@physiotalk Unsurprising really. What is worrying is the high percentage of those saying 'significantly' more - wonder how they are managing that? #physiotalk

physiotalk @physiotalk
Q1 Is your workplace supporting or prioritising your mental health needs? #physiotalk
Leasa Fish @LeasaFish
@physiotalk Hi... Leasa Physio from Lancashire #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@physiotalk I feel that my NHS workplace is putting a great deal of emphasis on wellbeing. There are lots of initiatives to help support us #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@physiotalk I've not particularly needed them, but there is support from mindfulness, to Tai Chi to counselling or chaplaincy support available. #physiotalk
Jo Lockyear @JolockyearPT
@physiotalk Yes, Daily ‘check ins’ to see how we are, reiterating who the trust contactsare for health and well-being support, lots of new information to ensure we are informed and listening to our questions/concerns to reduce anxiety #physiotalk
Louise Knight @louiseblissphys
@physiotalk My NHS workplace has put a strong emphasis on wellbeing and has offered more access to services/resources that we might find useful #physiotalk
Physiophilip @physiophilip
@physiotalk #physiotalk thankfully yes! Support and signposting. we have been able to deliver some staff training and some of our amazing team have delivered on anxiety, wellbeing and resiliance!
physiotalk @physiotalk
#physiotalk
Dale Whelehan @Daleyfurter
@physiotalk Yep! Our wellbeing officer, psych department and physiotherapy have made significant provisions for education and provision of individual support. In addition, virtual training on resiliency has been rolled out. Big focus now on #FightFatigue in the hospital is next. #physiotalk
Miranda Zwiehoff @mirandazwiehoff
@physiotalk I feel in general, that all the workplaces try to do whatever they can to support everyone during that time. It's a big aim to give everyone personal protection #physiotalk
Jo Lockyear @JolockyearPT
@physiotalk Access to headspace and other apps free atm for NHS which I’ve found a good resource #physiotalk
Leasa Fish @LeasaFish
@physiotalk #physiotalk Yes lots of promotion around Well-being in our Trust as well, not sure how people are getting on if needing to use it.. no feedback as yet
physiotalk @physiotalk
#physiotalk
Roxy 🎀 @RuqayyaFortune
@physiotalk At @SMU_SA , psychology services are offered to all students and staff - free of charge. The department prefers to have face-to-face sessions but electronic sessions via email is possible upon request - since SA has been on lockdown since March of 2020. #physiotalk
Wolvesburg 'til I die @jordanawale
@physiotalk #physiotalk from a hotel in Birmingham so I can isolate but still be able to work
Dale Whelehan @Daleyfurter
@physiotalk Some of the insights shared include an increase in 'moral injury' amongst colleagues as well as COVID fatigue i.e. leaving work but still being surrounded by COVID-influenced aspects of life - a 'heightened' experience of the pandemic compared to general public #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@Daleyfurter That is really interesting. Do you think that applies to those working outside of COPVID areas as well? #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
What about if you are self employed or a student etc. Are you getting support? #physiotalk
Dale Whelehan @Daleyfurter
@physiotalk There is definitely increased general public anxiety - you'll also notice people talking about huge changes in sleep patterns. But HCPs have the added anxiety of being at high risk of contracting the virus themselves and wanting to do whats best for patient care #physiotalk
Roxy 🎀 @RuqayyaFortune
@physiotalk @SMU_SA The HOD and lecturers of the Physio department sends heartwarming voice notes to motivate students and texts/calls individuals to find out how they are coping. #physiotalk
Laura Grugel @LGrugel21
@physiotalk We have a well being hub staff can access anytime - quiet environment away from the wards with a staff helper, access to headspace, mindfulness and exercise groups at lunch time :) #physiotalk
Dale Whelehan @Daleyfurter
@physiotalk I give an example - hospital policy now mandates full donning before completing CPR to protect yourself - goes against the very intuitive behaviour of HCPs and contributes to that level of 'moral injury' #physiotalk
Liz Cowan BSc Hons,MCSP.Cheshire Children's Physio @liziophysio1
@physiotalk I think when you make the decision to go self-employed the need to create support networks is there from the outset, even in good times. In these bad times it is needed more than ever. SoMe, WhatsApp etc are good ways of keeping in touch. #physiotalk
Olivia @Olivia_Robo
RT @physiotalk: So far over 70% of people answering the poll say they do feel under more stress or strain at present #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
#physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Some great examples of workplace support - it seems like this has been well thought about! Onto the next question... #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Q2 Are you still having regular supervision sessions – even if virtual in some way #physiotalk
