![]() | Beck Skelton OT 🐾 🌈 @WintRebecca Welcome from me and @Ruth_Hawley very excited to be here #OTalk |
![]() | Ruth Hawley @Ruth_Hawley So, #OTalk Q1. Do you have any experiences of working with people who are homeless? |
![]() | Tara Watts @thelibrarianOT @GeorgiaVineOT @OOFRAS Check out @OTalk_ #OTalk as well. 😊 |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Top Tip: it’s probably not possible to follow every tweet & conversation thread in the chat. So focus on the ones that are most relevant to you - you can catch up later. There will also be a transcript! #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Remember it’s pronounced O Talk not OT Talk - if you’re still struggling here is @OT_rach Niece with the correct pronunciation. #OTalk https://t.co/7nGeTBMYeh |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Welcome #otalk |

![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Welcome #otalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Welcome #otalk |
![]() | Sherlyn 🤔⭐️(she/her) @sherlynmelody Hi 👋🏾 I’m here #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT Hello folks! #otalk https://t.co/KQ2RkLMCd3 |
![]() | Beck Skelton OT 🐾 🌈 @WintRebecca Interested to hear from all you #OTalk (ers). I’m based @CryptLeeds a charity which supports people who are homeless & am proud to be their 1st and only #occupationaltherapist |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Welcome bill #otalk |
![]() | Marcus Dean @MarcusD88167580 #OTalk really excited for this one. Start a placement in a related area next week. |
![]() | Ruth Hawley @Ruth_Hawley I have not had a specific role working with people who are homeless as an OT but I volunteer with a temporary Nightshelter that operates over the winter months and also in my local foodbank and drop in that some homeless people will attend. #OTalk |
![]() | Beck Skelton OT 🐾 🌈 @WintRebecca Love that @KellyASOT trained @OTLeeds and it’s thanks to them that 2 students Matt & Anna who did a role emerging placement in 2016 that my post in #homelessness came about #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Handing over to @Ruth_Hawley and @WintRebecca for the first question #otalk . https://t.co/qCh5j5bHES |
![]() | sian burgess 💙💚 @mrsmcinburtott @Ruth_Hawley I’m here but it’s not a subject I know lots about - hoping to learn something #OTalk |
![]() | Ruth Hawley @Ruth_Hawley Additionally, in my previous clinical role in EIP team there were occasions when someone I was working with was homeless so even when it was not the main focus of my role it would be part of it at times. #OTalk |
![]() | Sherlyn 🤔⭐️(she/her) @sherlynmelody @Ruth_Hawley #OTalk Q1. My final placement (2014) was at #kidscompany, I was liaising with parents who were deemed homeless, some where staying with their children in b&b’s they were given giftcards, clothes, food, legal support etc. |
![]() | Beck Skelton OT 🐾 🌈 @WintRebecca Brilliant you are involved and spreading the word of #OccupationalTherapy & #homelessness in Derby @Ruth_Hawley #OTalk |
![]() | Hannah Spencer (they/them) @hspenceruk @WintRebecca @Ruth_Hawley Looking forward to an hour of learning (probably lurking learning) with you both. Keen to learn more around OT's work with those experiencing #homelessness - relevant to many areas of practice as well as specifically #OTalk. |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ @therapy2optimum don’t forget that hashtag in every tweet! #otalk |
![]() | 🇺🇦🏳️🌈Georgia Vine @GeorgiaVineOT @OTalk_ @OT_rach Hola #OTalk |
![]() | Rachel OT @_rachelOT @Ruth_Hawley I work as a care co-ordinator in a CMHT and often work with people who are homeless (living in hostels, sofa surfing, moving on from street homelessness). I also have lived experience of being homeless #otalk |
![]() | Kate Tudor @OT_KateT @Ruth_Hawley I was about to say no because I'm not in a role targeted for homeless people and don't usually see rough sleepers. Then realised loads of people I work with are homeless at some point! D'oh #OTalk |
![]() | Beck Skelton OT 🐾 🌈 @WintRebecca #homelessness can you effect people across the lifespan I admire the work you & #kidscompany have done and continue to do. The oldest person I’ve supported was 84 |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Welcome #otalk |
![]() | Sherlyn 🤔⭐️(she/her) @sherlynmelody @WintRebecca @CryptLeeds #otalk That’s great, i hope to learn a lot from this tonight. Your input will be awesome. |
