physiotalk @physiotalk
Good evening and welcome to tonights #physiotalk Before we get started - the usual who is taking part hellos of course, but perhaps you could also let us know if you have been taking part in #AHPsActive
Christopher Tuckett @HealthPhysio
RT @physiotalk: TODAY! Take part in #physiotalk tweetchat on role modelling physical activity. Join in at 8.30pm https://t.co/cAkvD75nXu
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
I'm tweeting on the @physiotalk account tonight and I've certainly been trying to be #AHPsActive #physiotalk
Paula Manning Physio @Manning2Paula
#physiotalk Hello I'm here @physiotalk, and yes i've been taking part in #AHPsActive.
Christopher Tuckett @HealthPhysio
@physiotalk Good evening, my name's Chris a physio and falls practitioner. I've been taking part in #AHPsActive as well as tonight's #Physiotalk 👍
physiotalk @physiotalk
A reminder if you are taking part tonight to include #physiotalk in all of your tweets. That means we can all follow the discussion and see the tweets in the transcript. Thank you!
physiotalk @physiotalk
@Manning2Paula Welcome! #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@HealthPhysio Welcome! #physiotalk
Liz Cowan @liziophysio1
@physiotalk #physiotalk one eye on twitter and taking a turn at decorating. Liz, paeds physio in private practice in Warrington.
physiotalk @physiotalk
@liziophysio1 Tweetchat is much more fun than painting a ceiling! #physiotalk
Mari @mariand84
@physiotalk Hello #physiotalk! I am Mari from Sweden. I work as a physio in primary care. Have not taken part.
physiotalk @physiotalk
Lets get the ball rolling with our first question of the tweetchat #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Q1 Is it important for physiotherapists specifically or health care professionals generally to be active? #physiotalk
Suzanne Rastrick @SuzanneRastrick
@physiotalk Good evening @physiotalk. If those on the chat tonight are using the #AHPsActive hashtag too, they might like to post a photo with it. Just a thought 😉😉 #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
RT @physiotalk: Q1 Is it important for physiotherapists specifically or health care professionals generally to be active? #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@SuzanneRastrick And a good thought too! #physiotalk
Design Rehabilitation: #FBPE 💚 🇪🇺 Jill @wigmore_welsh
@physiotalk #physiotalk define active? There are so many variations, from Feldenkrais, yoga and Pilates to Marathons
Suzanne Rastrick @SuzanneRastrick
@physiotalk Just like I didn’t 🙄 #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@OngwenMartin Hi - if you are taking part in the tweetchat just a reminder to use the hashtag please! #physiotalk
Mari @mariand84
@SuzanneRastrick @physiotalk What does the hashtag stand for? #physiotalk
Christopher Tuckett @HealthPhysio
@physiotalk I would say it's important but not an absolute necessity. An ability to appreciate the benefits and costs of exercise and PA through direct experience will allow you to empathise with a patient more easily on the topic. #Physiotalk
Johnny Balshaw @PhysioBalshaw
The term ‘role mode’ is quite subjective, and to different people can mean different things especially in the context of #physicalactivity #physiotalk #AHPactive
Jane Reid @janerahpl
@physiotalk Personally I think that all HCPs should role model #PhysicalActivity but especially physios #physiotalk #AHPsActive
Mari @mariand84
@physiotalk I think so. It is easier to promote an active healthy lifestyle if you have one yourself. #physiotalk
Paula Manning Physio @Manning2Paula
@physiotalk I believe that this is definately the case, in whatever capacity they are able to take part with their own health taken into consideration. #physiotalk relatability may be improved when we admit that this is sometimes hard to do??
physiotalk @physiotalk
@wigmore_welsh Anything that meets the CMO activity guidelines really. Anyone think otherwise?? #physiotalk
