Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@OTthoughts @RCOT_PLD @OT_rach I think it depends on your setting you work with. A common issue in our setting is when patient has pain pill for the day. Next on the list will be BP medications. #otalk

Question 1. #OTalk https://t.co/LPRSTO8fmo
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@OTthoughts @RCOT_PLD @OT_rach Timing of pain pills is probably the most important in my setting because it affects timing of when patients might like to be seen. #otalk

Q1... I am not qualified but from a personal point of view i believe that it is essential that medication issues should be discussed in MDT #OTalk

Generally switch off when meds are discussed in MDT in detail #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@HolleighLouise @OTthoughts @RCOT_PLD @OT_rach One example will be when during our MH placements or jobs. We have to learn what medications our patients are taking. #otalk

@BillWongOT @OTthoughts @RCOT_PLD @OT_rach *Drug of the week sessions, where one person from the team each week would research and introduce a drug and talk about it during MDT meetings throughout the week. I love this idea #OTALK
Ana Pires @anapire77988177
@OTthoughts @RCOT_PLD @OT_rach In my setting we do have a medication policy in place and I do ask questions and I do research about if I feel the medication will impact the function of my clients #OTalk

Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@HolleighLouise @OTthoughts @RCOT_PLD @OT_rach I think it will work with a MDT team with consistent staff. My setting- sometimes with piecemeal staffs, that would not be very effective. #otalk

@OTthoughts @BillWongOT @RCOT_PLD @OT_rach Learning about side effects is really important because it can affect our clinical reasoning. Also useful to know how long side effects are likely to last and what are seen as acceptable side effects and what indicates a need for medication change, antidepressants espec. #OTALK
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@AWebster67 @Bsidebaby_ @OTthoughts @RCOT_PLD @OT_rach In my setting- that can be a dilemma. You want an active patient with frequent behavior outbursts, or an inactive patient who is sitting on a Geri chair or tilt n space wheelchair most of the day? #otalk

@OTthoughts @HolleighLouise @RCOT_PLD @OT_rach Yes- that’s a difference between a hospital setting and say a nursing home setting in US sometimes. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@HolleighLouise @OTthoughts @RCOT_PLD @OT_rach Well- what I mean is different people almost all the time from all key rehab disciplines. There is no staff consistency in these instances. #otalk

@BillWongOT @OTthoughts @RCOT_PLD @OT_rach So do you think introducing something like posters about drug of the week would work? People may be reluctant to read them, however, if people are interested they could attend? Or an email once a week about information about a medication? #OTALK
Stephanie Lancaster @TheOutLoudOT
Excellent topic! There are open-access (free) courses on sites like Coursera on topics related to this such as neuropharmacology that are great! I feel comfortable talking many (but not all) meds. #OTalk
Rachael S-P @RaiOT1114
@OTthoughts @RCOT_PLD @OT_rach I find that a meds list will help to understand PMH when patients are poor historians #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@HolleighLouise @OTthoughts @RCOT_PLD @OT_rach In my setting, if a team is consists of fill-in or locum staff, they would care more about getting their jobs done for the day than care about these big picture things. #otalk

Question 2 #OTalk https://t.co/i4UmGLp5ca
grainne carley @gra_carley
@pjmasonOT @OTthoughts @RCOT_PLD @OT_rach Hmmm, excellent question! From my experience it was quite meaningful to many patients, and a large part of inpatient routine! Seems like we need to be talking more about this #OTalk
Stephanie Lancaster @TheOutLoudOT
#OTalk TBH some of what I know about medications and how they affect occupational performance has come from serving as a caregiver in personal situations rather than in a professional context.
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@OTthoughts This one I will answer from patient perspective. I would say it was important for me to update my OT about my response to these medications whenever I felt it was important to talk about it. #otalk
Holleigh Bryan 💚🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 @HolleighLouise
@OTthoughts Yes! By working on strategies to manage anxiety or ways to reduce challenging behaviour through sensory/communication strategies etc. we can reduce the need of anxiety meds and lorazapam #OTALK

Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
