Martyn Wyres @MartynWyres
@physiotalk Teaching the ‘core’ physio areas of msk, neuro, resp Anatomy knowledge #physiotalk
Jon Warren @JonWarrenNZ
@ekstokes A1. Graduating smart, compassionate, physiotherapists who initially are very excited about what the profession has to offer. #physiotalk
Barbara Sanders @BarbSanders
I think we include significant education on how to evaluate a movement disorder, etc. but sometimes fail to be sure that we teach the best evidence based intervention. #physiotalk
Barbara Sanders @BarbSanders
RT @Prof_IeuanEllis: Developing professionals with problem solving and critical thinking skills who are excellent communicators. Lifelong learners able to continue their development. #physiotalk
Ann Green @AnnSusanGreen
I agree but overarching qualities can be identified #physiotalk @JHaleATX @physiotalk
Claire Arditto @ArdittoClaire
Q1 curricula still needs a sound theoretical basis..anatomy, physiology etc then translate into practice #physiotalk
Claire Horner @ClaireSweetman
@Prof_IeuanEllis #physiotalk I would question whether we are actually doing this. That’s a tall ask as a new grad considering everything else you have to learn. I think these are key skills but not teaching/developing them well enough at the moment.
Jon Warren @JonWarrenNZ
@LaurafinucaneB @JeremyLewisPT @physiotalk Are we reactive or proactive in responding to the landscape #physiotalk
Dr. Jackie Whittaker @jwhittak_physio
Good basic fundamental knowledge in anatomy, physiology etc. Understanding of the BPS model , oh and did I say enthusiastic & driven #physiotalk
Laura Finucane @LaurafinucaneB
@ClaireSweetman @Prof_IeuanEllis I think this is what we aspire to do and agree it may not always translate #physiotalk
Eily @eilymcc
@physiotalk @StehartleyPT Ireland had a minimum of 1000 hours when I graduated over a decade ago, I'm sure it hasn't changed. Australia also 1000 hours I believe. #physiotalk
Dr. Jackie Whittaker @jwhittak_physio
@bendotellis @LizHoley I totally agree Ben, there is a difference between thinking and problem solving #physiotalk
Jon Warren @JonWarrenNZ
@ekstokes Mandatory 1000 hours - quality clinical hours is the key. The number should only be a guide. #physiotalk
Laura Finucane @LaurafinucaneB
@JonWarrenNZ @JeremyLewisPT @physiotalk I think it is variable to be honest , locally UoB has embraced SDM #physiotalk
Joe Curtin @JoeCurtinIE
@physiotalk As a recent grad we are active learners and not passive. We apply the skills we develop early on to be able to assess and reason a patient's treatment holistically with a focus on the BPS model. We are competent with creating our own and appraising others research. #physiotalk
gwyn owen @gwyn_owen
@physiotalk current curriculum in the UK (things that are formally part of the programme - not including all the extracurricular/lifewide learning experiences that students also engage in) produces a graduate with capacity 4 autonomous problem-solving person-centred PT practice #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@bendotellis @MartynWyres @physiotalk I have a real problem with 'core' areas at times. Perhaps one for a later question... #physiotalk
Joe Middleton @_JoeMiddleton
@ekstokes @physiotalk I mean programmes that respond to an ever changing health and social care backdrop. e.g. moving to developing greater levels of critical thinking, whilst maybe not so much on skills that are less used in 2019. #physiotalk
Jon Warren @JonWarrenNZ
@ellena_farrow @physiotalk I agree. Unfortunately good clinicians does not = good teachers. #physiotalk

Although the focus of this #PhysioTalk is pre-registration curricula, this cannot be considered in isolation from post-registration education. The main weakness currently is not pre-reg curricula but lack of formalised post-registration and postgraduate education.

At the end of a 5 year medical degree, newly qualified Drs are regarded as 'trainees' with all doing another 10 years education. Yet in physio there is a prevailing assumption that all education will be packed into a 2-4 year 'pre-reg' degree #physiotalk.
Joe Middleton @_JoeMiddleton
@IanTyrrell5 @BarbSanders Does teaching the 'B&W' cause more problems when they are then faced with a 'shades of grey' reality? #physiotalk
Jon Warren @JonWarrenNZ

@JeremyLewisPT @physiotalk Seeing the bigger picture is so key and having an understanding of where and how physio fits in and can influence the wider health agenda #physiotalk
Jennifer Hale @JHaleATX
@jwhittak_physio Yes, we are messy and complex. I think developing practitioners that promote self-management and realize there isn't always a 'fix' for their client -- how do we join them on their journey and empower change #physiotalk
amanda deaves @ADeaves
@MariaLouisaBusu @JeremyLewisPT @physiotalk #physiotalk I don’t disagree but this is potentially a complex area for an undergrad student to get a handle on
Claire Horner @ClaireSweetman
@JoeCurtinIE @physiotalk I really like this emphasis on mental health #PhysioTalk not focussed on enough in my opinion...building resilience is critical. Too many physios and GPs (and FCP will see some physios moving into GP settings) burn-out

RT @jwhittak_physio: @LaurafinucaneB @JeremyLewisPT @MelroseStewart1 @NinaRydOlsen So true Laura. I think sometime students or young career PT's are so worried about failing they paralyze themselves, or worse just head down a path just to have a path. @physiotalk As tough as it may be on clinical educators (or the lack of placement areas), I strongly feel that our students should get longer placements. Our nursing and OT colleagues have 8 & 6 week placements as a MINIMUM, where the physios longest is 6 weeks! #physiotalk
amanda deaves @ADeaves
@MartynWyres @physiotalk #PhysioTalk Agree but there is resistant to change this model Educators report it either works very well or is very difficult to manage for a number of reasons

Nina Rydland Olsen @NinaRydOlsen
RT @LaurafinucaneB: @MelroseStewart1 @NinaRydOlsen but we deal with diagnostic uncertainty everyday and would be good to prepare for that because its not all negative , it depends on how they manage the uncertainty themselves and prepare patients to do so I think #physiotalk

@ekstokes Introduce a greater breadth of clinical content. Obviously, we still need to cover MSK, neuro, and respiratory, but maybe include more focus on mental health or ageing. Avoid covering these areas in isolation - real people don't work like that. #physiotalk

Dr. Jackie Whittaker @jwhittak_physio
Is it really about the length or amount of clinical placement? or is it rather the quality? Is there time to debrief, reflect on what has happened, go and search the literature, and devise other options. Have a good long talk vs. just run off to the next patient? #physiotalk

Q4. Future proof - we need to be aware of the world around us. What are the types of conditions we are going to be treating in the future. What is our role in managing these conditions now, what do we need to be better. How do we as PT add value, be indispensable #PhysioTalk

@jwhittak_physio I don’t feel that I can assess students on whether they’re at the “expected level for registration” (as our closest uni’s paperwork requests) based on 4/6 week placements. In a perfect world clinicians wouldn’t feel the pressure of having to run to the next patient #physiotalk

Need to know, nice to know, nuts to know. Academic bloat is a problem as well as the interpretation of what entry-level training should be. As a profession we haven’t come to a consensus on what it is. We continue to add “nice for students to have more of _________” #physiotalk
