Dr Jon Room @JonRoom
@JanetThomas47 I would enjoy some rain. A lot. Witney isn’t normally know for it’s golden hills! #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Q: What is your experience, and the experience of your patients, of yoga practice? #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
pets! Meant lets!! #physiotalk
Donncha Lane (Neuro-Rehab Physiotherapist) @DonnchaLanePT
@physiotalk My experience of yoga is relatively new - about 3 years - started with Iyengar and moved quickly into Ashtanga. Mainly focus now on Ashtanga, Yin yoga and occasional Dharma yoga. #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@DonnchaLanePT Is there a great deal of difference between different types of yoga practice (you can tell I know nothing and am going to be asking the q tonight!) #physiotalk
Sally Kennedy @Sallylk
@physiotalk Having been teaching #yoga for quite a few years, I've worked in gyms, hospitals, church halls and community centres, and find that there is definitely NOT 'one size fits all' in yoga, people like/need/practice different styles #physiotalk
Donncha Lane (Neuro-Rehab Physiotherapist) @DonnchaLanePT
@physiotalk The experience of my patients is using some of the principles of yoga I’ve learned along with other neuro rehab practices (e.g. Bobath) - which have some very similar foundations in terms of movement and how its taught. #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47

Donncha Lane (Neuro-Rehab Physiotherapist) @DonnchaLanePT
@physiotalk So Yin yoga is quite different to the more dynamic yang practices of yoga. It is about long hold of postures in relatively comfortable positions - something that would be very useful for all our patients #physiotalk
Dr Jon Room @JonRoom
@JanetThomas47 Wow. That would be great! #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@Sallylk As we are not going to ask a planned question around types of yoga I wonder if is worth asking now if one type is more suited to linking with physio practice than another? #physiotalk
Donncha Lane (Neuro-Rehab Physiotherapist) @DonnchaLanePT
@physiotalk The more dynamic practices - the traditional ‘instagram’ yoga - has lots of variations depending on whats in vogue. Ashtanga is quite traditional - physically demanding and not for everyone. #physiotalk
Aimee Robson 💙 @AimeeRobson4
@physiotalk I’ve personally been doing yoga for a long time. Often if they already enjoyed, I would “talk that language” and build into treatment plan around sport needs #physiotalk

@DonnchaLanePT @physiotalk @Sallylk Similar to info in the @GeriSoc blog then really? #physiotalk https://t.co/fIljZkyjoj
Sally Kennedy @Sallylk
@physiotalk I assume that mostly people assoc the physical practice with 'exercise' and physio but I wonder if the more esoteric practices can help with physchology and mental health which we are asking later on #physiotalk
Donncha Lane (Neuro-Rehab Physiotherapist) @DonnchaLanePT
@physiotalk @Sallylk But there may be a need to explore both yin and yang types of yoga practice………#physiotalk

