![]() | Gemma Hawtin 💙 @gvhawtin @physiotalk It’s a yes from me #physiotalk we can all learn from each other to provide the best place for staff and patients no matter who we are |
![]() | physiotalk @physiotalk Now onto the questions – to delve a little deeper into diversity in physiotherapy. And by diversity we are thinking about all its facets – ethnicity, disability and LGBTQI amongst others #Physiotalk |
![]() | Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime RT @physiotalk: We are running tonights tweetchat in more of a debate style: We are running tonights tweetchat in more of a debate style: ‘This house believes that the physiotherapy profession needs to be more diverse’. ![]() | physiotalk @physiotalk Q 1: Do you consider yourself to be from a more diverse part of the population? And is that equally represented in within the physiotherapy profession? #physiotalk https://t.co/6oaEQ5exZZ |
![]() | physiotalk @physiotalk #Physiotalk |
![]() | Suk Wong (she/her) @SukWong9 @physiotalk #physiotalk Yes with regards to ethnicity which is not represented within the profession especially in the North |
![]() | Dr Melrose Stewart MBE @MelroseStewart1 @physiotalk #physiotalk 'A more diverse part of the population'? Depends what characteristics and in what context. |
![]() | Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47 @physiotalk No - I'm from the white female majority that makes up the physiotherapy profession. And certainly where I live in Scotland, the wider diversity of population is not represented in our profession. #physiotalk |
![]() | physiotalk @physiotalk @SukWong9 Do you think there is a strong geographical (in the UK) difference? I think so - but I only see one part of the UK of course! #physiotalk |
![]() | physiotalk @physiotalk @MelroseStewart1 Yes- very difficult to get across in a few characters! Do you have a protected characteristic or consider yourself part of an under represented section of the population?? #physiotalk |
![]() | Laura Chimimba 🧡 @LauraC_Physio @JanetThomas47 @physiotalk I think thats common in most areas and with regards to all aspects of diversity: socioeconomic group, race, sexuality, disability etc #physiotalk |
![]() | Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime @physiotalk I agree 💯. The physiotherapy profession needs to be more diverse. I've worked with many teams where I've been the only non-white team member. In some instances it's been tough to adjust & fit in, and other times it's been smooth sailing. #LocumPhysio #physiotalk |
![]() | physiotalk @physiotalk @SukWong9 Particularly wondering about anyone based in more metropolitan areas of England perhaps? Wider representation - or not? #physiotalk |
![]() | Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime RT @MelroseStewart1: @physiotalk #physiotalk 'A more diverse part of the population'? Depends what characteristics and in what context. |
![]() | Suk Wong (she/her) @SukWong9 @physiotalk #physiotalk I can only speak from where I have worked Sheffield/Wigan. Sheffield has a more diverse population with two universities but not represented in the profession. |

![]() | physiotalk @physiotalk @SukWong9 Even in the student physios? #physiotalk |
![]() | physiotalk @physiotalk Moving onto our next question #physiotalk |
![]() | physiotalk @physiotalk Q 2: How does lack of diversity affect physiotherapy? #physiotalk https://t.co/RsWy5i83do |
![]() | Gemma Hawtin 💙 @gvhawtin @physiotalk A1 #physiotalk No but I have worked with many teams across Leeds, Bradford & Airedale reorientation was there in these teams |
![]() | physiotalk @physiotalk #Physiotalk https://t.co/ytiM02EnJE |
![]() | Dr Melrose Stewart MBE @MelroseStewart1 @physiotalk @SukWong9 #physiotalk The population in Birmingham is very diverse but physiotherapy population not so |
![]() | Suk Wong (she/her) @SukWong9 @physiotalk #physiotalk I suppose it varies depending on cohort but larger percentage of international students Vs qualified therapists. But when they go out on placement on a less diverse placement, it might impact their perception |
![]() | Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47 @physiotalk So many ways! We may not attract people who would be fantastic physios for a start! And we need to reflect the populations we treat as well. #physiotalk |
![]() | Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime @physiotalk #BAME members are underrepresented in the physiotherapy and other @WeAHPs professions where I work and in many other parts of the UK. #physiotalk |
![]() | physiotalk @physiotalk @JustineMusiime @WeAHPs That doesn't seem to be quite the same in nursing though (I think!) I do wonder why this is the case? #physiotalk |

