This #autchat is on language preferences for describing ourselves with respect to disability (for example, “person with a disability” versus “disabled person”). Preferences can be contentious and personal.

Preferences vary. Example: for autism, in a 2015 UK survey, when asked to choose ONE term to describe *themselves*: ~1/4 chose “autistic” or “autistic person” ~1/4 chose “has” or “person with” language ~1/5 chose “on the autism spectrum” https://t.co/DibvsYoVpE #autchat

Thanks to @flowerqueers for writing today's questions! Q0: Introduce yourself! Say anything you like about yourself or your interest in #autchat or in today's topic: language preferences.

Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
Hello! I am Solveig! 😸 I am autistic and I am disabled. I like identity first language because these aspects of me are not shameful at all. They're part of who I am. #autchat https://t.co/uSlOeJXZcy
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
@flowerqueers Q1: What are your language preferences when it comes to autism/similar neurodivergences? E.g., autistic, person with autism, something else? Why do you prefer that? #autchat
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
Addendum to A0 -- My name is Solveig and my pronouns are they/them! #autchat
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
@diabeticrhythm "Language preferences" here means what you prefer to be called with respect to autism, or some other neurodivergence. Like "autistic person" versus "person with autism" or "on the spectrum" or something else. #autchat
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
I prefer identity first language because it is part of who I am. I feel like person first language is problematic. 1) It tends to distance me from my autism because people think my autism is shameful. It's not. 2) Folks have to remind themselves that I'm a person. #autchat A1 https://t.co/TQqSPOFGat
Autistictalk @aspergirltalk
A1: I call myself autistic and on the spectrum. When first dxed I used Aspie because I didn’t know enough about diversity on the spectrum and how functioning levels are really a misnomer. 1/ #autchat
elemental1025 @elemental1025
@autchatmod @flowerqueers A1: I am autistic. It's the only term and phrase I have ever identified with. #autchat
Autistictalk @aspergirltalk
A1 contd: Terms associated w Aspergers feel inappropriate, short sighted and exclusionist to me now. 2/2 #autchat
Autistictalk @aspergirltalk
I don’t take it personally when people say "has autism" but try not to use it because I do agree that it makes it feel negative if you think about it. #autchat
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Q2: If you have other disabilities/are disabled in other ways, do you have language preferences for those? What are they? #autchat
Autistictalk @aspergirltalk
A2: I have social anxiety disorder. Not sure how else to describe that except maybe social phobic. #autchat
elemental1025 @elemental1025
@autchatmod A2: I have other disabilities but they are generally things that aren't apparent unless I disclose them. And I generally don't disclose them so I don't have a term for them. #autchat
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
Okay I need to say this. When I say that I'm autistic or talk about autistic people, and someone chimes in with "No, don't say autistic -- be respectful and say "has autism" -- that makes me really mad!!! #autchat A1
Autistictalk @aspergirltalk
When talking to NTs I usually say I’m on the autism spectrum because I think it invites them to think of autism as diverse and less associated with media biases. #autchat
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
A2 I tend to use identity first language. I'm dyspraxic. I'm dysgraphic. My disabilities go a long way towards defining me as a person, and therefore it's part of my identity. #autchat A2 https://t.co/NZk3jThcHQ
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
Hey @autchatmod -- how does the storify stuff work? Do you archive things only within the official hour, or do you stretch it out to include people who join in later? #autchat
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Re storifying, we include whatever's been said on the tag (related to the chat topic) by the time we do the actual storify, usually on Thursday or Friday. (Exception: People who've been asked to not be included in storifies) #autchat https://t.co/ixhQ9qRPuG
CLE change the world @Bluebirdlouise
ooh i’m missing #autchat
Autistictalk @aspergirltalk
I say I have auditory processing problems. I’m not sure if it’s bad enough to be clinical now,, although when I was born they thought I was deaf. #autchat
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
As a side note, we've located an alternative to Storify (Wakelet) and will be using that from this week onward, since Storify is closing down. It works basically the same as Storify. #autchat
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Q3: Do you think your language preferences are relatively similar to other people in your community (or communities)? If they differ, how so? Do you have any thoughts on why? #autchat
Autistictalk @aspergirltalk
I have trouble knowing left from right, but I don’t know if there’s a term for that. #autchat
Autistictalk @aspergirltalk
A3: The only autistic people I know except hubby and daughter are people on twitter. My daughter has actually corrected me with “has autism” because she’s studying psychology and music therapy and that’s what they teach. 1/ #autchat
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
Something else I've been thinking with respect to A2 is that I really dislike it when people try to make euphemisms to avoid saying autistic or disabled. So with this in mind, I have negative reflexes when people say I'm "on the spectrum" -- I prefer "autistic." #autchat
elemental1025 @elemental1025
@autchatmod A3: There is variety within my community but majority do id similar to how I do, but I always respect individual preferences. #autchat
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Q4: How do you react when someone uses the wrong terminology for you? Do you correct them? If you correct them, how do you approach that? #autchat
Autistictalk @aspergirltalk
She doesn’t know I got my dx. She won’t discuss us being on spectrum because she fears being kicked out of university program if she goes down that path. She has not been dx. I respect her wishes. #autchat
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
@aspergirltalk Ah yes, that's something I don't know how to say with IFL. I say "I have an auditory processing disorder" and leave it at that. #autchat
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
I don't know very many autistic adults offline, so honestly I don't know. I wasn't able to proudly identify as "autistic" until I met other autistic self advocates and felt comfortable doing it. I always wanted to. I just... couldn't. #autchat A3 https://t.co/LhC1JtxUwG
Autistictalk @aspergirltalk
@autchatmod A4: I only mind if they are correcting my language, which is beyond presumptuous. If they say I have autism I’m okay with it. I’m not a "word” person as much as a visual person. I use terms like “thingy” all the time because I don’t spend time remembering correct terms. #autchat
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
I would also say that for the longest time, allistics would somehow use whatever PFL term was in fashion at the time, be it "has/with autism" or "on the spectrum" Now that I have started using IFL and calling myself autistic, they're following suit. #autchat A3

