physiotalk @physiotalk
Good evening and welcome to tonights #physiotalk tweet chat on your professional body and you
physiotalk @physiotalk
We decided to hold this chat after only 7.3% of members took part in the recent @thecsp council elections- and we wondered why the lack of engagement! #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
We re going to start off with a couple of polls tonight BUT before we do - a chance to say hello and let us know if you are taking part tonight #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
A reminder of how to tweetchat 1: Search for tweets with the #physiotalk hashtag 2: Reply to tweets using the #physiotalk hashtag as well 3: So ALL your tweets need to have the #physiotalk hashtag in!
Lynne Mann @lynnemann13
@physiotalk #physiotalk taking part from cloudy Dumfries and Galloway
ThePhysioBack @physio_back
@physiotalk Hi #physiotalk. David in Bournemouth here. NQ Physio.
Kathleen Tan 🏳️‍🌈💜 @Kathleen_physio
@physiotalk Hello! I'm a new CSP Steward in Grampian. Might be dipping in and out tonight but excited to see people's response on this topic! #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@lynnemann13 Welcome! #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@physio_back Welcome! #physiotalk
Gemma Hawtin 💙 @gvhawtin
@physiotalk #Physiotalk Gemma a Physio Assistant from Leeds 👋🏻
physiotalk @physiotalk
@Kathleen_physio So are we! Thanks for taking part #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@gvhawtin Welcome! #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
So - the first of a couple of polls coming up to get us started tonight #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
POLL: Are you a member of your professional body? #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
POLL: Did you vote in the recent CSP council elections? #physiotalk
Joanna Cavill @JoannaCavill
@physiotalk Hello, I'm a physio working in LD services in Mid Devon #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@JoannaCavill Welcome! #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
I'm on the @physiotalk account tonight from Edinburgh #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Keep going with the polls - they are only open for the hour of #physiotalk tonight. But here is the first discussion question
physiotalk @physiotalk
Q: How important is it for you to engage with your professional body? #physiotalk
Gemma Hawtin 💙 @gvhawtin
Tweetchat tonight #AHPSupportWorkers feel free to take part
BHJ Respiratory @BhjRespiratory
@physiotalk #physiotalk late to the party again (becoming a habit), in Derby, multi tasking as I’m doing the big shop too
Lynne Mann @lynnemann13
@physiotalk #physiotalk I think engaging is important and thoughtful how engaging could be made more accessible and benefits shared
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@physiotalk For me - its important. We are the CSP (which I suppose for most of us tonight is our professional body!) and its important that we interact. #physiotalk
Gemma Hawtin 💙 @gvhawtin
@physiotalk #Physiotalk I’ve only been a member for 2 years &they have been great. Lots of CPD & networking just some of the things I’ve done so far. Managed to speak at VPUK about leadership for them too. Opens doors. 👀 forward to VPUK later this year. #AHPSupportWorker @chris_richards2
physiotalk @physiotalk
@BhjRespiratory That is multitasking! Online or in person? (and I'm really impressed if you are in the actual shop!) #physiotalk
ThePhysioBack @physio_back
@physiotalk I have always felt it was important as there is strength in numbers on important topics. This helps improve conditions for all #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@gvhawtin @chris_richards2 Do you think its more or less important for support workers to join? #physiotalk
Kathleen Tan 🏳️‍🌈💜 @Kathleen_physio
@physiotalk #physiotalk I think it is important for me for the learning and networking opportunities. You're also able to support others and get support when needed too.
physiotalk @physiotalk
@physio_back So the 'voice' that a professional body can give is important? #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@Kathleen_physio Yes - its a two way process isn't it! More of that in some later questions :) #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
RT @physiotalk: Q: How important is it for you to engage with your professional body? #physiotalk
Lynne Mann @lynnemann13
@physiotalk #physiotalk the mentorship programme has been extremely helpful and I have been a member since 2003 and only accessed this in 2021
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
RT @physiotalk: Q: How important is it for you to engage with your professional body? #physiotalk
Gemma Hawtin 💙 @gvhawtin
@physiotalk @chris_richards2 More ++++++ before I didn’t know about the reference group, VPUK all the CPD then advisors who help you massively plus the networking and development to go further. #Physiotalk opportunity’s are endless and I feel valued & supported @ClaireFordham5
physiotalk @physiotalk
@lynnemann13 So is the range of 'benefits' important I wonder? #physiotalk
Kathleen Tan 🏳️‍🌈💜 @Kathleen_physio
@physiotalk @gvhawtin @chris_richards2 #physiotalk absolutely more! We have our networks of managers and colleagues for support but often support workers are more isolated from peer support or escalating issues
ThePhysioBack @physio_back
@physiotalk That's one aspect, the union side, with support. Then there is working to move the profession in a positive direction. And the CPD/professional development side #physiotalk
Chris Richards 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 @chris_richards2
@physiotalk @gvhawtin Well given that 60% of hands on physiotherapy is done by support workers I'd say it's very important and the CSP do an amazing job in representing us #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@gvhawtin @chris_richards2 @ClaireFordham5 That's great to hear! (And @ClaireFordham5 is fantastic!) #physiotalk
Kathleen Tan 🏳️‍🌈💜 @Kathleen_physio
@gvhawtin @physiotalk @chris_richards2 @ClaireFordham5 #physiotalk do you often need to explain to other support workers the benefits of being a member or even just being active in learning & non-clinical side of things?
Chris Richards 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 @chris_richards2
@gvhawtin @physiotalk @ClaireFordham5 Thank you Gemma it's amazing being part of a network of support workers #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
RT @Kathleen_physio: @gvhawtin @physiotalk @chris_richards2 @ClaireFordham5 #physiotalk do you often need to explain to other support worke…
physiotalk @physiotalk
Time to head to our next question #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Q: Do you feel that your professional body represents you? Whether member, associate, student, retired... #physiotalk
