RT @physiotalk: This is your last reminder ahead of tonight's #physiotalk Yep, we'll be starting Tweetchatting in 5 minutes time! https:/…
physiotalk @physiotalk
Hello everyone, and welcome to #physiotalk! Tonight, we’ll be talking about promoting our own positive mental health.
physiotalk @physiotalk
We’re experts in looking after physical health and many of us are fit as fiddles, but how good are we at minding our mental health? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts about this over the next hour! #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
Good evening Lurking in the background of #physiotalk this evening - I'll be the one reminding you all to use your hashtags tonight!

Claire Craig @ClaireCraig_PT
Hello! Claire from Glasgow #physiotalk
Claire Craig @ClaireCraig_PT
@physiotalk Not always as good as we should be. Sadly for many it's not until you have experienced stress that you start to work on your own resilience- we can talk the talk but do we walk the walk? #physiotalk
Louise Brennan @Louise_Brennan_
@physiotalk Louise here from Dublin - I'm tweeting out the questions tonight but looking forward to chipping in on the chat too! #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
A little reminder: please use the #physiotalk hastag in all your tweets – this way, everyone can follow the conversation and we can all hear what you’ve got to say #physiotalk

Q1: Why do you think supporting positive mental health is important in physiotherapy staff? #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@IanTyrrell5 @HelenOwen3 was kind enough to let us have these a while ago! I'll see how many I need to use tonight... #physiotalk
Andrea Selley @Andrea_Selley
Because caring for yourself is the first step in caring for anyone else. #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
RT @physiotalk: Q1: Why do you think supporting positive mental health is important in physiotherapy staff? #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
Its important in all staff of course, but we need to be able to look after our own mental health before / as well as looking after others #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
#physiotalk
Angie Logan @logan_angie
@physiotalk Angie from Cornwall #Physiotalk
Helen Caldwell @caldwell_pt
@physiotalk There are so many challenges we are currently facing at work that if we don’t support positive mental health we potentially risk losing great physios from the profession. We have to look after ourselves and each other #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@ClaireC_PT Just a bit of a hashtag reminder :) #physiotalk
Natalie Patterson @PhysioNatalie
@physiotalk Actually remembered for once! Hello from Portsmouth #physiotalk
Nicola Lauchlan @NicolaLauchlan
@physiotalk Sorry forgot #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
#physiotalk
Ian Tyrrell @IanTyrrell5
@physiotalk I think we need to be more open about how situations make us feel. Opening up is difficult. Working in acute medicine you see sick people and terribly sad stories, it’s important to discuss how this makes you feel to prevent long term effects. #physiotalk
Louise Brennan @Louise_Brennan_
@NicolaLauchlan @physiotalk Good point - the job can be emotionally challenging, and we sometimes take on too much! It's so important to be aware of early signs of stress in ourselves #physiotalk
Fiona Barrett @fiona_b89
@physiotalk Hello! Fiona from Northampton #physiotalk
Claire Campbell @ClaireC_PT
@physiotalk I think physios are taught to be problem solvers and many people’s problems are complex. I look after my MH so I can keep serving others (avoid burn out) and not take my work home. #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@IanTyrrell5 @physiotalk Think this is really important - we can see so much and really don't think about how it might impact us esp in the long term #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Question 2 coming up now.. #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Q2: What are the barriers or challenges to positive mental health in physiotherapy staff? #physiotalk
Ian Tyrrell @IanTyrrell5
@physiotalk I think we also need to break down the stigma around mental health! People think (wrongly) that they will be thought less of for disclosing issues, but actually talking helps, and it can help us support each other. #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
RT @physiotalk: Q2: What are the barriers or challenges to positive mental health in physiotherapy staff? #physiotalk
Angie Logan @logan_angie
@physiotalk If we don’t, there’s a risk it may affect patient care, personal & professional relationships. Care starts with you. Self-care & care of your colleagues helps facilitate resilience. It helps you deal with the challenges of our roles. #physiotalk
Louise Brennan @Louise_Brennan_
@curlssharma @physiotalk Yes, we need to be in a good frame of mind to be able to help the people around us! #physiotalk
Claire Craig @ClaireCraig_PT
@Louise_Brennan_ @NicolaLauchlan @physiotalk I'm not sure that many staff are good at recognising early signs of stress in thrmselves - so it's important that people feel safe to ask others if they are ok #physiotalk
Helen Caldwell @caldwell_pt
@physiotalk I think we sometimes feel like we have to be strong, for our patients, their families, our teams #physiotalk
Natalie Patterson @PhysioNatalie
@physiotalk I feel it so important as often the management put unnecessary pressure on HCP to achieve the unachievable, this on top of being surround by those who aren’t well or coping can cause a very negative environment. #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@IanTyrrell5 @physiotalk Theres a barrier right there! No easy answer as its societal I suspect rather than just in health #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
