![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Good evening #OTalk [REDACTED USER] on the account this evening. Do say hi even if you plan on lurking. If you have any questions about joining in just let me know. https://t.co/DBb9Ef1mFX |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Its 8pm here in the UK so that means time for #OTalk, hosted by Margaret Spencer [REDACTED USER] who will be asking: Supervision - what's the point? https://t.co/U8iGGh48uD Don't forget the house rules, but most of all enjoy the chat! https://t.co/PyFS8om3mH |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Welcome [REDACTED USER] and thank you for volunteering to host this evening. #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ #OTalk Question 1..... |
![]() | Teresa Buchan @teresa_buchan [REDACTED USER] Professional supervision is often built into clinical and managerial supervision. Our trust policy is every 6 weeks minimum and they can last from 1-1.5 hours #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ #OTalk Question 2..... |
![]() | Teresa Buchan @teresa_buchan [REDACTED USER] Those staff in non traditional OT roles, professional supervision is essential to remain connected and help support professional development, but this isn't always prioritised. We are working to build this into practice to ensure it is a professional responsibility. #OTalk |
![]() | Lauren Osborne (@laurenosborneot.bsky.social) @LaurenOsborneOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Have you considered getting a #Mentor instead? [REDACTED USER] have some resources that are worth looking at. Maybe you could get more focussed #OT related support that way? #OTalk |
![]() | Teresa Buchan @teresa_buchan [REDACTED USER] Professional supervision to me is about being challenged to develop and ensure that my practice is current and supports my practice. Linking to my personal and professional development and that I am self checking my practice against professional and regulatory standards #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ #OTalk.... |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ #Otalk Question 3 |
![]() | Teresa Buchan @teresa_buchan [REDACTED USER] Supervision can be task orientated at times, whilst supportive is focused, whereas mentoring is long term view of individual progression. There is a close simile, but a mentoring/coaching approach can be used within supervision to effect change and growth #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT Joining late to the party. #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] With my professional teaching job, I taught along side the program director. So that is direct supervision. Now we are going with a check in model as I just mention what the class needs. #otalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ #OTalk Question 4..... |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] As for my regular job, it was very off and on when I started. I had to initiate questions whenever I am not sure of something. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] For my teaching job, making sure I am on track and make the right decisions based on university rules. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] Mentoring is definitely different from supervision in my opinion. I think mentoring is needed when I identify areas that need in depth discussion, debrief, review, etc. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] In terms of supervision, I use close by supervision when I have placement students... but that’s because they are not ready for extended time yet. #otalk |
![]() | Teresa Buchan @teresa_buchan [REDACTED USER] I don't use any particular model for supervision. Our policy has guidance for structure but this is flexible to allow for individuals to explore. Supervision is a conversation to allow for reflection, learning and growth and this cannot be forced in any framework. #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Or in case of academia, making sure I am confident in teaching on my own or any other aspects that I need to be independent quickly. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT RT @teresa_buchan: [REDACTED USER] Supervision can be task orientated at times, whilst supportive is focused, whereas mentoring is long term… |
![]() | Teresa Buchan @teresa_buchan [REDACTED USER] Individuals have to use whatever reflective model that works for them in supervision. It is about agreeing that process before and sometimes choosing the right person to be your supervisor to facilitate that learning and growth #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ #OTalk Question 5.... |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] For me in terms of professional development specifically, I think it is important to share what other possibilities to build on what you are already doing. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Yes- that is specifically my design. Of course... students have to adjust to me quickly in a span of 1 week (or less) in these situations. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] And 1:1 in academia from what I see- feedback on what I did well and needed improvement on after the end of class. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Yes- and the mentee should be proactive when needing mentorship, not when there is little time to turn bad situations around. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] As I have seen in academia with me, seeing me establishing a presence in the classroom is the important aspect for me! #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] Or in academia- on track in being a high quality academic. #otalk |
