorance. Yes. Why not set goals? Is about planning, progression, even stages of life #diversealz

Question 3 might be strange putting this under goals but what would the position be if a loved one/ friend needed to go into a care home? #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
RT @helenfindlay:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
RT @Shedfieldlodge:
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE
My goal was to support Mom remaining active in her life as much as possible. It also meant looking for new activities/programs in which we could participate when "friends" & neighbors excluded her from activities. Arts programs at museums was one of those activities. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
A goal could also be non pharmalogical interventions. #diversealz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Guardianship is the G word from @nursesKidONE which deserves question on its own not just because is a g word but because should be a goal along with power of attorney, planning ahead #diversealz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
With goal setting we aren’t talking about anything new and yet it seems to take on another dimension when we add dementia #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Earlier @Shedfieldlodge mentioned they had some ideas about goal setting. Care to share? Also @willow_lodge any views given we have asked about goals re care homes? #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
One simple goal has to be to try and be happy/cultivate happiness. So question 4 coming up and by you can guess it #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE
Mom was a retired school nurse, so a goal I had was to find intergenerational program. Unfortunately, there seemed to be none in her immediate area. I also had to learn difference between social model & medical model for adult day care; social model rare at the time. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Question 4 somebody asks you what a goal can be whe. It comes to dementia. What would you suggest? #diversealz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
RT @nchadborn:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
@nchadborn Agree, which is why thought it would make an interesting chat. Like @TommyTommytee18 goals (not Everton) and settings more common than we think so why not in dementia. Just don’t think about it #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz

RT @helenfindlay: @DiverseAlz Q3:
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE
Correct. I find that professionals may think in terms of goals that are reimbursable by health or long term care insurance coverage in the US. Care partners must begin to think outside the box & push the envelope on these limits, using the appeals process, if needed. #diversealz https://t.co/lREc0M8Obk

Mom doesn't walk so well these days so that may limit us a bit but when weather is nice, we can go for car rides, hair appointments, or as I teased @TommyTommytee18 about even just grab some ice cream together. Mom loves it. #diversealz https://t.co/Kbi5FaRfGD

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Question 5 can you give any examples of unreasonable goals? #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
RT @helenfindlay:
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE
Exactly. I was told what to expect, but my goal was to figure out what was really going on with my mom. None of the expectations set by the APS caseworker and the doctors, including a geriatrician, seemed to fit. #diversealz https://t.co/JLgVJohUv6
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Question 5 is dependent on circumstances and conditions so look forward to answers #diversealz

There is a goal I set and regret it. "I will be able to handle this myself if nobody will volunteer to help! I'll show dad that I am capable of doing it and honor his memory." I lasted over 2 years & when things started failing, my anxiety became an issue. #diversealz https://t.co/hU11zWsGaT

I also tell people that they have to monitor care provided by others in a residential home or in a private home & that they can expect it to be almost as time consuming as being the care partner, unless they are lucky to find the right place/people. #nevereasy #diversealz https://t.co/49N6BWcni2