![]() | Ruth Hawley @Ruth_Hawley @sherlynmelody That sounds fascinating. Was there an existing #OT role already there or was it a #RoleEmergingPlacement? #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @Ruth_Hawley In my setting, 5-10% of patients I work with were homeless before their acute care hospital stays. #otalk |
![]() | Catherine McNulty (pronouns she/her) @cathymc9781 @OTalk_ what does that mean pin it! #Otalk |
![]() | Miranda CunninghamOT @miranda_jane123 Hi all, I have experience supervising lots of OT students in a homeless shelter and doing research related to occupation #OTalk |
![]() | KellyOT @KellyASOT @Ruth_Hawley I work in the @PathwayUK homeless team in a London Hospital as an OT, but we work generically too! #OTalk |
![]() | SueH.(ret'd-ish)🏊♀️🚶♀️🇺🇦🇪🇺 @Sue_T2O @OTalk_ Arghhh! #OTalk done it again! |
![]() | sian burgess 💙💚 @mrsmcinburtott @_rachelOT @Ruth_Hawley I’m interested in how you keep in contact with this group. I had experience of working with people in the travelers community and it was tricky to keep in contact #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ RT @Ruth_Hawley: I have not had a specific role working with people who are homeless as an OT but I volunteer with a temporary Nightshelter that operates over the winter months and also in my local foodbank and drop in that some homeless people will attend. #OTalk |
![]() | OT_Expert♥️ @OT_Expert Hi #OTalk, I'll be lurking :) |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @cathymc9781 @OTalk_ each profile allows you to pin a tweet. #otalk |
![]() | OT_Expert♥️ @OT_Expert RT @WintRebecca: Brilliant you are involved and spreading the word of #OccupationalTherapy & #homelessness in Derby @Ruth_Hawley #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Question 1 #otalk |
![]() | OT_Expert♥️ @OT_Expert RT @Ruth_Hawley: I have not had a specific role working with people who are homeless as an OT but I volunteer with a temporary Nightshelter that operates over the winter months and also in my local foodbank and drop in that some homeless people will attend. #OTalk |
![]() | Ruth Hawley @Ruth_Hawley @hspenceruk @WintRebecca Always feel free to join in too 😉 I always intended to lurk on my first experiences of #OTalk but then ended up joining in. |
![]() | Abi @Abi21643842 @Ruth_Hawley I had a role emerging placement in homeless at uni, it was fascinating to see the diverse role of OT and disruption in occupational needs. #OTalk |
![]() | Beck Skelton OT 🐾 🌈 @WintRebecca We meet many people receiving support from both physical and #mentalhealth services who are homeless around Leeds - all health has such a big impact on ability to manage in housing |
![]() | OT_Expert♥️ @OT_Expert RT @Ruth_Hawley: Additionally, in my previous clinical role in EIP team there were occasions when someone I was working with was homeless so even when it was not the main focus of my role it would be part of it at times. #OTalk |
![]() | OT_Expert♥️ @OT_Expert RT @Ruth_Hawley: So, #OTalk Q1. Do you have any experiences of working with people who are homeless? |
![]() | Beck Skelton OT 🐾 🌈 @WintRebecca @BillWongOT @cathymc9781 @OTalk_ All technical advice welcome @BillWongOT #OTalk |
![]() | OT_Expert♥️ @OT_Expert RT @OT_KateT: @Ruth_Hawley I was about to say no because I'm not in a role targeted for homeless people and don't usually see rough sleepers. Then realised loads of people I work with are homeless at some point! D'oh #OTalk |
![]() | sian burgess 💙💚 @mrsmcinburtott @miranda_jane123 Do you place all levels of students in these settings Miranda or maybe just final year students? #OTalk |
![]() | SueH.(ret'd-ish)🏊♀️🚶♀️🇺🇦🇪🇺 @Sue_T2O @Ruth_Hawley Just beginning #volunteering in a day centre for #homeless & #vulnerable people, as I #retire from NHS. #OTalk |
![]() | Student Platform OT @SPOTeurope @Ruth_Hawley We are here! #otalk |
![]() | Rachel OT @_rachelOT @mrsmcinburtott @Ruth_Hawley That sounds great! Definitely a population with little focus. As far as I'm aware we don't work with people who are street homeless for this reason. For people moving between hostels I keep in regular phone contact to stay updated, this can mean a lot of chasing! #otalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Welcome |
![]() | Margaret Spencer MA @margaretOT360 I have supervised #occupationaltherapy students a few times on role emerging placements #otalk in homeless projects around #Sheffieldissuper |
![]() | Catherine McNulty (pronouns she/her) @cathymc9781 @OTalk_ @OT_rach Hello #OTalk .. |
![]() | Ruth Hawley @Ruth_Hawley @therapy2optimum @WintRebecca @OTalk_ As a volunteer I’m always conscious about not stepping outside of my volunteer role too which has been a learning transition for me. What does your volunteering role with the #homeless involve? #OTalk |
