Sarah, APRN @SarahKDNP Just scarfed some food and am getting comfy to chat. #TweetRN
Sarah, APRN @SarahKDNP @ModerateFERN Room service?! You definitely have it better than me at the moment. I had to do the post-12+ hour day scrounge for food. #tweetrn
NurseBananahammock @ModerateFERN @from_bedside #TweetRN Mel, ED/Critical Care Educator here! Best thing that happened in this last week was my 50th birthday!!!
NICU RN @nicunurselife @from_bedside Hey guys, Nicu rn from Ohio. I got to spend time with one of my best friends and her little man Sunday, so my week started off really well #tweetRN
Sarah, APRN @SarahKDNP I’m Sarah. I got to read for pleasure some on Sunday (not this week, but still). #TweetRN https://t.co/lPAyMcZBcm
ICU Mouse, RN @LttleMouse93 @from_bedside Mouse, ICU RN. Best thing for me in the past week was my birthday! #tweetrn
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU @from_bedside Went to a friends house over the weekend to crank on/tune up bikes, hang out in their backyard, eat good food, draw/color with their kiddos. #TweetRN
Sarah, APRN @SarahKDNP It really is the little things that mean the most. 😌 #TweetRN
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU @from_bedside Oh yeah and hi! I'm @OnlyintheICU. Been a bedside ICU RN for a bit over 6 years. Recently finished up a MSN/CNL program. Currently working as an interim ICU educator in addition to working at the bedside. #TweetRN
Sarah, APRN @SarahKDNP ICU educator is one of my dream jobs. #TweetRN
Andy @OneDayVesper @from_bedside Andy, Med-Surg Floatpool RN, had our quarterly tradition of Shake Shack Sunday with my husband. #tweetrn
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU @from_bedside The topic of tonight's @from_bedside chat is burnout but I'd like it to be different from the same old burnout discussion (mindfulness, resilience, etc). I want it to be full of ideas, inspiration & resources to keep RNs excited about the nursing profession. #TweetRN
Sarah, APRN @SarahKDNP A1: I won’t necessarily say that I’ve been burned out as much as I’ve gotten stagnant. When I was really feeling this way, I applied to DNP school and to work with the OPO. Both came through at the same time. Stagnant problem solved. 🤦🏻♀️ #TweetRN
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU @from_bedside Let's go over some definitions first. BURNOUT: "a term used since the early 1980s to describe the physical & emotional exhaustion that workers can experience when they have low job satisfaction & feel powerless & overwhelmed at work" https://t.co/wg8tGCurL1 #TweetRN
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU @from_bedside VICARIOUS TRAUMA: profound shift in world view that occurs in helping professionals when they work with clients who have experienced trauma COMPASSION FATIGUE: profound emotional and physical erosion that takes place when helpers are unable to refuel and regenerates #TweetRN
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU @from_bedside "Burnout is the extreme end of compassion fatigue (CF). Both Cf & vicarious trauma can lead to burnout. It means that symptoms have been happening on a regular basis for a long time and longer-term support will likely be necessary to recover" https://t.co/oEyLMav8DB #TweetRN
NurseBananahammock @ModerateFERN @from_bedside A1 #TweetRN I have absolutely felt that way. I would venture to guess we all have at some time or other. Have made decision to move on in past. Now, devoted to being part of the change I want in my hospital.
