[REDACTED USER] Good evening #physiotalk . Tea is almost drunk, and fingers are limbered. Looking forward to some creative discussions around R&R!
KB @KBNeuroinfo
#physiotalk hi from Wales
@_JoeMiddleton
[REDACTED USER] No supply, particularly at band 5 and 6 levels. New grads are mostly securing jobs in the new year/spring, meaning that posts can remain vacant for months, and months, and months. #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@_JoeMiddleton [REDACTED USER] We struggled with B6 earlier this year as well. #physiotalk
@_JoeMiddleton
@JanetThomas47 [REDACTED USER] Been scraping through by the skin of our teeth for band 6s. About to have 75% of band 5 posts vacant, and 2 (maybe 3) unsuccessful attempts at recruiting #physiotalk
@_JoeMiddleton
[REDACTED USER] Very few applicants. Most are automatically rejected by NHS Jobs/staff services. They 1 or 2 that are left have not been meeting the standards expected. #physiotalk
@_JoeMiddleton
[REDACTED USER] We do shortlist, but applicants who do not have the necessary legal stuff to work here are automatically screened out (at least I assume that is what is happening!) #physiotalk
@_JoeMiddleton
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Our retention is generally excellent. Band 5s will either stay with us as band 6s, or will move on after 2+ years. Currently we seem to have no hope of recruiting until Spring, and then have to wait for the final year student to qualify in the summer! #physiotalk
@_JoeMiddleton
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] I can understand this, but it is very bad practice. The governance implications are huge. #physiotalk
@_JoeMiddleton
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] When I qualified (2005), it was a 'buyers' market, and competition for jobs was fierce. many of the people I trained with never got jobs, and had to move on to different careers. Complete reverse now. New grads hold the power!!! #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
I think most of our grads have got jobs as well - but equally I don't know of Band 5 posts being unfilled in my area either #Physiotalk
@_JoeMiddleton
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Yes, exactly. #physiotalk
@_JoeMiddleton
[REDACTED USER] Band 7 vacancies come up less often, so there is usually a ready supply of people ready and waiting to step up. That being said, I am aware of some lager trusts (esp. in London) who have really struggled to recruit to band 7/8a posts. #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
[REDACTED USER] @_JoeMiddleton [REDACTED USER] Ahem - we don't all have Hunt as our health secretary! #Physiotalk
Emily Stowe @stowe_emily
[REDACTED USER] Very few applicants for jobs in a specialist field outside the NHS (hospice setting) #physiotalk
KB @KBNeuroinfo
#physiotalk Gap at Band 6 level, limited resource
@_JoeMiddleton
[REDACTED USER] But yeah, not enough grads. The growth in physiotherapy as a profession (including the ever growing diversity of career paths) has increased demand, and supply it too far behind (and not responding quick enough) #physiotalk
@_JoeMiddleton
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Of course, but the if they do meet the criteria, they will likely have the pick of who they want to work for. Trusts are having to sell (and incentivise) working for them so much more than a decade ago #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @_JoeMiddleton [REDACTED USER] Not in my experience either #physiotalk
@_JoeMiddleton
[REDACTED USER] Indeed. [REDACTED USER] had to go to Dubai to get staff! #physiotalk
@_JoeMiddleton
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] I do believe it was. I'm told that Ireland has a surplus of physios, so we are considering exploring that as a potential supply #physiotalk
KB @KBNeuroinfo
Lots of varying opportunities within and outside traditional NHS available once experienced for Band 6s, they hold the power #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@_JoeMiddleton [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] We already have a few Irish physios but they tend to have qualified in Scotland in the first place #Physiotalk
@_JoeMiddleton
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] By which time, existing posts will have been downgraded to B4 or just cut, as they were vacant for so long, and services have 'coped'; so there will be grads who can't get jobs! #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @_JoeMiddleton [REDACTED USER] It didn't seem to be like this in the past though? When I qualified in the mid 80s seemed pretty equal supply and demand #Physiotalk
@_JoeMiddleton
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Yes. Potentially. #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] @_JoeMiddleton [REDACTED USER] although very different times as most would leave to start family (aka me!) although I have now of course returned to practice! #Physiotalk
@_JoeMiddleton
[REDACTED USER] No. We tried supporting someone who was RtP, but were not overly confident in the [REDACTED USER] 's requirements and guidance #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
[REDACTED USER] I returned to practice pre HCPC (and I had still done the odd on calls actually so not strictly a RTP) I was offered a job, went in on a Monday and started.... #Physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
[REDACTED USER] I do realise it would be different now - and no bad thing! #Physiotalk
@_JoeMiddleton
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] I would argue that the vague and relatively limited requirements that [REDACTED USER] put on people returning to practice, makes it difficult to meet the standards required for many jobs #physiotalk
@_JoeMiddleton
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Exactly. I doubt many people embarked on careers as physiotherapists, with the end goal being management! *obviously there are many exceptional managers who also physios #physiotalk
@_JoeMiddleton
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Could have done with knowing about you and HEE's RTP support a couple of years ago!!! #physiotalk
KB @KBNeuroinfo
@_JoeMiddleton [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Also need to consider the diversity of roles at Band 7 #physiotalk
@_JoeMiddleton
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Agree. However, when the bright-eyed and bushy-tailed Naomi started her first day as a qualified physiotherapist, did she have her sights set on a management role? (please say no, else you will ruin my point!!!) #physiotalk
Pam Watkins💙 @PWtherapist
[REDACTED USER] @_JoeMiddleton @JanetThomas47 #physiotalk also having difficulty recruiting to posts . Band 5 Posts on constant re advert . Majority of CVs very poor when you do get any.
@_JoeMiddleton
[REDACTED USER] Well thankfully our EU physios can stay post-Brexit. Ongoing challenges will continue to be mismatch in supply:demand, and the NHS becoming a less and less attractive option #physiotalk
@_JoeMiddleton
[REDACTED USER] The NHS got a lot of mileage out of being the standard, expected career path for new physiotherapists. Not any more. #physiotalk
@_JoeMiddleton
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Okay, well... there is obviously always exceptions!!! #physiotalk
@_JoeMiddleton
[REDACTED USER] Workforce planning. Based on good science and data. Everything is predictable with enough data. #physiotalk
@_JoeMiddleton
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Enforced National (Health) Service. Seriously though, I just don't know that if it can anymore.... :( #physiotalk