![]() | Dr Lynne Goodacre 💙 @LynneGoodacre I volunteer 1 day a week at a foodbank and am also a Trustee so as has been mentioned quite a large proportion of our clients are homeless #OTalk |
![]() | Miranda CunninghamOT @miranda_jane123 @Ruth_Hawley I had a similar experience in adult mental health #OTalk |
![]() | Louise @Louisepenny87 @Ruth_Hawley In the acute stroke and neuro / trauma settings I worked in we often had people admitted who were homeless, became homeless during their admission, or the concept of Home was a very fragile or fluid thing. #otalk |
![]() | Beck Skelton OT 🐾 🌈 @WintRebecca Brilliant work you are doing @KellyASOT and so good to see you @theRCOT for the first ever #OT in homelessness networking event. It can be a lonely area to work in but that day made me feel more connected to likeminded OTs #OTalk |
![]() | sian burgess 💙💚 @mrsmcinburtott @_rachelOT @Ruth_Hawley That’s interesting I hadn’t thought of that difference in the population - thanks #OTalk |
![]() | Sherlyn 🤔⭐️(she/her) @sherlynmelody @Ruth_Hawley #otalk there were OT’s there, but they were working with the children. As student we only did OT with the children once a week. This was looking at OT and play. It was a role emerging placement. It was interesting and very holistic. |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT In my setting is a little different, these homeless folks will have a roof over their head while they are receiving physical rehabilitation. Social workers are supposed to find their discharge destinations. #otalk |
![]() | Beck Skelton OT 🐾 🌈 @WintRebecca Did you visit the person at a hostel/ centre or on the streets? #OTalk |
![]() | Ruth Hawley @Ruth_Hawley @margaretOT360 Excellent. I too want to support and facilitate role emerging placements for #OT students in #homeless services. Your thoughts on how best to progress this and support this role emerging area will be most welcome during tonight’s #OTalk |
![]() | Louise @Louisepenny87 @Ruth_Hawley Also have 2.5 years of experience being considered as having no fixed abode myself and yet owning my own (unconventional) home. Unconventional living situations are in the increase #otalk |
![]() | Kate Tudor @OT_KateT @mrsmcinburtott @_rachelOT @Ruth_Hawley I probably see similar people and it can be really tough, especially because they also often have trouble charging mobiles or change mobile numbers a lot. It can also mean a decrease in how proactive care can be and leads to more responding to crisis situations #OTalk |
![]() | Margaret Spencer MA @margaretOT360 RT @WintRebecca: Brilliant work you are doing @KellyASOT and so good to see you @theRCOT for the first ever #OT in homelessness networking event. It can be a lonely area to work in but that day made me feel more connected to likeminded OTs #OTalk |
![]() | Beck Skelton OT 🐾 🌈 @WintRebecca You are doing great work already by the sounds of it, hope you feel the value of OT is recognised #OTalk |
![]() | mukti mani @KtBergson @KellyASOT @Ruth_Hawley @PathwayUK amazing @pathwaysUK were amazingly helpful when I was doing research on #homelessness and #Health #otalk |
![]() | sian burgess 💙💚 @mrsmcinburtott @Louisepenny87 @Ruth_Hawley I’d not thought of the fact for some people it’s about the concept or fragility of the home. Thanks for the thought Louise #OTalk |
![]() | SueH.(ret'd-ish)🏊♀️🚶♀️🇺🇦🇪🇺 @Sue_T2O @Ruth_Hawley @WintRebecca @OTalk_ #OTalk. I've been asked by manager what I can offer: signposting to statutory services, information, baseline functional ax, info/education for staff, understanding medical info.. etc Not sure if this is the way to go? |
![]() | Miranda CunninghamOT @miranda_jane123 @WintRebecca Mostly hostels #OTalk |
![]() | Dr Lynne Goodacre 💙 @LynneGoodacre Forgot... I also did a research project exploring the impact of a dental service set up to work with homeless people/rough sleepers. #OTalk |
![]() | Rachel OT @_rachelOT @OT_KateT @mrsmcinburtott @Ruth_Hawley For sure! And a lot of opportunistic contact! #otalk |
![]() | Beck Skelton OT 🐾 🌈 @WintRebecca I feel like all we can do is Try try and try again. Link with local places you know people go eg soup kitchens, GPS, housing offices and keep turning up to look for and make contact no matter how long it takes 😊 #OTalk |
![]() | Ruth Hawley @Ruth_Hawley @_rachelOT @mrsmcinburtott Yes. Can be tricky to maintain contact, particularly when people don’t always have phones/ lose them/ change them. #OTalk |