Sarah, APRN @SarahKDNP @nicunurselife @from_bedside Little people cuddles are the best! #tweetrn
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU @from_bedside Don't get me wrong, I love yoga. There is a place for mindfulness, resilience and work/life balance. These things are helpful for preventing and treating burnout. I just have a different angle I want to talk about burnout from tonight. #TweetRN
Sarah, APRN @SarahKDNP @mickienglert @from_bedside I’ve had those weeks where you’re just trying to make it through one day at a time. #tweetrn
NICU RN @nicunurselife @from_bedside My unit seems to have deaths in clusters and anytime one of those weeks hits, burnout runs rampant. We’re coming off of a hard week & it makes it hard to want to go in. It’s just heavy as you walk in the door and that bed is filled with another super sick baby again #a1 #tweetRN
NeuroNerd @superneuronurse @from_bedside A1 I have. I dreaded going to work. Sound silly but I stopped wearing mascara bc I never knew when I would start to cry. It felt like my manager at the time was out to get me. Time and muster’s support got me through, along with that manager finally leaving #TweetRN
ICU Mouse, RN @LttleMouse93 @from_bedside A1: A a nurse no, still in the honeymoon phase over here. My last job 100% yes. I re-evaluated my life, didn't like where it was going, dropped down to part time and went back to school for my pre reqs for nursing! #tweetrn
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU Bingo!! This is exactly what I want to talk about tonight. How do we be part of the change we want in our work environments? #TweetRN
Failing Life 𝔹𝕖𝕒𝕦𝕥𝕚𝕗𝕦𝕝𝕝𝕪 BSN, RN @Kryssicle @from_bedside #tweetrn Hey! I'm @Kryssicle I've been an RN for 5 yrs. Med tele. U.C. Psych Peds ED ED Currently contemplating cross training to ICU for a little more critical experience. Good things? I'm going to NYC at the end of the week. And I'm not working a ton this week either 😁
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU @from_bedside A1: What has contributed to me feeling burnt out is the emotional heaviness of constant exposure to pt/families worst days in their lives. Worst case scenarios being my every day work life. I found this especially difficult working in a level 2 trauma center. #TweetRN
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU @from_bedside A1: Another contribution to me feeling burnt out is constant cost cutting occurring in the hospital. Constantly being told to do more with less. This got increasingly difficult as I learned more about the US healthcare system & the amount of profits being made. #TweetRN
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU @from_bedside A1: What has helped me feel less burnt out is working less hours at the bedside, going back to school for MSN/CNL program, mindfulness practices, exercise, social activities w/ other ICU nurses, therapy, volunteer work w/ homeless population, Twitter community #TweetRN
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU @from_bedside A1: Another thing that has helped is finding ways to make a difference. Working on a quality improvement project in my ICU, coordinating union activity in the hospital, being part of the bargaining team for our contract negotiations to help our recruitment/retention. #TweetRN
Sarah, APRN @SarahKDNP @OnlyintheICU @from_bedside This is so disheartening when you see patients who need so much but can afford so little. #tweetrn
Catherine Gegaris @cgegaris1 @from_bedside A1 #TweetRN I have not experienced it ,however, have researched and spoken to nurses who have.First, what is the cause? Relaxation techniques, having a space to unwind. I had a stress room in one of the hospitals I worked in.Staff could take 10,listen to music, essential oils etc.
Registered Nurse Jobs - RNJobSite.com @RNJobSite Home Health RN - Campbell, CA in San Jose, CA California-San Francisco - #nursejobs #rnjobs #registerednurse #rn #nurseswhotweet #nursetwitter #tweetrn https://t.co/pX2EYoD2Cn
Sarah, APRN @SarahKDNP @ccardyDNP @from_bedside How I miss taking care of liver transplant patients. This would have definitely sent me spiraling into a not great place. #tweetrn
Catherine Gegaris @cgegaris1 @from_bedside #tweetRN This article is a great guide.Catherine https://t.co/Tvd3ACCZvA Good leadership is critical
Sarah, APRN @SarahKDNP @ModerateFERN @from_bedside I love this attitude and try to embody it daily. Key word: try. #tweetrn
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU Yes! Mixing up our roles I think is so valuable. I wish all bedside RNs were required to do work away from the bedside as part of their regular work hours #TweetRN
Hannah Ethridge @hannah_e21 @from_bedside Hi, I’m Hannah, a senior nursing student and passed my nursing test today with a 92! #TweetRN
nicole. @nic_brad @from_bedside Nicole, new grad RN 👋🏻 following along to look for advice to avoid burnout in my own career!! One good thing about my week so far: giant chocolate chip cookies from a bakery 😋 #TweetRN
Sarah, APRN @SarahKDNP What an amazing idea. #tweetrn
Catherine Gegaris @cgegaris1 @from_bedside #TweetRN Catherine here
Maddy, RN @nurse_maddy @from_bedside A1: in my current job (cath lab) I’ve felt less burnout from patient care and more from team dynamics and morale and feelings of powerlessness. Getting involved (i.e leading Unit Board for my department) has helped when I can see small improvements being made #TweetRN
Catherine Gegaris @cgegaris1 @from_bedside #TweetRN It is my dog's Birthday! Elvis is 13
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU @nurse_maddy @from_bedside Love it. It sometimes seems counterintuitive to put more effort in when you are feeling burnout. But getting more involved really has its benefits. #TweetRN
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU Wow this is amazing. Definitely wish my workplaces did this. #TweetRN
Jen Polo BSN,RN,OCN @jennpolo @from_bedside A1. Feel I can't put a finger on what is contributing but feel I am teetering on the burnout edge. Short staffing, sicker and sicker patients, more exhaustion, less ability to recover. #tweetRN
Sarah, APRN @SarahKDNP I assume that if you leave, it’s unpaid? But still, sometimes after experiencing that, it’s really hard to give your next patient the care and love they deserve. #TweetRN
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU @from_bedside A2: I could be better about my own communication skills. I've really enjoyed learning about TeamSTEPPS, a set of tools to help with communication and teamwork amongst healthcare workers. https://t.co/OXZaNAyK45 #TweetRN
Catherine Gegaris @cgegaris1 @from_bedside #TweetRN it can be a series of really sick patients, deaths, short staffing, the list is endless. Mangers,CNOs support your staff, role up your sleeves and pitch in.