Beth Orford @bethorford
@physiotalk We should defo be role models and give patients confidence that we Practice what we preach #physiotalk
Christopher Tuckett @HealthPhysio
@SuzanneRastrick @physiotalk Clever.....I like it! 😉 #AHPsActive My drive out of the gym today, after being physically active, I was greeted by this 🌈. #physiotalk https://t.co/5zAX7Ax2Oz
Jane Reid @janerahpl
@wigmore_welsh @physiotalk Should being #active not include all physical active from walking to marathons and everything in between? #physiotalk #AHPsActive
physiotalk @physiotalk
How do we match up the thought that its easier to promote an active lifestyle if we are active against the relatability that sometimes we might find it hard to do so? #physiotalk
Tesni 😝 @TesniST
@physiotalk Personally I feel, if you are encouraging others to participate in an active and healthy lifestyle to support a client's recovery, then you should be practicing what you preach #physiotalk
Paula Manning Physio @Manning2Paula
@physiotalk @wigmore_welsh Its interpreting that guidance into different types of activity that can be tricky when people don't do clasical exercise #loveactivityhateexercise #physiotalk
Liz Cowan @liziophysio1
@physiotalk #physiotalk I think we should role model physical activity, encourage our friends and associates to be active, and be realistic and honest when we don't manage to be as active as we might like.
Christopher Tuckett @HealthPhysio
@janerahpl @wigmore_welsh @physiotalk I think it certainly should. Whatever a person enjoys and will commit to, that's the key for me. #Physiotalk
Madelaine @mclough78
@physiotalk I think we should aim to be role models as much as we can, as this will boost the advice we give. However there will always be some area where somebody won’t role model 100% eg a smoking healthcare professional. Therefore it’s tricky to define specifically #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@Manning2Paula @wigmore_welsh What do you think of here - are you thinking of gardening, housework etc being active rather than structured exercise? #physiotalk
Christopher Tuckett @HealthPhysio
@physiotalk Knowing something and doing something are two different things, the same for us (healthcare professionals) as it is patients. This allows us to understand their frustrations and difficulties too. #Physiotalk
Design Rehabilitation: #FBPE 💚 🇪🇺 Jill @wigmore_welsh
@physiotalk @Manning2Paula Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis NEAT as it is/was nicknamed #physiotalk
Paula Manning Physio @Manning2Paula
@physiotalk @wigmore_welsh yes....quantifying that can be tricky with regards to minutes done etc, but still vital to count. People don't realise how much they could do washing a car for instance. #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@HealthPhysio And should we articulate this to our patients as well? Do we tell our patients when we are struggling to be active? #physiotalk
Claire Campbell @ClaireC_PT
@physiotalk I think the very human process of engaging in healthy behaviours, lapsing and then reconnecting with the healthy behaviours is very helpful in supporting others to make changes, having empathy, and working with barriers #physiotalk
Alice Kilby @AliceKilbyPT
@physiotalk All HCPs play a role in modelling best practice for our patients, physios in particular are well placed to model PA, ensuring that we are empowering patients with compassion and understanding of what might limit PA #physiotalk
Jane Reid @janerahpl
@HealthPhysio @physiotalk Good point and that helps our relatability too #physiotalk #AHPsActive
Liz Cowan @liziophysio1
@physiotalk #physiotalk I work with kids, when I give them "homework" or a new target I ask them to give me one too. Then when I next see them we are honest with each other with what we have achieved. Exercise does not come naturally to everybody and as physios I think we don't realise that
physiotalk @physiotalk

