Hello dudes and ladies! (Fitting words for tonight’s #otalk 🤓)
#OTalk @OTalk_
Hi there Ryan #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Right then over to [REDACTED USER] with the first question. #OTalk https://t.co/5GWXataFS9
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
RT @OTalk_: Welcome to tonight’s #OTalk The last of 2019. [REDACTED USER] on the account tonight. Before we get started I’ll re-cap the ground r…
#OTalk @OTalk_
Don’t forget that # in every single tweet otherwise you end up on my naughty step. #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Lurkers are always welcome #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@OTalk_ Maybe we should use “the penalty box” (from hockey reference) for today’s theme... lol! #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Hello @mcwalser please wait for the questions. And please include the hashtag in all of your tweets otherwise people will not see what you’re saying and it will not end up on the transcript. The hashtag is #OTalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Marcus you forgot the hashtag! 😫 #OTalk please please please please please remember the #!!!
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] Good question- I admit OT was relatively bottom on my list when I went for my undergrad degree. I thought I would be a math teacher. Anatomy and physiology were my archnemesis in high school. #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Please include the hashtag not the @. The hashtag is #OTalk ( you must include the hashtag in every single tweet)
#OTalk @OTalk_
Remember that # #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Thank you for remembering #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
That # again #OTalk
Valentino Broomzz @iamValentine_OT
Hi #OTalk let's do this
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] I also will say- I initially was intimidated when I saw so many women in my OT class! I was one of 8 men in a class of almost 120 people. #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Question 1 #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Penalty box idea is from NHL. #wrongleague #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Yes I remember that! Very frustrating #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Top Tip: it’s probably not possible to follow every tweet & conversation thread in the chat. So focus on the ones that are most relevant to you - you can catch up later. There will also be a transcript! #OTalk https://t.co/sPtPNeNaRz
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] I have not done a formal count, but I also see that from OT tedx’s. I think the total number of women outnumbered men... even though it was a man (me) who broke this glass ceiling! #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Don’t forget the hashtag #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Haha! I have almost 200k tweets. So odds of me remembering a particular tweet is super slim. 😂 #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
[REDACTED USER] do you want to be my naughty step? don’t forget that # in every single tweet. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@rainkingswales @OTalk_ When I got introduced to the field, I also never knew there were so few men. So I have to practice my adaptation skills from day 1... lol! #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
You’re just need to use the #otalk not @OTalk_ in your tweets.
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@MarkMarkOT I think that is why I decide to be an online influencer so that I can be one for the broOT’s. #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
[REDACTED USER] But that’s the rules! 🤓 #OTalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Welcome #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
#OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
I do say there have been some men for AOTA Slagle lecturers in this decade. I would say at least 3 men did it. So that’s progress! #otalk
Valentino Broomzz @iamValentine_OT
[REDACTED USER] Oops #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
#otalk the easiest way to remember the # in every single tweet is to start every single tweet with the hashtag! https://t.co/Rv7MIcU1uQ
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@Alexander_P_OT @MarkMarkOT Well- it is actually popular in the USA. There used to be a group of OT guys who make T-shirts to promote men in the profession. #otalk
Graham Walker @IAPT_Graham
[REDACTED USER] I’m here but late. #OTalk #BroTalk This is meaty. Personally I think that research has shown that gender differences, whether from genetics or social factors, lead females towards more ‘caring professions’ which I think is how OT is viewed
#OTalk @OTalk_
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] That film was horrendous! #otalk
@Metcalfing
[REDACTED USER] #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
[REDACTED USER] Lots of new people! #OTalk but yes so far my naughty step is full.