Q: Is yoga compatible with Physiotherapy practice? #physiotalk

Donncha Lane (Neuro-Rehab Physiotherapist) @DonnchaLanePT
@physiotalk Definitely - both the physical and non-physical components. The importance of the breath, moving easily and softly with the breath, recognising the journey - not the destination, embracing change and differences………..I could go on…..but yes. #physiotalk
Sally Kennedy @Sallylk
@physiotalk We have so many varied therapeutic tools that I cant see why yoga shouldnt be one of them if the practitioner is suitably qualified #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Is yoga compatible with physiotherapy practice? #physiotalk
Donncha Lane (Neuro-Rehab Physiotherapist) @DonnchaLanePT
@DanOsteopath @physiotalk Yes - the asana practice (position/pose) is only a small part of yoga. These poses are never truly finished or achieved - there is always room to change and explore your body further. Always adaptions and modifications available #physiotalk
Daniel Gerber @DanNotOsteopath
@physiotalk Can't answer for physiotherapy directly, but if yoga is about promotion of movement (without fear) and about fun/relaxation and lowering of stress then it's compatible with any other therapy... #physiotalk
Sally Kennedy @Sallylk
RT @physiotalk: Also look out for poll coming up! #physiotalk
Ed Sum Occupational Therapist🏳️‍🌈❤🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 @musedNeuroOT
It's taken some time for me to be open to trying yoga - now I am a strong advocate of it after 5 sessions! I think like with any intervention it has to be client-centred and a physio subjective assessment may not lend itself easily to explore yoga as an option #physiotalk https://t.co/Flv5a6HZZl
Aimee Robson 💙 @AimeeRobson4
@physiotalk 100%. I’ve advocated use for patients for diversity in exercise regime and for patients with higher anxiety and varied msk diagnoses. I’ve also had patients whose sport is yoga and they want to “return to sport” after surgery or injury #physiotalk
Sally Kennedy @Sallylk
@JonRoom I would talk to a patient who has already expressed an interest, in the same way that I would get them to focus on their own goals and aims to keep active #physiotalk
Donncha Lane (Neuro-Rehab Physiotherapist) @DonnchaLanePT
@DanOsteopath @physiotalk And its about managing the ego and being happy with where you are…..not with the body you want or yesterdays body…..in these crazy times being told to reign in the ego at yoga is refreshing! #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
supplementary: Are there any conditions that yoga is particularly suited to as a treatment approach? #physiotalk
Louise Brennan, PhD @Louise_Brennan_
@physiotalk 100%! Stretching, strengthening, learning how the body moves, enjoyable exercise, relaxation...it ticks so many boxes! It's a fantastic qtool for physios to use #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@musedNeuroOT Is there a particular reason you say that? #physiotalk
Portland Physio Team @Portland_Physio
@physiotalk #physiotalk
Donncha Lane (Neuro-Rehab Physiotherapist) @DonnchaLanePT
@physiotalk Definitely in neuro rehab - all conditions - I quite like how Mary Massery advocates the ‘if you can’t breathe you can’t function’ - which is a cornerstone of yoga - yet she’s not a yoga teacher but a PNF expert! #physiotalk
Dr Jon Room @JonRoom
@Sallylk Great. It doesn’t come up often with the people I see, but I’m wondering if that’s down to me or not. Good to reflect!#physiotalk
Daniel Gerber @DanNotOsteopath
@JonRoom I find it suits some patients because of the hate exercise/love activity. It promotes movement in a guided way. A good yogi will adapt to allow movement without fear..but trouble is they're not all good... #physiotalk

@musedNeuroOT Thanks. Good point. If it’s okay to ask, what made it difficult to being open to trying it at first? #physiotalk
Dr Jon Room @JonRoom
@physiotalk @DanOsteopath Yeah Gerbs hold that thought! #physiotalk
Daniel Gerber @DanNotOsteopath
@therhiannok @physiotalk Injury is "unfortunate", not knowing the how's or why's it hard to comment, but maybe worth finding another yogi that can grasp what you need? #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
#physiotalk https://t.co/K3uMTpujV2
Sally Kennedy @Sallylk
@AimeeRobson4 @physiotalk I agree, people who have had injury or or chronic condition diagnosis may be more reuctant to do 'traditional' sport seeing it as not for them, so any opportunity for diversity is a good thing #physiotalk
SeanAdnettPT @AdnettPt
@physiotalk I wouldn’t prescribe it as an individual treatment but supplementary to increased general exercise levels I’ve seen it work quite well with LBP patients. #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Time is marching on - next question coming up #physiotalk
Donncha Lane (Neuro-Rehab Physiotherapist) @DonnchaLanePT
@therhiannok @DanOsteopath @physiotalk Injured knees are my fear in yoga - and thankfully none to date. I think if you injured your knee you may have pushed your body too far and not used modifications enough - but I could be completely wrong #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Q: What are the potential benefits and risks of practicing yoga? #physiotalk
Louise Brennan, PhD @Louise_Brennan_
@DonnchaLanePT @physiotalk Yes, bringing awareness to breathing is so important! It helps focus on the movement and being calm throughout the exercise. #physiotalk
Donncha Lane (Neuro-Rehab Physiotherapist) @DonnchaLanePT
@AdnettPt @physiotalk Why not as an individual treatment out of interest? #physiotalk
Dr Jon Room @JonRoom
@DanOsteopath @physiotalk 🤣 that’s the trouble with a thought, once it’s out there, it’s out there... #physiotalk
Sally Kennedy @Sallylk
@DonnchaLanePT @DanOsteopath @physiotalk And 'reigning in the ego' is surely about setting realistic acheivable goals whihc of course we advcate in physiotherapy #physiotalk
Donncha Lane (Neuro-Rehab Physiotherapist) @DonnchaLanePT
@Sallylk @DanOsteopath @physiotalk Yes!! #physiotalk
Daniel Gerber @DanNotOsteopath
@Sallylk @physiotalk Some say they do, but they think of the therapist as healer, or just pay lip service to BPS models?? #physiotalk
Aimee Robson 💙 @AimeeRobson4
@physiotalk Mindfulness, body awareness, proprioception, power, mental and physical resilience, and very very importantly breath control ... too many benefits to cite! #physiotalk
Donncha Lane (Neuro-Rehab Physiotherapist) @DonnchaLanePT
@physiotalk Benefits: cardiovascular training, strengthening, stretching, relaxation, friendships, being less attached to material things Risks: Injury……….cant think of anymore #physiotalk
Dr Jon Room @JonRoom
@AdnettPt @physiotalk So would you suggest it as an activity/general exercise in addition to individualised treatment? #physiotalk
Ed Sum Occupational Therapist🏳️‍🌈❤🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 @musedNeuroOT
@physiotalk I am not an expert but the spiritual, psychological and meditative aspects may not be standard in a physiotherapy assessment but key parts of yoga - even OTs who claim to be holistic do not explore this fully. Seems like it would miss the point of the intervention #physiotalk
Sally Kennedy @Sallylk
@physiotalk And breathing, how we breathe, is connected to 'core stability' and activation of deeper musculature is often neglected in both physio and sport #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk

