Question 1 #OTalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
@natasharoach242 Yes! Exciting times! #OTalk
Sherlyn 🤔⭐️(she/her) @sherlynmelody
@kerri_schOT #OTalk That was my thought once I left uni, I had completed 4 placements 2 in a day centre, 1 hospital & @ a charity #kidscompany role emerging. So my experience of OT was limited, so I thought hospital. I ended up working in social services. The hardest learning curve ever!
Sherlyn 🤔⭐️(she/her) @sherlynmelody
@kerri_schOT #otalk ......but the variety is immense. It’s like a rotational post but you rotate with each service user.
Minh Tran @otramblings
@kerri_schOT My first role was an OT for a private company in Australia. Luckily for me, it provided a service to a private hospital. Instead of covering specific wards, I covered referrals which was anything and everything from range of clinical specialties to community rehab visits #otalk
deb_OT @dmay_ot
I 'm looking to build a wide range of core skills; I've had fab placements but in specialisms so I want DGH core experience. A rotation I hope will deliver that. #otalk
Sherlyn 🤔⭐️(she/her) @sherlynmelody
@dmay_ot #otalk DGH?? What’s that?
Amie Jayne💚(she/her)🏳️‍🌈 @Amie_OT
@kerri_schOT I've taken on a static role in the dementia service, it's where i had my last placement, I'm like a bad smell... had to return #OTalk
Sherlyn 🤔⭐️(she/her) @sherlynmelody
@kerri_schOT Yes it’s nothing I ever imagined #otalk
Zoë @ot_zoe
Hi #otalk, I am about a year and a half into my rotational OT job which was my first job after qualifying. I am interested in hearing how any of you feel when it is time to change service.

@OTalk_ #OTalk Just starting to look at jobs now. I am geographically fixed, so it is about the jobs that are in the local area - probably rotational
Amie Jayne💚(she/her)🏳️‍🌈 @Amie_OT

Question 2 #OTalk
Minh Tran @otramblings
@nhumilton @kerri_schOT Hi :), I was trained in Australia #otalk
Sherlyn 🤔⭐️(she/her) @sherlynmelody
@kerri_schOT #otalk I like you, thought staying in one place for a period of time would enable the development of skills needed in that area/condition etc. Perfect way to develop skills and once you have them it’s time to move on 👍🏾
Debra Hughes @Debraj_OT
@kerri_schOT Not due to qualify till May ish. However I have just applied for rotational position. Super excited, feel i would be better suited at rotational and give me a good base for learning differnet areas #OTalk
Amie Jayne💚(she/her)🏳️‍🌈 @Amie_OT
@natasharoach242 @OTalk_ I love it and even though it's not a rotational post I run groups, specialise in doing sessions teaching iPad and alexa technology to support independence at home and do home assessments and do a good mix of some generic work too. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@kerri_schOT I never did it... but I know some people bounce around different settings. The collection of experiences is great if you are still looking for a permanent setting to call home. A side benefit is that you can be quite versatile in academia if you choose to teach. #otalk
Amie Jayne💚(she/her)🏳️‍🌈 @Amie_OT
@kerri_schOT From what I've heard a rotation can be really helpful in cementing the core OT skills and knowledge #otalk

Rotational posts are great because it’s like those taster plate of beers. You get to sample different clinical areas. But also, if you get bored easily like me, it’s nice to move around #OTalk
Angela Yeomans @AngelaYeOT
I'm nearly 4 months into a rotational post, my first qualified OT post. I'm working in a health care for the older person team. I really love it. It is really challenging and very busy and I'm learning a lot #otalk
Amie Jayne💚(she/her)🏳️‍🌈 @Amie_OT

@dmay_ot @sherlynmelody @emmaspellmanOT Hmm I’ve worked as rotational in acute and also had my time in community. Personally, I think it would be easier coming from acute setting into community. You really develop a strong clinical foundation in acute because you work with MDT everyday #otalk

@dmay_ot @emmaspellmanOT #otalk I think it would be easier to go from social service to B5 or higher, because of the varied experience. I do adaptations, care packages, a lot of social work. Going to hospital would mean a deeper focus on OT specific skills (I think)
Amie Jayne💚(she/her)🏳️‍🌈 @Amie_OT

#OTalk @OTalk_
Question 3 #OTalk
Amie Jayne💚(she/her)🏳️‍🌈 @Amie_OT
@kerri_schOT For me, I chose not to do a rotational post as I felt like 6 months would give me time to settle in and then it would all change again. I also felt that certain areas were not quite for me... I was a placement fainter in the hospital! #otalk
deb_OT @dmay_ot
@sherlynmelody @emmaspellmanOT Hee hee! The opposite of @otramblings . Love the diversity of responses you get! #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
@mgood1984 @ot_zoe Just one T in #OTalk Michelle. :)
Minh Tran @otramblings
I find it frustrating when it comes to service development. I’ve finally got a project going or made an improvement but then I have to rotate. #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@kerri_schOT Reason why I still keep my static full time job as opposed to going all the way with teaching- seniority can be important in the US. So I want to explore teaching first before I fully move on board. #otalk
Sherlyn 🤔⭐️(she/her) @sherlynmelody
@otramblings @dmay_ot @emmaspellmanOT #otalk that is true also, but social services is all I know ☺️ But I think the social work and care management makes the transition harder. You’re picking up stuff that the hospital social worker would do. It’s doable but takes away from OT a bit.