![]() | Teresa Buchan @teresa_buchan [REDACTED USER] Professional supervision ensures you are critically developing and ensuring the you are the best you can be in your practice. Personal resilience, professional development, critical challenge and feedback, If you don't do this regularly then you have no reference point #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] In case of academia will be- making sure student needs are met and what you are doing are meeting university standards. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT RT @teresa_buchan: [REDACTED USER] Professional supervision ensures you are critically developing and ensuring the you are the best you can… |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ #OTalk Question 6 |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] This is a good question. In the states, our level 1 placements are not necessarily supervised by an OT practitioner. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] In terms of placements, I think it really depends on the type of student. I think some students can benefit from developing fundamentals in a setting first from an OT practitioner before progressing to not necessarily getting supervised by one. #otalk |
![]() | OTMargaret @margaret_ot @OTalk_ #OTalk I think mentoring is an optional choice to go more deeply into a subject with someone who can help develop and encourage. Supervision is a mandatory part of working life, and ensures professional growth, competency and safe working practices. |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] And I think it is also a good idea to expand on this question- in some skilled nursing facilities in the USA, qualified occupational therapy assistants CAN BE directors of rehab. So they can play supervisory role in a sense to therapists. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] One of the reasons is- there is a supply/demand issues with placement sites. #otalk |
![]() | Teresa Buchan @teresa_buchan [REDACTED USER] Professional supervision should ideally be from someone of the same profession. Practice should be reflected against professional standards and professional skills which others cannot do effectively, they can however open other thought processes and approaches to learn #OTalk |
![]() | OTMargaret @margaret_ot @OTalk_ #OTalk I have had many different models over the years. Peer group supervision with just OTs, mixed peer supervision & individual sessions. All had a format to work from but flexible and opportunity to raise questions / concerns / celebrate success! 😊 |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT RT @margaret_ot: @OTalk_ #OTalk I have had many different models over the years. Peer group supervision with just OTs, mixed peer supervisi… |
![]() | OTMargaret @margaret_ot @OTalk_ #OTalk It encourages, corrects, informs and teaches/ develops if done well! |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] I think running a TEDx event really was an eye opener for me. To rely on support from non-OT’s in terms of how to run one of these events was a great learning experience. Now, I hope to pass on what I learned to interested OT’s... as noted in my OTPractice Article. #otalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ #OTalk Question 7... |
![]() | Teresa Buchan @teresa_buchan [REDACTED USER] I've been managed by a nurse and not given separate professional supervision and the challenge is to fight for your professional identify and responsibility to professional standards. #OTalk |
![]() | OTMargaret @margaret_ot @OTalk_ #OTalk monthly individual x1 hour and 3or 4 times in a group, for approx 3 hours. |
![]() | OTMargaret @margaret_ot @OTalk_ #OTalk It does, broadens practise / experience, but good to have OT only supervision too. |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ #OTalk |
![]() | Teresa Buchan @teresa_buchan [REDACTED USER] Is your template for professional supervision or clinical as these can be separate but also combined. We have formatted templates but it still a conversation that you guide for your development #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ 5 Minute warning to the end of the official #OTalk hour... What are you take away thoughts? CPD action plans? https://t.co/b9aWvGWnie |
![]() | OTMargaret @margaret_ot @OTalk_ #OTalk our meetings are typed up confidentially and we can use these to refer to in every day work, and also evidence for HCPC. Some areas can be linked up to "pillars" of Professional practice. |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @OTalk_ I think developing myself as an academic is my goal in the near future. I know I am getting better from when I started. I still got a ways to go. #otalk |
![]() | Teresa Buchan @teresa_buchan [REDACTED USER] Supervision records are held personally and I would use them to reference to for HCPC. They may be the evidence of reflection that may need further documenting but I use my supervision to refer back to to inform my CPD. #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ A massive thank you to [REDACTED USER] for hosting this evenings #OTalk an excellent topic and some really helpful comments... much to reflect on. |