RT @ClaireCraig_PT: @Louise_Brennan_ @NicolaLauchlan @physiotalk I'm not sure that many staff are good at recognising early signs of stress…
Andrea Selley @Andrea_Selley
@IanTyrrell5 @physiotalk I agree. Many worry about what ohers will think of them for admitting struggle with MH. #physiotalk
Odharnait Lambe @OdharnaitLambe
@physiotalk Odharnait from Dublin. Involved in Staff Wellbeing for the Physio Dept of @Beaumont_Dublin #physiotalk
Fiona Barrett @fiona_b89
@physiotalk The demands of life and mental wellbeing is part and parcel of work life no matter how you try to separate the two. The NHS needs staff that can deal with highly emotional situations, stress, job pressures etc and remain effective and motivated #physiotalk
Claire Craig @ClaireCraig_PT
@physiotalk Being seen as a failure or not coping - but I see opening up about your own mental health as a success #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
RT @PhysioNatalie: @physiotalk I feel it so important as often the management put unnecessary pressure on HCP to achieve the unachievable,…
Angie Logan @logan_angie
@IanTyrrell5 @physiotalk I agree. Our team has regular peer support & supervison. We are currently developing a programme to support the psychological & emotional needs of our whole team. It’s important to maintain our emotional & physical health. That helps us deliver high quality care #physiotalk
Aideen Larmer @AideenPhysio
@IanTyrrell5 @physiotalk I think if it's not acknowledged that these are difficult and sad situations it also risks lowering empathy - if these things just become 'the norm' #physiotalk
Nicola Lauchlan @NicolaLauchlan
@physiotalk Stress, lack of support, the feeling that we have to be all things to all people, stigma which still surrounds mental ill health, lack of understanding of how to help someone with a mental health issue without undermining them #physiotalk
Helen Caldwell @caldwell_pt
@ClaireCraig_PT @physiotalk Opening up about mental health is a strength, but sometimes difficult to see it at the time #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@logan_angie @IanTyrrell5 What sort of programme - that's sounds interesting #physiotalk
Natalie Patterson @PhysioNatalie
@physiotalk Communication and people often expect you to be able to manage all situations. In my first trust we were encouraged to share our uncomfortable situations and learning events to help people to understand not everything goes to plan or is easy #physiotalk
Andrea Selley @Andrea_Selley
@JanetThomas47 @IanTyrrell5 @physiotalk I think wider campaigns like #timetotalk are really important. #physiotalk
Ian Tyrrell @IanTyrrell5
@physiotalk I think it all comes down to stigma. You can’t be a healthcare professional and have a mental health problem! But that is so far wide of the mark! I think admitting you are struggling is hard, but also being open to address mental health as a supervisor isn’t easy! #physiotalk
Claire Craig @ClaireCraig_PT
@physiotalk I think another barrier is that people don't use the resilience- tools that do exist to their own advantage- I have heard too many physios say they are too busy for supervision etc- that's the time we need to support each other #physiotalk
Andrea Selley @Andrea_Selley
@ClaireCraig_PT @physiotalk Me too #physiotalk
Claire Campbell @ClaireC_PT
@physiotalk I think the stereotype of physiotherapists can mean we do not seek or get the same kind of support as other professionals. #physiotalk
Nicola Clague-Baker @ClagueNjc36
RT @physiotalk: Q1: Why do you think supporting positive mental health is important in physiotherapy staff? #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Is it just supervision that's a resilience tool, or are you thinking of other tools as well? #physiotalk
Chris Martey @ChrisMartey
@physiotalk Because it underpins everything. Staff need to feel valued, supported and reassured that their well-being is a priority. Without care for our #MentalHealth, how can we support our patients? #PhysioTalk
Ian Tyrrell @IanTyrrell5
@AideenPhysio @physiotalk Became acutely award of this when I started talking to people about their perceptions of a busy A&E during winter and how it made them feel, not work related but seeing patients in distress. #physiotalk
Laura B @Lauraphysio3
@physiotalk We often care more about our patients than ourselves and actually sometimes we need to take a step back and look after ourselves so we can provide the care we aspire too #physiotalk
Angie Logan @logan_angie
@physiotalk @IanTyrrell5 Work in progress. There are lots of resources available in our Trust but it’s about fostering an environment that encourages us to share consistently. Most resources available are about treating mental illness but we want to prevent mental health problems #physiotalk
Claire Craig @ClaireCraig_PT
@ClaireC_PT @physiotalk What is the stereotype of physiotherapists? #physiotalk I agree- other professions seem to see supervision as essential while we don't always value it. That's changing in Scotland and Glasgow I think but it's still got a long way to go
Fiona Barrett @fiona_b89
@physiotalk I firmly believe that you are responsible for your own happiness. Life will provide numerous barriers and challenges however it’s how we overcome them - what are you actively doing to overcome the barriers? Are you asking for help/support? Communication is paramount #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Really interesting conversations around barriers. Question 3 is on its way.. #physiotalk
Claire Campbell @ClaireC_PT
@IanTyrrell5 @AideenPhysio @physiotalk Empathy fatigue is a major cause of burnout. #physiotalk