Dale Whelehan @Daleyfurter
@louiseblissphys @physiotalk And of course then having to self isolate from family due to risk of passing the virus on. In some senses HCPs have never been more supported yet more alone #physiotalk
Liz Cowan BSc Hons,MCSP.Cheshire Children's Physio @liziophysio1
@Daleyfurter @physiotalk #physiotalk there is also the anxiety amongst us not able to work (face to face) that our clients are physically deteriorating, their health needs not met and the feeling of abandonment by the health system. COVID fallout may long lasting and painful.
Jo Lockyear @JolockyearPT
@louiseblissphys @Daleyfurter @physiotalk Also the worry of passing the virus onto other family members at home #physiotalk
Physiophilip @physiophilip
@physiotalk @Daleyfurter #physiotalk I do, the ripples throughout the system are massive and the insight and experiences we have add to our perceptions.
physiotalk @physiotalk
@liziophysio1 @Daleyfurter Do others feel this? There are many client groups who we just are not seeing at present. #physiotalk
Claire George @clairegeorge03
@physiotalk Health & wellbeing has always been a priority at my trust. We already have great foundations of services & resources available to staff which has now been expanded. We receive daily emails and have a dedicated portal. I also feel that I could raise concerns if needed #physiotalk
Sibyl Edward, D.P.T. @pasl_pt
More so when the clients are calling up for fear they might be deteriorating #physiotalk
Carys Williams @Caryswilliams__
@physiotalk The university offers phone based counselling services for students and staff. Our lecturers have expressed that we can contact them if we have concerns or worries. Many lecturers have been redeployed however they have still been very supportive! #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Just a bit of a reminder to remember to use #physiotalk in all of your tweets during the chat please! https://t.co/HntxDi86cm
Dale Whelehan @Daleyfurter
@liziophysio1 @physiotalk I think we are now entering an unprecedented level of fatigue amongst workers that is going to be difficult to rectify - once COVID has blown over, the 'backlog' of patients will come flooding in. Coupled with COVID rehab needs, the strain on HCPs is going to be a lot #physiotalk
Physiophilip @physiophilip
@liziophysio1 @Daleyfurter @physiotalk #physiotalk Great point it is system wide. those that are not 'busy' may feel guilt.
Roxy 🎀 @RuqayyaFortune
@physiotalk An online system on teaching and learning is in the pipeline and students were able to voice their challenges in a survey that the university sent. These challenges are currently being worked on but lecturers communicate with students regularly #physiotalk
Leasa Fish @LeasaFish
@physiotalk #physiotalk I think this is variable and dependent on where redeployed to, change of teams, resource but something we should push to maintain
Louise Knight @louiseblissphys
@physiotalk @liziophysio1 @Daleyfurter It was heartbreaking having to discharge so many of my outpatients (MSK) it pass them on to telephone consultations, knowing some of them would have VERY different outcomes without face to face consultations #physiotalk
Sibyl Edward, D.P.T. @pasl_pt
Yep. #physiotalk
Hannah Rooney @HannahRooney1
@physiotalk #physiotalk Only with physio friends from uni! Not been any time available to see my line manager. I broke down in a senior nurses meeting which therapy leads attend (full on ugly sobbing!) and from that had a debrief with DON 🤦🏻‍♀️ mortified, but worth it in the end 1/2
Louise Knight @louiseblissphys
@physiotalk No, I don’t currently have a named supervisor.. but can rely on excellent team leads from my previous (usual) and current teams if I need to discuss anything #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@pasl_pt We have been able to do some phone calls to the patients we were seeing pre-COVID. They all really appreciated having this call to see how they are getting on - luckily so far no real deterioration although its difficult to tell from a call! #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
RT @Daleyfurter: @liziophysio1 @physiotalk I think we are now entering an unprecedented level of fatigue amongst workers that is going to b…
Jo Lockyear @JolockyearPT
@physiotalk Plenty of In direct supervision rather than a structured meeting. Due to up staffing there’s plenty of senior members around to ask any questions 👍🏻 #physiotalk
Hannah Rooney @HannahRooney1
@physiotalk 2/2 #physiotalk as meant they were aware of the pressures AHP’s and physios under, which differs greatly to nursing staff (I find) and that we don’t tend to have that peer support so much at leadership level
physiotalk @physiotalk
@HannahRooney1 That's interesting. Why do you feel the pressures (and peer support) are different? #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Half way through - better get on with the next question! #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Q3 Can you take 'time out' at work or is this something you focus on when at home? #physiotalk
Jo Lockyear @JolockyearPT
@Daleyfurter @physiotalk @liziophysio1 Couldn’t agree more, I think then the well-being support will be even more important #physiotalk
Jo Lockyear @JolockyearPT