Chris Richards 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 @chris_richards2
@physiotalk It's extremely important to engage with members that way you feel valued and supported and from a support worker point of view I think the CSP does a fantastic job particularly since starting the support worker reference group. A huge thank you to @ClaireFordham5 #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
RT @physiotalk: POLL: Are you a member of your professional body? #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
RT @physiotalk: POLL: Did you vote in the recent CSP council elections? #physiotalk
Gemma Hawtin 💙 @gvhawtin
@Kathleen_physio @physiotalk @chris_richards2 @ClaireFordham5 Yes I’ve tried to tell support workers the benefit of being part of the CSP then it’s up-to them after that. Said it over and over since joining but still me only part of the CSP. #Physiotalk the community is great and met lots of nee people from VPUK which I hope to meet again
Carla Ellis @carlatrottellis
@physiotalk #physiotalk important but not often urgent therefore can get lost in a busy day/week
Liz Cowan, Cheshire Children’s Physio (She/her) @liziophysio1
@physiotalk #physiotalk When I worked in the NHS I took the support for granted. Now as an independent practitioner I feel less supported. In the recent elections there were some private practitioners elected, that may make a difference.
Chris Richards 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 @chris_richards2
@Kathleen_physio @gvhawtin @physiotalk @ClaireFordham5 Absolutely it's important to give other support workers direction in what is put there for support workers and the CSP cpd as well as explanation on the role is the best place to go #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@chris_richards2 @physiotalk @ClaireFordham5 Yes. It was fantastic being part of the support workers film - even though I'm not a great fan of being filmed! Important to showcase physiotherapy SW #physiotalk
CSPDisAbility @cspdisability
RT @physiotalk: Q: Do you feel that your professional body represents you? Whether member, associate, student, retired... #physiotalk
Kathleen Tan 🏳️‍🌈💜 @Kathleen_physio
@chris_richards2 @gvhawtin @physiotalk @ClaireFordham5 #physiotalk I do that too but achieved no success, will keep promoting to every support worker I come across tho!
Gemma Hawtin 💙 @gvhawtin
@physiotalk Very much so #Physiotalk has helped me to progress and be part of a community across the country supporting each other
physiotalk @physiotalk
@liziophysio1 Do you think the new council makes it more difficult for your 'voice' to be heard? There was always a private practitioner on council in the old structure for example? Or can anyone represent views as long as they take time to listen? #physiotalk
ThePhysioBack @physio_back
@physiotalk Yes. I feel the CSP is aspirational. I feel it wants to do the best for it's members. #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@physiotalk Yes, I think it does. But I do take the time to ensure they know my views - I always do any surveys etc for example to make sure my view is heard and represented #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
RT @physio_back: @physiotalk Yes. I feel the CSP is aspirational. I feel it wants to do the best for it's members. #physiotalk
Chris Richards 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 @chris_richards2
@physiotalk 100% from an associate point of view having the support worker reference group and the support worker webinar series I have been able to develop phenomenally and I look forward to what develops from this the future is looking good for support workers #physiotalk
Carla Ellis @carlatrottellis
@physiotalk #physiotalk yes but then I do engage and so may be more likely to see the benefits. As ever, it’s getting the views of people who don’t engage that is most important and constructive
physiotalk @physiotalk
@nickyp_physio Hi I missed your tweet earlier as it didn't have #physiotalk in. Please include the hashtag so that we can follow your tweets and the conversation! Thanks
Chris Richards 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 @chris_richards2
@JanetThomas47 @physiotalk @ClaireFordham5 That is so great to hear and thank you for being part of that film it was fantastic #physiotalk
Chris Richards 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 @chris_richards2
@Kathleen_physio @gvhawtin @physiotalk @ClaireFordham5 All we can do is promote the way but at the end it will be up to the individual I personally find it very important. Thank you for promoting this in your area to SW #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
The next question is linked to the last... But different :) #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Q: Is it important that the CSP council represents your views? #physiotalk
Liz Cowan, Cheshire Children’s Physio (She/her) @liziophysio1
@physiotalk in a recent media interview alex Mackenzie acknowledged that some within the CSP do not feel there is a place for private healthcare. With those views people can not properly represent the private sector. #physiotalk
Chris Richards 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 @chris_richards2
@physiotalk Sorry a little late in Chris - physiotherapy technical instructor acute and community physiotherapy based in mid Wales working for hywel dda #physiotalk
Chris Richards 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 @chris_richards2
@physiotalk Absolutely we vote for a council to represent our values and stand up for those there are many different areas in physiotherapy which is why it's important to have a diverse council with a range of different specialities #physiotalk
Glyn Blakey @saeboukglyn
RT @physiotalk: Good evening and welcome to tonights #physiotalk tweet chat on your professional body and you
physiotalk @physiotalk
@chris_richards2 Certainly not too late! And a wonderful part of the world to work in - Croeso! #physiotalk
Lynne Mann @lynnemann13
@physiotalk #physiotalk I think it is important but coming back to the two way conversation how to council ensure they know your views and how are members encouraged to share their views
Carla Ellis @carlatrottellis
@physiotalk #physiotalk of course, if you don’t see yourself (& your views) reflected in your governing body then you are less likely to feel included and represented
Gemma Hawtin 💙 @gvhawtin
@physiotalk #physiotalk it’s important that the CSP council represents all our views and I’m sure the reference group would want this too. Let’s keep momentum going and hopefully an associate member will be on there #AHPSupportWorker
BHJ Respiratory @BhjRespiratory
@physiotalk #physiotalk actual shop with a 6 year old too
physiotalk @physiotalk
@lynnemann13 Two way is really important But is it really two way if only 7.3% of people vote?? #physiotalk

