![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT #otalk hello folks! |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] For me, primarily will be conferences- we have twice a year from US state associations and annually with AOTA. #otalk |
![]() | Ellie Dixon @EllieDixon_OT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ [REDACTED USER] I agree! I've found it difficult to know what to access as part of my CPD but the #OTalk discussions and the SHOUT talks have been really useful! |
![]() | Meg @MegB95 I have been to an incredible amount of CPD events thanks to [REDACTED USER] (My favourites being [REDACTED USER] with [REDACTED USER] and Community Mental health with @RamsellEleanor). I was also able to attend a conference on Cerebal palsy and a lecture with [REDACTED USER] #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] I particularly like the AOTA/NBCOT student conclave. Being a conference exclusively for students nationally in the USA was a huge benefit... and of course, I still keep in touch with some of the attendees today. #otalk |
![]() | Ellie Dixon @EllieDixon_OT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ [REDACTED USER] I'll try looking on Twitter! I agree with you about OT news, that's been a really great resource for me too! #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] @anyadei [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] haha... I know the USA equivalent will be ASD'ers. (ASD in this context will be Assembly of Student Delegates in AOTA). #otalk |
![]() | Ellie Dixon @EllieDixon_OT [REDACTED USER] It would be really useful to have a resource like that, although I did find the AOTA guidelines to be useful. #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] If I were a student today, I will also add TEDCircles to the list. It's an amazing opportunity to meet strangers across the globe. It's basically a live media club with TED or TEDx talk. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] I should do an inservice to them about TEDCircles. #otalk |
![]() | Ellie Dixon @EllieDixon_OT @Laura_Does [REDACTED USER] Yes I'm sure I do! I'll have a look and sent it over to you! #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] and this is a common thing when you are on the other side being qualified too. Many are focusing on their careers first before thinking about getting involved in the profession later. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] I will also say- my exposure to conferences early on was what made me a conference junkie now. I feel sad that I won't attend anything live any time soon! #otalk |
![]() | #OTalk @OTalk_ [REDACTED USER] @EllieDixon_OT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Definitely! It's most certainly a CPD activity #Otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @debbieduckie [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] The student days are good times in practicing digging deep to participate in OT activities we SHOULD participate. I know I am an example of that now- by still getting involved in the TED community. Getting involved in that realm is extremely intense! #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] I have participated in 5 and hosted 1 already. So, I know the inside and out about this pretty much... this is one of the times that OT is on time with a relatively new community trend... lol! #otalk |
![]() | Ellie Dixon @EllieDixon_OT [REDACTED USER] With placements and other commitments, it can be quite difficult to fit other CPD opportunities in. I suppose it's about finding the right opportunities for you. For me, discussions like #OTalk are great and easy to fit in! |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @EllieDixon_OT [REDACTED USER] I definitely understand. I think I am showing you guys how it can be done! I am working full time (though in quarantine now because of COVID-19), actively involve in AOTA, and also actively involve in TED community on top of that. I know I make many people's heads spin! #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @anyadei [REDACTED USER] @Laura_Does [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ [REDACTED USER] I have a different to-do list. It is a CPD goals checklist, as well as a separate bucket list. Though the goals checklist items can also appear on the bucket list, too! #otalk |
![]() | Ellie Dixon @EllieDixon_OT @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] Definitely! I suppose that it's a good lesson in occupational balance! #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] I tried one this month and I got supportive feedback. It can be a fun multidisciplinary mingle opportunity... as if there is a big group, you can always use breakout rooms to make sure everyone has a chance to participate in intimate conversation. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @EllieDixon_OT [REDACTED USER] Well- I have crossed over to the dark side... haha! Many people in the TEDx curating community are constantly having occupational balance issues! #otalk |
