Rachel Payne @RachieRuu
Super excited for this weeks #otalk I've been doing a lot of long days on my placement, so not been at home in time, but tonight I'm here, very tired, but I'm here and cant wait to get talking!
@mrsmcinburtott
[REDACTED USER] I’d say learning,learing,learning (of any kind) #OTalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
RT @mrsmcinburtott: [REDACTED USER] I’d say learning,learing,learning (of any kind) #OTalk
Esther Brimacombe @escb75
[REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ Seeing progression with skills and growing confidence #OTalk
Orla @orlatheot
[REDACTED USER] Seeing the OT process carried out in that setting and then collaborating with your educator to start leading sections of it. #OTalk
@mrsmcinburtott
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Feeling supported in your learning is key #OTalk
Rachel Payne @RachieRuu
[REDACTED USER] One where I'm supported to put theory into practice, developing and demonstrating skills at my own pace, and being able to develop the confidence to work as an OT. Oh, and good marks are always helpful! #OTalk
@mrsmcinburtott
[REDACTED USER] Supervision in all guises is really important #OTalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Lots of people tonight making the important point that learning is a two-way street on placement - educators can learn from students just as much as vice-versa! #OTalk https://t.co/yNWLnxPGFs
@mrsmcinburtott
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Support seems to be mentioned in a lot of comments - where would we all be without it :) #OTalk
Rachel Payne @RachieRuu
[REDACTED USER] Yes! I feel that being supported to work at my own pace, and do things when I feel comfortable makes me feel more confident, and less rushed, which can lead to them being more successful! #Otalk
@mrsmcinburtott
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Students often find questioning knowledge tricky but it’s really important isn’t it? #OTalk
Esther Brimacombe @escb75
[REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ [REDACTED USER] Sorry #OTalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Interprofessional learning is definitely very important! #OTalk https://t.co/NiuHOD5efp

RT @mrsmcinburtott: [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Students often find questioning knowledge tricky but it’s really important isn’t it? #OTalk
@mrsmcinburtott
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] IPL is a challenge on campus - it’s really consolidated when you are on placement I think #OTalk
Kwaku Agyemang @KwakuOT
I Think A Student Has To Go Into It Willing And Motivated To Learning & For The Educators To Provide The Opportunities To Meet This Motivation. #OTalk https://t.co/ag4Bd9IFMg
@mrsmcinburtott
@EllenChisman I guess that’s the time to ask for support from your university tutors #OTalk
@mrsmcinburtott
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ We encourage it from our students but they don’t always find it easy to question their educators #OTalk
Orla @orlatheot
[REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ Supervision sessions should be planned and treated as important opportunities to reflect and set clear goals for each week. Also, the atmosphere should be no question is too complex or too stupid. #OTalk
Rachel Payne @RachieRuu
I also think to be successful it's important to not compare placements? I initially thought I wasn't doing so well on my current placement, based on my thoughts from my first, when in reality the two are totally different, and so can't be compared #otalk

Esther Brimacombe @escb75
@mrsmcinburtott @OTalk_ [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Are you questioning their knowledge or getting them to challenge the evidence? Either way it is tricky, as they can feel under the spotlight or feel pressured to give the right answer -sometimes there is no right answer. #OTalk
@mrsmcinburtott
[REDACTED USER] As a university tutor I like that :) I love it when students feel so much part of the setting #OTalk
Ben Kirkwood 🏳️‍🌈 @OT_BenK
#OTalk [REDACTED USER] I believe weekly supervision is vital and if you get stuck ask for help regardless of the question they are there to help you succeed!
Kwaku Agyemang @KwakuOT
I Think Students Have To Identity Their Own Learning Objectives (Taking Into Account The Overall Skills Needed For Occupational Therapy) Before Getting To Placement & The Educator Can Then Find Setting Specific Experiences To Meet These. #OTalk https://t.co/WRYvknatPu
@mrsmcinburtott
[REDACTED USER] I’d really agree Amy - focus on all the oppprtunities and embrace them and the outcome will be positive #OTalk
@mrsmcinburtott
@orlatheot [REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ There is a place for informal supervision but I’d agree protected time is essential and for us very much part of our required processes #OTalk
Orla @orlatheot
[REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ [REDACTED USER] Good point. I had a community placement and car journey were spent brief and debrief about home visits. #otalk
@mrsmcinburtott
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] I agree :) it shouldn’t be threatening to be questioned by a learner #OTalk
Rachel Payne @RachieRuu
[REDACTED USER] Glad it's not just me! I think it's natural to compare against what we have previously achieved, but being aware of the differences is important in order to maintain our self confidence, and ensure we aren't too hard on our selves #OTalk