![]() | ☯︎ R͜͡a͜͡c͜͡h͜͡e͜͡l͜͡ ☯︎︎ @RachelOTstudent @Ruth_Hawley #OTalk Hello I'm here :) |
![]() | Margaret Spencer MA @margaretOT360 We have had #occupationaltherapy students @archerproject for over 10years. #otalk works really well. |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Welcome #otalk |
![]() | Beck Skelton OT 🐾 🌈 @WintRebecca Time for Q2 What do you think are the occupational needs of people who are homeless? #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ RT @margaretOT360: We have had #occupationaltherapy students @archerproject for over 10years. #otalk works really well. |
![]() | Student Platform OT @SPOTeurope Agreed - some hostels are also only open during the night so people are lost during the day. A community that is a little bit over looked unfortunately we feel 😞 #otalk |
![]() | sian burgess 💙💚 @mrsmcinburtott @WintRebecca Is that challenging to justify in terms of time resources to whoever commissions/manages the service? #OTalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Question 2 #otalk |
![]() | Margaret Spencer MA @margaretOT360 All of the above I think, it’s challenging to deliver groups unless they are open #otalk |
![]() | Abi @Abi21643842 @_rachelOT @Ruth_Hawley I don't think we can ignore the link between poor mental health and homeless. Recovering thing is that people often get missed at society focused on my on meeting those basic needs of safety and survival #OTalk |
![]() | Kirsten Pepper @Kirstenpepper @OTalk_ @OT_rach Hello. Lurking tonight x #otalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Welcome #otalk |
![]() | Ruth Hawley @Ruth_Hawley @miranda_jane123 @WintRebecca I’ve been chatting with some of the #homeless people I know in local hostels recently and thinking there must be a large potential for an #OT role in this context. How did your experiences/ this role come about? #OTalk |
![]() | Student Platform OT @SPOTeurope We love this approach #otalk |
![]() | Sherlyn 🤔⭐️(she/her) @sherlynmelody @WintRebecca #OTalk Q2. I think this depends on the cause of the homelessness? If they had financial problems do they need support with #vocationalrehab #lifeskills Drug/alcohol issues |
![]() | Beck Skelton OT 🐾 🌈 @WintRebecca Sometimes we have to forget the rules, and fight hard to justify what is going to get the best outcomes for those we are supporting - I love the challenge especially if it means bending a few ‘rules’ #OTalk |
![]() | Miranda CunninghamOT @miranda_jane123 @Ruth_Hawley @margaretOT360 Our placements would not have happened without the support of a certain volunteer worker at the hostel @LyndseyWithers Also having 2 students together is very valuable #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @WintRebecca it's quite a difference to my setting in the USA. I think if I were a homeless person living in my setting, I will be glad to take free food 3 meals a day with room and board. #otalk |
![]() | Catherine McNulty (pronouns she/her) @cathymc9781 @OTalk_ #OTalk I don't have any paid work experiences ... there are homeless people living in the city of Lincoln near where I live and when I travel about anywhere, I do what I can buy the Big Issue. spend time & talk with people on the streets when able to |
![]() | Rachel OT @_rachelOT @WintRebecca The same as anyone else really, except trying to achieve them with a serious lack of resources and constant instability #otalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ #otalk the easiest way to remember the # in every single tweet is to start every single tweet with the hashtag! https://t.co/ezZuwLBmXX |
![]() | Student Platform OT @SPOTeurope We love this approach too - sometimes it is a lack of information so people don't know what services there are out there! #otalk |
![]() | Ruth Hawley @Ruth_Hawley @Abi21643842 What did you do during the placement Abi? #OTalk |
![]() | sian burgess 💙💚 @mrsmcinburtott @WintRebecca I agree :) #OTalk |
![]() | Margaret Spencer MA @margaretOT360 Connnecting and feeling a belonging outside of the street. Sometimes providing an alternative to drugs #otalk |
![]() | Catherine McNulty (pronouns she/her) @cathymc9781 @OTalk_ #OTalk have helped out as volunteer making breakfast .. |
![]() | Abi @Abi21643842 @Ruth_Hawley @margaretOT360 I think that Discussions between researchers, academics and policy makers are needed to facilitate the process #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @OKOTA1967 I am talking about SNF's, actually. It's a British based OT talk. So, that is why I said to the audience that my experiences with the homeless are different. #otalk |
