We’re here to talk about dementia and research. #diversealz.
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Welcome @TommyTommytee18 @nursesKidONE please have your question ready #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE
RT @DiverseAlz: Quite a few discussions going on in #diversealz timeline from Christmas presents (should they be different for PWD to how far would one travel to a care home and self care when that rest/relaxation can be elusive.
Alzheimer Society TO @AlzToronto
@DiverseAlz Hello! We are finally free at this time after a few weeks of missing out! #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
There’s much to cover tonight . So let’s crack on. Would also like you to flood timeline with questions later. #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE
RT @DiverseAlz: #diversealz dementia & research 8pmGMT/3pmET today. Lots of attention drawn to this recently esp with Bill Gates donation for Alzheimer’s cure... but how much do we know about who and what’s out there?
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE
RT @DiverseAlz: We’re here to talk about dementia and research. #diversealz.
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Question 1 Have you ever considered participating in dementia research or encouraging people to do so, and, if so, why? #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
The chat is a result of the attention that is being drawn to research through donations (think Bill Gates) advertising and fundraising via big organisations. There is, however, research and research #diversealz.
Alzheimer Society TO @AlzToronto
We host AST Speaker Series events 8-10 times a year and host various researchers and doctors (sometimes authors & others, too) to expose our clients to what's actually going on from the research perspective. It's well-received! https://t.co/QScMy2O2Ob

We like connecting with researchers doing work here in #Toronto so clients can participate or find out more if they choose to do so. Everything is realistic, based on real & current trials and within reach. We leave the option open for interested clients. #diversealz https://t.co/QScMy2O2Ob

Question 2 Much emphasis on research appears to be in cure for Alzheimer’s . What would you look for in a research project on dementia? #Diversealz #publicity #promotions

As @beatdementia mentioned by @nchadborn interesting via website how promotes itself. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
So @beatdementia encourages people to sign up for research projects and says is rather like a ”matchmaking service”. Folk informed when research is appropriate. Dementia not a requisite. #Diversealz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
There is lots of research going on out there though argue don’t seem to hear that much about it. So would be good to know how researchers recruit. #diversealz
Alzheimer Society TO @AlzToronto
We appreciate studies searching for a cure for #Alzheimers, of course, but we need other studies as well: to understand the brain, protein build-up, symptoms, medication to manage symptoms, prevent onset... all kinds of research is still needed. *lp #diversealz https://t.co/2G02z2dJki
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Research is paramount if we are to beat dementia from @derekfisher2907 #Diversealz

We promote local research studies on our social media and blog. We also work together with @Toronto_Memory to recruit. They do all sorts of clinical trials for new medications, as well as memory testing related to genetic #dementia. #diversealz https://t.co/k6EaRcfkJf

I read a proposal which appeared to suggest the need for new clinical trials to test the failed drugs at higher doses and that existing safety & performance standards in clinical trials should be "relaxed" in order to do so. #diversealz https://t.co/8im9cHcuPy

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
@nchadborn @catherine_max Thanks. Wanted to ask about research on stigma across board. We have the @AlzDisInt report from a few years back. Need more! #diversealz

What about research that may benefit people with some dementias other than Alzheimer's? I read of a small study published earlier this year regarding an intervention for people with Primary Progressive Aphasia. #notjustdrugs #diversealz https://t.co/ZGuKnrnbrr

@DiverseAlz Yep, this research is also important! We need to let our governments know that caregivers need more support and our healthcare systems need to be ready for an influx of people living with #dementia. #diversealz *lp

There should be research 1)to reassess the role in diagnosis & 2)to improve knowledge of the PLWD & the skill sets of paid nursing aides & unpaid family members who provide the direct support & care for most PLWDs. Instead of trying to create cheaper labor pool. #diversealz

Please keep the conversation going! #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE
I think that number should be challenged. The brain is so complex & knowledge of dementias among primary care & other doctors is limited. Care for the elderly is often not pursued as diligently as it is with younger patients for many different reasons. #diversealz https://t.co/JaJsUeNE4E

Very true. RT @helenfindlay: Better care and support and change in attitudes generally also needed. Society can disable people rather than the other way round #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE
@nchadborn Hypertension is epidemic among African Americans, we are told. So perhaps this & other factors would create a different profile of dementias among African Americans. And then there are issues related to accurate diagnosis, including validation of screening tests. #diversealz
