Hilary Mitchell @Ki_Transitions
#OTalk HI! I'm a first year student, so interested in finding out more about rotational roles. Planning ahead!
#OTalk @OTalk_
Question 1 #OTalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
[REDACTED USER] Yes! Exciting times! #OTalk
Zoë @ot_zoe
Hi #otalk, I am about a year and a half into my rotational OT job which was my first job after qualifying. I am interested in hearing how any of you feel when it is time to change service.
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
Hello folks! #OTalk
Abi Edwards 💙 @AbiEdwards7
@OTalk_ #OTalk Just starting to look at jobs now. I am geographically fixed, so it is about the jobs that are in the local area - probably rotational
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] Static- pediatrics. #otalk
Zoë @ot_zoe
[REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ Did you always know that you wanted to work in this area? #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] I think that is not a bad idea if you are uncertain in what to work in with less than 5 years of experience. #otalk
Debra Hughes @Debraj_OT
@OTalk_ 3rd year Coventry student. Very interested in this weeks OT talk. #OTalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Question 2 #OTalk
Debra Hughes @Debraj_OT
[REDACTED USER] Not due to qualify till May ish. However I have just applied for rotational position. Super excited, feel i would be better suited at rotational and give me a good base for learning differnet areas #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] I never did it... but I know some people bounce around different settings. The collection of experiences is great if you are still looking for a permanent setting to call home. A side benefit is that you can be quite versatile in academia if you choose to teach. #otalk
Debra Hughes @Debraj_OT
[REDACTED USER] Enhance your learning opportunities. #OTalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
[REDACTED USER] @therapy2optimum Remember to add the hashtag to your tweets Emma. We don’t want to miss them :) #OTalk
Angela Yeomans @AngelaYeOT
I'm nearly 4 months into a rotational post, my first qualified OT post. I'm working in a health care for the older person team. I really love it. It is really challenging and very busy and I'm learning a lot #otalk
Abi Edwards 💙 @AbiEdwards7
[REDACTED USER] Forgot #OTalk
Debra Hughes @Debraj_OT
[REDACTED USER] Thank you, very excited #OTalk
Angela Yeomans @AngelaYeOT
I'm lucky that the preceptorship programme is very structured and there is a lot of support from senior members of staff. I am on a great ward with really good understanding of the role of therapy. It is great to develop MDT working skills and core OT skills #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] I never thought I would teach physical disabilities! But the collection of experiences in my setting made me take placement students... and eventually teach. #otalk
Zoë @ot_zoe
[REDACTED USER] I'm doing a mixed rotation and I think this is developing my skills in different areas. I think there is diversity in my thinking from having more variety in my experiences. I can bring ideas from my previous role to my new one. #OTalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
[REDACTED USER] Remember the hashtag Emma. We don’t want to mss your valuable contributions to the chat. #OTalk.
Zoë @ot_zoe
[REDACTED USER] I do think it would be nice to stay somewhere longer term to have time to follow ideas through more #OTalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Question 3 #OTalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
@mgood1984 @ot_zoe Just one T in #OTalk Michelle. :)
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] Reason why I still keep my static full time job as opposed to going all the way with teaching- seniority can be important in the US. So I want to explore teaching first before I fully move on board. #otalk
Angela Yeomans @AngelaYeOT
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] I found it less enjoyable on my community placements than my hospital based placement. There was less structure and guidance I felt. That is why I opted to try to get an hospital based rotation. #otalk Time is still an issue but at least you are near to colleagues
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] Me would be a combination of 1/4 teaching, 1/2 clinical, and 1/4 globe trotting to present at OT conferences. #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
One of the most important rules of #OTalk is remember the hashtag so we can all see your tweets in the conversation. https://t.co/3cQktylW9H
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] I don’t think I would fit well with a rotation either. I probably would have just understood what the setting is about and then I would have to switch. #otalk
Angela Yeomans @AngelaYeOT
[REDACTED USER] #otalk I've not found this so far. Been lucky that my senior OT who i worked with initially wanted to ensure I didn't feel this way. So much to learn but I have been treated as a qualified OT, not as a student where I felt under scrutiny and there was huge power imbalance.
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] I think we all went through this kind of phase- whether the post is static or rotational. We have to be comfortable where we might be uncomfortable. #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Question 4 #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] I can relate in my static job. Being at so many nursing homes and having my schedule changed constantly is very difficult to get used to. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] At least with rotational.. you probably won’t have to deal with sudden changes with little or no notice with workplaces like mine. #otalk
Zoë @ot_zoe
I think it is helpful to make links with the other people on your rotation. Good to chat with other people experiencing being newly qualified and changing roles. #OTalk
Angela Yeomans @AngelaYeOT
[REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ #otalk i'm in my first rotation so not experienced this yet, we get to stay about 12 months in first rotation, then rotate every 6 months after that. I'm worried i won't like a rotation but I am looking forward to broadening my experience when the time comes to move on.