![]() | Ellie Dixon @EllieDixon_OT @Laura_Does @anyadei [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ [REDACTED USER] That's a good idea - I often need a while to process the event and think before I can start a written reflection! But I agree about not leaving it too long otherwise it can all be a bit hazy! #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] the theme for this month is "life at its fullest". So, I picked a TEDx talk that I think would fit the theme, prepared discussion questions, and then facilitated. That took me 1-2 hours to prepare, and then 1-2 hours for the actual event. #otalk |
![]() | Ellie Dixon @EllieDixon_OT [REDACTED USER] That's true, sometimes I forget how much we are learning and taking in! #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] @anyadei [REDACTED USER] @Laura_Does [REDACTED USER] @OTalk_ [REDACTED USER] Yes- for example, in 2017, I crossed off the "OT conference slam" from my bucket list. What I mean by that is- attending AOTA, RCOT, CAOT, and OT Australia conference at least once. Another example- in 2015, I spoke at a TEDx event. That got crossed off as well. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] I second that. My first year felt like a blur! I only attend conferences per recommendation from my instructors. I did not know as many people in OT as I have now. #otalk |
![]() | Ellie Dixon @EllieDixon_OT @Laura_Does [REDACTED USER] Definitely! That's so relevant at the moment with many people working from home and trying to balance lots of different aspects of life! #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Yup- mine is an extreme example, but in a good way! Who knew I am a multidimensional networker. I sure did not envision that back in my first year! #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] No- so how it works is this. The facilitator will pick the pre-existing TED or TEDx talk for the TEDCircle event. Best practice for online is- you should not tell your participants what you will show them, but you can prepare discussion questions before hand. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] Absolutely! Although it's crazy that our most expensive conferences are actually cheap relatively to TED ones for its organizers. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] and I think this pandemic sort of brings up this about conferences- do I want to pay for these now so that I can have experiences under my belt, or defer to my qualified days so that I can afford them later? #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] Right now, because I am a member of the TEDx curating community, so I have connections to people who are running them. But, you can always sign up to be a host on https://t.co/E3vGilljH8. There is an orientation for new hosts so that you know what you are supposed to do. #otalk |
![]() | Ellie Dixon @EllieDixon_OT [REDACTED USER] I've found it difficult to know how to evidence CPD, what we've learnt and how it's made a difference to practice, does it always need to be through written reflection? Something that I find difficult but I am trying to work on! #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] @Laura_Does [REDACTED USER] Yes- my uni does the same thing too. People would have to apply for scholarships to attend them. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] It feels a little bit like an exclusive club for now, because they haven't have a system on how the public can join these things. I know TED will work on this eventually. But, it's fun because I got to participate ones from China, Tunisia, and Poland. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] @Laura_Does [REDACTED USER] and I think it is important for prospective students to research that about the programs they are interested in. Some schools are bound by attendance policies... as students can only miss certain number of days per term. #otalk |
![]() | Ellie Dixon @EllieDixon_OT [REDACTED USER] Thankyou! Great ideas! #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] yeah- and with the Tunisia group, they are planning to show my first TEDx talk as their TEDCircles content next month. They already invited me to join... as very rarely these circles will have the experience of meet and share thoughts with the original presenter. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] connect with current students and qualified professionals will be great idea to get head start. #otalk |
![]() | Ellie Dixon @EllieDixon_OT @Laura_Does [REDACTED USER] I'll have to start branching out and trying some other models! #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] and also approach qualified OT's online with respect and professionalism. Get to know them to see if they can give you advices that can further your career when you are qualified. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] For sure, sometimes connections in OT can last a LONG time. You might be working alongside your heroes in certain OT projects down the line. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @Laura_Does @anyadei [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] and also discussion forums too. For example, the AOTA group I am in- Community of Leaders. We launched an asynchronous media club on leadership topics last month. Joining those discussions are also important. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] I see that during my time serving in AOTA Representative Assembly. Although I did not seek re-election last year, it was a great experience to work alongside peers I respect and admire. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] For example, some people in OT who don't know me well might think I am more of a social media manager than an OT. But deep inside, I know I got a lot to offer to students and new grads in particular. #otalk |
