How will tonights chat work? We have eight questions chosen from your suggestions. We will be posting these through the hour. They are not just for the candidates of course - we want to open up the debate and discussion to you all as usual! #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
So to start, introduce yourself and if you are taking part as a candidate for the @thecsp elections please say that in your tweet. #physiotalk

@MelroseStewart1 @physiotalk #physiotalk there is a lot of engaging to do, the feedback is many members are becoming disengaged we need to change this.

Justine Greaves ( Croxton ) @Jusgreaves28
@JanetThomas47 @physiotalk It has a huge impact on recruitment at the moment in the MOD due to pay scales. Having taken this role , I realise even more the impact , WFH (Scotland) and being responsible for English facilities #physiotalk
Dr Melrose Stewart MBE @MelroseStewart1
@Jusgreaves28 @physiotalk Yes, lots of leg work involved in getting to know the membership and for them to get to know you? Constantly reaching out? #physiotalk

physiotalk @physiotalk
#Physiotalk
Justine Greaves ( Croxton ) @Jusgreaves28
@physiotalk Inequality as a profession including the wider world. Time to reflect and be creative to push boundaries and share new ideas. #physiotalk
HCPG @HCPG_Compliance
#physiotalk We are standing not to go with the flow and simply slot in, but to understand what the members want to see and understand what Council thinks is achievable. We are coming with ideas for change, not simply fitting in means things need to change so that we can.
Ishmael Beckford (he/him) 🇯🇲🇬🇧✊🏿 @IshmaelBeckford
@MelroseStewart1 @thecsp Re-engagement of the membership has to be a key strategic priority for the next council. Unless we do this we will only be serving a small proportion of the membership and perpetuating inequality, in terms of value Physio's get from their membership #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@MelroseStewart1 @thecsp I wonder if there has been more engagement recently driven by COVID? No idea though, but just wondering?? #physiotalk
Ishmael Beckford (he/him) 🇯🇲🇬🇧✊🏿 @IshmaelBeckford
Lots of frustrations! 1) Inequality & Discrimination 2) Elements of factionalism across the profession 3) Lack of engagement with the CSP/need for CSP to engage in a better way #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
RT @physiotalk: Q: What are your greatest frustrations with 21st century physiotherapy? #physiotalk
alexandra spearritt 😷💙 @AlexSpearritt
@physiotalk That our voice is not as strong as is could be, something we can move forward with by making our profession more inclusive and equitable. #EDB #leadership #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
#physiotalk
Justine Greaves ( Croxton ) @Jusgreaves28
@MelroseStewart1 @thecsp We need to make ourselves more visible and accessible and let them understand without this engagement there is no CSP at the end of the day. there is a need to keep the momentum going, like after Physio UK , showcase what can be achieved #physiotalk
HCPG @HCPG_Compliance
@MelroseStewart1 @thecsp #physiotalk Completely agree - big ask but hopefully accelerated using social media to be visible, ask questions, to get out there so to speak, and hear members voices.Aiming to get people to see us as approachable and a voice that acts as a conduit between themselves and council
julia_tabrah @julia_tabrah
@MelroseStewart1 @physiotalk @thecsp Engagement is a 2 way street. Some members are burnt out, disillusioned and not keen to engage right now. We need to show them that the CSP is listening, willing to change and make things better #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Halfway through - so better get question number 4 out! But please do still engage with the previous questions! #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Q: How do you plan to influence the development of support worker roles? #physiotalk
Selvakumaran Loganathan. @Selva02646964
COVID has brought about major change We have to adapt to the changes and to demands placed on our profession in short time sometimes leading to increased stress, burnout. Well-being , resilience, Virtual consultation in my opinion should form part of our training #physiotalk
julia_tabrah @julia_tabrah
@physiotalk That discrimination still exists in our profession #appalling That we don't have enough physios in senior leadership roles That the public still don't understand what we do. That we are underfunded and underappreciated #physiotalk
Gemma Scott @GemPhysioHealth
@physiotalk Thanks for the reminder. Anyone who hasn't seen my replies, please do to #physiotalk , there may be a few missed ones.

