Time for #OTalk . I'm here 🙋‍♀️
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] A1. That's an interesting question. I think first of all, you want to get as much info about the patient's past employment history, as well as performing chart review first. After that, I think motivational interviewing will be key. #otalk

@mehelenbarnes I think motivational interviewing can be a good one. #otalk

#otalk in the past I have worked on real tasks to help the person begin to identify their limitations but also their strengths

[REDACTED USER] Personally, I seen this type of work as a patient. I have not seen that aspect at all while I was receiving OT services. #otalk
Marissa_OT @Marissa_OT
[REDACTED USER] I would say having a discussion with the client prior to meeting the employer is needed. This way you could run through with the client what you had in mind to say to the employer and also make sure everything the client wanted to get across is included #OTalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Hi Julie, please use the #OTalk hashtag in your tweets so that people following the chat can find them more easily and so that they're included in the chat transcript afterwards 😊
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@mehelenbarnes yes- absolutely. I think it is a good idea to have conversations with the patients in the beginning, but also during the process to remind the patient sometimes. #otalk

Marissa_OT @Marissa_OT
[REDACTED USER] Also, I think it is important to make the client aware that even the difficult topics need to be discussed but also linking it in to how it may affect them at work if the employer is not aware of the their difficulties in certain areas. #OTalk

Juliette Truman @Jt12Truman
I agree this is tricky - it is essential that we work with the person to establish the remit of disclosure #OTalk I believe so much goes on behind the scenes with the individual- I have done some research on this happy to share
Juliette Truman @Jt12Truman
I think it’s important to maintain the Individual’s sense of self and remember the impact that HCPs have on this and the messages we send to employers by just being involved #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] From a patient's perspective, I think you have to understand what the patients' tolerance first. #otalk
Marissa_OT @Marissa_OT
[REDACTED USER] It's all about positive risk taking. If something doesn't work out, then we need to take a step back, have a look at what we did, where it went wrong and approach the situation differently next time. I think it is also important to have a debrief after as well #OTalk
Juliette Truman @Jt12Truman
I agree we need to discuss this with our client and the employer prior to any action nothing gained without positive risk taking #OTalk

Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] @Marissa_OT [REDACTED USER] I see that personally. For me to work in my current work setting in OT actually was an example of that. Before I interviewed, I actually had low self confidence because my first OT job flopped badly. So, to go to another setting with no placement experience was scary. #otalk
Marissa_OT @Marissa_OT
@Jt12Truman Definitely! It should be an open dialogue #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] @Marissa_OT [REDACTED USER] and speaking of risk- I started as an adjunct faculty at a uni late last year. I chose to go this route instead of full time... while it was positive risk taking, but it was not so reckless at the time (as I have option to not renew contract if I didn't like it). #otalk

[REDACTED USER] Reading up on the latest literature is always a good way to stay ontop on evidence. Also having conversations with our fellow OTs about what is working for them and their clients. They may be able to point you in the direction of more evidence #OTalk