![]() | Suk Wong (she/her) @SukWong9 @physiotalk We weren't taught at uni (back in the day) how bruising can appear different on darker skin, or why trans patients/ patients from certain cultures might be uncomfortable with undressing for a physio Ax. #physiotalk |
![]() | physiotalk @physiotalk RT @SukWong9: @physiotalk We weren't taught at uni (back in the day) how bruising can appear different on darker skin, or why trans patients/ patients from certain cultures might be uncomfortable with undressing for a physio Ax. #physiotalk |
![]() | Dr Melrose Stewart MBE @MelroseStewart1 @physiotalk #physiotalk Deliver more effective treatment? Imagine going into a strange country and finding someone who speaks your language and understands your culture. Or in your own country feeling you belong and the physio will understands you |
![]() | Ben Black @BenBlackPhysio @physiotalk The more diverse we are the broader and more effectively we can reach our patient population by connecting with them to improve health education and physiotherapy principles. #physiotalk |
![]() | Laura Chimimba 🧡 @LauraC_Physio @JanetThomas47 @physiotalk “You can’t be what you can’t see”. Sadly theres still a lot of stories of minoritised students being dissuaded from physio because its assumed they would not succeed #physiotalk |
![]() | physiotalk @physiotalk @SukWong9 And do you think this is now part of the curriculum? I know I have seen a twitter discussion about dermatology linked to skin colour - and how the textbooks are based on an assumption of white skin. #physiotalk |

![]() | BHJ Respiratory @BhjRespiratory @JanetThomas47 @physiotalk Agreed, white female and that has been the same for most long term colleagues, followed by white male. #physiotalk |
![]() | physiotalk @physiotalk @LauraC_Physio @JanetThomas47 From schools or do you think from universities as well? #physiotalk |
![]() | physiotalk @physiotalk Q3: What are the institutional problems within our profession? #physiotalk https://t.co/OgSGlHhH9S |
![]() | Laura Chimimba 🧡 @LauraC_Physio @physiotalk @JanetThomas47 The examples I’ve come across has been schools - telling students they should look for an easier course. Fortunately there are unis now trying to encourage applicantions from more diverse groups. Even just embracing different sources of work experience can be helpful #physiotalk |
![]() | Dr Melrose Stewart MBE @MelroseStewart1 @physiotalk @JustineMusiime @WeAHPs Complex reasons but I am guessing historically, entry gates into physio were more elitist? Many nurses were admitted to SEN status initially Also depends on University entry requirements, flexibility, widening participation schemes etc #physiotalk |
![]() | BHJ Respiratory @BhjRespiratory @physiotalk #physiotalk it effects our care - as others have said, not taught about skin colour differences in bruises from abuse or pressure. Can lead to accidental insult by demanding removal of clothing or refusing to remove shoes - both I’ve seen and educated on with B5s and students |
![]() | physiotalk @physiotalk @BhjRespiratory @JanetThomas47 The gender balance is beginning to shift now at least. Time for the balance on everything else to shift! #physiotalk |
![]() | (Sri)kesavan Sabapathy @Srikesavan @physiotalk Sri from Oxford... #physiotalk |
![]() | Suk Wong (she/her) @SukWong9 @physiotalk #physiotalk I am unsure as I do not work within academia. I know there has been more discussions on twitter/social media. I feel students are more aware of diversity, perhaps because it is discussed more and they interact on social media? |
![]() | physiotalk @physiotalk Thinking about other characteristics linked to disability as well - widening participation is starting to attract more students with disabilities. Are they then disadvantaged in our workplaces? #physiotalk |
![]() | physiotalk @physiotalk @Srikesavan Welcome #physiotalk |
![]() | Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime @physiotalk Different people know their communities' cultures, norms, taboos, challenges, etc. Lack of diversity in our teams limits our cultural awareness, which in turn can reduce the effectiveness of our physiotherapy interventions & worsen the gap in health inequalities. #physiotalk |

