[REDACTED USER] Hello! It’s my first #PhysioTalk . Physio from US.
ɹǝʇlnoԀ pıʌɐᗡ 🚴🏻 🇺🇸 🇦🇺 🇬🇧 @Retlouping
[REDACTED USER] Watching from chilly Minnesota USA #physiotalk
ɹǝʇlnoԀ pıʌɐᗡ 🚴🏻 🇺🇸 🇦🇺 🇬🇧 @Retlouping
[REDACTED USER] The biggest obstacle I faced (having already volunteered abroad in Niger) is the financial aspect of paying your own way. For some it is a big ask. #physiotalk
kate 💜 @kate_mattick
@Larita_gc [REDACTED USER] how did you begin your search for the volunteer opportunity? #physiotalk
Fabio @fabietlosabe
[REDACTED USER] In terms of volunteering, lack of opportunities and existing structures to share knowledge/skills in an organised way. #physiotalk
Claire McIvor @clairemcivor4
[REDACTED USER] Definitely help in my opinion! I've been supported with a career break from my trust at [REDACTED USER] to volunteer in Madagascar from next week for 3 months and feel that the skills I bring back from this will benefit my future career prospects immeasurably #physiotalk
Maral Shahi,PT, DPT @Maralhasanshahi
[REDACTED USER] Yes! I believe so. There is a paper that beautifully explains how it does. I am going to share the title in my next tweet. #PhysioTalk
kate 💜 @kate_mattick
@Larita_gc [REDACTED USER] It is overwhelming for sure! trying to narrow down the experience you are after can help. Consider the length of time / specialist area / country / language skills. [REDACTED USER] have a buddy system to speak to people who have volunteered / worked internationally #physiotalk
Fabio @fabietlosabe
@Maralhasanshahi [REDACTED USER] I have actively tried to find projects in need of PTs with neuro/paediatric background for collaborations of less than a month and I haven’t been very successful.. #physiotalk
Maral Shahi,PT, DPT @Maralhasanshahi
[REDACTED USER] Promoting and Assesing Cultural Competence, Professional Identity, and Advocacy in DPT Degree students within a Community of Practice. #physiotalk
Maral Shahi,PT, DPT @Maralhasanshahi
@fabietlosabe [REDACTED USER] Hope you find out a way in this #PhysioTalk!
Claire McIvor @clairemcivor4
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Very true! Always a bonus to come back knowing your job is secure #physiotalk
kate 💜 @kate_mattick
[REDACTED USER] For personal and professional development I think it is undeniably helpful. Its how you frame it to future employers when back home. of course its not without its challenges but can't help feel we have a global responsibility to share skills and learn from others #physiotalk
Maral Shahi,PT, DPT @Maralhasanshahi
[REDACTED USER] @fabietlosabe [REDACTED USER] @Maits_Charity Awsome! Thank you. #Physiotalk
Fabio @fabietlosabe
[REDACTED USER] I had a brief experience in India in 2014 and it was very possitive from both perspectives. I think it could be potentially beneficial for your career in the UK althought maybe not for climbing up the ladder. Maybe the same in Spain althought the system is different #physiotalk
kate 💜 @kate_mattick
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] absolutely! I think its important for shaping the profession as a whole. There are many countries where physiotherapy is not recognised as a profession. The @WCPT have interesting statistics on countries physio profiles #physiotalk
Maral Shahi,PT, DPT @Maralhasanshahi
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] We had a Cultural Competency module as a part of a course in @Duke_DPT , which was eye-opening. This paper is a part of the readings. #PhysioTalk
kate 💜 @kate_mattick
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] languages are an asset to international work #physiotalk
Claire McIvor @clairemcivor4
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Thank you! #physiotalk
kate 💜 @kate_mattick
[REDACTED USER] Do you think general broad experience or specialist skills? #Physiotalk
Fabio @fabietlosabe
[REDACTED USER] MDT, service planning and teaching/education maily in neurology and pediatrics. In terms of hands on rehabilitation, I spend half of my week in a hydro pool doing neurorehab🐳 #physiotalk
kate 💜 @kate_mattick
@SamuelOgunkoya [REDACTED USER] They are certainly options! We have a global ageing population and strokes care can be very limited. In many countries there is no follow up or input at all. #Physiotalk
kate 💜 @kate_mattick
[REDACTED USER] #physiotalk supporting the professionals already working within that country, skill sharing and developing rehab pathways
Fabio @fabietlosabe
@clairemcivor92 [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] And it is easier to learn at third one once you have a second 😉 #physiotalk
Claire McIvor @clairemcivor4
Completely agree [REDACTED USER]! #physiotalk
kate 💜 @kate_mattick
[REDACTED USER] It makes it challenging but it also demonstrates to the organisation you are approaching your commitment. Many established organisations offering paid employment have this as a requirement - work is competitive and hard. Its the same with other health professionals #physiotalk
kate 💜 @kate_mattick
[REDACTED USER] If the work is voluntary it is less likely an organisation will expect you to have previous experience in my experience #physiotalk
Fabio @fabietlosabe
@Larita_gc [REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] I can see the point in needing “experienced” professionals to respond inmediately to emergencies but it is also true that at some point you start to earn that exp. True also that the younger the less likely to have other commitments and more able to move overseas #physiotalk
kate 💜 @kate_mattick
[REDACTED USER] This could be the international experience we spoke about in the previous question. If you do the placement it could open up new opportunities, one may lead to the other #physiotalk
Claire McIvor @clairemcivor4
[REDACTED USER] @kate_mattick [REDACTED USER] I think it's always important to listen to what the local staff request help with and then continually think about how you're leaving skills using the 'train the trainer model'. #physiotalk
Fabio @fabietlosabe
[REDACTED USER] @Larita_gc [REDACTED USER] Good point #physiotalk
kate 💜 @kate_mattick
@carolinewrighty [REDACTED USER] There are definity plenty of great experiences in the UK but if your priority is to work or travel abroad in the future then it can open up new opportunity #physiotalk
Fabio @fabietlosabe
[REDACTED USER] I would be very interested in getting to know the ethics and the mission behind this companies, are they after placing people where ther is need or is there any other interest behind? I have not heard of this before #physiotalk
Claire McIvor @clairemcivor4
[REDACTED USER] I chose not to go with a larger organisation during my month in Tanzania as a student, and have organised my work this year independently too. Both have risks vs benefits but I think the skills learned from finding your own placements are really useful and fun too! #physiotalk
kate 💜 @kate_mattick
[REDACTED USER] An important factor to consider is the ethics of the organisation - where is your money being spent, are the interventions and projects sustainable, how will they support you to be effective and learn #physiotalk
kate 💜 @kate_mattick
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Thank you for raising the topic! #physiotalk
Claire McIvor @clairemcivor4
Thank you [REDACTED USER] and [REDACTED USER] for such an interesting talk on getting started in working and volunteering abroad! Makes me even more excited to start working in Madagascar in just 1 week! 😁 #physiotalk
Fabio @fabietlosabe
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Thanks for this folks, very useful and thought-provoking! Good to read everybody’s points and views #physiotalk