RT @autisticb4mmr: Okay I need to say this. When I say that I'm autistic or talk about autistic people, and someone chimes in with "No, don't say autistic -- be respectful and say "has autism" -- that makes me really mad!!! #autchat A1
elemental1025 @elemental1025
@autchatmod A4: Doesn't/hasn't come up, I've only told a couple of ppl & it's not something they bring up or ask questions about. #autchat
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
@euan_burns @autchatmod Really, there's a lot of meaning attached to the specific words we use. I think there's a bunch of allistics who are trying to be respectful of our needs, but many of them just get it really really wrong. #autchat
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
@euan_burns @autchatmod I get really anxious because sometimes I think that allistics are embarrassed by the fact that I'm autistic, and want to minimize it because they see it as a negative thing. They want to focus on the other parts of my life and make me hide my autism. That feels awful #autchat
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
@euan_burns @autchatmod I am teaching myself to respect my whole self, which includes my disabled and autistic parts too. It is a core part of my identity. It is hard to understand if you're allistic. But getting to that point is really helpful for us, I think. #autchat
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Q5: Are there good ways to handle referring to a group of people with the same disability, if some people in the group want to use one term and others want to use a different one? #autchat
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
I correct them. Something I explain is that it is VERY important to allow the autistic person to self identify. I explain that I use IFL and why I make that decision, but that some people like PFL. If you listen to us and identify us how we ask you to, that's best. #autchat https://t.co/kSaxHyMWBK
Autistictalk @aspergirltalk
@Unuhinuii It doesn’t affect my movement. In fact I was a dancer growing up. It’s more that I can’t remember what each side is called because they feel the same so if you tell me to turn left Its 50% I’ll turn right. I am mixed dominant: right handed, left eyed, left legged. #autchat
elemental1025 @elemental1025
@autchatmod A5: This is hard. I do have strong preferences for myself, but I'm still trying to figure out inclusive respectful ways for more general terminology. #autchat
Autistictalk @aspergirltalk
@autisticb4mmr Our disability interest group at work changed to person first after I explained my preference. It was a leap for them to grasp it as they are neurotypucal, and I really appreciate it. #autchat
Autistictalk @aspergirltalk
@euan_burns @autchatmod I just started coming out in the last month at work. I wrote a blog post for intranet about it that is going up at work tomorrow. Nothing like coming out to 1000s at a time! Yikes! So far people have been great but it hasn’t been long enough to feel repercussions. #autchat

Autistictalk @aspergirltalk
@autchatmod A5: That’s a very good question. I’d go with what the majority of people with that disability prefer. To do otherwise is to denigrate the disabled. If it’s a tie, then let people choose for themselves and respect peoples’ choices. #autchat
Autistictalk @aspergirltalk
@Unuhinuii It’s really odd that I can remember that I’m right handed, left legged and left eyed, but I have to very consciously think about the sides to describe something as being on the left or right. It’s become kind of a joke in my creative presentations at work. #autchat
Autistictalk @aspergirltalk
@endeverstar @euan_burns @autchatmod Thanks! I’m a little anxious because there are people in the company that I have worked with for years at other companies before I knew. Should be interesting. #autchat
