Hello #HITsm friends! I feel like I haven't joined one of these chats in forever, it's so nice to be able to connect with you all today. I'm Ashley from Rhode Island, and I wear a lot of marketing hats @Carium. Excited about today's topic!

Chuck's my name! Workflow's my game! (1) Also 3D printing (2) & VR (3). Plus, increasingly interested in sustainability, especially in context of (1), (2) & (3)! By some definitions (diner/movie discounts) I am a senior. Thus, I have a personal interest in today's #HITsm topic!
John Lynn @techguy
@amariedauwer @CariUM Glad you could join Ashley! What are your holiday plans? Anything fun on the agenda? #HITsm

@wareFLO Glad you could join Chuck. Can't wait to hear your "senior" perspective. #HITsm
John Lynn @techguy
@RosenfeldSamara @MDMagazine Who are you picking for tonight's game? #HITsm
Jeremy Coleman @jeremycoleman
T1: Training or education is hard to find for new tech. Seniors need to know just hot to accomplish a task and not watch a 15 min video on the foundation of certain tools. #hitsm
Janet Kennedy @GetSocialHealth
Hi! Janet Kennedy with the @GetSocialHealth podcast and @SpencerHealth. Accoring to the @AARP I've been a #senior since I was 40. What really counts? The @IHOP discount menu! #HITsm
Chuck Webster MD, MS AI, MS Systems Engineering @wareFLO
Biggest hurdles for seniors re tech? Frankly, money. Yes, usability, attitudes, access are all important. But, simply put, some of the most usabilty & accessible tech is too expensive both for folks on limited retirement incomes & the healthcare systems serving them. T1 #HITsm
John Lynn @techguy
@mshlcurrie @HealthcareScene @naviHealthPAC Better use voice recognition ;-) I hate when I spill on the keyboard. It's impossible to clean and the keyboards you can clean aren't very good. #HITsm

John Lynn @techguy
Wow! So, you're espousing workflow specific training for seniors too? #HITsm https://t.co/9XotSIaYGj
Boston Software Systems @Bossoft
T1: Great question. Some of the hurdles include real-time messaging and coordination of care from inpatient to outpatient facilities. This includes meaningful information and follow-up that's actionable for patients and caregivers. #HITsm
Samara Rosenfeld @RosenfeldSamara
T1: Seniors are not aware of all the #HealthTech options available to them and it can be difficult to teach them how to use the technology properly. #HITsm
naviHealth @naviHealthPAC
T1: My great aunt loves to use her FitBit to track her steps - in fact, she uses it daily. It's helped with her physical and mental health. Even though it was challenging for her to get started, she absolutely loved it once she understood the technology. #HITsm

Janet Kennedy @GetSocialHealth
I think there are levels of adoption ease. Were seniors using technology in their jobs or life? Early Adopter outlook? I also think there's a point where #seniors think - I'm done learning and am happy with what I have now. #HITsm https://t.co/PdCfKIfWRR
John Lynn @techguy
First, I think it's unfair to just say "seniors" as a category. There are very technical seniors (see: @wareflo) and there are those that aren't (see: my mom). So, the first step is to not assume that seniors won't adopt technology. #HITsm
Erin Kelly @Thinking4Health

Kevin Kunzmann @NotADoctorKevin
It'd have to be the rate by which we're advancing tech, right? Seniors are far slower than the mean to buy into new tech, and even slower to adopt to its unique usability. #HITsm
Ashley Dauwer @amariedauwer
@RosenfeldSamara @MDMagazine Hey Samara! So nice to connect with you today! #HITsm
naviHealth @naviHealthPAC
@Bossoft It's a challenge to connect to providers in a meaningful and actionable way. What could we do to allow for more engagement from the provider community? #HITsm
Jeremy Coleman @jeremycoleman
@techguy We have to remember many seniors were in college when computers still used punchcards. They have lived through a much higher rate of tech evolution so their onramp to smartphone apps could be on an unpredictable stop on the information superhighway. #hitsm
John Lynn @techguy
@amariedauwer @CariUM My son was so into the Christmas tree, he convinced my wife to buy a 2nd tree. So, we have 2 trees. One that looks like it could be in Nordstrom and another we call the Charlie Brown tree. We're mostly just staying home for the holiday, but heading to Utah after Christmas #HITsm
Jeremy Coleman @jeremycoleman
@techguy @wareFLO Much better way of making the point I just made. #hitsm
Boston Software Systems @Bossoft
T1. There are many varieties of "seniors". They all need relevant information. There's the ones who know and love technology and those who just need help and healthcare, and could care less about how it works. Align to the needs of each to create value. #hitsm
Samara Rosenfeld @RosenfeldSamara
RT @NotADoctorKevin: It'd have to be the rate by which we're advancing tech, right? Seniors are far slower than the mean to buy into new tech, and even slower to adopt to its unique usability. #HITsm
John Lynn @techguy
@RosenfeldSamara @MDMagazine I was thinking football (Utah vs Oregon). I thought we didn't watch basketball until Christmas. #HITsm
Spencer Health Solutions @spencerhealth
We have found that #seniors vary in their acceptance of new technology. That's why our goal is to design the most intuitive, user friendly #UX as possible. Make someone's tech savvy level irrelevant. #HITsm
naviHealth @naviHealthPAC
@RosenfeldSamara Agreed, it's a challenge because it takes more patience and time to get them comfortable with the technology. #HITsm
Bob Brown @ReasObBob
@HealthcareScene @naviHealthPAC As an official "senior," by just about anybody's standard, I think small keyboards on phones are a problem because of the eyesight/dexterity issue some seniors face. Technology? Don't have a problem with that. #hitsm
Boston Software Systems @Bossoft
@naviHealthPAC Create usable systems that limit silos and connectivity issues and provide meaningful information. #HITsm
Patrick Campbell @RealPatCampbell
Don't think this only applies to seniors—but it seems to be the ease of application combined with effectiveness. I'm unlikely to change what I've done for decades unless it is both more efficient and effective than what I'm already doing. #hitSM @naviHealthPAC
John Lynn @techguy
This is a great point. And even awareness of cheaper alternatives that are designed for seniors. #HITsm https://t.co/kgWs2hI5QM
Samara Rosenfeld @RosenfeldSamara
@naviHealthPAC And that population might prefer more traditional means of care. #HITsm
John Lynn @techguy
How did it help with mental health? Was it the value of physical movement for her mental health? Or something else? #HITsm https://t.co/ngzTryJ3dc
Ashley Dauwer @amariedauwer
@techguy @CariUM That's awesome! I want to get another small tree too, but one we can plant outside after Christmas🌲 It's pretty amazing enjoying the holidays with little ones and seeing how excited they get. #HITsm
Healthcare Scene @HealthcareScene
T2: How can today’s tech better serve the senior population in keeping them healthy and/or better equipped to manage their chronic conditions? Are there non-clinical solutions to address SDOH such as transportation needs, housing, meals, etc? @naviHealthPAC #HITsm https://t.co/bIik4pbPjz
Ashley Dauwer @amariedauwer