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU @from_bedside A2: I didn't like our staffing matrices in our ICU so I kept asking questions until I learned how they came about & how to improve them. I talked to staff, esp charge RNs, summarized the problems & solutions (with the why's) & presented it to the staffing committee. #TweetRN
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU @from_bedside A2: I feel like meaningful recognition can be as little as saying "good job!" or "good catch" when you notice someone doing something right or as big as helping increase the pay scale of the RNs in your hospital. #TweetRN
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU @from_bedside A2: We can all be informal leaders in our workplaces. Be a good preceptor. Be a mentor to the new person on your unit being precepted by another person. Be the person that organizes potlucks, social events outside of work, etc. #TweetRN
People Are Wild Podcast! 😷 @peoplearewild @from_bedside A2: where I'm at right now, all the docs are super approachable for clarification of orders AND everyone keeps checking in with each other constantly. I truly feel like I'm never drowning and that's a pleasant feeling. #tweetRN
Jen Polo BSN,RN,OCN @jennpolo @from_bedside A2. I honestly look to genuinely thank or compliment the little and the big things in my co-workers. It helps me feel that I am appreciating them and when we are all feeling the stress/low morale I want them to know they are seen #TweetRN
Sarah, APRN @SarahKDNP I love this one. I try to be recognize people who have excelled or gone above and beyond, although I’ll definitely admit to being oblivious sometimes. #TweetRN
Jen Polo BSN,RN,OCN @jennpolo @peoplearewild @from_bedside true collaboration is the best - lightens everyone's load #TweetRN
Sarah, APRN @SarahKDNP I think I need to work where you do. That sounds amazing. #TweetRN
ICU Mouse, RN @LttleMouse93 @from_bedside A2 on my unit charge is constantly checking in to see if anyone needs help along with other nurses esp if they have a slower assignment. Everyone who is available helps settle new admits. Open communication is present. Some units do nurse led rounding. #tweetrn
NurseBananahammock @ModerateFERN @from_bedside A2 #TweetRN One area of focus for my current place is leadership. Got several folks in leadership who have no training in leadership, no sense of professionalism & are also overwhelmed w/expectations. Our education team is doing a lot to try to fill that gap.
Jen Polo BSN,RN,OCN @jennpolo @LttleMouse93 @from_bedside Do say more about nurse-led rounding. . .would like to understand what this looks like/means? #TweetRN
Catherine Gegaris @cgegaris1 @from_bedside #TweetRN Open this up at staff meeting, put ideas out there, list causes and come up with solutions. Create a healthy work environment.Leaders have to be open, there can be no fear of reprimand.Involve your CNS.This is a great model that we used. https://t.co/LTwLe754vJ
NICU RN @nicunurselife @from_bedside I think meaningful recognition is an area where improvement is pretty easy. I’m always good about thanking those who help me but I don’t utilize the hospital recognition program so that their managers and others can see how much of an asset they are to our team. #a2 #tweetRN
Elizabeth Grosse MSN, RN, CCRN-CMC @Beth_Grosse @from_bedside Q2: I feel skilled communications and true collaboration are the most effective things I can do. I also find that sometimes you have to look at your own behavior and recognize your contributions to a toxic work environment and do some personal tweaking #TweetRN
NurseBananahammock @ModerateFERN THIS!!! We get to create the culture we work in!
Jen Polo BSN,RN,OCN @jennpolo @TechNurseJon @OnlyintheICU My hospital allows (to certain degree) paid time for projects But this is important - I have passions but don't want to use all my "day off" recovery "working more" and never recovering from my bedside work. "#TweetRN
NeuroNerd @superneuronurse @from_bedside A2 Model the behavior that supports a great environment, be the person you would want to work with. #TweetRN
NurseBananahammock @ModerateFERN p.s. Food got here...and beer. :) This is my new good thing. #TweetRN
Tori M @AstrosNurse @from_bedside A2: I am in management and work outpatient. 50% is clinical and 50% is administration. I do my best to check in with everyone to see what I can do. I’ll heat up someone’s lunch if that will help. If someone wants to just vent they are free to do so. #tweetrn
Catherine Gegaris @cgegaris1 @from_bedside #TweetRN Involve physicians. I developed a model when I was a CNO in SC.Each unit had 1 or 2 physicians that were indierct leaders with the CNS/staff and manager. They came up with creative ideas to support each other. They were burning out too .EHR was a big factor.
