Hello! Welcome to this week's #OTalk discussing the value of volunteering. Please introduce yourself and answer Q.1: Have you ever volunteered, or do you currently volunteer with an organisation? Tell us about it. Or tell us what barriers stop you from volunteering? https://t.co/M4PD1SiRMW
#hellomynameis Mark Whiteman @markstudentOT
#OTalk hi Orla, I'm Mark, a student at Oxford Brookes. I volunteered from time to time for a variety of organisations, such as Lindengate.

deb_OT @dmay_ot
#otalk I'd love to do more and after seeing the results from Compassionate Communities I almost volunteered but I also have 2 small kids and a dad with dementia so really I ought to start with them!

@orlatheot Hello Kellie here, OT student. I volunteer with the University's volunteer hub on an ad hoc basis. Time can be a barrier, so it's helpful that the hub offers various opportunities, for different purposes and varying commitment levels #OTalk

@orlatheot Hey Orla, I’m a MSc student at Brunel and love volunteering. Have volunteered both home in Ireland (through church, school and a kids literacy club with you!), in UK (kids wheelchair basketball club) and abroad (in china with disabled orphans) I don’t let much stop me #OTalk

Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
Hello peeps! #otalk
Stephanie Wetherbee @smw1009
I volunteered at New England @NEDisabledSport. I was a snowboard instructor for people with a variety of different disabilities. I was able to learn about monoskis, biskis, and tethering. Volunteering here was so valuable because I brought my passion into others' lives. #OTalk
Orla @orlatheot
@megrfowler Welcome to #otalk!
Francesca S @OT_Francesca
@orlatheot Great topic @orlatheot I've volunteered abroad in mental health & LD services 🇱🇰 I've also volunteered in Scotland with dementia & children's groups and recently done some volunteering at local children's hospital. Also uni volunteering The biggest barrier is time!⌚ #Otalk
Dianne @OTStudentDianne
Hello! I volunteered for around 2 years with a Scottish charity for children with additonal support needs and I've now worked there for about 1.5 years. Also volunteering this summer with an organisation that runs activity holidays for adults with disabilities 😄 #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@orlatheot I think I should consider my TEDx project as a community volunteer project. #otalk
Ciara Molloy @OT_Ciara
@orlatheot A few mins late but excited to take part in my first #OTalk - Volunteering is what got me interested in OT. I volunteered with special needs orphans in China every summer during my undergrad and from this I knew I wanted to work to improve the lives of kids with disabilities!

Kellie Tedjo @k_tedjo
@orlatheot It's helped me relate to some of my placement settings. Volunteering has also enabled me to contribute and understand some of the issues faced in our local community #OTalk

#OTalk Q2 I’ve been volunteering for 7 years & it has changed my life. I’ve had the most amazing experiences & best of all, met some wonderful people. It has been stressful at times, but worth it. https://t.co/GN0dGSO1Ii
deb_OT @dmay_ot
#otalk I really enjoy all the volunteering I've done (and over the years I've done loads). I like getting to spend time with people, making them laugh, engaging with them, and introducing them to new things - morris dancing, needle felting, kayaking, computers...)
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@orlatheot And of course- I do serve in a couple roles in AOTA. A big barrier for me as a clinician is that I don’t have freedom to visit clinics. I need to use my PTO to do conferences and school visits. #otalk