![]() | Margaret Spencer MA @margaretOT360 RT @Abi21643842: @_rachelOT @Ruth_Hawley I don't think we can ignore the link between poor mental health and homeless. Recovering thing is that people often get missed at society focused on my on meeting those basic needs of safety and survival #OTalk |
![]() | Louise @Louisepenny87 @Ruth_Hawley I once did a community access session with someone living in illegals squatters accommodation. He was constantly on the look out for good locations to live in! #otalk |
![]() | SueH.(ret'd-ish)🏊♀️🚶♀️🇺🇦🇪🇺 @Sue_T2O @margaretOT360 #OTalk I'm not sure group-work would fit with the transitory nature of attendees. |
![]() | Ruth Hawley @Ruth_Hawley @miranda_jane123 @margaretOT360 @LyndseyWithers Definitely. Peer support during role emerging placements is important #OTalk |
![]() | Beck Skelton OT 🐾 🌈 @WintRebecca I agree. Often we need to begin by meeting the persons priorities, initially this might even be dry socks to enable them to walk to the next food handout in town. Each step leads to better occupational opportunities - listening is key |
![]() | mukti mani @KtBergson @margaretOT360 I looked at support workers & OT roles when I was studying. maybe this helps? #otalk https://t.co/WzIPVewA1e |
![]() | Miranda CunninghamOT @miranda_jane123 @Ruth_Hawley @WintRebecca Through developing partnerships, having very positive people inside the hostel environment and very capable students #OTalk |
![]() | Ruth Hawley @Ruth_Hawley @VanessajpOT Have you found the roles different between the 2 services Vanessa? #OTalk |
![]() | Beck Skelton OT 🐾 🌈 @WintRebecca Definitely agree, how many times do you hear people say they’re lonely? It saddens me every time #OTalk |
![]() | Margaret Spencer MA @margaretOT360 Dec important to have two students together. I also think giving students choice is vital #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @WintRebecca I think self care should be paramount. Since there are some that are working homeless, hygiene & grooming, toileting, and bathing will be extremely important. They need to look good for work the next day. #otalk |
![]() | Dr Lynne Goodacre 💙 @LynneGoodacre Often really complex so start with what is important for each person. #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @WintRebecca and sometimes an overlooked one- they also need to connect to the world, too! So, some homeless folks will stay at Internet Cafe's so that they can use Internet and email. #otalk |
![]() | Louise @Louisepenny87 @WintRebecca Same as everyone else, it’s just the challenges and opportunities will differ. Any kind of ‘life admin’ is much more difficult and often has to be done in person rather than electronically / over phone etc #otalk |
![]() | Margaret Spencer MA @margaretOT360 RT @Abi21643842: @Ruth_Hawley @margaretOT360 I think that Discussions between researchers, academics and policy makers are needed to facilitate the process #OTalk |
![]() | Abi @Abi21643842 @mrsmcinburtott @_rachelOT @Ruth_Hawley I guess hostels and job centre or local shelter spots in the community #OTalk |
![]() | Beck Skelton OT 🐾 🌈 @WintRebecca You are much better at the terminology than me 😊 people are certainly deprived of so many Occupational opportunities & often aren’t sure what’s important to them other than surviving the moment - #OccupationalTherapy seems to enrich lives #OTalk |
![]() | Ruth Hawley @Ruth_Hawley Thanks @KtBergson. This looks a really helpful resource when considering the #OT role working with those who are #homeless #OTalk |
![]() | Beck Skelton OT 🐾 🌈 @WintRebecca @miranda_jane123 @Ruth_Hawley Building those brilliant working relationships makes such a difference, it’s not what you know it’s who you know #OTalk |
![]() | Aoife Molamphy @AMolamphs RT @lee_o_nee: @WintRebecca @Ruth_Hawley Am really sorry I not free to join #OTalk this evening.. would have loved to take part but look forward to reading the transcript - especially all the thoughts about how we can develop this really important area of practice for #OT. Good luck with it. @AMolamphs @miranda_jane123 |
![]() | Margaret Spencer MA @margaretOT360 It has to be an open group, closed groups won’t work. However we have found if we deliver the right group people willl find a way to attend each week. That has happened with a drumming group and fantasy football #otalk |
![]() | Margaret Spencer MA @margaretOT360 RT @Ruth_Hawley: @miranda_jane123 @margaretOT360 @LyndseyWithers Definitely. Peer support during role emerging placements is important #OTalk |
![]() | Abi @Abi21643842 @SPOTeurope With permission, street pastors may be helpful #OTalk |