Tesni 😝 @TesniST
@physiotalk Every individual is different in regards to what they may find easy or hard to do, however being a positive role model and helping to overcome barriers/challenges to support those individuals is part of the role #physiotalk
Paula Manning Physio @Manning2Paula
@wigmore_welsh @physiotalk I didn't know that..thanks.#physiotalk
Aideen Larmer @AideenPhysio
@HealthPhysio @physiotalk Yes - to be able to have effective 'change discussions', being able to talk through and empathise with positives and negatives helps #physiotalk
Johnny Balshaw @PhysioBalshaw
@physiotalk It aids both Physiotherapists and health care professionals as it enables them to better understand the benefits and any possible barriers when it comes to participating in Physical activity enabling the Physio or HCP to be more empathetic towards patients #physiotalk
Christopher Tuckett @HealthPhysio
@physiotalk Yes definitely, it's about presenting a realistic viewpoint not a fake or false front to patients. Otherwise they think it's just them when they find it difficult. If they know we struggle sometimes it's freeing for them. #Physiotalk
Christopher Tuckett @HealthPhysio

Christopher Tuckett @HealthPhysio
@ClaireC_PT @physiotalk Agreed! 👍 #Physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@liziophysio1 @physiotalk Wonder what would happen if I asked my older patients to do that! Mind you one did ask today (when he was in the middle of a weights set) what I did. It was good to be able to truthfully tell him I'm off to the gym tomorrow #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
So onto our next question... #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Q2 Who are your activity role models and who do you aspire to role model to? #physiotalk
Mari @mariand84
@HealthPhysio @physiotalk Agree with this one. Sometimes it is difficult to maintaining an active lifestyle but this will only give a deeper understanding of what patients deal with #physiotalk
Design Rehabilitation: #FBPE 💚 🇪🇺 Jill @wigmore_welsh
@physiotalk #physiotalk My Mother who is 93, played tennis till age 80, still dances tango and can run across the road
Claire Campbell @ClaireC_PT
@physiotalk @HealthPhysio I do! It’s really important that patients know it’s hard to develop new habits and maintain them. Slips are normal and not a failure. It helps if the activity is something they enjoy. #physiotalk
Madelaine @mclough78
@physiotalk It’s about showing patients were human too and therefore not ‘perfect’ and not do we expect them to be that either. Activity can take many forms and it’s breaking the stigma that activity only means slogging it out in a gym, when it can in fact take many forms #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk

Liz Cowan @liziophysio1
@physiotalk #physiotalk I aspire to role model to my kids, especially in terms of what girls can do and how just because you don't like PE it doesn't mean you should rule out sport. My neighbour does not know how to sit still, I aspire to be even half as active as him.
Paula Manning Physio @Manning2Paula
@physiotalk An ex patient of mine who despite his profound physical disability, works realy hard in the gym to be a wheelchair bodybuilder. He never gives up and oozes positivity about goal setting and exercise. #physiotalk
Liz Cowan @liziophysio1
@physiotalk #physiotalk I think the #WeActiveChallenge is a real eye opener into what else there is out there, so many people doing so many different activities.
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
I often think the peoples stories shared by #parkrun are very relatable role models. Normal people making an effort to start an activity and stick with it. #physiotalk
Johnny Balshaw @PhysioBalshaw
@physiotalk Personally, role modes for me are having worked with SCI, TBI patients and seeing their determination to be active despite life changing injuries helps motivate me on days when I can’t really be bothered do any form of exercise #Physiotalk

physiotalk @physiotalk
RT @physiotalk: Q2 Who are your activity role models and who do you aspire to role model to? #physiotalk
Mari @mariand84
@physiotalk All health care professionals but especially physios since we advocate Physical activity and motion is lotion! PA is our main field what we are expert in. #physiotalk
Chloe Dooley @chloedooley99
@physiotalk Everyone’s idea of being active is different but I think it’s important for health care professionals to embody what active means to them - whether that be running a 100 miles a week or simply taking the stairs instead of the lift in work #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Lots of ideas for role models that are very relatable to every day life. Is that important? #physiotalk
Aideen Larmer @AideenPhysio
@physiotalk @HealthPhysio I'm not sure that we should, I don't think pts always want to know our imperfections specifically & can feel that you are oversimplifying their problem by replacing it with your own experiences. But I certainly think approaching it from a point of real empathy helps #physiotalk
Madelaine @mclough78
@physiotalk My patients are my role models, what they overcome and their resilience in the face of adversity is truly inspiring! I hope I’m a role@model to my boys #physiotalk
Liz Cowan @liziophysio1
@ClaireC_PT @physiotalk @HealthPhysio #physiotalk the very fact that we are physios makes people think we are active, and that somehow activity comes easier to us than them. That can already foster a them and us attitude, we need to let them know when we struggle too. There are days when even physios cant be bothered

