Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz #diversealz Thurs: Dementia and food as healing, a source of emotion(s) and biography (life stories). 8pmGMT/3pmET Now!
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Good day wherever you are and welcome to #diversealz to chat about dementia and food
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz We are here to #diversealz about dementia and food in three areas: as healing; spiking the emotions; and biography. Yes...we have life stories through food!
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Who’s going to chew on words tonight and contribute to our, hopefully, delectable chat- food and dementia #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Here’s a poem (part of) from @journeyofcareM who is out tonight (enjoy JM), who writes re: mum: I hear the clink again of jar and spoon and another sound that must only come from the delight of jam upon her tongue. #diversealz Hope to return to this in our 3rd section.
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Dementia and food: our chat is in 3 parts. Food as healing. Any thoughts on this especially in a dementia context. Let’s set to a question #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 1: How can one address the days when a person with dementia has little or no appetite? #Diversealz
ApexCare @ApexCareCA RT @DiverseAlz: Dementia and food: Dementia and food: our chat is in 3 parts. Food as healing. Any thoughts on this especially in a dementia context. Let’s set to a question #diversealz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz A #diversealz welcome to @ApexCareCA Hope you enjoy the conversation.

nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE RT @DiverseAlz: Question 1: Question 1: How can one address the days when a person with dementia has little or no appetite? #Diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE RT @helenfindlay: @DiverseAlz Q1:
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE RT @DeeDavies12:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Yes. When all said and done, hydration is so so important and something easily missed even unknown as in importance. Perhaps @learnhospice has a piece she can tweet to us. Also Acknowledging @DeeDavies12 on chat #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Also point from @LynnGamble20 about how one’s tastes and preferences change though notice LG husband still likes treats (sweets) and @helenfindlay mentions hydration and putting out calls for help including twitter #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz We welcome @ApexCareCA mentioning diet and lifestyle. This a subject that could go on and on as “prevention” comes in here. More like ways to stagger inevitable if marked for dementia? Another story though for now. Perhaps. Valid too #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 2 coming up and this is where our healing process comes in or some would say goodness in food - think chicken soup. Here we go #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 2 Food as healing...what do you think seeing those words? Any thoughts on nutritious food - remember, dementia is at the back of our minds #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Back to question 1 to get to question 2...if need to try and ensure person with dementia is getting nutrients or food to aid weight gain, this is where our concept of food as healing comes in. Thinking but butters (allergy aware) that can be consumed in many ways #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz @wordbursts Thank you for this. Stay with us if possible. This is our discussion. In 2nd and certainly 3rd parts of the conversation where we hope it will really come alive! Will be there soon! #diversealz. Just putting twist on convo we have often
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @helenfindlay:
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE A.1. Had used a liquid protein-based supplement, Orgain, when I needed to keep my weight up due to temporary metabolic (hyperthyroid) condition. So I gave Orgain to Mom to supplement what she was willing to eat. There probably are other similar products available now.#Diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz @wordbursts It’s entirely relevant. We aim to discuss all of this very soon. Thanks for contributing. #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE RT @DiverseAlz: Also point from @LynnGamble20 about how one’s tastes and preferences change though notice LG husband still likes treats (sweets) and @helenfindlay mentions hydration and putting out calls for help including twitter #diversealz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Liquid protein supplements are useful. See @nursesKidONE who mentions this. #diversealz. Learning, in UK at least, homes are not permitted to use this (correct @Shedfieldlodge), heard hospitals too? Will present some challenges. Homes expected to provide nutrients #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE RT @helenfindlay:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz @DeeDavies12 @nursesKidONE Have you tried liquid proteins and drinks like Ensure. #diversealz. We had convo on this. Will try and find
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz We are going to do a special chat on hydration so watch space cc @learnhospice #diversealz. Is needed especially with dementia in mind
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Yes @wordbursts mentioning smoothies. Well, banana and (pea)nut butter. That should be a must if one can tolerate nuts #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Look
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @LynnGamble20:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Also reminder via @LynnGamble20 that eating conditions can matter. Her 96 year old mother likes seating at table as did @helenfindlay’s #Diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Must say that lack of appetite can be real cause of concern. We park this part of the conversation (another special chat calls) to move on to part 2 of conversation...in nutshell emotions/feelings #Diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 3: ever thought how the emotions come into eating? Thoughts? We can include time, place, look and feel here...the senses #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz We eat with our eyes, we are enticed by smells (often) food, we are mindful of presentation. Question 3 we have linked to emotions. It is also about the senses. #Diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @helenfindlay:
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE @DiverseAlz @DeeDavies12 I used Orgain bec of its ingredients, instead of the liquid supps usually used in hospitals & nursing homes. Mom liked one flavor better, so that is what I got her. Fortunate to find on sale. A quick search online: is limitation on use in UK due to cost to NHS? #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Slop as in puréed food presented badly via @helenfindlay. Funny this being mentioned. Agreed. Yet, Foods like oatmeal, cornmeal, ground rice can become essential where there is lack of appetite. Thinking gruel! That said now taking of foods that can be slop. #Diversealz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @helenfindlay:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @LynnGamble20:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz @LynnGamble20 @nursesKidONE @Shedfieldlodge Yes. Heard that too. Guess for those who want to buy, they get it approved by GP and then fork out for it. Cut backs. #Diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Cutlery and ability to use has appeared on timeline and it is a major factor #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE And I found an avocado to be a good substitute for a banana in a smoothie, if trying to limit sugar. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Going to tweet question 4 as it is related to question 3 and already getting tweets. We can then continue to build on our conversation. #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE RT @DiverseAlz: Also reminder via @LynnGamble20 that eating conditions can matter. Her 96 year old mother likes seating at table as did @helenfindlay’s #Diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 4: we all have personal food histories or remember those of others. With dementia in background...as always..can we share? Can also be based on observations. #Diversealz Remebering @helenfindlay mum’s love of sherry
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz @nursesKidONE @DeeDavies12 Cutbacks in UK around these drinks if expecting them free on National Health Service. Hearing. However don’t know why families should be penalised if want to buy own. Guess get a GPS approval. After all, can use in own home #diversealz @helenfindlay @learnhospice
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Yes @wordbursts points out that some foods can trigger negative memories. #Diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @helenfindlay:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz And @helenfindlay has just trigged good memories. Her mum’s crumble and how she thinks of her when she makes it. #diversealz. Will add rock cakes then. Wonder if they could make a come back? #Diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @LynnGamble20:
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE @DiverseAlz @LynnGamble20 @helenfindlay My mom preferred to eat out in restaurants, probably to get out more often & to have more people around. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz And there is food that becomes routine. Once interviewed one of Nelson Mandela’s daighter’s who mentioned how he would always eat porridge. Guess you can figure why. #Diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE RT @helenfindlay:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @nursesKidONE: @DiverseAlz @LynnGamble20 @helenfindlay My mom preferred to eat out in restaurants, probably to get out more often & to have more people around. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz There’s a thought based on tweet via @nursesKidONE whose mum liked to eat out in restaurants. #Diversealz This could be a potential answer for where some people with dementia have lack of appetite. Change of scenery or look into past...#diversealz #aboutcoaxing #Diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Sounds obvious but clearly food history/preference has to be a top priority #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @nursesKidONE: And I found an avocado to be a good substitute for a banana in a smoothie, if trying to limit sugar. #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE And to this I would add, no vision impairments, including, e.g., proper eyeglasses & no cataracts. The latter was something I think I missed. I attributed her stopping reading menus & choosing at food bars to progression of dementia. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Avocados mentioned by @nursesKidONE as part of a diet/nutrition. Sound #Diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE RT @helenfindlay:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz We have mentioned fruit on timeline. Can always give people their share in smoothies and can use veggies too #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE RT @DiverseAlz: @nursesKidONE @DeeDavies12 Cutbacks in UK around these drinks if expecting them free on National Health Service. Hearing. However don’t know why families should be penalised if want to buy own. Guess get a GPS approval. After all, can use in own home #diversealz @helenfindlay @learnhospice
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @helenfindlay:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Let’s also remember that there may come a time with a person with dementia will not recognise (some) food #diversealz This is where one needs solutions. A #diversealz special on food and drink is coming
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 5 on seeing phrase comfort eating and bearing in mind our first question on lack of appetite...does it then matter what a person with dementia eats as long as they eat? #Diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE @DiverseAlz @LynnGamble20 @Shedfieldlodge I’d be curious to see how much is charged to patients in US hospitals & nursing homes for these types of nutritional supplements. My observation is that food companies seem to supply US hospitals w/ low quality foods for patients. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 6 back to food as healing...what have you got?Hint...most societies have dishes that fit the bill and particular spices/herbs (guess one has to know how to cook?!). #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @nursesKidONE: @DiverseAlz @LynnGamble20 @Shedfieldlodge I’d be curious to see how much is charged to patients in US hospitals & nursing homes for these types of nutritional supplements. My observation is that food companies seem to supply US hospitals w/ low quality foods for patients. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz @nursesKidONE @LynnGamble20 @Shedfieldlodge But it appears, in some instances, people can be penalised when they want to supplement that. Excuse pun #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @helenfindlay:
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE @DiverseAlz Again, I think I attributed mishandling of cutlery to progression of dementia when it could have been due to vision impairment due to cataracts. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Food...it can be like sods law and balancing. Don’t want tk encourage person to put in too much weight or be underweight. @helenfindlay mentions bloating and trial and error on this. Who doesn’t know that story...#diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE RT @helenfindlay:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @nursesKidONE: @DiverseAlz Again, I think I attributed mishandling of cutlery to progression of dementia when it could have been due to vision impairment due to cataracts. #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE RT @DiverseAlz: Yes @wordbursts points out that some foods can trigger negative memories. #Diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE RT @LynnGamble20:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz With @nursesKidONE mentioning eye sight, we have to be mindful that there aren’t other underlying issues stopping a person with dementia from eating such as dental problems, vision (NKO), ability to grasp things, even balance #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE RT @DiverseAlz: There’s a thought based on tweet via @nursesKidONE whose mum liked to eat out in restaurants. #Diversealz This could be a potential answer for where some people with dementia have lack of appetite.