![]() | Beck Skelton OT 🐾 🌈 @WintRebecca I’d challenge this in some ways - I find many people I support are more focussed & interested in self care when they have a reason to eg occupations like visiting a cafe, shopping, attending a group they love like walking motivated the self care #OTalk |
![]() | Susan Griffiths @SusanGriffiths5 @WintRebecca So many, but if they are living on the streets, safety has to be a priority. Survival skills and personal care skills are up there as well - where can they sleep, what public toilets can they use, where can they go to have a wash, where can they get food, etc. #OTalk |
![]() | Ruth Hawley @Ruth_Hawley @WintRebecca From my experiences, this can be very varied and broad as each person is an individual even when they are having shared experiences. This will change what their occupational needs are and we should never assume we know what these will be without asking that individual #OTalk |
![]() | Sherlyn 🤔⭐️(she/her) @sherlynmelody RT @KtBergson: @margaretOT360 I looked at support workers & OT roles when I was studying. maybe this helps? #otalk https://t.co/WzIPVewA1e |
![]() | Margaret Spencer MA @margaretOT360 #otalk Great info really useful for many #OTs |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT Here's a group I think we should look at for today's talk. They are McRefugees, as they are people who sleep overnight at McDonald's in Hong Kong. https://t.co/p53nMEjrxw #otalk |
![]() | Louise @Louisepenny87 @WintRebecca Organisations need to remove barriers to easy communication. Allowing staff to communicate via what’s app etc can really increase comms between service and service users #otalk |
![]() | Abi @Abi21643842 @OTalk_ A lot of my work focused on developing motivation for change by exploring goals. However I felt the need for more professionals with a range of skills to involve themselves to support this population #OTalk |
![]() | Margaret Spencer MA @margaretOT360 Heartbreaking #otalk |
![]() | Beck Skelton OT 🐾 🌈 @WintRebecca The most important questions: what is important to you, what are your dreams, describe your perfect/ dream day, if you could do anything what would it be #OTalk |
![]() | Miranda CunninghamOT @miranda_jane123 @WintRebecca Needs are as varied as the people who experience homelessness #OTalk |
![]() | SueH.(ret'd-ish)🏊♀️🚶♀️🇺🇦🇪🇺 @Sue_T2O @WintRebecca #OTalk ChurchesTogether run day centre, supported living units & bed weather night shelter. Recent innovation is a 'medical/social care outreach' team. I'm just beginning! |
![]() | Ruth Hawley @Ruth_Hawley @WintRebecca Common themes I’ve seen from my volunteering are limited occupational choices being available to people so people experience boredom & reduced occ. identity alongside having to spend most of their time in occupations of survival so little capacity for other occupations. #OTalk |
![]() | Margaret Spencer MA @margaretOT360 RT @WintRebecca: You are much better at the terminology than me 😊 people are certainly deprived of so many Occupational opportunities & often aren’t sure what’s important to them other than surviving the moment - #OccupationalTherapy seems to enrich lives #OTalk |
![]() | Susan Windeatt @mooartdotcom #OTalk I think sometimes it gets missed that they are the same as everyone else's holistic occupational needs. They're people needing safe shelter, washing, eating, financial security but also relationships, societal roles, love & independent agency in decisions etc. |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ Don’t forget that hashtag @paulaspencer #otalk |
![]() | Ruth Hawley @Ruth_Hawley @WintRebecca Equally occupations of personal care/ PADL can be difficult to maintain in circumstances where these resources are not always easily available to people and when motivation to complete them can at times be reduced. #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @WintRebecca Work is technically an occupation, too! That was why I said "working homeless". #otalk |
![]() | Beck Skelton OT 🐾 🌈 @WintRebecca It is so difficult the number of referrals I make to be told ‘we can’t support them whilst they’re homeless’ gets me everytime. Also difficult if you don’t have a phone / internet/ skills around these issues things #OTalk |