physiotalk @physiotalk
@GemPhysioHealth This is when you can tell there are two of us on the account tonight :) #physiotalk
Dr Melrose Stewart MBE @MelroseStewart1
@GemPhysioHealth @physiotalk Good Q Physios in bands forming the bulk of the profession? #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
RT @physiotalk: Q: How do you plan to influence the development of support worker roles? #physiotalk
Justine Greaves ( Croxton ) @Jusgreaves28
@physiotalk Push for apprenticeships , members annoyed that they cannot do this is in Scotland , apologies not sure about Wales and NI, Ensure assistants get same opportunities and have a voice at all tables , they need our support and should be forefront of our thoughts #physiotalk
Ishmael Beckford (he/him) 🇯🇲🇬🇧✊🏿 @IshmaelBeckford
Support work roles are critical to the profession, particularly now more than ever with the challenges of COVID, demand on resources and need to deliver services in effective, efficient and innovative ways. #physiotalk
Ishmael Beckford (he/him) 🇯🇲🇬🇧✊🏿 @IshmaelBeckford
I would: 1) Advocate maximising and furthering the scope of the support worker role 2) Highlight the value of Support Workers as part of the MDT 3) Work to build on existing CSP resources on support worker role and career development #physiotalk
alexandra spearritt 😷💙 @AlexSpearritt
@physiotalk As apprentice lead in therapies at my trust, I’ve supported b3’s to become b4 AP’s, other bands do progress with mentorship via NVQ. By influencing & promoting the implementation ofNHSI support workers framework I’ll support this development across the 4 countries #physiotalk
KB @KBNeuroinfo
@Selva02646964 As well as the challenges, covid brought real positives- sharing, collaboration and enhanced understanding of each other’s roles (in and outside PT) - how can we build on this? #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
And this includes development to Band 5 roles for support worker / non registered staff #physiotalk
julia_tabrah @julia_tabrah
@physiotalk Support workers are the foundation of our profession and crucial to our ability to adapt and continually improve services. We need to create career progression frameworks for support workers with resourced training and development #physiotalk
Justine Greaves ( Croxton ) @Jusgreaves28
@physiotalk Great to see the ERIs in the MOD are Band 5s , #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@Jusgreaves28 ERI?? #physiotalk
HCPG @HCPG_Compliance
1. Create an attractive, clear structure for progression for support workers. Keep it simple to avoid it becoming too bound down in bureaucracy. #physiotalk
Selvakumaran Loganathan. @Selva02646964
Wider consultation with the support workers to create common framework this will help in timely career progression, Create resources to develop their skills #physiotalk
HCPG @HCPG_Compliance
2.Highlight the value they bring to a service. Develop this across all areas UK rather then each doing it separately. Start to collaborate more and procrastinate less. #physiotalk
alexandra spearritt 😷💙 @AlexSpearritt
@physiotalk Yes! We are starting with B5 OTs this year after successful tender to a NW HEI. Also b7’s to B8s! Easily replicated across the 4 countries now processes in place #physiotalk
Justine Greaves ( Croxton ) @Jusgreaves28
@KBNeuroinfo @Selva02646964 This is difficult we try to share QIPs and best practice across my region but not easy and staff move frequently, I can only hope as they are deployed they can pass on the news #physiotalk
Ishmael Beckford (he/him) 🇯🇲🇬🇧✊🏿 @IshmaelBeckford
@KBNeuroinfo @Selva02646964 It is essential we don't "go back to normal" you are spot on we need to maintain the positive changes and be open to continuing to work in innovative ways. Highlighting the "positives" and working to embed effective changes needs to be a priority #physiotalk
HCPG @HCPG_Compliance
Sandra Harding is HCPG. Whoops, sorry for confusion anyone. #physiotalk
Dr Melrose Stewart MBE @MelroseStewart1
@julia_tabrah @physiotalk @thecsp Show and disseminate widely where action and results from those actions have taken place, and make clear, all members ARE the CSP? #physiotalk
Philippa Leishman @Leishm1Philippa
@physiotalk #physiotalk revamped all our support worker competencies, delegation SOP, structured meetings and progressing to improved IST structure
Justine Greaves ( Croxton ) @Jusgreaves28
@physiotalk Apologises Exercise Rehab Instructors civilians and service personnel #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
A couple of questions coming up now linked with supporting members whatever sector they work in ... #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Q: What will the candidate do to promote the independent and private sector? #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@Jusgreaves28 Thank you! Do they have specific qualifications to work in that role? #physiotalk
Gemma Scott @GemPhysioHealth
@JanetThomas47 @physiotalk #physiotalk They are indeed very different. Not least because the populations, local needs and political systems are different (although devolved nations take some direction from English Government).
HCPG @HCPG_Compliance
Previously managed service with sites in Wales and Scotland as well as England. Only been 1000 physios but we managed to adapt and share and meet the various differences in legislation, inspection etc. The key aspect was staff being engaged to want to make it happen #physiotalk
alexandra spearritt 😷💙 @AlexSpearritt
@physiotalk Thank you for having me, im sorry I have to leave half way through #parenthood 😊. Please feel free to DM me any further questions! 👍🏻#physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
#physiotalk
Justine Greaves ( Croxton ) @Jusgreaves28
@physiotalk I continue to work in Independent sector and MOD are similar in their representation. We should share our knowledge and ideas not be in competition, use each other to problem solve . If we integrate more there will be collaboration and members may engage more with CSP #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@AlexSpearritt Thank you for taking part #physiotalk
Justine Greaves ( Croxton ) @Jusgreaves28
@physiotalk Went over my word count on that one #physiotalk
HCPG @HCPG_Compliance
This is the sector in which I have worked most latterly and where the network is wide, understand the frustrations and also the similarities, discuss these regularly - will bring these to the council too. #physiotalk
Gemma Scott @GemPhysioHealth
@JanetThomas47 @physiotalk #physiotalk The CSP member report (2017-2020) highlights some of the differences from a quantitative perspective. Membership 84% England, 9% Scotland, 4% Wales, 3% Northern Ireland
Ishmael Beckford (he/him) 🇯🇲🇬🇧✊🏿 @IshmaelBeckford
4. Highlight best practice examples of NHS/Private sector collaboration 5. Balance out NHScentric elements to CSP output – equitably showcase the best of all sectors #physiotalk
Ishmael Beckford (he/him) 🇯🇲🇬🇧✊🏿 @IshmaelBeckford
1. Work to clarify the independent sectors relationship with the CSP 2. Build bridges/further develop relationships with the existing independent sector bodies and groups that are doing good work already e.g. @PhysioFirstC 3. Reduce NHS Vs. Private sector rhetoric #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
#physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@GemPhysioHealth @JanetThomas47 #Physiotalk Great hashtagging there Gemma. Good idea to put the hashtag at the start of your tweet #Physiotalk
Gemma Scott @GemPhysioHealth
@JanetThomas47 @physiotalk #physiotalk #CSP4fairpay #withNHSStaff recognises the complex political differences in each nation. While Scottish CSP members chose to accept a 4% payrise, Welsh, NI and English members are still subject to ongoing discussion with the Pay Review Board.
Justine Greaves ( Croxton ) @Jusgreaves28
@physiotalk The same as the band 4s I worked with, a specialist course once in post and a degree normally in sports science and supervision . they probably have less responsibility as a NHS Band 4 as patients potentially unwell #physiotalk
Philippa Leishman @Leishm1Philippa
@OllieCoburnGSR @physiotalk @Jusgreaves28 @BASRaTorg I definitely think there is opportunity for some role development here, joint job roles etc. Under-utilised resource I feel - just need the time to try and think about how to do it! #physiotalk