physiotalk @physiotalk
Q3: In your opinion, what does a workplace which supports positive mental health look like? What features are key? #physiotalk
Claire Craig @ClaireCraig_PT
@physiotalk #physiotalk there are many but I think bring able talk and reflect is key. We use mindfulness, team debriefs after difficult events, but I also think social time and breaks are important and we dont always take them.
Andrea Selley @Andrea_Selley
I felt so embarrassed by my own struggle that I even convinced myself of my own 'I'm fine' lie. I ended up with a total mental health breakdown. I'm now passionate about being open. #physiotalk

Claire Craig @ClaireCraig_PT
@Andrea_Selley #physiotalk thank you for sharing. Me too - it wasn't until I spent some time off with work related stress that I fully understood the need to find coping strategies. Haven't been off since
Ian Tyrrell @IanTyrrell5
@physiotalk I think it needs to start at the top, need our senior staff to feel comfortable in having conversations about mental health with both staff and patients! We also need access to support to enable us to have these conversations. #physiotalk

physiotalk @physiotalk
@ClaireCraig_PT @Andrea_Selley Good to hear. What advice would you give other Physios to help their mental health? #physiotalk
Natalie Patterson @PhysioNatalie
@physiotalk An open culture to allow staff to discuss thoughts without judgement, regular supervisions & chances to reflect on situations that may have been challenging. Chances to discuss patients with other professionals allowing you to understand how they deal with situations #physiotalk
Fiona Barrett @fiona_b89
@Louise_Brennan_ @physiotalk Absolutely. We were taught mindfulness and CBT as undergrads (the bare bones but enough to get a jist of the concepts). My therapy dept now also had a health and well-being group to promote mental wellbeing and signpost staff to help and to provide ideas as needed #physiotalk
Angie Logan @logan_angie
@IanTyrrell5 @physiotalk Important to lead by example but that doesn’t have to be top down. I appreciate you need an element of support for time for reflection, peer support, supervision, but bottom up approach equally important #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Kindness and compassion at its core. That says it all #Physiotalk
Nicola Lauchlan @NicolaLauchlan