Claire Campbell @ClaireC_PT
@physiotalk My patients for both. #physiotalk
Liz Cowan @liziophysio1
@AideenPhysio @physiotalk @HealthPhysio partially agreed. But in the context of twitter or social chatter it is okay. Not so much in an MSK treatment session. Guess it depends on the client and what you think may motivate them. #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Half way through tonights tweetchat and some good hashtagging going on! Just keep remembering to add #physiotalk to all of your tweets
Paula Manning Physio @Manning2Paula
@wigmore_welsh @physiotalk Since my illness and joint problems, i get more compliance from some of my patients about our common ankle exercises when i share some of my reduced ability with them, it should work the same with exercise #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
So onto our next question #physiotalk
PT Kids: Physio & OT @PTKidsUK
It’s impossible to ask others to do things we would be unwilling to do ourselves. I, @DanielWoodsPro, always tell the children what exercise I’ve done that day & how I found it hard. I also aspire to achieve & am involved in a good level of rugby union refereeing! #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Q3 How do we ensure activity campaigns reach beyond the already active? #physiotalk
Design Rehabilitation: #FBPE 💚 🇪🇺 Jill @wigmore_welsh
@physiotalk @liziophysio1 @ClaireC_PT @HealthPhysio #Physiotalk when I entered into my studies a criteria for entry was physical ability, hand stands, cartwheels, sports, whole person self use.
Mari @mariand84
@physiotalk I want to be a role model for my future kids. My parents and siblings are those who inspire me because I have basically grown up on XC-skiing. Loving endurance sports and an active lifestyle. #physiotalk
Aideen Larmer @AideenPhysio
@physiotalk @DrZoeWilliams Is a great example of a HCP keeping up a busy lifestyle but squeezing in physical activity too! #physiotalk
Liz Cowan @liziophysio1
@physiotalk @ClaireC_PT @HealthPhysio #physiotalk as physios can signpost to other ways of being active. My friend has recently taken up archery and in his 50s is now competing internationally. "sporty" "not sporty" labels may be given when young, or given to ourselves. We can help others to think outside the routine.
Paula Manning Physio @Manning2Paula
@physiotalk By creating lots of diffrent and relateable campaigns such as #thisgirlcan #10minutesmore #loveactivityhateexercise and on a variety of platforms, advertising etc. Keep our healthcare staff informed to deliver the messgaes on PA at scale. #physiotalk
Mari @mariand84
@physiotalk This is a difficult question. Research shows that the gap between the extremely active (Ironmans) and the sedentary ppl increase. It is difficult to reach the inactive. One idea is to lower the threshold to what PA is; gardening, biking instead of taking the car. #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@Manning2Paula Is it important to have a variety of campaigns - targeted differently? #physiotalk
Liz Cowan @liziophysio1
@physiotalk #physiotalk Take some responsibility within your own community - organise a street softball tournament, or a church walk etc
Madelaine @mclough78
@physiotalk Advertise and promote awareness in the most common places, such as schools, bus stops, pubs, supermarkets and in the media. The message needs to reach the places where everybody will generally go. #physiotalk
Paula Manning Physio @Manning2Paula
@physiotalk yes definately. More accessible that way. Health inequalities targeted too. #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@mariand84 @physiotalk Lower the threshold or be clear that PA includes a variety of different things? Taking stairs, walking to next bus stop etc etc #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Do you all have opportunities for being active in your workplaces? #physiotalk
Aideen Larmer @AideenPhysio
@physiotalk Co-design! Make activities with inactive people not just for them #physiotalk #codesign
physiotalk @physiotalk
Or indeed local activity challenges? #physiotalk
Claire Campbell @ClaireC_PT
@JanetThomas47 @mariand84 @physiotalk A lot of people believe they are not ‘exercising’ unless they are uncomfortable/ sweating/ out of breath. The #LoveActivity message is good because it encourages people to do more enjoyable activity. #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47

Q4 How do we move beyond digital activity campaigns? #physiotalk
Paula Manning Physio @Manning2Paula
@AideenPhysio @physiotalk I like that! #physiotalk
Madelaine @mclough78
@physiotalk Absolutely, but I wouldn’t say it’s advertised widely enough. Food for thought in terms of how we as physios could drive the promotion of this more #physiotalk
Jane Reid @janerahpl
@liziophysio1 @physiotalk Remembering to phrase things appropriately helps with children and adults #activity often far more acceptable than #exercise #physiotalk ##AHPsActive

@physiotalk 👍🏻 Green gym in hospital grounds and fabulous outdoor spaces. We have maps of walks around grounds for 10, 20 and 30 minutes #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