physiotalk @physiotalk
Q: How will you ensure that the CSP promotes the value of the NHS? #physiotalk
Gemma Scott @GemPhysioHealth
@JanetThomas47 @physiotalk #physiotalk Mat Hancock, Humza Yousaf, Eluned Morgan and Robin Swann are all quite different Health Ministers . Quite a challenge.
julia_tabrah @julia_tabrah
@physiotalk CSP council need to create better links with the private sector networks, inviting more private physio staff to the table, actively involve them with policy and decision making and include them in promotional comms in frontline and external media. #physiotalk
HCPG @HCPG_Compliance
1. So many things that cross sector collaboration could benefit from. The different ways of working, The best practice pathways that exist. The challenges and shared frustrations. #physiotalk
Ishmael Beckford (he/him) 🇯🇲🇬🇧✊🏿 @IshmaelBeckford
Promoting the private sector also needs to be about fully acknowledging the challenges many faced during COVID, this didn't get enough air time - many lost businesses, faced redundancy and still now lack full work security. We need to present a fair picture. #physiotalk
HCPG @HCPG_Compliance
2. we are all one profession that should be in this and learn from each other, we just need to work out a more efficient way to do this and enhance the whole profession. #physiotalk
Ollie Coburn @OllieCoburnGSR
@Leishm1Philippa @physiotalk @Jusgreaves28 @BASRaTorg Already underway in many places. Some trusts further ahead in the process than others. Always happy to input via @BASRaTorg #physiotalk
Justine Greaves ( Croxton ) @Jusgreaves28
@physiotalk Continue to lobby government but also win support from other professional bodies . In many cases they do not understand the profession and its scope of practice #physiotalk
HCPG @HCPG_Compliance
The CSP should be promoting the values of Physiotherapy across all sectors, not just NHS. We need to agree what these wider values are and align them to those of the various sectors - this should start to faciliate a more cohesive and joined up service. #physiotalk
julia_tabrah @julia_tabrah
@physiotalk We need better representation in the national media to promote physiotherapy in all sectors. I have worked in the NHS my whole career but we need to promote our profession as a whole and show that all sectors are united #physiotalk
Gemma Scott @GemPhysioHealth
@MelroseStewart1 @physiotalk @thecsp #physiotalk Ask the members that do engage. What has allowed them to engage? Did they always engage? What has changed? What were the barriers? For those who do not - we need to make efforts to find out why. Time? Family? Work pressures? Cost? Inaccessibility?
Justine Greaves ( Croxton ) @Jusgreaves28

