Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Good day wherever you are. It’s #diversealz Thurs and time to discuss dementia and getting the best help from healthcare professionals.
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Good day to all on #diversealz. Our icebreaker and strange one perhaps but as we move to end of year, what one word sums up dementia for you and why?
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz @alzbarbie Welcome to #diversealz and significant word.

Barbara Ivey @alzbarbie #diverseAlz when my Mom w/adv Alz was in the ER Dad & I saw healthcare workers ask her questions. We knew Mom's ability to answer accurately had gone years before. When we tried to share this, we were ignored. What would have been a better approach?
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Fighting tweets @helenfindlay who commissioned the play Fightjng for Life highlighting parent health issues and experiences within care sector so look forward to her thoughts #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz #diversealz going for missing. Think big word in dementia for several reasons and perhaps key to this discussion
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Let’s start the chat but keep icebreaker question at the back of our minds #diversealz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 1: how can one communicate effectively with health care professionals? Often hear they are not listening. Remember our focus is dementia #diversealz

Caroline @journeyofcareM @DiverseAlz Q.1 Approach too is key. Some professionals feel threatened if you challenge them, so one could always preface it with using another authority say, like The Alzheimer's Society. #DiverseAlz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 2: why is time and issue and how to address? #diversealz
Chuck @OrangeChuck I think it depends on the health care professional and our approach. Yes some can be difficult but many are very understanding & I've had many positives experiences with mom & minimal negative. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz When it comes to appointments, have always suggested writing questions or concerns down so don’t forget important things #diversealz

Erin Partridge @2littlewings @helenfindlay @DiverseAlz Agreed--and the communication needs to prioritize & center all forms of communication from the person with dementia. Folks far too often talk over, about, and around instead of WITH. #DiverseAlz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE RT @helenfindlay:
Caroline @journeyofcareM @DiverseAlz Q.2 When making an appointment ask for a longer time. I've found that when I make a doctor's appt. the receptionist ask why I need one and if I rattle off a lot of ails then they book us in longer. #DiverseAlz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz @Shedfieldlodge Can back track...how does hone interact with healthcare professionals and with appointments, is there a time limit. If so, how do you address this? #diversealz
Caroline @journeyofcareM @DiverseAlz @Shedfieldlodge A lot don't manage because they do not hire enough caregivers. And it's always down to money, and ppl do suffer. #DiverseAlz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 3 is based on a tweet that is so relevant. Coming up #diversealz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 3 scenario: person withbdenebtia cannot communicate or in a way healthcare professionals do not understand. However, disregard PWDs carer or supporter. Solutions? #diversealz. Based on tweet in timeline but very real.
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz @mumbythesea @helenfindlay @alzbarbie There was a time this was routine. People forgetting this can be done or should we say world changing? #diversealz. Please see question 3
Caroline @journeyofcareM @alzbarbie @DiverseAlz I imagine all caregivers have this happen & it is very annoying. I have asked that this information be on her chart at her eye doctors but they still persist with asking her when her birthday is . She does sometimes tell them her memory is bad & spares me, but argh, #DiverseAlz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE @DiverseAlz A1. It helps to be prepared w/ info. However, difficult for a sole/primary care partner to gather info abt dementia(s) in limited time. For "& other dementias" especially, probably helps to read research, even to identify appropriate specialists.#diversealz
Chuck @OrangeChuck @mumbythesea @DiverseAlz @helenfindlay @alzbarbie Or find new ones who may be more willing to listen if possible. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 3 so relevant on many levels and sure something many have experienced #diversealz lz. Thought also goes to situations where English is second language or a language is second language

Erasing Boundaries @ErasingWalls @DiverseAlz Q2: In the US the healthcare system is antithetical to an experience of dementia. Healthcare wants cures, doses (even w quality of life interventions!). Dementia wants patience, flexibility & understanding. On a large scale - we need to educate clinicians differently #diverseAlz

Chuck @OrangeChuck @DiverseAlz I once had a doctor's office tell me they only did new patients in the morning. I told them mornings are not good for mom. I found a different doctor who was more open to mom's schedule. I dont compromise mom's care even for doctors. #diversealz

Chuck @OrangeChuck @DiverseAlz I've had some tell me that I should do things a certain way because its beneficial to their care. If you've never spent more than 2 minutes with mom but I'm with her 24/7, how can you tell me what's good for her care without being open to my reasons? #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Via @BubblyNas an introduction to her family and needs in a nutshell. More later. #diversealz

Chuck @OrangeChuck @nchadborn @DiverseAlz I've had some who would go that extra step for mom & I've had some who it seems like are just trying to get to the next patient. It's not a profession thing...it's an individual thing. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Listening and effective listening appearing on timeline. It is so important but who is listening #diversealz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz While reading timeline, wondering if this engagement is about pot luck but within that pot luck knowledge or ability to find out or support #diversealz
Caroline @journeyofcareM @DiverseAlz @nchadborn Most professional have to make notes, so ask them for them. In Canada we have full access to our medical documentation. #DiverseAlz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz One way is to stand ground if can support points #diversealz. can be misinterpreted as aggression. But @OrangeChuck comment springs to mind when he spoke of knowing mother. As carer, who could know her better? Also @BubblyNas who lets healthcare professional know she’s aware

nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE @helenfindlay @mumbythesea @DiverseAlz I do think trust has to be earned by the professional, even when a patient or family member is difficult. #diversealz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Trust becomes important but want to know healthcare professional has the knowledge in dementia or can signpost to right/useful places #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE @DiverseAlz @nchadborn I think there needs to be an alternative that has doctors spend more time communicating w/ patient & less time entering info into computers. #diversealz |
