Woop, nice group here this evening! Are there any first timers out there? And any lurkers, feel free to get involved at any stage! 😊 #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Alright, let’s get going with some questions #physiotalk
Helen Harte @Hartey_PT
@physiotalk we're a friendly bunch :) #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Q1: What’s stopping you from working or volunteering abroad? #physiotalk
Helen Harte @Hartey_PT
@physiotalk family, mortgage, too old?? #physiotalk
Jessie Robinson @physiojessie
Q1 from @ADAPT_CSP #physiotalk
ADAPT @ADAPT_CSP
RT @physiotalk: Q1: What’s stopping you from working or volunteering abroad? #physiotalk
Luke Stevens @LukeStevens_93
RT @physiotalk: Q1: What’s stopping you from working or volunteering abroad? #physiotalk
Louise Brennan @Louise_Brennan_
@physiotalk Louise here, from Dublin, will be chipping in while also working the tweets for @physiotalk account tonight with @Hartey_PT #physiotalk
Lara | physio in UK @Larita_gc
@physiotalk Nothing as already doing so hehe... but in terms of volunteering I have had only one experience, and although very nice, I was overwhelmed when searching for opportunities as many where too expensive or massive lack of professional structure #physiotalk
Francesca Rawlings @physiofrancesca
@physiotalk It’s not stopping me personally as I’m happy here in the UK. However, I have heard it’s difficult/expensive to get registered in Australia #physiotalk
Ian Tyrrell @IanTyrrell5
@physiotalk Got a job in New Zealand when I first qualified, then got over whelmed with the portfolio stuff. Was enough hassle to get accredited in Ireland back then being a uk trained irish physio. #physiotalk
Maria Galve Villa @tweetmariag
@physiotalk I have moved countries twice since my undergrad. The hardest and most imp step is getting the degree recognized (even within EU). Closely followed by language and the relocation expenses! #physiotalk
🚴🏻‍♂️ ɹǝʇlnoԀ pıʌɐᗡ 🚴🏻‍♂️ 𝕓𝕖 𝕜𝕚𝕟𝕕 😊 @Retlouping
@physiotalk The biggest obstacle I faced (having already volunteered abroad in Niger) is the financial aspect of paying your own way. For some it is a big ask. #physiotalk
kate @kate_mattick
@Larita_gc @physiotalk how did you begin your search for the volunteer opportunity? #physiotalk
Becca Pickford @becca_pickford
@physiotalk Not looking as such to work abroad as love my job here as well as other commitments such as house etc however my fears would be finding somewhere that recognised my degree and for places such as Australia the extra cost needed to practice over there #physiotalk
Maria Galve Villa @tweetmariag
@physiotalk Considered relocation to Australia but paperwork is nearly impossible (I depend on my university) and don't take into account experience, my masters nor the phd! #physiotalk
Lara | physio in UK @Larita_gc
@tweetmariag @physiotalk Agree with this! Registration process abroad is sooo hard and expensive as well! #physiotalk
BookingHawk.com @BookingHawk
@physiotalk hi guys. Hello from Ireland. have a great night! #physiotalk
Daniel Gerber @DanNotOsteopath
@Retlouping @physiotalk A1 one of my colleagues crowd funded. Not sure what it was for, but it allowed her to volunteer and give her time abroad... #physiotalk
Ellena @ellena_farrow
@physiotalk Fear of managing the distance from family and friends. Working far from home but in the same country is doable, moving country is a huge extra step. #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
#physiotalk
Wolvesburg 'til I die @jordanawale
@physiotalk Finances, potential home opportunities, and not knowing where to go to or start #physiotalk
Fabiet Lo Sabe @fabietlosabe
@physiotalk In terms of volunteering, lack of opportunities and existing structures to share knowledge/skills in an organised way. #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@aliceharvey8 @Hartey_PT dont forget that hashtag! #physiotalk
Maria Galve Villa @tweetmariag
@Hartey_PT @physiotalk We have 2 kids too. Yes, they take priority (language, school). But still young enough (them) to give it a go... no mortgage... #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
#physiotalk
Lara | physio in UK @Larita_gc
@kate_mattick @physiotalk google! tried searching physio specific ones but the ones I found where really really expensive... :( At the time I wasn't CSP registered, now I think that could have been a good place to start... #physiotalk

let's move on to the next question - some of you are touching on it already.. #physiotalk
Mari @mariand84
@physiotalk Expenses, registration process seem very difficult. Doesn´t seem easy to validate your degree even within EU. #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@jordanawale @physiojessie dont forget to hastag! #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Q2: Do you thinking volunteering or working abroad will help or hinder your career prospects in your home country? #physiotalk
Ian Tyrrell @IanTyrrell5
@kate_mattick @physiotalk It is a bit of a regret, but I was young and naive back in 2007! Also let my irish membership slide when I came back to the uk! #physiotalk

