@clairieb @ReSNetSLT #ReSNetSLT having a supportive practice educator can make such a difference can't it! So glad to hear your placement helped you know where you might want to go once you're qualified, I'm hoping as I get more placement experiences that will be the same for me🤞
Cassie G @cassiegtheslt
@ReSNetSLT I started my studies in 2019 so had one “precovid” placement, a cancelled block placement and 2x block placements during covid (2021-22). 100% Virtual placements during the height of the pandemic were challenging in terms of skill development. #ReSNetSLT
Felicity Gibbons (she/her) @Felicity_SLT
@SLT2beVicky @clairieb @ReSNetSLT #ReSNetSLT My current practice educator on my paediatric placement is really helping me to see working in this setting in a different light and how varied it can be (as someone who has very little interest in SSDs this has been so important in me not writing it off)
Vicky Marriott (she/ her) @SLT2beVicky
#ReSNetSLT on a broader scale, doing placements alongside the academic element of the course is really reassuring because sometimes you can leave a lecture feeling confused and disheartened, but then seeing in practice can act as that 'light bulb' moment

Completely agree with this - the theory seems so abstract until you can apply it to real-life clients! #ReSNetSLT

@talkrunlearn @ReSNetSLT Yes this is very relatable, understanding the logistics of a new placement can almost be as nerve-wracking as understanding all the new theory but feeling welcomed and having friendly faces around can definitely help with that #ResNetSLT #EuroSLTday

@sallymorganslt I agree with that as well, it's also easier to be interested in more abstract concepts like models etc. when you can understand how it directly relates to practice #ReSNetSLT #EuroSLT

@ReSNetSLT @SLT2beVicky @clairieb @ESLAEurope @UK_ESLA @RCSLT #ReSNetSLT Most of the theory relating to paeds so far on my course has been on Speech Sound Disorders (SSD) which is not really my passion but being able to see a client w/more language, memory needs has been really valuable to me not writing off working with this client group

I always appreciate when a PE points me towards a research paper rather than straight up answering a question, it's so much easier to understand papers and ask questions about them when they're based on real life situations #ReSNetSLT #EuroSLT

@MCAsupporttool #eurosltday #ReSNetSLT Understanding the cog-neuro model of single word processing & where/how breakdowns at various levels can affect comprehension/expression only really fell into place when I was in the on-campus aphasia clinic @SLSncl
Cassie G @cassiegtheslt
@SChalmersSLT @ReSNetSLT #ReSNetSLT #EuroSLTDay I completely agree, as we were all thrown into a new way of working and learning together, I felt that as a student I could contribute meaningfully to the creation of new online resources for PEs who’d had to adapt to so many changes to their working lives

As a student this is always a worry for me, is what I'm learning going to be relevant once I'm out in the field? Am I learning this to be able to write a good essay or to pass an exam because if so... why am I learning it? #ReSNetSLT #EuroSLTday

#ReSNetSLT, Are students and clinical educators aware of their AHP faculty and the role of faculties in student placements ?
Vicky Marriott (she/ her) @SLT2beVicky
@SChalmersSLT @NMieszkowski @ReSNetSLT I've had conversations with other students about the worry of 'burnout culture' in the profession, seeing practitioners manage this on placement is really reassuring! #ReSNetSLT #EuroSLT

@MCAsupporttool #eurosltday #ReSNetSLT I agree with Vicky - especially when not being taught by people currently in practice in NHS settings. I sometimes wonder if actually there's a limited range of interventions used by clinicians which are dictated by resources, staffing etc.

Going into my first external placement in June this year, many practitioners, especially the NQPs, have reminded me to keep an open mind and to absorb all the learning that I can! #ReSNetSLT

@clairieb @ReSNetSLT Same when I had my adult placement at @WSH_SALT - by the end I wanted to work with adults and I have been doing so for 10.5 years ♥️ #ResNetSLT

@NMieszkowski @ReSNetSLT It's really nice to hear that you see it as a two-sided relationship! It's easy to feel like a burden on your PEs sometimes #ReSNetSLT #EuroSLT