@mrsmcinburtott
[REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ That’s a really good point - newly qualified staff has so much to give in terms of supporting a student through an assessed placement #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
Sorry for being late- have to get a walk in appointment to fix my phone. #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
@carspring27 [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] On my placement my educator recommended the Honey and Mumford Learning Styles Questionnaire to identify my learning style, I found it very helpful! - Carolina #OTalk
Esther Brimacombe @escb75
[REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ Be clear on expectations of the placement from student perspective and from supervisor. Sometimes students can be hard on themselves and set unrealistic goals. Communication is key. #OTalk
@mrsmcinburtott
@escb75 [REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ I think this is true. Students often forget how much experience an educator has and they can’t expect to replicate that on a placement #OTalk
Orla @orlatheot

#OTalk @OTalk_
It looks like nearly everyone's identifying communication, honesty and openness as vital factors in a good placement - is it maybe difficult to be as honest/open as possible as a student when you're worried about doing well? #OTalk https://t.co/pC3QV0qLO2
@mrsmcinburtott
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ Good supervision is definitely a two way thing and relies on honest communication from both sides #OTalk
Steven Harvey @stevenh_OT
[REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ I think being open with each other and making sure there is formal opportunity for sharing and reflecting to continue development #OTalk
@mrsmcinburtott
@EllenChisman Do you feel educators expect a student to have all the knowledge to hand on a final placement? Sometimes I feel they expect students to know too much in a new area even on a final placement #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] I gave my student a comprehensive picture of what my work setting is like. #otalk
Orla @orlatheot
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ I am the queen of silly questions so believe me you can still pass your placement after asking them 😂 #OTalk
@mrsmcinburtott
@OTalk_ Students will tell us it is tricky. The power balance is not equal. Important to build trust so communication can be reliable #OTalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Interested to see what my fellow students will say for Q3... #OTalk https://t.co/Z1yk1i4vtL
Orla @orlatheot
[REDACTED USER] Students bring updated knowledge on OT models and frame of references. There is also the fresh perspective we bring to a service, we might notice things and question them more than an employee that has been there for 5 years. #OTalk
Esther Brimacombe @escb75
@OTalk_ Honesty is important not only with your supervisor but also with yourself. If you're struggling or worried about something, #OTalk you can work with your supervisor to focus on improving / problem solve.
@mrsmcinburtott
[REDACTED USER] I like this question - I think educators underestimate the skills students can bring - literature searching/evidence base/presentations/producing information posters etc #OTalk
Kwaku Agyemang @KwakuOT
[REDACTED USER] @otalk I Think If You Look At The Overall Skills Needed To Qualify As An Occupational Therapist, The Opportunities For These Can Be Found In All Settings I Believe And That’s When The Educator Comes In To Identity Those Opportunities As It May Not Be Clear To You. #OTalk

[REDACTED USER] Masters students can bring skills and experiences from their undergrad degree like many in my year. I studied music so I loved using that occupation in practice when it was appropriate #OTalk