Lara | physio in UK @Larita_gc
@physiotalk Yet to find out... so far I think is helping in giving me a different perspective and new ideas to work on back home. I am currently involved in some projects to share this experience, so seems to be heading towards the a positive outcome #physiotalk
Mide @Deegoke
RT @physiotalk: So, who is joining us tonight? Say hello and let us know where you’re tweeting from! #physiotalk
Maria Galve Villa @tweetmariag
@physiotalk Personally, no. Professionally it might! #physiotalk
Louise Brennan @Louise_Brennan_
@physiotalk I think my volunteering experiences did help - helped me to be more resourceful and keep perspective. Not sure if my future employers cared, but that never bothered me! #physiotalk 😆
alice harvey @aliceharvey8
@Hartey_PT @physiotalk I think the more established you are in life (family / career at home / trappings of stability!) - the more intimidating a move abroad , or even a short term trip becomes. #physiotalk
Maria Galve Villa @tweetmariag
@Larita_gc @physiotalk If you are not working in the public sector within the EU, returning to the public sector innSpain will be v hard. You will have "less points" #physiotalk
Mari @mariand84
@physiotalk I think it can help career prospects. It shows that you are eager on taking on new challenges and flexible. Good trades. I definitely do not think it will hinder career prospects. #physiotalk
Claire McIvor @clairemcivor92
@physiotalk Definitely help in my opinion! I've been supported with a career break from my trust at @LTHTPhysio to volunteer in Madagascar from next week for 3 months and feel that the skills I bring back from this will benefit my future career prospects immeasurably #physiotalk
Dr. Noor J 🇵🇰 @NoorulainJ15
@physiotalk Hey! Hi #physiotalk
Rachel Krantz @RachelKrantzPT
@physiotalk When I qualify in December, I am dreading the possibility of having to return to the USA, as it’s my dream to spend a few years living and working abroad. I hope politics, visas, etc. don’t get in the way when the time comes! 😬 #physiotalk
Ellena @ellena_farrow
@physiotalk Can’t see how it would be anything but helpful. We can develop NHS Trusts though ideas brought from new employees from other Trusts so gaining ideas from those who have worked abroad can only help improve us further. It’s good for the Trusts and for the individuals #physiotalk
Becca Pickford @becca_pickford
@physiotalk I think it could be helpful from a service development perspective to see how other countries work and change their services Also gaining other ideas for treatment plans and sessions with patients that you might not have thought of in day to day NHS practice #physiotalk
Maral Hassanshahi @Maralhasanshahi
@physiotalk Yes! I believe so. There is a paper that beautifully explains how it does. I am going to share the title in my next tweet. #PhysioTalk
Louise Brennan @Louise_Brennan_
@clairemcivor92 @physiotalk @LTHTPhysio That sounds wonderful Claire! What kind of work will you be doing? #physiotalk
Francesca Rawlings @physiofrancesca
@Louise_Brennan_ @physiotalk Not sure my volunteering experience abroad whilst I was a student hindered or helped but it sure did make me feel lucky to have #NHS as the hospital I went to was very basic. #physiotalk
Ozymandias @SamuelOgunkoya
@physiotalk I think it would do some help, albeit minor #physiotalk
Luke Stevens @LukeStevens_93
@physiotalk I am totally for 'helping' I spent 3 month on Sri Lanka working as a physio. The skills I developed, particularly communication, resourcefulness, and learning how to work effectively in different cultural environments helps me so much with my NHS job #physiotalk.
kate @kate_mattick
@Larita_gc @physiotalk It is overwhelming for sure! trying to narrow down the experience you are after can help. Consider the length of time / specialist area / country / language skills. @ADAPT_CSP have a buddy system to speak to people who have volunteered / worked internationally #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
#physiotalk
Maria Galve Villa @tweetmariag
@physiotalk It's very expensive to keep up with all the registrations in each country when you don't get benefit out of it (you are working abroad) and then you have to start from scratch... for when a unified SINGLE EU registration fee? #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@physiojessie @tweetmariag Dont forget that Hashtag! #physiotalk
Louise Brennan @Louise_Brennan_
@physiofrancesca @physiotalk I'm totally in agreement with you re feeling grateful for the NHS!! #physiotalk
Luke Stevens @LukeStevens_93
@Louise_Brennan_ @clairemcivor92 @physiotalk @LTHTPhysio It's awesome to be able to get granted a career break, although this doesn't help the financial side it gives you some security of having a job once you have had your time away! Wish more Trusts were on board #physiotalk
Lara | physio in UK @Larita_gc
@tweetmariag @physiotalk I know, but the projects are exactly to progress/change some of those aspects at a general level, not for me personally. #physiotalk #hope :)
Ian Tyrrell @IanTyrrell5
@physiotalk I can only think it would help. Career breaks are important in staff retention but if you’re going to volunteer abroad I can’t see it being anything other than good on a cv. Unless a manager is afraid they’ll lose you and clip wings. But then I’d want a new manager. #physiotalk