Angela Yeomans @AngelaYeOT
@Amie_OT @kerri_schOT @natasharoach242 I found it less enjoyable on my community placements than my hospital based placement. There was less structure and guidance I felt. That is why I opted to try to get an hospital based rotation. #otalk Time is still an issue but at least you are near to colleagues
Amie Jayne💚(she/her)🏳️‍🌈 @Amie_OT
@OTontheTracks @kerri_schOT This was the main reason why I opted out of a rotation, I wanted to be able to get stuck in without worrying about where I would go next #otalk
Sherlyn 🤔⭐️(she/her) @sherlynmelody
@OTalk_ #otalk the biggest drawback 4 me would have been rotating into an area that i may not want 2 be in, but there is no choice. However I think as a newly qualified OT & actually as an experienced OT it’s good 2 face a challenge/be out of ur comfort zone, it’s good for development.
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@margaretOT360 Me would be a combination of 1/4 teaching, 1/2 clinical, and 1/4 globe trotting to present at OT conferences. #otalk
Amie Jayne💚(she/her)🏳️‍🌈 @Amie_OT
@AngelaYeOT @kerri_schOT @natasharoach242 I'm the opposite, I really enjoy not having a structure and having to the variety that I come across, it was the structure of a hospital rotation that I wasn't keen on after hospital placements #otalk

@kerri_schOT #otalk I wonder if the static posts are well loved & so never vacant 😂 When I speak to others, there does seem to be an expectation to gain experience first through rotations, if not already gained prior to study perhaps?
Abi Edwards 💙 @AbiEdwards7
@kerri_schOT #otalk Is it a belief that being qualified ensures ‘enough’ skill to be able to practice safely, but acknowledges that in a band 5 position there is still a vast amount of learning going on, and doing this in different environments makes rounded OTs?

Minh Tran @otramblings
@Amie_OT @ot_zoe *so good (autocorrect!!) #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@embracingOT @kerri_schOT I would actually dare some OT students will actually get into the nitty gritty of organizing a TEDx event. 😈 it might not be clinical at all... but the community element can be pretty apparent. #otalk
Amie Jayne💚(she/her)🏳️‍🌈 @Amie_OT
@LindsayOTPICU @kerri_schOT Sounds like an effective way to do an informal rotation! #otalk
Amie Jayne💚(she/her)🏳️‍🌈 @Amie_OT
@otramblings @ot_zoe True, it could go either way I imagine. #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Question 5 #OTalk
Zoë @ot_zoe
@LindsayOTPICU @kerri_schOT How different were the roles? Did you find that your skills transferred easily between settings when you had the interviews? #OTalk
Amie Jayne💚(she/her)🏳️‍🌈 @Amie_OT
@_rachelOT @kerri_schOT That sounds like a really great opportunity! #otalk
Sherlyn 🤔⭐️(she/her) @sherlynmelody
@SophieHeywood29 @kerri_schOT #otalk I think you should go for it. You will only grow.....nothing to lose 🙌🏾
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@SophieHeywood29 @sherlynmelody @kerri_schOT Not all OT’s feel confident that they want to enter one setting after they qualify. I never thought I would end up in rehab... as I did the worst in school. But I worked hard to be competent therapist. #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
@dmay_ot @kerri_schOT @Amie_OT remember the hashtag in all the tweets #OTalk
Amie Jayne💚(she/her)🏳️‍🌈 @Amie_OT
@AideenKa @Louisepenny87 @kerri_schOT My advice would be to go for what you feel suits you rather than what you feel you 'have to' do. If you know a rotation is not for you, don't worry! #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@otramblings @embracingOT @kerri_schOT I actually find out how fun that is. I think the dynamic shifted for me a bit when I realized I also have to pay the event’s bills. #otalk
Minh Tran @otramblings
Q5: I would really advise to come talk to us already working in the field :). We don’t bite! Or get in contact with RCOT and come along to one of the regional meetings closest to you. Usually a good mixture of diverse OT brains you could pick #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@otramblings @embracingOT @kerri_schOT TED actually went through a big overhaul of rule changes a few days ago. So it should be a little more fun again to organize these. #otalk
Amie Jayne💚(she/her)🏳️‍🌈 @Amie_OT
@OTalk_ Again, I would say go for what you feel suits you rather than what you feel you 'have to' do. If you know a rotation is not for you, don't worry! #otalk

@kerri_schOT #otalk after my 1st yr of feelin like a failure. I would recommend a rotational post 2 enable the dvpmnt of skills, knowledge&understanding the #otprocess surrounded by OT’s for prof dvpmnt , peer support, sound clinical reasoning. But if u knw wot u want2 go for it.