Holleigh Bryan 💚🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 @HolleighLouise
[REDACTED USER] There’s a lot of talk about gender stereotypes putting men off caring roles but I wonder how much society and norms steers women towards caring roles and men towards other types of professions during their upbringing? #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@Alexander_P_OT @MarkMarkOT Now there is another twitter account named @bro_ot. Don’t think it’s the same group of people. #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Question 2 #OTalk
Graham Walker @IAPT_Graham
[REDACTED USER] #OTalk OT was the profession that most aligned with my values that I could do with a grant or being paid to train
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] At that time, it was a personal suggestion from my mom on what to do with my life and career. Somehow I lucked out and found my niche after having some struggles. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@dyspraxicot [REDACTED USER] I felt the same way after year 1 in OT school... since that was when I found out I am autistic. #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Ha ha #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] I never ever thought I would end up with so many wonderful lady friends for life. But I will gladly take it. #otalk
Graham Walker @IAPT_Graham
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Im not happy about it either but the research shows it in so many fields #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@Alexander_P_OT [REDACTED USER] @MarkMarkOT I think that can be a cultural thing. If I were studying in HK, I would have wondered the same thing! #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Very interesting thought hear! #otalk
Valentino Broomzz @iamValentine_OT
[REDACTED USER] I connected with the values of the profession. Doing my own research on OT. I never saw gender, masculinity or feminism. At that time, (and still now) occupation is boundless and inclusive. However, when i started studying i was thrown back by being the only lad #otalk 😅
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@SarahInnes16 [REDACTED USER] @OT_Graham I will defy the stereotype, other than my travel adventures, I am quite a boring person since I don’t have much of a social life. I need to save for my travels. 🤓 #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Don’t forget that # #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
We are now halfway through the chat! #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Please remember to include the hashtag in all your tweets, otherwise people will not see what you’re saying and your tweet will not be included in the transcript. #OTalk https://t.co/pBKU7efI1E
La-Rayba Parveen @LaRayba_OT
@OTalk_ #OTalk 😂🙈
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@SarahInnes16 [REDACTED USER] @OT_Graham Lol- I know my OT CPD expense is expensive. It’s an expensive upkeep to pay as someone who goes around the globe for OT conferences. #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Question 3 #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Welcome #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] I was used to the opposite in primary school in Hong Kong (an all boys school). So at least I had some experiences before OT in terms of being overwhelmingly one sided gender wise. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] And interesting if you have to grade practicums of students doing toileting and bathing too. #otalk
Graham Walker @IAPT_Graham
@MarkMarkOT @brockcookOT It could shift the dynamic of the profession, how it is seen and the role that it fulfills. Service users often reposed differently to males than females. Those static traits you can’t control #OTalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Don’t forget to put the hashtag in all your tweets otherwise you won’t be in the thread! #otalk https://t.co/MZGHnewBSZ
Valentino Broomzz @iamValentine_OT
[REDACTED USER] The only setting I can think of, could be working in male or female prisons. Having said that, I don't think that should limit where you work. I think mentality goes a long way #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@SarahInnes16 [REDACTED USER] In nursing home environments, there are some places where male staff outnumber female staff! #otalk
Graham Walker @IAPT_Graham
[REDACTED USER] I work with quite a few male OTs in mental health. #OTalk
Graham Walker @IAPT_Graham
@Laura_Does [REDACTED USER] Absolutely. #OTalk
@Metcalfing
@brockcookOT [REDACTED USER] @OT_Graham This just about sums it up for me. The more I learned about OT the more I thought ‘huh, this sounds like a good match! #otalk
Graham Walker @IAPT_Graham
[REDACTED USER] Female Personality Disorder units potentially. If people have suffered sexual abuse from males that could be difficult #OTalk I don’t want to get into the complexity of this with [REDACTED USER] though cos we all know he votes Brexit
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@SarahInnes16 [REDACTED USER] I worked in a nursing home in USA where all OT staff are males. #otalk
Kwaku Agyemang @KwakuOT
[REDACTED USER] I Don’t Think There Is...Just Personal Preferences I Suppose. I Personally Loved My Trauma & Orthopaedic Placement But At The Same Confirmed To Me That I Wouldn’t Want To Work In A General Hospital Setting. #OTalk
@Metcalfing
[REDACTED USER] Well I was looking for new careers. I took a long hard look at nursing and social work, but then that very same week I met my gf’s (now wife) mum who was OTA and then my grandad needed OT. It was destiny and the 1st time I’d heard of OT #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@SarahInnes16 [REDACTED USER] Speaking of Scottish... need to revisit there again. I hope RCOT will be back in Scotland so that I can visit again... especially with my improved golf game! #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Yes we’ve already talked about him however he turned into a physiotherapist by the end! #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] I actually enjoy the spread that we have now. I think my informal poll shows that about 70% of my close OT friends are females. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@SarahInnes16 [REDACTED USER] Yes- and satisfy a golf bucket list item for me- playing at the home of golf in St. Andrew’s! #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] I do hear that one graduating class of physio’s are actually 50-50 at USC (American one in California). #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Question 4 #otalk
Kwaku Agyemang @KwakuOT
[REDACTED USER] @OT_Graham [REDACTED USER] 👀...#OTalk
@Metcalfing