@physiotalk Diolch 😊🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 #physiotalk
Liz Cowan, Cheshire Children’s Physio (She/her) @liziophysio1
@physiotalk I think it is important that they fairly represent the workforce. With equal emphasis being placed on each part of the membership, whether they belong to a huge organisation or a very small one. #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@liziophysio1 And with such a large number of members working in the private and independent sector do you think that's concerning? #physiotalk
Movement maniac @PTtweets_
@physiotalk Yes. But petty politics in professional bodies damage a lot. #physiotalk
BHJ Respiratory @BhjRespiratory
@physiotalk #physiotalk it’s really important to engage with your professional body as they are the ones you will turn to in times of need. Also the only way to change things for the better is to be involved from the start
Lynne Mann @lynnemann13
@physiotalk #physiotalk agree I am surprised by the low % Something is not right?

Liz Cowan, Cheshire Children’s Physio (She/her) @liziophysio1
@physiotalk I think it is more than concerning. If you do not fundamentally believe you are there to represent all members then you should not be there. We would not accept that prejudice towards another group. #physiotalk
Chris Richards 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 @chris_richards2
@gvhawtin @physiotalk Absolutely and I was so sure it would happen this time. Next term there will be an associate member on the council we have to keep doing the amazing work we do by highlighting the importance of our roles #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@lynnemann13 When preparing for tonight I found out that its a drop from 11% last time and 25% several years ago. So the level of engagement (if voting is a marker of this) is dropping #physiotalk

