Jennifer Caputo-Seidler, MD @jennifermcaputo
Our group had no policy for maternity leave. When women became pregnant it was a scramble to get one in place. Ultimately got 14 paid shifts (we use 7 on/7 off sched). Anything else is either unpaid or you have to pick up extra shifts before taking leave to break even #JHMChat
Jennifer Caputo-Seidler, MD @jennifermcaputo
The lack of paid leave is a major issue. “Rarely was a formal parental leave policy in place. Once a parental leave plan was established, several women reported the financial burden associated with a leave that was partially, or fully, unpaid.” #JHMChat

@jennifermcaputo The Riano et al article clearly shows that #parentalleave policies at “top” academic centers on average fall far short of that recommended by AAP! #JHMChat

@JHospMedicine A2: For the residents it seems pretty good, eg they try to schedule lighter rotations even coming back after leave. Of the recent new parents in my division, the one male attending took a couple weeks off; the women 2-3 months but unsure how much paid leave vs vacation #JHMchat
Jen Readlynn, MD, FHM (she/her) @jenreadlynn
@ArielaLMarshall Yes! Still kills me. And the financial burden of this does not even take into account the lost productivity bonus that other co-workers are able to get. Much bigger loss of wages than just the time away. #JHMChat
Rebecca Jaffe, MD @RJmdphilly
@aoglasser Yes we make sure that our clinical time and non clinical time are reduced proportionately during leave. No 12 months in 9 months. Sometimes we still need to trade because of wacky schedules but I think in emerald works out #jhmchat

@princessbeth634 @STangGirdwood @JHospMedicine realize this is off topic but this study was eye opening for me to read. https://t.co/bqVvDLjtZi nearly half of residents (OB/GYN!) overestimated the age at which female fertility markedly declines #jhmchat

A4 - better understanding of medical process even after a normal healthy pregnancy and delivery. Better understanding of the sacrifices we ask others to make for health. A little more meta cognitive process in dealing with difficult patients (#toddlers) #JHMChat

A4 #JHMChat becoming a mother has taught me a new level of patience, unconditional love, and the importance of every minute of the day. No time for wasted time at work - even pumping is an opportunity for productivity!

@sostfeldjohns @JHospMedicine Agreed, but hopefully the residency program is supportive eg putting harder rotations earlier in the pregnancy when it's not so hard to simply breathe or move around (from my observations of others) #JHMChat

Sobering end of #Jhmchat thought (10 min after) - we’ve really only discussed a) the months before u become a mom, b) the months after u become a mom & c) the 1st few wks of trying to be Mom MD. This is so much ⬆️ complicated tho’ than taking time off & coming back again.