Odharnait Lambe @OdharnaitLambe
@physiotalk Clinical demands, emotionally demanding cases, lack of structures in place to debrief & discuss, perceived expectations from patients/family members/colleagues #physiotalk
Claire Campbell @ClaireC_PT
@physiotalk It comes from the top. Management need to demonstrate leadership in how they look after their own mental health and prioritise it for the team. It’s easy to create an atmosphere of stress and under value staff. #physiotalk
Andrea Selley @Andrea_Selley
I also think workplaces that cultivate friendships and build teams that trust one another rather than just colleagues working alongside each other promote positive wellbeing. Love my team @LancsHospitals #physiotalk
Hari Babu RiJal 🇳🇵🇳🇵 @Physio_myRehab
@physiotalk positive workplace culture, stress & other risks to mental health are managed, more people with mental health conditions are exposed, notolerance approach to discrimination are the supportive workplace which support positive mental health #physiotalk

Ian Tyrrell @IanTyrrell5
@logan_angie @physiotalk Agree, it’s just a culture shift isn’t it. We need to all be more comfortable about talking about what matters and how we’re feeling but we’re more confident on focusing on what’s going well, and portraying a good image of ourselves. #physiotalk

@ClaireCraig_PT @physiotalk It always looks fabulous and I'd love to try, but with no one watching :) #physiotalk
Natasha Hinwood @NatashaHinwood
@physiotalk I also feel like if we can't individually, on a personal level, be proactive about addressing stress and mental health issues, how can we really (a) understand how hard it is for our own patients and (b) teach patients to self-advocate and do the same? #physiotalk

Final question coming up now.. #physiotalk
Claire Craig @ClaireCraig_PT
@OdharnaitLambe @physiotalk #physiotalk learning to say no I think is key at work as well.i now recognise my own limitations& set my boundaries much better than I used too. I still work late etc, but it's on my own terms- no one tells me too and if I'm having a bad day I take my breaks &leave on time!

Q5: How can we support the mental health of our colleagues? And how do we identify if someone needs a bit of support? #physiotalk
Ellena @ellena_farrow
@physiotalk Do what you enjoy!!! Have a life! I loved my old job down south but left it because my out of work life wasn’t up to scratch, my mental health is 100% better up north fell running on mountains in my spare time. Do what makes you happy ❤️ #physiotalk

@physiotalk Asking the difficult question, seeing the non-verbal clues, knowing when someone is having a bad day/week/month. Being approachable, confidential and non judgemental. Not professing you know the answers but listening. #physiotalk

@JanetThomas47 @OdharnaitLambe @physiotalk @Beaumont_Dublin I did one for a colleague recently who said she really appreciated it as she was having a tough week. Small gestures can have a big impact #Physiotalk
Helen Caldwell @caldwell_pt
@physiotalk People display difficulty with mental health in different ways e.g withdrawn, mega stressed, anxious. I think it’s important to get to know the people you work with & ask them what their signs are and tell people what your signs are so we can look out for each other #physiotalk

@IanTyrrell5 @physiotalk What did they say? #physiotalk
Ian Tyrrell @IanTyrrell5
@physiotalk Personally I’ve read some books, trying to understand the brain, pschology and mental health. This has helped me in difficult situations, with both staff and patients. I say difficult that not the right word, but it’s helped me listen and explore problems better. #physiotalk
Claire Craig @ClaireCraig_PT
@IanTyrrell5 @physiotalk #physiotalk pretty spot on. Just being approachable and open to chat when needed. A cuppa often helps too
Angie Logan @logan_angie
@Louise_Brennan_ @physiotalk Thank you. Good luck to you too #PhD #physiotalk
Ellena @ellena_farrow
@physiotalk It’s really difficult to identify if someone needs help. It’s much easier to put on a happy front than admit you’re struggling. If you can be an honest, caring, non judgemental person, itll help people confide in you before you would realise they need help. #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@IanTyrrell5 That's interesting. Your openess to learning how to help in difficult situations says a lot. #physiotalk
Hari Babu RiJal 🇳🇵🇳🇵 @Physio_myRehab
@physiotalk we should listen without making judgements & concentrate on their needs in that moment, never dismiss their feeling rather acknowledge how the symptoms are making them feel so & remind their existence #physiotalk
Fiona Barrett @fiona_b89
@physiotalk We can ask the simple questions - are you ok? Provide an opportunity for a conversation. Have wellbeing champions to promote health and wellbeing within the therapy team. Knowing your colleagues will allow you to identify a change #physiotalk
