Hello! Welcome to this week's #OTalk discussing the value of volunteering. Please introduce yourself and answer Q.1: Have you ever volunteered, or do you currently volunteer with an organisation? Tell us about it. Or tell us what barriers stop you from volunteering? https://t.co/M4PD1SiRMW

Q2. Thanks to everyone joining the discussion tonight! What do you enjoy about volunteering? Does it benefit you? #OTalk https://t.co/DoGVBOBdky
Orla @orlatheot
@markstudentOT Sounds very interesting #otalk looking forward to hearing more as the discussion continues
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
Hello peeps! #otalk
Stephanie Wetherbee @smw1009
I volunteered at New England @NEDisabledSport. I was a snowboard instructor for people with a variety of different disabilities. I was able to learn about monoskis, biskis, and tethering. Volunteering here was so valuable because I brought my passion into others' lives. #OTalk
Orla @orlatheot
[REDACTED USER] Welcome to #otalk!
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@orlatheot I think I should consider my TEDx project as a community volunteer project. #otalk
Orla @orlatheot
[REDACTED USER] Wow, you've done so much #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@orlatheot And for me as a curator of that TEDx event- I have to put in a good bit of time and effort to it because I know putting together an event is not easy. #otalk
Orla @orlatheot
[REDACTED USER] Amazing, honoured to be your first #OTalk Ciara :)
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@orlatheot And of course- I do serve in a couple roles in AOTA. A big barrier for me as a clinician is that I don’t have freedom to visit clinics. I need to use my PTO to do conferences and school visits. #otalk
Orla @orlatheot
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Love it, arts in health is a big passion of mine too #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@orlatheot For the OT one, I feel it is great opportunity to understand how AOTA works. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@orlatheot For my TEDx one, I really want to give our community a consistent platform to share our voice. #otalk
Orla @orlatheot
So true, the people you meet volunteering are the best #otalk https://t.co/9fGXZQJQpN
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
RT @orlatheot: [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Love it, arts in health is a big passion of mine too #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Time has come up in several of the responses to Q1 as a significant barrier to volunteering (esp. for students) - having the option of more short-term commitments is one good way to address it #OTalk https://t.co/yImYLcEpYd
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] @orlatheot Speaking of which, China is a recent @thewfot member! #otalk

Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@orlatheot If it is AOTA, I think it will just be teamwork and leadership skills. I enjoy collaborating with fellow leaders. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@orlatheot If it’s TEDx, essentially it feels like I am doing my clinical doctorate project again. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @orlatheot @thewfot I heard it from Dr. Adlen Chan, who plays a major part in @USCChanOSOT China initiative last week at #aota18 #otalk
Orla @orlatheot
[REDACTED USER] The use of silence, very interesting. what's that? #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] I agree. The experience that is concurrent with my role in the Representative Assembly in AOTA was key to give me the courage to try. #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
[REDACTED USER] Good point! From my own experience I think we have a lot of free time as students but often less predictable schedules than someone working full-time (and it's harder to commit to anything long-term if you're going to be moving somewhere else for a placement!) #OTalk
Orla @orlatheot
Q4. Time for a controversial question I think. Do you think it is useful to volunteer abroad or is it better to volunteer locally where you are ‘culturally relevant’? #OTalk https://t.co/hU8WOzKS7G
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@orlatheot I facilitated for a week on @IamAnOT17. I consider that as an abroad project. #otalk

Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@OTStudentDianne [REDACTED USER] @orlatheot And sometimes new one emerge too! To run about 75-80% of the whole TEDx event is a challenge! #otalk
Orla @orlatheot
@MillennialOT [REDACTED USER] That's what people need in some cases #otalk someone to sit with them and be there
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@markstudentOT And sometimes is also motivation too. I know a good bit of LA based OT practitioners would volunteer to serve as clinical instructors at the Ghana externship @USCChanOSOT organizes every year. #otalk
Orla @orlatheot
You're a natural OT so ;) #otalk https://t.co/OPvGJkdDJc
Orla @orlatheot

Yeah, both have their strengths #otalk https://t.co/ngFviIavxh
Orla @orlatheot
[REDACTED USER] What skills have you seen recently? #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] And if I volunteer abroad, I think the OT world will think I disappear... lol! #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
RT @orlatheot: Yeah, both have their strengths #otalk https://t.co/ngFviIavxh
Orla @orlatheot
[REDACTED USER] Yes, it's essential to ask questions of the project you are going to and getting an idea that they benefit the community and don't do more harm than good #Otalk
Orla @orlatheot
Q5. Do you record your volunteer experience as CPD evidence? If so, how? #OTalk https://t.co/9flsCFKciA
Orla @orlatheot
Yes, and then in turn, inspires us to keep studying and working hard #otalk https://t.co/xN5Y0QMVEb
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] I actually do... especially I recently reviewed abstracts for #caot2018. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @orlatheot @thewfot @USCChanOSOT He knows more than I do. So ask him. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@orlatheot I put it on my CV. #otalk
Orla @orlatheot
When I am volunteering for a short period, I look to support the long-term staff rather than start a new project only I could sustain. That way the staff are left encouraged #OTalk https://t.co/7Q63hkBpx3
#OTalk @OTalk_

@MillennialOT @orlatheot I think as long as when volunteering abroad, we should be culturally sensitive to the available resources of that region/country. Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@AlondraLaOT @MillennialOT @orlatheot Made me think about my upcoming keynote address in India. Some of what I will share may not be applicable to that country. #otalk

SWOT analysis is a great shout #otalk https://t.co/scTqzAE28v
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] @orlatheot And SWOT is a great tool when we consider volunteer opportunities within OT. #otalk
Orla @orlatheot
[REDACTED USER] Is the SWOT about your personal development or your volunteer role or something else? #otalk
Abi Edwards 💙 @AbiEdwards7
@orlatheot @OTalk_ #otalk. I volunteer regularly at parkrun, it is not really an employment role, but in terms of health promotion, social prescribing, achievable goals, human interaction it is all good....incredibly diverse, volunteer enabled
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@Jacqusie @orlatheot Similar to those within OT too. We must wisely choose the opportunities we want to pursue. #otalk