Zoë @ot_zoe
@BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] Good point, planned change can be easier than surprise change! #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] In a place like LA... the job market can get over saturated in some settings. Therefore, some people will have no choice but to piece meal their working hours so that they can support themselves and/or families. #otalk
Abi Edwards 💙 @AbiEdwards7
[REDACTED USER] #otalk Is it a belief that being qualified ensures ‘enough’ skill to be able to practice safely, but acknowledges that in a band 5 position there is still a vast amount of learning going on, and doing this in different environments makes rounded OTs?
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@ot_zoe [REDACTED USER] Yes- in my setting... sometimes one person not available can cause lots of sudden changes. That is why I sometimes am mad sometimes because people don’t make timely call out’s for not coming to work. #otalk
Zoë @ot_zoe
@OTalk_ I'm not sure about the balance but doing one of the rotations was the only way to get band 5 paediatric experience. I think there might be more static mental health jobs than physical locally. #OTalk
Abi Edwards 💙 @AbiEdwards7
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] #otalk That seems to be the case at the mo....mostly rotational
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@embracingOT [REDACTED USER] I would actually dare some OT students will actually get into the nitty gritty of organizing a TEDx event. 😈 it might not be clinical at all... but the community element can be pretty apparent. #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Question 5 #OTalk
Zoë @ot_zoe
@LindsayOTPICU [REDACTED USER] How different were the roles? Did you find that your skills transferred easily between settings when you had the interviews? #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Not all OT’s feel confident that they want to enter one setting after they qualify. I never thought I would end up in rehab... as I did the worst in school. But I worked hard to be competent therapist. #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] remember the hashtag in all the tweets #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] @embracingOT [REDACTED USER] I actually find out how fun that is. I think the dynamic shifted for me a bit when I realized I also have to pay the event’s bills. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] @embracingOT [REDACTED USER] TED actually went through a big overhaul of rule changes a few days ago. So it should be a little more fun again to organize these. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ I think a panel or debate will be a great idea. #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] remember the hashtag in all your tweets so they show up in transcript. #OTalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Question 6 #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] If you fail in your first job, treat it as a learning opportunity. I know I failed miserably with my first job performance wise. But in looking back, I actually would have gotten ripped off pay wise had I stayed. #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
it’s the last 5 mins of tonight’s #OTalk. Any take home thoughts? or final questions.
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Yes- like with my new teaching job yesterday... I probably asked the most interesting questions at the on site orientation. I want to show that I am willing to learn the craft. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] I know with me with teaching... always know what are the policies ahead of time is better than thinking about what to do at the moment. #otalk
Angela Yeomans @AngelaYeOT
[REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ #otalk we had that [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] mixture of recent graduates and senior OTs talking about their areas and experiences. Really wide range of jobs discussed, local recruiters. A great opportunity.
#OTalk @OTalk_
Remember #OTalk can count as #CPDhttps://t.co/Dnl21vqZqu https://t.co/ioqy0d87cC
Zoë @ot_zoe
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] I've spoken to a Mum who would like to join our rotation but the rotation is full time hours and no flexibility. Is there anyone doing a rotation on part time hours? #OTalk
cherie @crc_OT
[REDACTED USER] #OTalk If you have OTA experience go with what you want, otherwise go for a Placement you enjoyed, or find an OT team if you want profession specific support.
#OTalk @OTalk_
Now if everyone could take a couple of mins to go and check all their tweets include the hashtag so they will show up in transcript. If missing retweet with comment and add hashtag to that. Thanks in advance! #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Yes... because with teaching, it’s a good thing to show confidence so that students don’t take advantage of you still trying to figure out the rules. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] The class I am teaching has quite a bit of rules. The fact that I seem to grasp most of them quickly is quite good. #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
You have done amazingly well Kerri! Well done :) #OTalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
That's officially the end of #OTalk tonight, but feel free to keep chatting! Transcript posted after 24hrs. Thank you to [REDACTED USER] for hosting. https://t.co/5XroZz3bYY
cherie @crc_OT
[REDACTED USER] #OTalk no matter where you go don’t be put off if its not what you expected. A wise Senior OT suggested creating your own rotation by following your passion and you’ll succeed
Angela Yeomans @AngelaYeOT
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] I am doing a part-time rotation #otalk the challenge of that is another #otalk subject altogether! but I am so pleased to be able to have a rotational post and be part time
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] @embracingOT [REDACTED USER] Actually some have to do unpaid residencies for their doctoral programs in the US. From a vigor standpoint, it actually works! 😈 #otalk
Angela Yeomans @AngelaYeOT
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ Great advice! #otalk I always think that you can learn a lot about yourself from both positive and negative experiences too.
#OTalk @OTalk_
[REDACTED USER] Glad you enjoyed it Bethan! #OTalk
