Let's get started! We'll use a Q1, Q2… format for questions. Please use the A1, A2… format for answers. Here's the first question… #LDchat
Understood @UnderstoodOrg
Q1. What is #AssistiveTech and how can it help students with #LD and #ADHD? #LDchat https://t.co/tEH9f163h0

@NEATwithJamie Hello from a few miles down I-91! Connecticut’s State Education Resource Center joining in. #LDchat

#AssistiveTech is any device, software or equipment that can help kids with #LD and #ADHD work around their challenges. Learn more: https://t.co/X5igrUFnVu #LDchat
Mike Marotta @mmatp
A1: AT is ANY device (whether low or high tech) that improves the functional capabilities of a student. As simple as a post it note>>> or as high tech as an organization app on a smartphone #LDchat

Mike Marotta @mmatp
@NEATwithJamie the best kind ... none! #LDchat
Edie Brown @edielovesmath
@UnderstoodOrg Assistive technology (AT) is designed to level the playing field by working around challenges. My older ADHD kids benefit by addressing reading, writing, organization, behavior, and learning strategies. It's similar for my adults on the Autistic Spectrum. #LDchat
Understood @UnderstoodOrg
The second question is coming up… #LDchat
CT SERC @ctserc
A1) AT is anything that helps a child perform a skill or participate in an activity. Under IDEA, it is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of students with disabilities, including LDs and ADHD. #LDchat
Mike Marotta @mmatp
@NEATwithJamie We need to continue to erase this myth. AT is not cheating-just like having my phone remind me about #LDchat wasn't cheating!

A2: Great question! We focus on their needs to make sure we find what is RIGHT for them. The right tool will be different for everyone. We need to work together w/ Ss and ed support teams to understand S abilities, environments and tasks first. Then tools #LDchat
Jamie Martin @NEATwithJamie
A2. Matching #AssistiveTech tools to student needs is important, especially since there are so many options available. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from an AT specialist. A consultation or evaluation can pinpoint what tools are most appropriate for individual students. #LDchat

@UnderstoodOrg A2. Older students and adults with #ADHD and on the Autistic Spectrum should focus on their strengths first. Then, what are their likes and dislikes (i.e. smartphones, tablets, computers)? Only then, consider weaknesses. Find tools, teach how to use them. #LDchat
