![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Tonight's chat is hosted by [REDACTED USER], with [REDACTED USER] here on the #OTalk account (and looking forward to seeing what useful tips for students I can pick up!) |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ [REDACTED USER] Go ahead! :) #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT Can we hold up any discussions at this point? #otalk tweets are not showing up for people who are trying to follow the hashtag. |

![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ [REDACTED USER] Great insight! I think barriers are going to be question 4 in tonight's chat so you're way ahead of us! 😃 #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Frustrating! I'll do my best to find everyone's Tweets and retweet them - as long as it catches up eventually they should all be in the transcript afterwards #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] Can perform treatments and evaluations independently (unless it is something that requires supervision for certification requirements), can document what went on during treatments independently. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT #otalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Question 2! Hope the technical difficulties aren't making it too difficult for everyone to keep up with the chat - if you include the @OTalk_ tag as well as the #OTalk it'll guarantee we get to see everyone's Tweets even if the hashtag's not working! |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] As a clinical educator for my 1 week placements, I give students plenty of time to ask me questions about what they will face in future placements and eventually in practice. #otalk |

![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] And now in academia, I need to tell stories about what students may expect before they start their first placements. #otalk |

![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ [REDACTED USER] I agree- NQ occupational therapy practitioners should be proactively asking questions! They are not expected to be spoon fed with info, though. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] @carspring27 @OTalk_ [REDACTED USER] At least you are not like me yet... imagine doing 2 TEDx talks before your 5th year of practice... lol! #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ And if you are students with disabilities, finding somebody who understands what you are going through is HUGE! #otalk |
![]() | Hiral Khatri @DrHiralKhatri Same thing is happening with me as well. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ A year before I qualified, finding a qualified OT with autism was huge reassurance thing for me. That was the concrete visually I needed that I can become an OT too! #otalk |

![]() | Toks O (she/ her/ hers) @TokunboTweetz [REDACTED USER] Practice educators! Students should be given a lot more automony as the level of responsibility once you qualify can be a bit of a shock to the system 😳 @OTalk_ #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @JacquiG47 @carspring27 @OTalk_ [REDACTED USER] Well- try being the only occupational therapist at a 200+ bed facility... even though you also have occupational therapy assistants on the team treating patients on OT caseload. #otalk |

![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @TokunboTweetz @OTalk_ [REDACTED USER] I actually do that sometimes with my one weekers. If they are competent, I will give them my entire day’s schedule and I will give them appropriate level of supervision. Then, we will debrief what went well and what didn’t. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ I remembered when I did my hand therapy placement. The month before I posted on Facebook on what I needed to prepare for it. A day later, I got a textbook and looked up things on Pinterest. That was very helpful. #otalk |

![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @JacquiG47 @carspring27 @OTalk_ [REDACTED USER] Sometimes the state of business (at least in US)... you might be forced to be in such a situation. So it is important to know what you are walking into with your job interview. #otalk |
![]() | Toks O (she/ her/ hers) @TokunboTweetz @beckycooper___ [REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ All my educators were amazing but realised how much I was sheltered and protected as a student. Once qualified, you don’t have the ‘student’ title as a defence mechanism #otalk |

![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @TokunboTweetz @beckycooper___ [REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ In the US... license applicant is the last line of defense after student phase is over. But it can only be used one time until you take the licensing test for the first time. If you fail, though, you can’t apply for that again. You can’t be a practitioner until you pass. #otalk |

![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ In some job climates... if you are locum, you need to be able to learn independently without much support from senior staff. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] @carspring27 [REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ [REDACTED USER] @otalk And even new job changes too! I remembered I probably asked the most specific questions with my new teaching job last week! #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] @HeyitsjadeJade @OTalk_ [REDACTED USER] Well- this is something that this OT has been getting worse at! I am doing high wire acts and my balance is like an intense game of Jenga... lol! #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] I think how each program prepares the student is a bit different. But regardless, it is always good to connect with alumni so that you can know what to expect. #otalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Second last question and 10 minutes to go until the end of the chat! Hasn't the hour flown by? 😁 #OTalk |
![]() | Katie @Katie_Next [REDACTED USER] Being so focused on finishing the course or getting a job, you kind of forget to take the time to really prepare for practice! #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @HeyitsjadeJade @OTalk_ When the licensing responsibilities is off my shoulders for TEDx, I will feel a lot better. I am much better team member than as someone having to oversee everything. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @HeyitsjadeJade @OTalk_ The only thing I intentionally do weekly is golf. I actually sometimes treat myself to play at some awesome courses when I am away. #otalk |

![]() | Toks O (she/ her/ hers) @TokunboTweetz @OTalk_ I say this with caution: but the reality of limited resources and pressures on services. At uni, you’re sold the OT dream in reality, it’s hard to implement everything you would like to do as a holistic practitioner in practice #otalk @OTalk_ |

![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @HeyitsjadeJade @OTalk_ Haha- for me golf is meaningful because I can’t let my math brain go to waste. Although I never studied game theory, but I love this kind of math. Golf is my interactive game theory course. 🤓 #otalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Last question! It's been a great chat tonight, Twitter issues aside 😊 #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] One advice I often heard when I was in your shoes was... if you feel you have something special to offer to the profession, sometimes the moments when you need to use such specialty appear sooner than you think. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] And sometimes if you have a great opportunity to do something in OT, don’t shy away just because you are inexperienced. You have to be brave and take advantage... because it might not come around again if you hesitate. #otalk |

![]() | Toks O (she/ her/ hers) @TokunboTweetz [REDACTED USER] A down to earth conversation about managing ones own expectations and the expectations of others, learning it’s ok to say no, and to ask for help! #otalk @OTalk_ |
![]() | Nix 🤓 @thisisnix (Applicable not just to your first OT role, but to every single new OT post you’ll go into!) Spot on response here👇 #OTalk 💚👍 |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @TokunboTweetz @OTalk_ And now something I can say to OT students is- if you want to make #Othistory, you are going to work your butt off just to have a chance to do that. But if you see such an opportunity, don’t let go! #otalk |