Louise Brennan, PhD @Louise_Brennan_
@JonRoom Rather than, say, recommend a class, what I've done is incorporate poses or movements from yoga in the pt's exercise plan - like how you might include pilates exercises. Some of those stretches are incredibly effective!! #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@musedNeuroOT Is it necessary to always tap into this or can you practice yoga purely as a movement discipline? #physiotalk
Dr Jon Room @JonRoom
@AdnettPt @physiotalk Okay. I don’t really suggest it, but I think it’s because I’ve never really done it. Sometimes pts bring it up then I go with it... #physiotalk

Sally Kennedy @Sallylk
@therhiannok @DanOsteopath @physiotalk You're right that there can be an element of comparison to others in a class situation, or even competition, but there's no substitute for working face to face with another person who can adapt as you go #physiotalk
Donncha Lane (Neuro-Rehab Physiotherapist) @DonnchaLanePT
@physiotalk @musedNeuroOT Most people consider yoga from a movement and posture/asana perspective……but this is just the tip of the iceberg and the other parts of yoga are probably even more accessible to a wider population who think its all about the instragram postures! #physiotalk
Aimee Robson 💙 @AimeeRobson4
@physiotalk Patients with pain +\- anxiety, “taking control back” of their breath both feels internalising of locust of control and concurrently regulates resp rate during exercise and out of exercise/“in life” #physiotalk

RT @VictoriaHatha: @physiotalk Practice first! If you are going teach/recommend yoga you need to understand it first #physiotalk

@physiotalk I would find out first about the practice and maybe go along to a class to get a peronal experience..then again I haven't experienced all the interventions I recommend to my patients so not sure why I say this about yoga?? #physiotalk

That's the hour up! Thanks all for taking part - some very insightful comments! #physiotalk

@AimeeRobson4 @Sallylk @NaomiMcVey @DonnchaLanePT @physiotalk So true! The same could be said for weight training, running, etc - the more kinds of exercise we're familiar with as physios, the more we can help our pts identify the right kind of exercise for them 🙏 🏋️🏌️🏊 #physiotalk

@physiotalk Movement is what’s important. If you want to use yoga, use yoga, but if you have alternatives, don’t stress it... yoga also isn’t a thing. It’s like the patient who says i’ve Had osteopathy/physiotherapy..what do they mean? #physiotalk

@JonRoom Because I do not see it as exercise! The self-growth aspect of my interests is a key motivator. I am not aiming for anything with my yoga but on a continual journey with lots of benefits along the way - martial arts are my second choice of 'exercise' #physiotalk
Louise Brennan, PhD @Louise_Brennan_
@physiotalk @Sallylk Thanks all, that was really interesting! 😁 #physiotalk

Our next #physiotalk is in a fortnight and we'll be looking at 'Preparing a poster' ahead of #physio18 (And any other conferences as well of course!)
Unity Physiotherapy & Wellbeing @UnityPhysio
@physiotalk I’ve practiced yoga daily (not always on the mat) for 5 years, predominantly Hatha based. Integrate into practice from two physio led weekend courses. Lots of great physios that are yoga teachers to follow @proskoyoga @lifeisnow1 @ProYogaTherapy @Yoga_Physio #physiotalk
Sally Kennedy @Sallylk
@DanOsteopath @physiotalk Another good point..yoga is something you experience and practice, but isn't that the same as all our physio / therapy practice? #physiotalk

@musedNeuroOT Sounds like the continual journey is a good aim in itself, even if we would not call it an aim. Sounds great, hope it continues to be useful/enjoyable/helpful. #physiotalk