![]() | Kirsten Pepper @Kirstenpepper #OTalk I also think locality plays an important part. We have a lot of end of the line homeless in Cornwall, people following the energy Pauline's, massive poverty and drug habits usually from the feelings of hopelessness. ![]() | Susan Griffiths @SusanGriffiths5 @mrsmcinburtott @KtBergson @OTalk_ @pathwaysuk @crisis_uk Such a shame. Perhaps this is something universities could look at - maybe running sessions for OTs looking at role emerging placements, how they can provide support even if it not directly within their own employment areas and what the benefits are for the OTs #OTalk |
![]() | Ruth Hawley @Ruth_Hawley Well that certainly felt busy! Phone, computer and fingers on fire, maybe I’ll get better at this with more practice. Thanks so much to everyone for participating in this #OTalk. I’m going to enjoy reviewing the transcript and the tweets. |
![]() | Hannah Spencer (they/them) @hspenceruk @mrsmcinburtott @OTNorthumbria Sounds similar to current MSc pre-reg 2nd year discussions with @teresa_rushton @Ann1ot too #OTalk drivers through service development and OT Process through to evaluation... |
![]() | Beck Skelton OT 🐾 🌈 @WintRebecca Over and out from me and Martin who is totally unimpressed with the lack of attention I’ve given him tonight during #OTalk lovely to hear from so many OTs with great experience & ideas. Good night 🐈 🌒 https://t.co/E3Odj1IWq4 |

![]() | Sherlyn 🤔⭐️(she/her) @sherlynmelody #OTalk I remember seeing a man called Jasper from Bristol and converting storage containers for the homeless, I thought this was awesome @HBHomeless maybe not a long term fix but its a start, right? |
![]() | Margaret Spencer MA @margaretOT360 Mostly as ever to do with funding. Independent #OTs can’t afford to do it. NHS OTs don’t feel confident and often can’t get released from work to do the supervision. |
![]() | KellyOT @KellyASOT @Ruth_Hawley Absolutely! It's a huge transition for some people too, whether they've been rough sleeping, safeguarding concerns, changes to their health/relationship breakdowns etc, to start all over again in a new area, often being 'off the grid' in society too can be very daunting!#OTalk |
![]() | Student Platform OT @SPOTeurope @OTalk_ Thank you! #otalk |

![]() | Santer Hill 💙 @santerhill @Ruth_Hawley I work on an adult male acute mental health ward and a large amount of our patient population are facing homelessness #OTalk |
![]() | Ruth Hawley @Ruth_Hawley @cathymc9781 @OTalk_ I agree. We should never lose sight of people being individuals. Knowing someone’s name and what their own hopes and dreams for the future are what genuine connection is about #OTalk |
![]() | Hannah Spencer (they/them) @hspenceruk @Ruth_Hawley That hour went super fast. My brain is busy - yours and @WintRebecca 's must be even more so! Look forward to revisiting when the #OTalk transcript is up. Thank you both and well done both on your maiden hosting voyages (I think!)! |
![]() | Barbara Ann Smith @Babsyslapsy @Ruth_Hawley #OTalk. I treated some homeless patients in an acute respiratory setting. It was about their wants and needs. Support in medicine management( some inhalers weren’t good in the damp), nutrition and recognising when they need to seek help |
![]() | mukti mani @KtBergson @tibblepowell @ClaireSkingley @WintRebecca @crisis_uk Can't always change some inhumane things like that in our culture but I suppose I can change the choices, attitudes and behaviours I make - trying to create spaces and openings where other places close doors. #otalk |
![]() | RCOT Neuro Practice @RCOT_NP @JenniferNCrow @EmPlayfair @Louisepenny87 a date for the diary |
![]() | Ruth Hawley @Ruth_Hawley @hspenceruk @WintRebecca You’re right. First #OTalk hosting for both of us. I’d definitely recommend it to others. Hosting one had been a goal for a while and now it’s done 😊 |
![]() | KellyOT @KellyASOT @WintRebecca I find so many people don't know where to go for help, or what help is out there, and when they do manage to access it, without an advocate; sadly, often they don't get the support they need anyway, and they end up 'losing faith in our system'... #OTalk |
![]() | Susan Griffiths @SusanGriffiths5 @KtBergson @mrsmcinburtott @OTalk_ @pathwaysuk @crisis_uk That’s true. Putting homeless population to one side, I wonder if there are other opportunities related to your employment area where new role emerging placement can be developed where you would be more likely to be supported and released to provide supervision #OTalk. |
![]() | KellyOT @KellyASOT @WintRebecca If our eligibility criteria was clearer, easier to self-advocate for and better still: not necessary (I'm thinking about priority need here: well done Scotland!), then the most vulnerable people wouldn't have to rely on services to help them navigate our systems #OTalk |
