![]() | Stephanie Lancaster @TheOutLoudOT Hello #OTalk community! I'm hosting today's chat on the topic of critical reflection. @OTalk_ |
![]() | Angela Yeomans @AngelaYeOT @TheOutLoudOT @OTalk_ hello! Good to virtually meet you #OTalk |
![]() | Stephanie Lancaster @TheOutLoudOT Here we go! Let's do a "brain dump" to kick things off - words, phrases, etc. are fine - no need for complete sentences. Q1: What do you know about critical reflection? #OTalk @OTalk_ |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT Hello! #otalk |
![]() | Stephanie Lancaster @TheOutLoudOT Yes! All good associations when we're thinking about critical reflection! #OTalk https://t.co/RRLgICW7PU |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @TheOutLoudOT @OTalk_ One that requires deep thoughts... and in our practice setting, that may mean a deeper look on how to improve our practice. #otalk |
![]() | Stephanie Lancaster @TheOutLoudOT Yes! That's a great way to define the term of critical reasoning. #OTalk https://t.co/IFF6UkCysh |
![]() | Stephanie Lancaster @TheOutLoudOT Yes! An excellent distinction! #OTalk https://t.co/mrehLuz5Yy |
![]() | Angela Yeomans @AngelaYeOT @TheOutLoudOT @OTalk_ #otalk, reflections on feelings and actions related to a particular event and creation of action plan to manage/improve response to future events |

![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @TheOutLoudOT @OTalk_ Yes- part of our growth mindset mentality. #otalk |
![]() | Stephanie Lancaster @TheOutLoudOT Lots of excellent points and great associations when we're thinking about critical reflection. As a few people mentioned, there is a more complex component to it as compared to basic reflection. #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ hi folks... sorry been a mix up [REDACTED USER] just jumping into account.... give me a shout if you need. #OTALK |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT And speaking of this topic- here is a TEDx talk for it. https://t.co/FmG1i2JOu1 #otalk |
![]() | Stephanie Lancaster @TheOutLoudOT Let's move on ... Q2: How have you been taught or otherwise learned about the process of critical reflection? #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT RT @TheOutLoudOT: Lots of excellent points and great associations when we're thinking about critical reflection. As a few people mentioned,… |

![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] @KimBellOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @TheOutLoudOT @OTalk_ Being part of @IamAnOT17 curator really forced me to think a couple weeks ago. Since I am not a daily blogger, I really have to think long and hard on what to write. Some entries took me 2-3 hours! #otalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ #otalk Q2..... https://t.co/YzSCTXKNcK |
![]() | Stephanie Lancaster @TheOutLoudOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ Yes, it can be challenging for sure! Especially in the midst of an overloaded schedule. #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @TheOutLoudOT @OTalk_ I think my new nickname should be TED expert... lol! #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @TheOutLoudOT @OTalk_ I don’t like paper and then internet when blogging. I prefer freewriting and then edit it as I go. #otalk |

![]() | Stephanie Lancaster @TheOutLoudOT @KimBellOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ Yes! Think in terms of universal design for learning and you'll see that there are many options for recording critical reflections (word clouds, drawings, video, etc.). You don't have to stick with writing - it's more about the thought process than the output method. #OTalk |
![]() | Stephanie Lancaster @TheOutLoudOT Excellent resource!!! Something to check out for anyone who isn't already familiar or just needs a refresher. #OTalk https://t.co/rOiLS73CxB |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @TheOutLoudOT [REDACTED USER] @KimBellOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ @IamAnOT17 I tend to be very wordy when I write my blogs. I think most entries at least are 800 words, if not more. #otalk |

![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] My blog entries are like mini papers... lol! #otalk |
![]() | Stephanie Lancaster @TheOutLoudOT YES! I hope those who don't prefer writing or who need an alternative to writing - even if just on occasion - are aware of this type of strategy. #OTalk https://t.co/kWBWqoEWTL |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @KimBellOT [REDACTED USER] @TheOutLoudOT @OTalk_ Concisely is hard for me. #nonnativespeakerproblems #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @KimBellOT @TheOutLoudOT @OTalk_ I am the total opposite. Let the words flow... haha! #otalk |
![]() | Stephanie Lancaster @TheOutLoudOT @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] @KimBellOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ @IamAnOT17 A good goal may be to work on becoming more concise. That will help further develop critical thinking skills and also be easier to keep up with from a blog reader's standpoint. #OTalk |
![]() | Stephanie Lancaster @TheOutLoudOT I love this connection! I agree it is much more likely to be those who have a growth mindset who engage in true critical reflection. #OTalk https://t.co/0CkOuTiLrO |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ [REDACTED USER] welcome #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @TheOutLoudOT [REDACTED USER] @KimBellOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ @IamAnOT17 I try to not sound too clunky when I write. I prefer soft limits because I don’t want to think too be like “oh crap! 100 words too much!” #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT And for me when I am writing blogs- I think in Chinese first before writing in English. That is hard enough! #otalk |
![]() | Stephanie Lancaster @TheOutLoudOT OK, so we've talked about what critical reflection IS, how we've learned about it, and how we do it. Here's Q4: How can OT students and practitioners improve their ability to critically reflect? @OTalk_ #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ thank for sharing #OTalk https://t.co/HftcyF8jgG |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] @AngelaOTstudent On my entries- I sometimes love bullet points. That is one of my strategies to cut down words. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] @TheOutLoudOT [REDACTED USER] @KimBellOT [REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ @IamAnOT17 One pro- I do say it will help with conference abstract writing! #otalk |
![]() | Stephanie Lancaster @TheOutLoudOT @ellarose044 Yes! We know from the research that one is more likely to grow and to benefit from critical reflection when it's done as part of a regular routine. #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @TheOutLoudOT @OTalk_ Here is an easy one- find some buddies to help one another to become better. And they also should not be afraid to ask some hard and deep questions! #otalk |
![]() | Stephanie Lancaster @TheOutLoudOT SO TRUE! That's something that pretty much forces us to be concise and succinct with our words! #OTalk https://t.co/gbIlJglURt |
![]() | Stephanie Lancaster @TheOutLoudOT Yes! Excellent way to explain this. #OTalk https://t.co/mcHXuRJHDd |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ #otalk Q4 https://t.co/BiQw5pyMfD |
![]() | Stephanie Lancaster @TheOutLoudOT @BillWongOT @OTalk_ So in that way, you're advocating "outlouding" the process of critical reflection, correct? #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] I should have written about that in my @IamAnOT17 entry! But anyway... concept -> what I think the blog will say in Chinglish -> translate into English. I say Chinglish because I don’t have the OT and OS concepts in Chinese all the time. #otalk |
![]() | Stephanie Lancaster @TheOutLoudOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] How do you assess? Is there scoring criteria? #OTalk |
![]() | Angela Yeomans @AngelaYeOT @TheOutLoudOT @OTalk_ Q4 Practice it regularly, try new reflective models share reflections with supervisor or with peers. Listen to their feedback or questions about them. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @TheOutLoudOT @OTalk_ Yes- and also is a win-win for everyone... because everyone will help the other people better! #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] @TheOutLoudOT @OTalk_ I was thinking about that because I have done some #otleadershiplive podcasts for AOTA and for each episode, I am invited to think of some critical reflection questions for the guests. #otalk |