[REDACTED USER] Potentially, but then surely that applies to other professions as well. I do however think certain areas are perceived as more desirable for men. In my NHS, male OT’s are perhaps 1 in 10, surely well above the average? #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
15 minutes left #OTalk
@Metcalfing
[REDACTED USER] In my nhs trust lol, I don’t speak for the NHS 😂 #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Don’t forget that # #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] I made the opinion because I am generally a ladies’ man. So being part of the gender minority is fine with me. 😁 #otalk
Graham Walker @IAPT_Graham
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Could well be true but I hate restraint and never want anything to do with it. Just re did my training and hated it #Otalk
Graham Walker @IAPT_Graham
@brockcookOT @MarkMarkOT Mate, powerful words. This is why you is the boss #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
I do think it is more important to get quality professionals, period, then trying to balance out the gender mix of our profession. Quality > quantity should also apply to the graduates we produce! #OTalk
@Metcalfing
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] I think this is a significant impact and reduces choice. I don’t work in a team. The people I see don’t get a choice to see a female OT and it’s something I often check if they’re ok sharing #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] It would make a fascinating future debate at a major OT conference. Maybe bring it up again in RCOT in the future? #otalk
Valentino Broomzz @iamValentine_OT
[REDACTED USER] Oops again #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
[REDACTED USER] That’s why am here to remind you! #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Don’t forget that # #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] I have adopted the “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” mentality since I stepped into OT school. #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Question 5. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @SarahInnes16 [REDACTED USER] I think this needs to be a collective effort. We have our own ways. For example, look at Michael Iwama and his Kawa model. Gary Kielhofner and MOHO. #otalk
Graham Walker @IAPT_Graham
@Alexander_P_OT [REDACTED USER] Ok and how do we do that? #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] Hmmm... I will say we all should play a role to get more men to consider the profession in ways that we do best. #otalk #strengthsbasedapproach
#OTalk @OTalk_
Only five minutes left any final thoughts? #OTalk? https://t.co/alSr5qStqP
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
And even if they can’t be therapists, men can also consider being assistants (where you can get qualified in Canada and USA, I believe) #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
[REDACTED USER] It’s just one T in the hashtag It’s pronounced O talk #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Don’t forget to use the correct #!!! #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
[REDACTED USER] 😁 #OTalk
Kwaku Agyemang @KwakuOT
[REDACTED USER] In My View, I Don’t Think Anything Should Be Done. I Don’t Really See It As An Issue. #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@OTalk_ I will do my best to continue to travel around the globe... so that students and practitioners can have somebody to reference to if they have male friends wanting to go into occupational therapy. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@OTalk_ And of course... thank you to a wonderful 2019 year of #Otalk. Can’t believe this is the last one. Can’t wait what 2020 will bring! https://t.co/7aV1AgTEHO
#OTalk @OTalk_
And it’s 9 pm! That’s the hour over everyone. And the end of the chat #otalk https://t.co/x6tAfZv8Yk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
[REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ And also “occupational therapy assistant” in some countries! In the USA, our assistants are qualified too! #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
This is me [REDACTED USER] signing off, really enjoyed supporting tonight. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all of us here at #otalk see you in 2020. https://t.co/Huy50SKzbm
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@SarahInnes16 [REDACTED USER] We need more male pioneers... that’s for sure! #otalk
Graham Walker @IAPT_Graham
[REDACTED USER] @KwakuOT [REDACTED USER] There are definitely pros and cons to any change and research may help figure out what is best to do #OTalk
Valentino Broomzz @iamValentine_OT
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] 😂😂 how can an entire country be exotic? #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
See everyone in 2020! #otalk https://t.co/05qE4xWxdR
Kwaku Agyemang @KwakuOT
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] It’s A Fair Point. Ultimately Though, If The People We All Work With Are Getting Good Outcomes Then It Should Not Really Matter Who Is Delivering The Therapy. In Times Of Need, You Need The Best Person With The Traits And Personality For The Job, No Matter The Gender. #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@Laura_Does @Alexander_P_OT @debbieduckie [REDACTED USER] Soon we will have some 90’s kids OT faculty teaching students... if not already so! #otalk #timeflies
Valentino Broomzz @iamValentine_OT
[REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ Nice one Marcus. Great topic, all the best with your studies! #otalk
Kwaku Agyemang @KwakuOT
@OT_Graham [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] 100% Right...I Would Be More Concerned With The Diversity In Terms Of Culture & Ethnicity Rather Than Gender In The Profession At Present. #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@Alexander_P_OT @Laura_Does @debbieduckie [REDACTED USER] In a few years we can have some millennials as practice educators. #otalk
Kwaku Agyemang @KwakuOT
🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️...#ExoticMan #OTalk
Lauren Osborne (@laurenosborneot.bsky.social) @LaurenOsborneOT
[REDACTED USER] I think the difficulty of a female dominated profession is recruitment at B6 level bcoz typically women having children, leaving or going part time. So hard to keep/find B6’s! Very general comment but I’m sure it’s a theory! Most male OTs I’ve met are Australian 🇦🇺 #OTalk
Valentino Broomzz @iamValentine_OT
I found out about OT and applied a week before the application deadline at University. #otalk
@adamdePrimo
[REDACTED USER] Culturally speaking, I think pediatrics. I work in peds (outpatient & acute) - I def get ?'s as to why I started working with kids, but if anything, I find pediatrics to be a great avenue for male OTs- offering role models and other relevant insight #OTalk