![]() | Ruth Hawley @Ruth_Hawley @KtBergson @SusanGriffiths5 @mrsmcinburtott @OTalk_ @pathwaysuk @crisis_uk Great point. I think as placements continue to develop there will be a greater role to consider long arm supervision not just in #homeless services but in other role emerging areas. Having existing #OTs as long arm supervisors to support this will be essential. #OTalk |
![]() | Ruth Hawley @Ruth_Hawley @therapy2optimum @OTalk_ Thanks for your contributions to this #OTalk Sue. I hope you found it useful and all the best in your #volunteer role with the #homeless. |
![]() | KellyOT @KellyASOT @WintRebecca For all of these systems, the skills and interventions needed are vitally an OTs remit: people need access to computers, phones, transport, to be able to communicate efficiently, organise documents, manage a routine, attend busy, chaotic housing depts... #OTrole, #OTalk |
![]() | Ruth Hawley @Ruth_Hawley @howell_lucy @OT_Expert @WintRebecca @OT_rach @OTalk_ @Shelter Never mind. If you’re around to catch up now remember that your tweets would still be added to the #OTalk transcript |
![]() | Ruth Hawley @Ruth_Hawley @WardChrisi884 @EmmaJonesOT True. Often people may be focused on occupations of survival from necessity but opportunities to do other occupations would be so valuable #OTalk |
![]() | OTNorthumbria @OTNorthumbria one to follow and join in for MSc pre-reg people for relevance to #OT0706 |
![]() | Dr Kat Sanders @AnatomyKat RT @StephBusby8: @Ruth_Hawley #otalk This is a really interesting question. think it depends on the setting. In Acute settings a lot of it is safe discharge and ensuring we work with people to see any changes in chronic conditions to provent further admission. |
![]() | Dr Kat Sanders @AnatomyKat RT @StephBusby8: @WintRebecca #otalk I think we need more research, and more guidance from NICE as to the best plans and pathways. We need a more robust system which includes OT as a core member of the MDT working with the person. We are so unique in our practice we are well suited to cover all bases! |
![]() | Ruth Hawley @Ruth_Hawley @tibblepowell @Abi21643842 @BillWongOT @WintRebecca Good point. People may be wanting, ready and willing for different elements of support irrespective of if their basic needs are met #OTalk |
![]() | Dr Channine Clarke @channineclarke @Ruth_Hawley @WintRebecca Hi there - don’t forget there is the national conference and website to support OT in diverse settings, OTs have shared their experiences of working with the homeless there. Next date weds 9th sept! 😄 #Otalk |
![]() | Rowena Padamsey @RowenaPadamsey It’s in the diary! @NUHStrokeOTs |
![]() | KellyOT @KellyASOT @KtBergson @Ruth_Hawley @PathwayUK @pathwaysuk It is such a fascinating area, sounds great @KtBergson, I'm learning constantly, it's a great area for any profession to work in, but so much variety and scope to use all your skills as an OT! #OTalk |
![]() | Student Platform OT @SPOTeurope Such a great tool regarding roles! Thank you! #otalk |

![]() | Ruth Hawley @Ruth_Hawley @channineclarke @WintRebecca Great point. I went to #diverseroles19 in Leeds which was fab but couldn’t make it to the Sept one at Brighton. Your website re communities of practice is part of what inspired my idea for a possible community of practice for this. Have you got a link for the event? #OTalk |
![]() | Miranda CunninghamOT @miranda_jane123 @tibblepowell @WintRebecca I agree, Housing First is an evidence based and humane solution #otalk |
![]() | Hannah Spencer (they/them) @hspenceruk @Ruth_Hawley @tibblepowell @Abi21643842 @BillWongOT @WintRebecca And maybe support with some of that higher up the Maslow's hierarchy stuff (connection, belonging, self efficacy etc) is what drives towards a place of seeing worth in tackling those (assumed) basic needs? Whole person... #OTalk |

![]() | Ruth Hawley @Ruth_Hawley @WintRebecca @nhsleeds I think that’s true that often third sector organisations working with the #homeless can be faith based. My voluntary role at #DerbyNightShelter is ran by @DCMchief which is faith based. #OTalk |

![]() | Ruth Hawley @Ruth_Hawley @KtBergson @BillWongOT @margaretOT360 Thanks for this resource @KtBergson. I wonder if the emphasis on CMHT during tonight's #OTalk was because more OT's are familiar with this area than homeless hostel/charity settings. Hopefully in the future this will change. #homeless people can be in every setting, not just MH |
![]() | Ruth Hawley @Ruth_Hawley @OT_KateT Very true, we don't need to be in a specialist role in a #homelessness service for us to be working with people who are #homeless. #OTalk |