[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] That’s great - so many educators feel they don’t know how to use online learning as CPD resources. Good for your student :) #OTalk
Rachel Payne @RachieRuu
[REDACTED USER] A fresh prespective on how theory may be used in the area, and new knowledge when finding evidence to support practice. For example, I've been doing some research on creative writing for my placement, which has been great in helping me feel that I'm bringing something! #Otalk
@mrsmcinburtott

[REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ A successful placement is one where good objectives are achieved. In 25 yrs I have never felt comfortable or confident in my skills, and I have never stopped learning. I expect my students to be keen also. And both my students got A s. #OTalk

[REDACTED USER] @otalk I think knowing each other’s learning styles from week one saves time and potential conflict straight away. I like being given the opportunity ‘learn on my feet’ whereas, others would not be comfortable with that. #OTalk
@mrsmcinburtott
Being involved in student education is the best way to learn new things - it keeps your interest & knowledge fresh #OTalk https://t.co/QkGDoODCyA

Rachel Payne @RachieRuu
My current placement is in low secure forensics, and so my educator being aware of the setting, and supporting my safety has been so essential in my learning! It's made me feel safe, and looked after in a setting where there is a lot of risk. #otalk
Steven Harvey @stevenh_OT
[REDACTED USER] @otalk I valued having a prep talk before completing sessions and a level of independence to enable development #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@orlatheot [REDACTED USER] for my observational one, I gave a treatment to my student during her 4th day of 5. I let her pick so that she can build her confidence. My goal was for her to do that treatment with minimal assist from me. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] That's why I tried to structure a time where the student can reflect upon what she learned to me in my experience. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@beckycooper___ [REDACTED USER] and in my setting, I wanted my student to learn the interplay between OT and other disciplines... not only in treatments, but also related to plan of care overall. #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Tonight's #OTalk is nearly over! It's been a fantastic discussion tonight - great to see the exchange of information between students and educators!
@mrsmcinburtott
[REDACTED USER] @beckycooper___ [REDACTED USER] @otalk Good question - I think it is being honest about what you know and to what level. Not over or underestimating your knowledge & skills #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@EmmaOT2B [REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ Yes- I think I was very proactive in contacting my student- 3 weeks before she started her experience. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] That is why I know from POV of a clinical instructor, I will give the academic placement/fieldwork coordinator a preview of some of the sites that might take students (as I work in a good bit of nursing homes around LA). #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] When I was clinical instructor, I would fill in whatever knowledge gap that the student has to learn in my setting (especially since that placement was observational for the most part). #otalk
@mrsmcinburtott
Interesting chat tonight incorporating all aspects of placement. Good luck to all the students & educators - you’ve got this!! Thanks for hosting #OTalk

[REDACTED USER] Good question. I should make some resources to share with other students #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] that student was intimidated by my professional title at first. She told me what she thought, "Crap! My clinical instructor has an OTD. Then, this guy is also my RA rep in AOTA." But then I assured her, "If you do your job, I will grade you fairly." #otalk

[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ If I ever had a hands on student (like a 8 weeker for OTA or 12 weeker for OTR), that would have been me. However, my workplace makes it hard to do so because of internal workplace dynamic plus the fact that the nursing home is small. #otalk

Really enjoyed #otalk tonight! Well done [REDACTED USER]! Now to go wind down before bed!
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ Yes... that placement experience was a learning experience for me. For me, I got a bonus in terms of getting some feedback from my student's academic placement coordinator. That academic placement coordinator told me that I aced her expectations! #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@beckycooper___ @mrsmcinburtott [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] on the flip side, I quizzed my student of her clinical skills she should have learned in school (MMT, ROM testing, transfers, etc.) #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] In the US, I think it will be a lot easier as a 8 or 12 weeker than a 1 weeker or once a week for 6-8 weeks. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @RachieRuu [REDACTED USER] What my student's school offered was nice- they sent me a brief profile (like a dating profile) of the student. I used that to help me plan her experience. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@beckycooper___ very good! It is important for clinical instructors to quiz their students of the skills they should know. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