John Lynn @techguy
I've seen this first hand. It's not that they can't learn, but they're just kind of tired of learning. They're satisfied with what they know. I know learning takes more work the older I get too. #HITsm https://t.co/65JFXOvPsV
Boston Software Systems @Bossoft
@RosenfeldSamara @naviHealthPAC I think that depends on the level of illness, dont you? When we're sick, we just want to be well. When we're well, we are more eager to try new things, or use technology enabled solutions, wearables, etc. #HITsm

Matt DiVenere @Matt_DiV
@GetSocialHealth I run into this with my grandmother a lot. How can family caregivers break through that barrier with #seniors if there is a specific tech that would help them? Or, even better, should we try to keep educating them despite pushback? #HITsm

Jeremy Coleman @jeremycoleman
T2: Tech can make a senior's day easier through simpler reminders or auto-reordering. Vid communication instead of purely over the telephone plus the ability to share health info means not requiring a family member/caregiver to attend appointments for people living alone. #hitsm
HealthTech Magazine @HealthTechMag
T1: One of the main hurdles for seniors when it comes to new technology is its ease of use. #HITsm #seniorcare
Samara Rosenfeld @RosenfeldSamara
T2: Seniors want to stay at home. Using #HealthTech and remote patient monitoring, they can have more freedom while staying on top of conditions like #hypertension and #diabetes. Plus, services like @Uber can be used to help transport seniors to their appointments. #HITsm
Jeremy Coleman @jeremycoleman
@techguy I would push back slightly. I think the curve of value/effort just gets steeper. If you can show them value and decrease complexity, then you can still get buy in. All about #adoptability. #hitsm
Ashley Dauwer @amariedauwer
@jeremycoleman @techguy @wareFLO I totally agree with this. There's a pretty big difference when you're talking about a 55 year old versus a 75 year old. Although, even my 78 year old grandmother takes her BP every day at home, has an iPhone and uses Facebook! #HITsm
Kevin Kunzmann @NotADoctorKevin
They need to meet at the practices already adopted by the senior population: telemedicine visits, interactive scheduling and tailored reminders. #HITsm
Boston Software Systems @Bossoft
T2: Absolutely. In some cities they have taxi services, for the elderly, volunteers who take seniors to healthcare appts.Housing and access to healthy foods are a national healthcare crisis. And we should provide all seniors with wearables whenever possible. #hitsm

John Lynn @techguy
@jeremycoleman This goes back to not grouping them all into the "senior" category. I was suggesting I've seen some people like it. Many don't have this issue. Although, to your point, it really just means the value/effort equation just changes for these 2 groups of seniors. #HITsm

John Lynn @techguy
Reminds me of a study that gave cells to the patient to track their diabetes after discharge. They'd call them each day to get the info they needed. It saw amazing results. Just not sure if it was the call itself or the data that caused the result. #HITsm https://t.co/AXLNE0Yi5Q
Jeremy Coleman @jeremycoleman
T3: Communication of condition in a private and respectful way would be huge. What if a wearable could flash an alert to people around about increased likelihood of falling? Or if blood sugar was too high/too low? Alert it someone was outside a geographical zone? #HITsm
Bob Brown @ReasObBob
@HealthcareScene @naviHealthPAC T3 And, it's not just wearables. There is serious progress being made in the use of various kinds of sensors in the home that are non wearable. Must look at monitoring as a holistic thing, not just something attached to a person. #HITsm

IMO voice is going to be a really helpful component of successful solutions #HITsm
Ashley Dauwer @amariedauwer
@NotADoctorKevin That's a great thought. I think it depends on what the reminders are. Medication reminders directly to seniors may be useful, and appointment reminders may be better suited for a caregiver. Everyone's needs will be different so I think personalization is key here. #HITsm
