Anita Smith @Smith8Anita I’m here too #SwallowAware2020
Anita Smith @Smith8Anita @GivingVoiceUK we developed a back to basics poster for people with difficulties eating and drinking last year. Have now developed passport which is with @RCSLT at the mo #SwallowAware2020 @ReSNetSLT
clarence @clairsbear @sallymorganslt @ReSNetSLT I worth with adults with LD therefore tend to focus on compensatory strategies too. I work in a great MDT so will often ask physio or OT to consult around positioning.#ReSNetSLT #SwallowAware2020
Anita Smith @Smith8Anita Likewise for me too- interesting as opposite ends of spectrum! In acute crisis management it’s probably more passive from patients perspective @ReSNetSLT #ResNetSLT
Anita Smith @Smith8Anita Training and on the job support is essential- the back to basics is great as a placemat! Visual reminder I hope the passport will help too#ReSNetSLT
Anita Smith @Smith8Anita Guys I need to leave the chat I’ve still got work to do re Covid 19 for the morning - I’ll catch up in a bit! Thanks for hosting #ReSNetSLT
Eve @EveG_SLT @ReSNetSLT Difficult to know! In my (limited) experience paid carers tend to more closely follow recommendations than families - do others find this? I find discussions of social/emotional implications with service users and families can help #SwallowAware2020 #ReSNeTSLT
Dora Guyatt @DoraGuyatt @ReSNetSLT Sometimes a lack of equipment on wards can result in staff not following SLT recommendations i.e. staff using tablespoons instead of teaspoons. How do we know? Tablespoons littered all over bedsides and in drinks! #ReSNetSLT #swallowaware2020
Chloe @ChloeOnSLT @ReSNetSLT 1️⃣ Lack of understanding of consequences “they’ve always coughed / choked and been ok up to now” 2️⃣ “time consuming” 3️⃣ “a treat here and there is ok” - are all common themes I see #ReSNetSLT
Eve @EveG_SLT @EllieJSLT @ReSNetSLT I think that's definitely a factor. I'd like to think we have those discussions but perhaps not doing enough if families don't feel listened to. I also wonder if there are some feelings of not wanting their family member to 'miss out', esp. at family social occasions #ReSNeTSLT
Chloe @ChloeOnSLT @ReSNetSLT Oh, and high staff turn over - sometimes carers aren’t aware recommendations are in place, which isn’t necessarily their fault / they haven’t intentionally not followed guidelines #ReSNetSLT