Louise Knight @louiseblissphys
@physiotalk We have been encouraged to use annual leave wisely, and not allowed to cancel previously booked leave without a good reason. Not yet needed to take time out at work but have instead booked myself regular leave. Wobble room available! #physiotalk
Roxy 🎀 @RuqayyaFortune
@physiotalk SA has been on lockdown since March of 2020. As a student, I'm able to work and revise at my own pace in an environment I feel most comfortable in - my home! #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@louiseblissphys Can you all take annual leave if needed? I was off today for May Day and it was lovely to have a break! #physiotalk
Ben at Neuro Rehab Essex @NeuroRehabEssex
@physiotalk Absolutely, the working world is variable with busy days and unsociable hours common and family to still care for. If you reach a natural break in your work during work hours, take the time for yourself! The work will always pick back up again so rest when you can 👍 #physiotalk
Physiophilip @physiophilip
@physiotalk #physiotalk Yes, but tricky to focus on time out at home when working at home! I shared an idea with our home working staff to 'transition' from work time to home time. Maybe a walk round the garden, to help with this
physiotalk @physiotalk
@physiophilip That's a great idea! #physiotalk

#AcademicTwitter: need recs on a research-grade, self-contained heart rate monitor to assess HR during video chat study (would deliver to and pick up from participants’ home). #physiology #Science #ScienceAtHome #physiotalk #phdchat #researchers
Hannah Rooney @HannahRooney1
@physiotalk #physiotalk because we’re more autonomous the consensus from the trust team leads is (in my experience) that we make our own decisions around service provision and the depth of understanding at operational level may not be the same as for other staff groups 1/2
Dale Whelehan @Daleyfurter
@physiotalk The very much necessary pairing of physios into 'zones' increases social isolation. Ireland have had a 2km zone restriction also which limits you. To reduce COVID-associated anxiety I practice ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy) to try and get sufficient sleep! #physiotalk
Leasa Fish @LeasaFish
@physiotalk #physiotalk definitely honouring annual leave , I am lucky enough to still be working part time so more downtime than some which helps. Busy lives outside of work as well with home schooling too!
Jo Lockyear @JolockyearPT
@louiseblissphys @physiotalk Yeah same, annual leave is encouraged although I’d like to do more than just sit at home for my leave 🤦🏼‍♀️😂. Not taken any time out at work, so unsure if this is a thing. #physiotalk
Louise Knight @louiseblissphys
@physiotalk Process seems to be quite easy to take leave, only complication is working for a different team and making sure it fits with staffing levels. Which is near impossible to anticipate with current high sickness rates! #physiotalk
Liz Cowan BSc Hons,MCSP.Cheshire Children's Physio @liziophysio1
@physiotalk for the self employed the anxiety includes worry about finances and loss of business. Many businesses will not be able to claim government help. Clinicians signed up to bank work but have not been utilised. #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@JolockyearPT @louiseblissphys @physiotalk I spent todays holiday re-varnishing chairs. They say a change is as good as a rest... #physiotalk
Hannah Rooney @HannahRooney1
@physiotalk 2/2 #physiotalk therefore making those decisions can feel quite a weight of responsibility. My trust is great at offering support for my development, I would just appreciate more peer support especially at this time. As a tertiary centre with small therapy/AHP no’s it’s tricky 🤷🏻‍♀️
kirstie @blueghee80
@physiotalk We are very supported with mental health with signposting to services and resources, wellness apps, support from our supervisors to discuss anything and we have a chaplain visit to talk with us #physiotalk
Jo Lockyear @JolockyearPT
@JanetThomas47 @louiseblissphys @physiotalk I did spend my day cycling. I’m spending my days exercise a lot, would explain the overuse injuries I’m getting... need to practice what I preach hey! 😂 #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@HannahRooney1 Do you feel that contacts made via social media can help support? #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Moving onto our next question #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Q4 What suggestions do you have about supporting your own wellbeing? #physiotalk
Dale Whelehan @Daleyfurter
@physiophilip @physiotalk I am primarily home-based also. Not easy to get into that mindset isn't it?! The monotony of it all makes the differentiation difficult #physiotalk