![]() | Stephanie Lancaster @TheOutLoudOT [REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ Good idea - and that can be done in a live, face-to-face format OR in a live or recorded virtual context. Are you familiar with the app Marco Polo? It facilitates this process by allowing group members to record and view each other's video messages via the app. @Otalk #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @TheOutLoudOT @KimBellOT @OTalk_ @IamAnOT17 I sure have in just 2 years time. A good one when I thought about my reflections of doing my first TEDx talk with remote possibility doing additional ones vs. after doing my second TEDx talk. #otalk |
![]() | Stephanie Lancaster @TheOutLoudOT Something that I have learned to do to improve critical reflection is to think about the different components that are needed (see image), especially in terms of differentiating CR apart from basic reflection or summarizing. #Otalk @OTalk https://t.co/zEeC1ApwtE |
![]() | Stephanie Lancaster @TheOutLoudOT This is awesome! Meta-reflection is an important part of improving our critical reflection skills, and it's so much fun to pull out things from OT school when those days are behind us! #OTalk https://t.co/gOMpFzqSnJ |

![]() | Debra Hughes @Debraj_OT #OTalk reflection is key and we have been introduced to Gibbs and Borton at Uni. I was also guided on placement to use Johns. They told me that it would help me be a lot more critical when reflecting. I try and use a combinations of frameworks to help expand my learning. |

![]() | Debra Hughes @Debraj_OT @TheOutLoudOT #Otalk i have tired to reflect on all daily aspects of life before Uni . Then introduced to Gibbs at Uni now i try and plan reflections to be critical. Sometimes.it works lol |
![]() | Stephanie Lancaster @TheOutLoudOT [REDACTED USER] @otalk Certainly there are many ways to visualize this process. There's more detail in the blog post that may lead you to thinking about other ways to break down the components if needed. https://t.co/c3RPqeChdI #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] And when I go to conferences- I always ask myself after every workshop- what did I learn here? What can I carryover to my workplace? Or in terms of keynotes/plenary speeches- what did I learn here? What can I carryover to be a better all around practitioner? #otalk |
![]() | Stephanie Lancaster @TheOutLoudOT @Debraj_OT :) For sure critical reflection is a work in progress!! #OTalk |

![]() | Stephanie Lancaster @TheOutLoudOT [REDACTED USER] @otalk Thanks, David - it can at least be a way to start a dialogue about what the expectations or guidelines for true evidence-based critical reflection are. Feel free to modify as you see fit. This is just one of many ways the process can be broken down. #OTalk |

![]() | Debra Hughes @Debraj_OT @TheOutLoudOT #Otalk i agree....i think when our depth of writing as a year 2 is increasing this may develop in time as we are now critiquing assignments now in more depth. |
![]() | Stephanie Lancaster @TheOutLoudOT A couple of ideas for goals: (1) Create a critical reflection after attending a professional development course by July 1, 2018. (2) Critically reflect in an alternate way, other than in writing, at least 1x in 2018. #OTalk |
![]() | Stephanie Lancaster @TheOutLoudOT OK, that's a wrap on our discussion on critical reflection. Thanks all for participating. I hope this chat has been helpful and look forward to continuing to interact with y'all (as we say in Tennessee, USA, where I am) on Twitter! #OTalk @OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Well that is the end of the official hour #Otalk do keep chatting, we won't collate the transcript for at least 24hrs. |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] @ErinOTstudent @TheOutLoudOT @OTalk_ I remembered when I saw some of you guys’ blog entries way back when- I was blown away in the depth of reflection of these entries. So intentionally to blog once every week or 2 has been my goal. I think I can do it. Just have to put my mind to it. #otalk |