![]() | Anna Spiteri @spiteri_anna @physiotalk #physiotalk I think the Apprenticeship route into AHP careers including Physiotherapy is a step in the right direction. More opportunity for people to enter the profession through alternative routes other than GCSEs, A Levels #physiotalk |

![]() | Anna Spiteri @spiteri_anna RT @physiotalk: Time is really flying part tonight! A couple of questions now including those from our followers outside of the UK #physiotalk |
![]() | (Sri)kesavan Sabapathy @Srikesavan @physiotalk I don't think so. Physiotherapy is growing and branching out into multiple areas. There is room for physiotherapists with all protected characteristics. Managers need to be creative and proactive during recruitment #physiotalk |
![]() | Dr Melrose Stewart MBE @MelroseStewart1 @LauraC_Physio @JanetThomas47 @physiotalk #physiotalk You can become what you cannot see (NB pioneers) but it is not an easy road to navigate! #representationmatters |
![]() | physiotalk @physiotalk Q5 How do we make working in research more visible and valued, especially for people from a more diverse background? #physiotalk https://t.co/WDd8M4wrLf |
![]() | Suk Wong (she/her) @SukWong9 @physiotalk #physiotalk I feel the environment of workplaces doesn't always lend itself to inclusivity. I.e. a busy acute ward can be very noisy (I e. hearing impairment), sensory overload, not wheelchair accessible etc |
![]() | BHJ Respiratory @BhjRespiratory @physiotalk #physiotalk tough one! From my experience, not so much cultural/ethnicity, but the assumption that being a physio means no long term conditions and therefore not supporting adequately/brushing over/‘forgetting’. Seen in multiple teams/individuals/cases |
![]() | physiotalk @physiotalk RT @Srikesavan: @physiotalk I don't think so. Physiotherapy is growing and branching out into multiple areas. There is room for physiotherapists with all protected characteristics. Managers need to be creative and proactive during recruitment #physiotalk |
![]() | physiotalk @physiotalk @Srikesavan Do you have suggestions about how to facilitate recruitment in this way? #physiotalk |
![]() | Laura Chimimba 🧡 @LauraC_Physio @physiotalk I suspect so. As departments are under greater pressures do they often assume that accomodating disabilities would be too challenging? Unfortunately examples of good practice doesn’t apprar to be prompted enough to help breakdown misconceptions #physiotalk |

![]() | BHJ Respiratory @BhjRespiratory @physiotalk #physiotalk late to the party as always, very tired in Derbyshire |
![]() | Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime @MelroseStewart1 @physiotalk @WeAHPs You are right @MelroseStewart1. It could also be due to awareness of the profession's existence. Personally, I'd never heard of Physiotherapy until I read it on the equivalent of the 'UCAS' application form. I only put it on the list because it had a nice ring to it! #physiotalk |
![]() | Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime RT @MelroseStewart1: @physiotalk @JustineMusiime @WeAHPs Complex reasons but I am guessing historically, entry gates into physio were more elitist? Many nurses were admitted to SEN status initially Also depends on University entry requirements, flexibility, widening participation schemes etc #physiotalk |
![]() | Dr Melrose Stewart MBE @MelroseStewart1 @Srikesavan @physiotalk I think our colleagues with registered or declared disabilities are best placed to answer this one. Experience tells me the road to equity for those with disabilities is still a pretty steep climb within institutions #physiotalk |
![]() | physiotalk @physiotalk @LauraC_Physio Supporting students with disabilities can be a challenge - but often because of educators lack of awareness or even preconceptions of what a 'physio' should be like? #physiotalk |
![]() | physiotalk @physiotalk Just over 10 minutes to go - and a few more questions to get through! The next is another from one of our followers. #physiotalk |
![]() | Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime @physiotalk @WeAHPs Traditionally, the options for being a health care professional were 'doctor' and 'nurse', and this is still the case in some people's minds. Media has a big part to play too. #physiotalk |
![]() | Dr Melrose Stewart MBE @MelroseStewart1 @JustineMusiime @physiotalk @WeAHPs Same here! I had never heard of physio, or my parents for that matter, until one of my friends said that was what she wanted to be one #physiotalk |