@emmaspellmanOT @OTalk_ I think a panel or debate will be a great idea. #otalk

Some great discussions happening in #OTalk this morning. #loveOT #OTsunite #OTandproudofit #occupationaltherapy

Question 6 #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@kerri_schOT If you fail in your first job, treat it as a learning opportunity. I know I failed miserably with my first job performance wise. But in looking back, I actually would have gotten ripped off pay wise had I stayed. #otalk
Minh Tran @otramblings
@kerri_schOT I’m still rotational hehe #otalk
Amie Jayne💚(she/her)🏳️‍🌈 @Amie_OT
@kerri_schOT Great advice for a static post too, ALWAYS ask questions, I don't think there is a day that I don't ask something but I've learnt so much in 6 months! #otalk

it’s the last 5 mins of tonight’s #OTalk. Any take home thoughts? or final questions.
Amie Jayne💚(she/her)🏳️‍🌈 @Amie_OT
@BethjmOT Thanks =] it was the advice I used when I looked for a clinical role #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@Amie_OT @kerri_schOT Yes- like with my new teaching job yesterday... I probably asked the most interesting questions at the on site orientation. I want to show that I am willing to learn the craft. #otalk
Sherlyn 🤔⭐️(she/her) @sherlynmelody
@kerri_schOT #otalk yeah it has flown I’ve been standing up in the kitchen eating my dinner the whole time 🤦🏾‍♀️😂🤣
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@Amie_OT @kerri_schOT I know with me with teaching... always know what are the policies ahead of time is better than thinking about what to do at the moment. #otalk
Angela Yeomans @AngelaYeOT
@emmaspellmanOT @OTalk_ #otalk we had that @DerbyUni @DerbyOT mixture of recent graduates and senior OTs talking about their areas and experiences. Really wide range of jobs discussed, local recruiters. A great opportunity.
Amie Jayne💚(she/her)🏳️‍🌈 @Amie_OT
Whatever role you go for, remember not to settle! #otalk

@otramblings @kerri_schOT #otalk maybe I should try it 🤔
deb_OT @dmay_ot
@VickySwift16 @kerri_schOT I'm in the same boat. I'm starting at a Trust 35 miles away to get a mixed rotation - fingers crossed they won't send me too far across their patch! But the kids mean that home is static and v few jobs around here so rotation is my only option for broad experience. #otalk
Zoë @ot_zoe
@VickySwift16 @kerri_schOT I've spoken to a Mum who would like to join our rotation but the rotation is full time hours and no flexibility. Is there anyone doing a rotation on part time hours? #OTalk
cherie @crc_OT
@kerri_schOT #OTalk If you have OTA experience go with what you want, otherwise go for a Placement you enjoyed, or find an OT team if you want profession specific support.
Amie Jayne💚(she/her)🏳️‍🌈 @Amie_OT
@BillWongOT @kerri_schOT Totally agree it's always great to ask the questions to prepare for different situations that may arise #otalk

Now if everyone could take a couple of mins to go and check all their tweets include the hashtag so they will show up in transcript. If missing retweet with comment and add hashtag to that. Thanks in advance! #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@Amie_OT @kerri_schOT Yes... because with teaching, it’s a good thing to show confidence so that students don’t take advantage of you still trying to figure out the rules. #otalk
deb_OT @dmay_ot
@kerri_schOT I've seen jobshare suggested but no offer of part time. Or even condensed hours which could also be an option. #otalk
Tara Watts @thelibrarianOT
@brockcookOT A mental health placement would be a great addition to a rotational or fieldwork placement. #OTalk
Sherlyn 🤔⭐️(she/her) @sherlynmelody
@otramblings @kerri_schOT #otalk that would be a beast of a commute I’m in #hertfordshire 👇🏾

Wow! Great chat guys! Really enjoyed it. Good luck to those looking for jobs - remember to come pick our brains if you want to explore options. I’m in Acute rotational, more than happy to chat :) #OTalk

@Amie_OT @kerri_schOT The class I am teaching has quite a bit of rules. The fact that I seem to grasp most of them quickly is quite good. #otalk

@kerri_schOT #OTalk no matter where you go don’t be put off if its not what you expected. A wise Senior OT suggested creating your own rotation by following your passion and you’ll succeed

@dmay_ot @kerri_schOT I am doing a part-time rotation #otalk the challenge of that is another #otalk subject altogether! but I am so pleased to be able to have a rotational post and be part time
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@otramblings @embracingOT @kerri_schOT Actually some have to do unpaid residencies for their doctoral programs in the US. From a vigor standpoint, it actually works! 😈 #otalk
