![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Good evening and welcome to this evening’s #OTalk Research chat. We are delighted to welcome [REDACTED USER] who will be leading our chat this evening. It’s [REDACTED USER] on the @OTalk_ account this evening. Who is joining us / lurking? Do say hi 👋 |
![]() | Dr Jenny Preston MBE @preston_jenny @OTalk_ [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Hi everyone, really pleased to be joining in tonight #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Remember the rules of #OTalk ... don’t forget your professional code of conduct, have fun and don’t forget the # (note to self there!!) |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Our host tonight is [REDACTED USER] who is experiencedin conducting research with people who are living with dementia. Would you like to lead off with Q1 Naomi? #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Q1 from [REDACTED USER] #OTalk (I forgot to use the # already 🤭) |
![]() | Dr Jenny Preston MBE @preston_jenny [REDACTED USER] People with cognitive impairments due to neurological conditions #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ What does the acronym PLMD stand for [REDACTED USER] please? #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ That is an interesting point [REDACTED USER] .... does anyone else have anything to add to that? #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Thank you for your broad examples so far. Here is Q2 from [REDACTED USER] #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ This could be a potential barrier @Laura_Does ... could anyone give examples of ways they have addressed this? #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ In my experience ([REDACTED USER]) this can be a real problem .... people can act as gatekeepers and make assumptions without making the information accessible so that the person can make their own choice #OTalk |
![]() | Dr Jenny Preston MBE @preston_jenny @Carolin64109281 [REDACTED USER] There is also a perception of appropriateness, or otherwise, of including people with life limiting conditions although that perception does not necessarily come from people with MND #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Did you find a way to address this or was the project not able to progress beyond ethics? @Carolin64109281 #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Have you found the requirements of the ethics committee to be a barrier or facilitator in this regard? [REDACTED USER] #OTalk [REDACTED USER] |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Q3 from [REDACTED USER] How can we overcome these barriers and ensure that people without capacity to consent to research are included? #OTalk |
![]() | Dr Jenny Preston MBE @preston_jenny @Carolin64109281 [REDACTED USER] My experience is that people with MND are really keen to be involved in research. Some excellent opportunities coming up soon 🤔 #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Thanks for the signpost [REDACTED USER] .... accessing training in involving people who lack capacity is an important step, and marries nicely in with GCP training too [REDACTED USER] #OTalk |
![]() | Dr Jenny Preston MBE @preston_jenny [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] This is a good point but for me capacity to consent and attrition are not one and the same. However methodology and research design are key to considering all of these factors #OTalk |
![]() | Dr Jenny Preston MBE @preston_jenny [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] I’m not sure that I would agree, sorry! My qualitative research interviews allow me to get to know my participants just as well, if not even better than my clinical interviews #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ There is provision under the mental capacity act to use a personal or nominated consultee in order to facilitate involvement of a person who lacks capacity [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Good point [REDACTED USER] #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ A great practical suggestion @emilyoliverdem ... what are people’s experiences of using these methods ? #OTalk [REDACTED USER] |
![]() | Dr Jenny Preston MBE @preston_jenny [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] This will definitely be challenged by the ethics committee specifically in relation to the potential benefits or otherwise of research participation. This could be quite hard to argue despite the fact that all research helps others in some way #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ We’re flowing nicely into Q4 from [REDACTED USER] now ... please share methods and methodologies to enable inclusive research #OTalk |
![]() | Dr Jenny Preston MBE @preston_jenny [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] That’s quite common [REDACTED USER] #OTalk |
![]() | Dr Jenny Preston MBE @preston_jenny @emilyoliverdem I think it depends on the committee and the proposal #OTalk |
![]() | Dr Jenny Preston MBE @preston_jenny @Laura_Does [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] That’s it in a nutshell #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Hi @ToukieM don’t forget to add the # to your tweets so we can see them in the chat 👍 #OTalk https://t.co/UBwBe7AnnR |
![]() | Dr Jenny Preston MBE @preston_jenny [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] There are opportunities for us all to get involved with your local ethics committee. I thoroughly recommend it. Joining the ethics committee was one of the best things I did as a novice researcher #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ How would a person go about doing this @preston_jenny ? #OTalk [REDACTED USER] |
![]() | Dr Jenny Preston MBE @preston_jenny [REDACTED USER] I think that depends on the research question. I worry about choosing methodologies ahead of the question. Whatever the methodology there needs to be a genuine need for the research and for evidence that all ethical principles are being adhered to #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Have you found accessible ways to include people who lack capacity in quantitative studies such as RCTs? #OTalk [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] |
![]() | Dr Jenny Preston MBE @preston_jenny [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Hear hear [REDACTED USER] #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ [REDACTED USER] Thanks for joining us from Australia [REDACTED USER] #OTalk |
![]() | Dr Jenny Preston MBE @preston_jenny @OTalk_ [REDACTED USER] Speak to your local R&D Lead or Manager, then apply for vacancies as they occur. You get access to all sorts of training into the bargain #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Final 10 minutes of our chat now #OTalk ... time for one more question from [REDACTED USER]? |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Q5 from [REDACTED USER] #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Don’t forget to add the # [REDACTED USER] so we can join in with your comments. Thank you 😊 #OTalk |
![]() | Dr Jenny Preston MBE @preston_jenny [REDACTED USER] Is it about the research questions and how we make research accessible to wider groups. If someone genuinely doesn’t have capacity to consent then I’m not sure how we get round that #OTalk |
![]() | Graham Walker @IAPT_Graham [REDACTED USER] If research is focussed on assessment or intervention which is likely in their best interest and we work with carers to gain their consent that could work to be more inclusive #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ As long as the research needs to involve people who lack capacity the mental capacity act can enable participation by using a nominated consultee .... but .... the researcher MUST attend to the responses of the participant i.e. ensure that assent is present #OTalk |
![]() | Dr Jenny Preston MBE @preston_jenny RT @OTalk_: As long as the research needs to involve people who lack capacity the mental capacity act can enable participation by using a n… |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Any final thoughts on tonight’s #OTalk topic? #OTalk [REDACTED USER] |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Well, that’s all we’ve got time for tonight #OTalk. Thank you for all of your contributions and to [REDACTED USER] for leading this lively chat. Look out for the transcript which will be posted in a few days. |
![]() | Dr Jenny Preston MBE @preston_jenny [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Additionally our psychology colleagues can give very helpful guidance and support re capacity to consent both in clinical practice and research #OTalk |
![]() | Dr Jenny Preston MBE @preston_jenny @OTalk_ [REDACTED USER] Thanks everyone, that was very stimulating and thought provoking tonight. I look forward to seeing lots of occupational therapists joining ethics committees 🤔 #OTalk. Thanks [REDACTED USER] and [REDACTED USER] great job 👏👏 |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ This was our final #OTalk Research of the year .... thank you to everyone who has contributed during the research chats over the past 12 months. The regular @OTalk team will be back next. Good night all [REDACTED USER] signing off 👋 |