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU @from_bedside A3: I have found volunteer work incredibly rewarding. I help out with a local organization that provides assistance to individuals struggling with homelessness in my community. Without the constraints of work rules, I can be the nurse I truly want to be. #TweetRN
Jen Polo BSN,RN,OCN @jennpolo @OnlyintheICU @TechNurseJon And there needs to be room for these interests/projects to not just conform to the normed unit committees (falls, CAUTI, CLABSI. . ) We need to be allowed to innovate, research and think big. #tweetRN
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU @from_bedside A3: "The social contact aspect of helping and working with others can have a profound effect on your overall psychological well-being. Nothing relieves stress better than a meaningful connection to another person" https://t.co/aNHvk6ottT #TweetRN
Dorothy Pietrowski @spinemama @from_bedside Oh hey! Dorothy, Orthopaedic NP in Chicagoland. The best part of my week is finishing clinic in time to have dinner with the fam. 😘 #tweetrn
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU @from_bedside A3: Something I've heard about but haven't done are deployments with RN Response Network. https://t.co/c4zjb1fmQR #TweetRN
Andy @OneDayVesper @from_bedside #tweetrn I have actually been thinking about this, volunteering, even if it isn’t using my nursing skills. Something to help me feel like I have purpose beyond the hospital.
ICU Mouse, RN @LttleMouse93 @from_bedside A3 I love working with students! They're so excited about anything and everything that it makes me happy to see the same light I had just a few months ago about giving meds down an NG! I volunteer at my nursing school to keep helping and giving back #tweetrn
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU @from_bedside A3: A friend of mine has volunteered with Mercy Ships https://t.co/VJQgbrI88e #TweetRN
NeuroNerd @superneuronurse @from_bedside A3 I love learning new things and then informally passing on what I learn to others. When they come to me one on one, I truly enjoy that interaction, like I’m making a difference for the pt and that nurse. #TweetRN
Maddy, RN @nurse_maddy @from_bedside A3: I love having new grads shadow me in the cath lab - their enthusiasm helps me remember how cool my job can be! I’ve also enjoyed precepting for the first time this fall - it’s switched up my routines and challenged me to hold myself to the highest standards #tweetRN
NurseBananahammock @ModerateFERN @from_bedside A3 #TweetRN For me, it's actually doing bedside care that keeps me from burnout. I love being an educator but I was meant to be a nurse. Not even kidding, answering a pt's call light today & then helping to clean & reposition her healed my soul.
Catherine Gegaris @cgegaris1 @from_bedside #TweetRN-so this will sound crazy..Parish Nursing. I am the Director of our Congregational Care Team and I am going to start a Parish Nurse program. Great satisfaction esp. when you are about 10 years from retiring.
ICU Mouse, RN @LttleMouse93 @ModerateFERN @from_bedside When I was a tech sometimes I just needed to take a break and give a patient a real good soap and water bath, powder, lotion, even wash and come their hair. The little things can have the biggest effect on our hearts. #tweetrn
NICU RN @nicunurselife @from_bedside We have a local safe sleep group that allows nurses to educate the public. But I’ve found that what makes me love my job more is doing things completely unrelated to nursing in my time off. I like to volunteer, but with animals & children, not as a nurse educator. #a3 #tweetRN
Kyle Pendragon, BSN, RN, CEN, CPEN @EDNerdKyle @from_bedside A1: honestly, I think the biggest contributor to nursing burnout is working too much-- either too many shifts in a row or overtime. 12 straight hours of bedside nursing is a lot physically + emotionally, doing it over and over is rough #tweetRN #nursetwitter
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU Love this. I have a friend that started volunteering at the local animal shelter and to be honest, I'm jealous. #TweetRN
Hannah Ethridge @hannah_e21 One of the reasons why I love following her on IG too!! 💗
NeuroNerd @superneuronurse @from_bedside A4 I haven’t really given this much thought, but I will. #TweetRN
Dorothy Pietrowski @spinemama @from_bedside I volunteer at a horse ranch that provides equine therapy to kiddos. It’s good for my soul. #thelegacyranch #tweetrn
Maddy, RN @nurse_maddy @from_bedside A4: honestly I don’t even know where to start. I keep telling myself I’m too young/inexperienced/introverted for my voice to be heard #tweetRN
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU @from_bedside A4: At this past NTI in Orlando, I found out about this Nurse in Washington Internship: https://t.co/p3aU4mR5g0 and that @AACNme has scholarships to help nurses do things like this #TweetRN
NICU RN @nicunurselife @from_bedside I haven’t been involved and I’m not sure that I want to at this point in my life. I’m still so inexperienced in the grand scheme of things. I feel like I need more time & experience to be able to effectively shape policy. But in a few years, it could be amazing. #a4 #tweetRN
Catherine Gegaris @cgegaris1 @from_bedside #TweetRN.In the day, a friend and I started a AACN Chapter, that was in 1980s and it is still going strong. There are a lot of opportunities,AACN you have to be given time from work to participate.ANA may have some opportunities.
