Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
[REDACTED USER] Thank you Gemma for hosting tonight for the first time as part of the [REDACTED USER] team #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
[REDACTED USER] Joining in tonight from a bright but chilly Edinburgh And interested to see how much the strength message is being shared with our patients! #physiotalk
Susanne syme @SymeSusanne
[REDACTED USER] Susanne from Somerset #physiotalk
@
[REDACTED USER] Helen, Rehab services lead, joining from 🌧 Woking in Surrey. #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
[REDACTED USER] Yes - it was certainly integrated into my training in the late 80's. And since then some training on strength training with older people as well. #physiotalk
Susanne syme @SymeSusanne
[REDACTED USER] I believe to learn safe techniques i needed in person training which is difficult at the moment #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
[REDACTED USER] My frailer older patients are surprised to be offered strength based training. They often don't think its 'for them' But once they see the benefits... #physiotalk
Susanne syme @SymeSusanne
[REDACTED USER] Not being able to see people often enough to coach them in safe techniques and progression and dealing with set backs #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Yes - would certainly agree with this. Is a group where providing assistance for function often more important #physiotalk
Susanne syme @SymeSusanne
[REDACTED USER] Individuals often decide if they feel well enough or able to engage, in an ideal world they could access what they need when they are ready but services are often very focused on management of acute health problems and then finding the right professional is a problem #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] I know! Need to link in with functional gains rather than bulging biceps... #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
[REDACTED USER] For older people - make it functional with lots of body weight resistance And realise what is hard work for them might be very light weights - I had someone today whose 1RM quads was 1.5kg #physiotalk
@
[REDACTED USER] #physiotalk for cardiac populations, increasing safety and reducing risk by avoiding valsalva and avoiding overhead lifting in those with hypertension
@
[REDACTED USER] #physiotalk for those on/post cancer treatment, some need adaptations due to lymphoedema/post-surgery recovery/PICC lines
@
[REDACTED USER] #physiotalk case-by-case basis. If borderline hypertension I would reduce the load, and set reps/sets appropriately. Would only avoid altogether if poorly controlled hypertension. Would also take into consideration resting heart rate (if this is also high then higher RPP)
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] Agree I think that unless it is much later stage rehab an older person needs to either concentrate on balance OR strength but they can't do both at once #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
[REDACTED USER] Measure Measure Measure Then ask how much effort they are putting in / feeling #physiotalk
@
[REDACTED USER] [REDACTED USER] #physiotalk Great question (ran out of characters!) Rate Pressure Product. Heart rate x systolic blood pressure, more accurate measure of myocardial workload than HR alone.
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
[REDACTED USER] They need to 'see' the change and benefits With older people that can be linked to function quite easily and self monitoring with something like a 5xSTS #physiotalk
Susanne syme @SymeSusanne
[REDACTED USER] any chance of signposting to training?#physiotalk