![]() | Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47 @physiotalk This one really interested me as a question. It is something I have never considered - but the more I think about it, the more that I wonder! #physiotalk |
![]() | physiotalk @physiotalk RT @JustineMusiime: @MelroseStewart1 @physiotalk @WeAHPs We've come a long way, yet still a long way to go! #physiotalk #diversity |
![]() | Dr Melrose Stewart MBE @MelroseStewart1 @physiotalk @LauraC_Physio Physios are guilty of negatively stereotyping and biases too! But hopefully we continue lifelong learning to address them appropriately? #physiotalk |
![]() | BHJ Respiratory @BhjRespiratory @physiotalk #physiotalk just as valuable if not more so. I would hope that more representative of the country’s diversity - perhaps in some cases white minority? Not sure if I misread the question though.. |
![]() | Laura Chimimba 🧡 @LauraC_Physio @physiotalk The simple act of providing it in someones native language if a dept serves a particular population is probably helpful, though suspect a lot more needs done during validation process of outcome development #physiotalk |
![]() | physiotalk @physiotalk @BhjRespiratory It came from a follower not in the UK. So I suspect one where the issue with diversity is very different to ours - but still a real issue! #physiotalk |
![]() | (Sri)kesavan Sabapathy @Srikesavan @physiotalk It would require significant amount of research investment to create culture specific outcomes measures. One way is to tap into the translation and cross cultural adaptation of outcomes measures work going on around the world #physiotalk |
![]() | BHJ Respiratory @BhjRespiratory @physiotalk #physiotalk promotion in professional circles - magazines, forums etc. make it seem more accessible - you don’t have to be in academia to contribute. Lose the distinction between a clinical physio and an academic physio, just physio. |
![]() | physiotalk @physiotalk @LauraC_Physio I wonder even with translation? Do we ask things that are assuming of a certain way of life perhaps? #physiotalk |
![]() | Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime @physiotalk Extremely underfunded and not prioritised as it should be. #physiotalk |

![]() | (Sri)kesavan Sabapathy @Srikesavan @physiotalk The WRES reports are saying no... The lived experiences are saying no... The reporting to fitness practice data is saying no... ![]() | BHJ Respiratory @BhjRespiratory @JustineMusiime @physiotalk #physiotalk there is always room for improvement. As long as someone can see that they will work towards it. Being blind to issues or deaf to concerns/suggestions just breeds ignorance- then nothing changes. |
![]() | Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime RT @JustineMusiime: @physiotalk We could do better! I think our differences make some people think that we are not good enough, or we are not worthy. Like someone saying that one is 'too passionate' or 'too loud' etc, & using that to deny someone an opportunity... I think that is not fair at all. #physiotalk |

![]() | Chris Richards 🏴 @chris_richards2 RT @spiteri_anna: @physiotalk #physiotalk I think the Apprenticeship route into AHP careers including Physiotherapy is a step in the right direction. More opportunity for people to enter the profession through alternative routes other than GCSEs, A Levels #physiotalk |

![]() | Dr Melrose Stewart MBE @MelroseStewart1 @Srikesavan @BhjRespiratory @physiotalk Perhaps not prefer but it might be less stressful and/or there is inadequate support? #physiotalk |
![]() | Gemma Hawtin 💙 @gvhawtin @MelroseStewart1 @spiteri_anna @physiotalk But also into being an amazing #AHPSupportWorkers such as leadership, management, education of students etc we have lots of skills and gaining more of us into Physiotherapy and as an associate member #physiotalk |
![]() | (Sri)kesavan Sabapathy @Srikesavan @BhjRespiratory @MelroseStewart1 @physiotalk Multiple factors isn't it...those who suffer need a safe an secure environment to voice their concerns. That would be the beginning to any solution #physiotalk |
![]() | Aimee Robson (she/her) @AimeeRobson4 @physiotalk Sharing reflection #physiotalk - as American trained and having worked in several countries- I needed to remind myself of poverty data and gender inequality metrics so I could contemplate answer. https://t.co/gINeUM3Caz https://t.co/S5iKxcrWWp |
![]() | Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime @physiotalk I've seen research (PhD) funding opportunities that openly exclude non-'home students'. This obviously excludes all physiotherapists who do not have UK citizenship or Indefinite Leave to Remain, thus limiting their chances of getting to work in research #Physiotalk |