Wolvesburg 'til I die @jordanawale
@physiotalk #physiotalk don't think it's been discussed really. Personally exercising and watching random documentaries are a good down time tho
Louise Knight @louiseblissphys
@JolockyearPT @JanetThomas47 @physiotalk The amount of tendinopathies at the end of this... my colleagues in hands and plastics say they have plenty of work with all the DIY going on 😂 #physiotalk
Chris Martey @ChrisMartey
@physiotalk Working from home offers opportunities pre- and post-work; not having to commute can make room for some self-care & wellbeing time, be it trying something new or getting back into something you'd previously enjoyed. #PhysioTalk
Physiophilip @physiophilip
@physiotalk @HannahRooney1 #physiotalk we have a great network of peers in other hospices and settings that are amazing. Not quite the same but can help?
Dale Whelehan @Daleyfurter
@louiseblissphys @JolockyearPT @JanetThomas47 @physiotalk I had guessed this considering everyone is out running crazy times and distances these days with basically no training. Poor MSK physio! #physiotalk
kirstie @blueghee80
@physiotalk I've been recalled beginning of March to inpatients from womens health as I had just rotated (B5 rotationtal). Unfortunately I haven't been allocated a supervisor so no supervision has been done. It has been acknowledged and this will be sorted but I don't know when. #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@Daleyfurter @physiophilip @physiotalk I'm lucky as my university home working days are split with my NHS in hospital days. Working just at home would be quite difficult I think! #physiotalk
Claire George @clairegeorge03
@physiotalk Yes, I feel completely supported. I’m actively encouraged to ask any questions and seek advice. Surely now is an excellent example of why mentorship is so important in our profession when considering staff health and wellbeing #physiotalk
Jo Lockyear @JolockyearPT
@Daleyfurter @louiseblissphys @JanetThomas47 @physiotalk Yes msk physios will be very busy after this! I wonder if people will keep up with the exercise after this 🤔 #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
There have been a few apps suggested - do you have any you particularly like? #physiotalk
Leasa Fish @LeasaFish
@physiotalk #physiotalk I think talking in general to peers and family, keeping open about how feeling generally, lots of fresh air and exercise in whatever form you can within the SD rules.
Louise Knight @louiseblissphys
@physiotalk Stay off the news where possible. Be outdoors. Meditation. Connect virtually with loved ones. Have realistic expectations of self. Be productive at home (projects/hobbies). Exercise. Bake. Create. #physiotalk
Carys Williams @Caryswilliams__
@Daleyfurter @physiophilip @physiotalk I found trying to write an essay from my university room difficult (would normally use the library), it was hard to get into the headspace of working in an environment I associate with relaxing #physiotalk
Physiophilip @physiophilip
@Daleyfurter @physiotalk #physiotalk I have a balance of home and in work (so thankful). Family make it hard to balance and feel you are doing a good job in both the home/work balance!
Hannah Rooney @HannahRooney1
@physiotalk #physiotalk main example being that of PPE for AGP’s. Trying to highlight to all about our role and the potential for AGP’s seemed like a mammoth task and slightly disheartening that people didn’t understand our role in patient care and the risks involved! They listened though 🙏
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@JolockyearPT @Daleyfurter @louiseblissphys @physiotalk I'm seeing far more people out exercising than usual. I hope it continues! Went out for a run after my varnishing (!) and spent a fair bit of time dodging the other walkers and runners #physiotalk
Jo Lockyear @JolockyearPT
@physiotalk Turning off the tv, I can’t face watching more about covid19 after a day at work. Exercise has been a great escape for me and headspace #physiotalk
Dale Whelehan @Daleyfurter
@JolockyearPT @louiseblissphys @JanetThomas47 @physiotalk Gyms closed here till August - so many won't have a choice re outdoor exercise! I think efforts such as the 5km challenge have deterred many - unrealistic social media driven expectations likely to make many feel disillusioned with exercise being only competitive #physiotalk
Ben at Neuro Rehab Essex @NeuroRehabEssex
@physiotalk Do not multi-task at work! If something critical needs doing, turn off your phone and close your emails, they can wait. You will complete your task more quickly and not become stressed at seeing tasks mounting up. #physiotalk
Hannah Rooney @HannahRooney1
@physiotalk #physiotalk definitely just at home, just don’t get a minute!
Leasa Fish @LeasaFish