physiotalk @physiotalk
#physiotalk
Dr Melrose Stewart MBE @MelroseStewart1
@julia_tabrah @physiotalk #physiotalk Generally feel there has been an historic divide created by the NHS, especially in its workforce planning for the profession. This was based on creating training places to cater for the NHS only. As a profession we need to continue to vehemently counter this.
Gemma Scott @GemPhysioHealth
@julia_tabrah @MelroseStewart1 @physiotalk @thecsp #physiotalk agreed. We need to be present and accessible. Some will not have the head-space for engagement at the moment, but when they are ready the CSP needs to be there.
HCPG @HCPG_Compliance
We need to ensure what we do is better understood, particularly by the public. We are part of a wider rehabilitation service with other colleagues but often the public appear to be confused about what we do unless they have actually seen a physio. #physiotalk
Ishmael Beckford (he/him) 🇯🇲🇬🇧✊🏿 @IshmaelBeckford
@julia_tabrah @physiotalk Great point @julia_tabrah , we need to really noisy about our profession and benefit it brings and value it offers #physiotalk
Ollie Coburn @OllieCoburnGSR
@Jusgreaves28 @Leishm1Philippa @physiotalk @BASRaTorg Me to! Collab needed. We (@BASRaTorg) can do support / development from national level but they need support “on the ground” locally too. #physiotalk
Selvakumaran Loganathan. @Selva02646964
As a CSP council we need develop strategies so that our colleagues in private sector are protected from losses faced during COVID. As part of CPD we need to explore business case writing, future proofing business in a sustainable manner etc.#physiotalk

@physiotalk Start at the root cause and be working in prevention , make every contact count. Sometimes we need to signpost to other sectors and be mindful this is about the patient . Not easy for everyone addressing difficult conversations #physiotalk
HCPG @HCPG_Compliance