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU @from_bedside @AACNme A4: Here's link to scholarship info from @AACNme: https://t.co/71Tc4Xp4MT #TweetRN
ICU Mouse, RN @LttleMouse93 @from_bedside A4 this is something I haven't even begin to think about yet as I'm still discovering my opinions on policies and what I would like to see change. #TweetRN
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU @from_bedside @AACNme A4: @AACNme also has policy and advocacy work they do and I'm sure they are always looking for more nurses to help! One way would be to look up getting involved with your local chapter. #TweetRN https://t.co/XtRmcfwOrL
Jen Polo BSN,RN,OCN @jennpolo @OnlyintheICU @TechNurseJon We get paid for time at Shared Governance meetings and some committees/mtgs but that is on top of your 12 hr shifts so can be a drain on your "me time" esp. when involves another commute to the hospital #TweetRN
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU @from_bedside @AACNme The largest nurses union in the US @NationalNurses has many things they are working on: patient ratios, workplace violence, etc. and are always looking for more RNs to help https://t.co/hKBuaS4psU #TweetRN
Matt White @MattWhite_95 This! I wish hospitals would pay for bedside nurses to be involved in research and leadership
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU @from_bedside A4: For me, I have been taking classes about Medicare for All and how to talk to the public and media about it. I also started doing canvassing work for Bernie Sanders in my community. #TweetRN
Catherine Gegaris @cgegaris1 @OnlyintheICU @from_bedside #TweetRN Great Topic Hre is one resource on Parish Nursing. There are many models. Keep your passion blooming dear nurses. Catherine https://t.co/2Ycx0VReZY
Jen Polo BSN,RN,OCN @jennpolo @from_bedside A4. As an aside, many orgs like state nursing, ANA, prof orgs are looking for younger gen RNs to help lead but less and less newer RNs joining or finding value in prof. orgs. Maybe a topic for a @from_bedside future chat #TweetRN
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU @from_bedside A4: I also have been finding local political groups I align with and seeing if they have healthcare subcommittees I can join. #TweetRN
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU @from_bedside Thank you @reepRN! I still have so many tweets to still go through and comment on. We had so many good conversations going! That hour sure goes by fast. Thanks so much for hosting! #TweetRN
Catherine Gegaris @cgegaris1 @queenofironyRN @from_bedside #TweetRN Bravo, once your find your voice, it will grow stronger and so will your confidence.Great dreams..keep learning,be a sponge!!!!
groove operator @branqueeno @from_bedside I want to enhance healthcare equity and focus preventative care, currently getting my MS Nursing/ Public health to learn the tools to do so :) #TweetRN
Nurse Savage @OnlyintheICU I feel like an hour has never gone by so fast! I had so much fun prepping for and helping host this weeks @from_bedside #TweetRN chat. So many great conversations. I can tell we still have so much more to brainstorm, share and talk about. Love this community. Thanks folks!
Safe_Staffing_Saves_Lives @TakeNoShitNurse @from_bedside A1: incivility and difficult coworkers have contributed to my burn out. I'd like to see education/training programs and conflict resolution protocol for managing and decreasing incivility in the healthcare team. #TweetRN
Katie Kerila @katiekerila RT @OnlyintheICU: @from_bedside A1: @from_bedside A1: What has contributed to me feeling burnt out is the emotional heaviness of constant exposure to pt/families worst days in their lives. Worst case scenarios being my every day work life. I found this especially difficult working in a level 2 trauma center. #TweetRN
NurseBananahammock @ModerateFERN This was so great! Thanks! #TweetRN
Jen Polo BSN,RN,OCN @jennpolo Well, this oughta be a good one #TweetRN Mon 11/18 @ 9 EST
Safe_Staffing_Saves_Lives @TakeNoShitNurse @from_bedside A2: There are small acts of civility that I can contribute to my team every day to help increase morale and positivity. Just smiling or showing kindness is effective. #TweetRN