![]() | Ellie Dixon @EllieDixon_OT [REDACTED USER] Definitely! I've felt more confident to engage with and look for more CPD opportunities now that I've begun to get involved with #OTalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT [REDACTED USER] In the USA, I took on 2 new grads for @OTDiversity's Minority Mentorship program. Aside from our monthly check-in's, I added service learning component for both mentees, as they will work along side me in AOTA's Community of Leaders group. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @Laura_Does [REDACTED USER] and don't be afraid to go international! I admit I stumbled into UK OT community by accident... as I got connected to an autistic OT practitioner from the UK 9 years ago! That sort of led to a whole host of international connections since! #otalk |
![]() | Ellie Dixon @EllieDixon_OT [REDACTED USER] Thank you so much [REDACTED USER]! This #OTalk has been really insightful! |
@mrsmcinburtott Well done team [REDACTED USER] hosting #OTalk tonight. I’ve lurked (didn’t want to cramp your style) https://t.co/Bvmj7yAQ1k | |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @debbieduckie [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @rcot and don't forget if you have access to instructors who have global reach, take advantage! I started locally, but began to think globally about 8 years ago when [REDACTED USER] became my doctoral project advisor for my OTD in the USA. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @Laura_Does @Rachel_SOT [REDACTED USER] next week, TED will actually start a new podcast called TEDShorts. I think you will be interested in that too! #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @debbieduckie [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @rcot I know my students generally had this reaction when they realized I am a faculty, "This guy does a lot of international work. I don't know how he does it even though he is practicing for less than 10 years!" #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @Rachel_SOT @Laura_Does [REDACTED USER] It's also one of the times where OT is on top of new trends. I found this out a few days ago when I received an email from TED to its present and former organizers... lol! #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @Laura_Does @Rachel_SOT [REDACTED USER] Actually, that's not the spotlight. When I told the TED community that I got positive for COVID-19, the support globally was amazing! I even got an email from TED/TEDx Community team saying that they are proud of me being a member of the TED community. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @Laura_Does @Rachel_SOT [REDACTED USER] and right now, I am signing up to be involved in the planning team for an online TEDxSalon event in Poland in 7 weeks. It will be an event made up of entirely musical performances and the organizing team consists of present and former TEDx organizers. #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @Laura_Does @Rachel_SOT [REDACTED USER] I know many people in OT land will be like, "Bill! How can be involved in such a global project outside of OT, especially given that what you do in OT should keep you occupied already?" #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @Rachel_SOT @Laura_Does [REDACTED USER] I know my late mentor will faint had I told her this if she is still alive today. She will be like, "Bill... what you are doing is making my dreams look small! You are inspiring me to up my game!" #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @Laura_Does @Rachel_SOT [REDACTED USER] I think I am setting a very high bar for whoever is coming after me in OT to get involved in the TEDx curating world. The person who will take the baton from me got to be a juggernaut! #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @Laura_Does @Rachel_SOT [REDACTED USER] I bet whoever wants to follow my footsteps in this will ask me, "What is life like on that side?" I will just say, "Well... be prepared for constant episodes of occupational imbalance. Doing this will feel like you are working in a high-stress part time job for free." #otalk |
![]() | Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @Laura_Does @Rachel_SOT [REDACTED USER] That's why I am not taking the lead any more whenever I am involved in that front. I rather play the role of a good sidekick/role player. That said, a role player in that realm is STILL a lot of work. #otalk |
![]() | Ellie Dixon @EllieDixon_OT @Laura_Does [REDACTED USER] Thanks for these Laura! They're really great ideas, I've got lots to explore! #OTalk |
![]() | Ellie Dixon @EllieDixon_OT Thanks [REDACTED USER] for a really useful #OTalk about CPD! Here's some guidance around CPD ideas that I've found really helpful, I hope others will find it just as useful! https://t.co/gEQb3x5PKJ |