@physiotalk #physiotalk interesting. Do they they have a further breakdown in types of members, is there certain groups that are no longer voting?
physiotalk @physiotalk
@BunceLaura So true! Are you gaining more of an insight on your placement as well? #physiotalk
Laura Bunce @BunceLaura
@physiotalk I am a student, and yes I think it does represent me. There are times when I think they could do more to engage students / tailor content specifically to us, but overall I feel very included #physiotalk
Chris Richards 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 @chris_richards2
@JanetThomas47 @physiotalk It certainly is #physiotalk https://t.co/yyhn00Kg0J
physiotalk @physiotalk
Onto our next question - lots to get through! #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Q: Have you ever held a position in your professional body or its networks? If so - what? #physiotalk
Laura Bunce @BunceLaura
@physiotalk I don’t really fully understand the role of the CSP council so it’s hard to answer this one. But in general, yes! #physiotalk
Lynne Mann @lynnemann13
@chris_richards2 @physiotalk I know. I am really surprised. Definitely warrants investigation. Thank you @physiotalk for the session #physiotalk
Laura Bunce @BunceLaura
@physiotalk No, but I am currently on a non-patient facing placement within @thecsp and learning so much about the organisation! It is something I would definitely like to do in the future / later in my career #physiotalk
Kathleen Tan 🏳️‍🌈💜 @Kathleen_physio
@physiotalk #physiotalk was a CSP student rep in uni and now a CSP Steward!
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@physiotalk In the professional networks - yes. Positions on @AGILECSP regional and national boards over the years, and now moved to international with @IPTOPphysio, plus alternate on the 'old' style Scotland board #physiotalk
Liz Cowan, Cheshire Children’s Physio (She/her) @liziophysio1
@physiotalk I am a committee member in The Association of Paediatric Chartered Physiotherapists, but the remit on there is more to provide education and networking opportunities than to shape policy. We do feedback to national committee etc. #physiotalk
BHJ Respiratory @BhjRespiratory
@physiotalk #physiotalk it is incredibly important that views are represented which means the council must be flexible and diverse
physiotalk @physiotalk
@Kathleen_physio Stweards and other reps are such important roles! Thank you! #physiotalk
Gemma Hawtin 💙 @gvhawtin
@physiotalk #physiotalk not held any only a couple of years in but will think about it after attending VPUK where they suggested I go for council in future as liked my views. #AHPSupportWorker finding my feet but enjoying networking across the country
physiotalk @physiotalk
@liziophysio1 I'm sure there is some policy shaping going on - will be consulted by national if specific issues arise I'm sure #physiotalk

Lynne Mann @lynnemann13
@physiotalk I have not held a role as always thought it was not for the average physio. Tonight's chat making me think and also how you engage people like me #physiotalk

Chris Richards 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 @chris_richards2
@liziophysio1 @physiotalk Oh absolutely this is the quote that reflects it perfectly #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Q: How would you like to engage with your professional body? And how would you like them to engage with YOU #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@lynnemann13 That's a really interesting thought. Surely its is exactly the 'average' physio that needs representing (and I expect you are far from that in so many ways as well) #physiotalk
Laura Bunce @BunceLaura
@physiotalk Absolutely! I’ve learnt so much about what they do, who the staff are, what changes they want to make to the physio world and resources available as a member etc! I am very grateful for the opportunities that I’ve had to learn and discover #physiotalk

Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@physiotalk I think the engagement is just fine - emails, tweets, website, Frontline - their comms are very helpful. Stewards there if I needed them And if I needed more - they are a phone or an email away! #physiotalk
Chris Richards 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 @chris_richards2
@physiotalk from an associate member they do and do this very well I don't say this purely because of the volumteer role I do but because:- the support worker webinars are famtastic Vast amount of information and learning on the website Official CSP Facebook group for AM/ SW #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk

Laura Bunce @BunceLaura
@physiotalk I think a mixed-media approach works best. Not everyone is on social media, or wants to use it for work stuff. Emails can get lost/missed, but are useful. I like the magazine as there’s always so many different stories from different sides of the profession #physiotalk

@lynnemann13 @physiotalk I felt this way when I joined the SWRG as I'd only been in a SW role a few years and thought I'm going to be among people with loads of experience in the role However we had SW from different corners with a range of experience all with passion as big as my own (1/2) #physiotalk