Caryl Hunter @CarylAPhysio
@physiojessie @tweetmariag @physiotalk Playing Devils' advocate - in the current climate with some much travel could you argue that depending on your placement/rotational experiences you hopefully have been exposed to many different cultures. In reality I do agree with you @physiojessie #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Q3: Thinking of volunteering & international development - where do you think you could be most useful? In what sector or setting? #physiotalk
kate @kate_mattick
@physiotalk For personal and professional development I think it is undeniably helpful. Its how you frame it to future employers when back home. of course its not without its challenges but can't help feel we have a global responsibility to share skills and learn from others #physiotalk

@physiofrancesca @physiotalk Not had one do it over here, but I often think back to that placement in a random country hospital and how well I was supported both by the uni and the hospital. Was always an idea I liked but there are not many lecturers practicing in my area of expertise #physiotalk

@physiotalk it is difficult to get your first international experience. In uni it was quite expensive to go on exchange periods in other countries and there were only a few places. I think the organisations are missing out having this demand #physiotalk
Helen Harte @Hartey_PT
@physiotalk swings and roundabouts. They are of course missing out on a huge amount of clinical experience and knowledge, but there are distinct advantages to having experience of international work, surely. #physiotalk

alice harvey @aliceharvey8
@tweetmariag @physiotalk Exactly. Some may say a young persons game! But it is so important that people volunteering overseas, particularly if they haven’t got close professional support, have got the skills and humility to support in a sustainable way, but most importantly not do any harm. #physiotalk
Helen Harte @Hartey_PT
@physiotalk Didn't even know that was a thing! #physiotalk Its a "No" from me. I already get grumpy about having to pay to work (HCPC fees)
Fabiet Lo Sabe @fabietlosabe
@Larita_gc @tweetmariag @physiotalk I can see the point in needing “experienced” professionals to respond inmediately to emergencies but it is also true that at some point you start to earn that exp. @physiotalk I think so. It can be daunting to go off on an international experience, especially if you’re on your own. These companies look after you, help you settle in, find your way and make friends for life. It provides local jobs too. I think mine was worth every penny #physiotalk

@physiotalk I don’t think 2 weeks is long enough for a volunteering placement. However, it may help you get a small insight into how a different health system works or broaden your knowledge of conditions less common in the NHS. #physiotalk
Maria Galve Villa @tweetmariag
@carolinewrighty @physiotalk Not unless you have lots of money! Two weeks will only give you stress and nice pictures 😉. To professionally improve... relocate!! #physiotalk
kate @kate_mattick
@carolinewrighty @physiotalk There are definity plenty of great experiences in the UK but if your priority is to work or travel abroad in the future then it can open up new opportunity #physiotalk
Qifayah Adedotun @_caphie
@physiotalk I considered this choice while scouting for a place for my clinical internship. In the end I concluded it wasn't cost effective to spend all that money (which is really huge when converted to Nigerian Naira ) on a two weeks placement #physiotalk
Louise Brennan @Louise_Brennan_
@physiotalk From all I've seen, these projects often take work away from local staff, and/or else offer very little actual experience (aside from observational). Better to build up cv at home & continue to seek the right opportunity abroad #physiotalk
Jessie Robinson @physiojessie
@physiotalk I think so! I think it is particularly important as your first international experience, as you always have support while your out there. I think having that support is invaluable and sets you up perfectly to do it independently thereafter! #physiotalk
Ozymandias @SamuelOgunkoya
@physiotalk Now, we should consider finances is even one major obstruction for volunteering, so I am not sure how this works. #physiotalk
Helen Harte @Hartey_PT
@clairemcivor92 @bendotellis @kate_mattick @physiotalk yes, need to future proof these interventions #physiotalk
Becca Pickford @becca_pickford
@physiotalk I think you could gain a lot from it especially linked the the previous questions - international experience. However can also see the flip side of the financial cost and you have to weigh up how much you will gain from it and is it worth it? #physiotalk
Caroline Slater @CarolinePhysio1
@physiotalk Agree they’re great opportunities here too but international experiences challenge you in a completely different way. Language, heat, under resourced, lack of autonomy and many more. #YOLO #physiotalk

Jessie Robinson @physiojessie
@physiotalk I don't think you can ever gain those skills and experiences you get when abroad otherwise as you have to think completely outside of the box! It can be a steep learning curve but will stay with you for ever #physiotalk
Luke Stevens @LukeStevens_93
@physiotalk I find this quite tricky, I only know this from a student perspective and found it very useful. However, I think the clinical experience would have been better the the UK (being more hands on rather than observational). #physiotalk

Ben Ellis @bendotellis
@physiotalk What are you going for? If it's a placement why pay? Contact a physio working abroad and arrange a placement. If you are volunteering, the question should become what would the place get out of me volunteering for 2 weeks #physiotalk