RT @LeasaFish: @louiseblissphys @physiotalk #physiotalk I think your idea of avoiding the news is a great one 👍🏻
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47

@physiotalk I don't have any news on at home, as a family we go for walks most days and try to leave work at work. Talking about issues or situations at work can help to process things. Our leads are very proactive about coming to them with any situations we want to talk about. #physiotalk

@physiotalk Being frontline for some of my working week, encouraging AL and changing rota’s to support time off. Being visible, communicating x2daily huddles, seeking out those that don’t seem themselves, providing safe space in office, texting, saying thank you everyday #physiotalk

@physiotalk Very important to listen to others and check others are ok. We are doing a wellbeing weekly activity on Wednesdays like doing a quiz. Play music at lunch break. Encourage people to attend the r&r too #Physiotalk

@apgphysio @physiotalk It was hard to get into, but stick with the 10 day introduction ones, it does help once you use it regularly, the sleep section is a great way to get started too #physiotalk

So far the poll at the start is showing that 79% feel under a little or a lot of stress or strain at work Presume this is despite the support that most workplaces seem to be offering #physiotalk

@physiotalk #physiotalk would this be universal across the population? The past hour has shown how well the workplace and peer support is at the moment. Long may it continue! I wonder what the results would have been like without it and shows the stress and strain, though there ,is managed.

@physiotalk I’ve always asked people how they are and if they are ok. I’ll make time to chat to colleagues over a cuppa, even if they want to talk about a completely random topic to take their minds off things #ItsOkayToNotBeOkay #physiotalk
Hannah Rooney @HannahRooney1
@physiotalk #physiotalk for me it’s just the constant change and uncertainty, trying to maintain morale and ‘look after’ everyone’s mental health. And 2 kids at home with daddy day care destroying the house on a daily basis does nothing for keeping calm! Thanks for the chat, good to offload👍

@LeasaFish @louiseblissphys @physiotalk I agree with this, I made the mistake of opening bbc news app on a day off to find that a patient we had been treating had passed away. Given the mass media publication, I'm finding work slipping into home life a lot more which I think risks staff burnout. #physiotalk