Core values of NHS Such as Respect and Dignity, Commitment to quality of care, Compassion, improving Lives, closely chimes with professional standards of CSP. I would ensure that these values are not diluted by external forces. #physiotalk

1. CSP needs to lead by example and embed sustainability organizationally as a strategic priority 2. We need to advocate carbon literacy amongst physio’s 3. We need to promote net zero planning #physiotalk
Ishmael Beckford (he/him) 🇯🇲🇬🇧✊🏿 @IshmaelBeckford
4. We should support members with sustainability toolkits 5. We also need to ensure that we aren’t too narrow in our thinking – our focus should be on all facets of sustainability (not just environmental) #physiotalk

@physiotalk #physiotalk by working hard to push for apprenticeship, flexible ways of working and learning and truly recognising value of B3-B5 Support workers. I started as B3, completed a work-based degree in a Trust&University. I got paid to work and learn.
HCPG @HCPG_Compliance
Sustainability needs to start with our staff, acknowledging that things over the last 18months have had a phenomenal impact and that it is unsustainable in every way from personal to financial. Then we can start on further sustainability. #physiotalk
Gemma Scott @GemPhysioHealth
@physiotalk #physiotalk Best thing I ever did! I'm so grateful to the team I worked with as a B3 for their support and encouragement. Never knew it was an option till I met them.

Sue Julians @snj_1970
@physiotalk Q1 #physiotalk the ability to listen. The desire to interact with those you aspire to represent and be an ambassador for views outwith your own experience. To be collegiate, a collaborator but an independent thinker
Sue Julians @snj_1970
@physiotalk Q2 #physiotalk ask and learn. Nobody standing for council will have knowledge of all areas, so it’s important to ask for people’s views in those areas you know less well.
Sue Julians @snj_1970
@physiotalk Q3 #physiotalk that different sectors work in silos and not together for common goals. That more time is spent measuring and recording things that do not change individual outcomes, at the expense of spending more time with patients and doing what we love.
Sue Julians @snj_1970
@physiotalk Q4 #physiotalk this is an area I know little about. However, I am fully of the belief that a service is judged from the first contact to the last, and every contributor to that journey should be treated as equally important. I would ask and find out what they need.
Sue Julians @snj_1970
@physiotalk Q5 #physiotalk I am a private practitioner. I believe that there is more that unites us than divides us, we have much to learn from NHS colleagues but an equal amount to give back. I would like to see political ideologies put to one side for the benefit of the profession.
Sue Julians @snj_1970
@physiotalk Q6 #physiotalk I would first and foremost like the CSP to promote the value of physiotherapy. We should promote quality interventions, campaign for funding in all sectors based on quality of outcomes. Rehab in particular has been underfunded in the NHS and independent sectors.
Sue Julians @snj_1970
@physiotalk Q7 #physiotalk we have to look at sources of energy consumption. E.g. why do we still use gloves and aprons in MSK? Also, telehealth uses energy, we need to discuss it. https://t.co/BcnWaUllnj
Sue Julians @snj_1970
@physiotalk Q8 #physiotalk I would like to see rehab a first line treatment for chronic conditions, rather than pharmaceuticals. I would like the AP pathway and outcome measures agreed upon, so we can develop networks and cross sector working / undergraduate training. Bridges not barriers.
physiotalk @physiotalk

@physiotalk #physiotalk this is where my passion lies. I would contribute to a structured career pathway to allow for support workers to develop clinically but also in leadership roles. To have a national competency framework for supportworkers. Promote benefits of joining the csp
Gemma Scott @GemPhysioHealth
@physiotalk #physiotalk I’m supportive of the progress made to improve engagement and communications with PhysioFirst. There are many private practitioners/ private sector physios and support workers. The CSP needs to tap in to their networking, technological and innovation skills.

@MacgCass @physiotalk #physiotalk that the NHS will be sustained. We need to continue to lobby government to support education, making Physiotherapy an attractive proposition for students so that we can continue to evolve and better serve the public.
Gemma Scott @GemPhysioHealth
