#AutChat mod @autchatmod
#AutChat is a tag for autistic people & "autistic cousins" (people with similar experiences due to hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy, ADHD, etc). We welcome autistic/similar people whether formally diagnosed, self-dx'd, or questioning/wondering if they are autistic/similar.
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Welcome to #AutChat, a weekly chat for autistic & similar people Sundays 1pm Pacific / 4pm Eastern / 8pm UTC / 9pm BST! https://t.co/rRrhi9g3PS #AutChat hosts chats on topics related to our experiences as neurodivergent people. See our past topics here: https://t.co/F56bZKG5Jo
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
We post transcripts of the weekly chats to our website, https://t.co/QrdW2dQuN0. We link to them on the #AutChat tag and on our Facebook page. Transcripts are created with Wakelet, and are visible there and on our site.

For #AutChat announcements and weekly questions, follow this account. DM us to request reminder tweets (we get a lot of notifications during AutChat and sometimes don’t see replies). How to participate in #AutChat and other twitter chats: https://t.co/SkuXgvj1ZM
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Questions are prefaced Q0, Q1, Q2, etc. When you reply, preface tweets with A0, A1, etc & include "#AutChat" so others see them! Please capitalize it as #AutChat to make it more accessible to screenreaders.
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Q0: Introduce yourself! Say anything you like about yourself or your interest in #AutChat or in today's topic, cooking. Quick reference for this week's #AutChat questions (please wait till they're tweeted to answer): https://t.co/VssAVBkeAO
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Both #AutChat mods are out of town this week. We've prescheduled tweets, but we may not be able to reply to any questions for a couple days. We usually fav your intro tweets to welcome you. We can't do that this week but we are just as glad you're here!
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
[cn:food] Hello, I am Solveig. I can't cook. I once burned water. 😬 #AutChat A0
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Q1: Do you cook? If so, why? If not, why not? #AutChat
Zoë 🦇 @ExogeologyRocks
@autchatmod A0: Hello! I'm autistic and vegan. I enjoy cooking but I don't cook all the time, largely due to the time and effort it takes. #AutChat
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
[cn:food] I have a lot of trouble cooking, and there's a number of reasons. I feel like when my siblings were living at home, they had more instruction and practice time with cooking, when I spent all day trying to stay afloat with homework. (1/2) #AutChat A1
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
[cn:food] The other problem is that when I did get cooking instructions, I think my instructors liked to give me verbal instructions where they give me several steps to follow, but then I forget the first step. So I didn't get much done. #AutChat A1
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Q2: What are some of your favorite meals to cook? (Non-cookers: Favorite meals to eat?) #AutChat

Zoë 🦇 @ExogeologyRocks
@autchatmod A1: I cook when I can! I enjoy lots of elements of it: chopping and slicing, good smells and tastes in a variety of combinations, the fact that I'm creating something I or someone else will use and enjoy... #AutChat

RT @autchatmod: Q1: Q1: Do you cook? If so, why? If not, why not? #AutChat
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
[cn:food] There's one recipe I can do well. ONE. It's pasta with a lemon garlic cream sauce (made from scratch), and also I'll add chopped baby spinach and grape tomatoes. #AutChat A2 Don't ask me how I can ruin boiled water and still be able to make this.
Zoë 🦇 @ExogeologyRocks
@autchatmod A1 part 2: However, I often end up putting my time and energy into other things, so it often works out better to have quick and easy food. It's also harder to go through all the steps of cooking when I'm feeling off due to being hungry. Irony... #AutChat
Erin @Autist4Library
#AutChat A0 I'm Erin. I have been watching AutChat for a while, but this is my first time participating. I love cooking & baking, to the degree that I sometimes take it to an unhealthy level. When I was pregnant I made 900 cookies, 2 batches of fudge, & some other stuff @ Xmas.

Erin @Autist4Library
#AutChat A1 I love cooking, but I often don't. It's something that definitely takes a lot of spoons, and a lot of the time lately I just don't have it in me. When I do have the energy, I make some great stuff though! It brings me a lot of happiness and fulfillment.
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
I have this odd feeling I'm missing the vast majority of #AutChat posts. Thanks, web browser.
Erin @Autist4Library
#AutChat A2 I really like to cook Chicken picatta with a nice side salad or lemon-garlic broccoli. Chicken scampi with similar sides. Baking especially! Lemon poppyseed or double mint cookies. Apple crisp, fudge, snickerdoodle apple pie bars, caramel.
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Q3: What are some of the barriers to cooking meals that you may experience? #AutChat
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
Ok -- I will need to remember to press Ctrl-F5 to hard refresh periodically, since it's lapsing as much as ten minutes between refreshes for #AutChat. This is on Google Chrome for Windows 7.
Dr. Alyssa @yes_thattoo
Hi, I’m Alyssa. Grad student in neuroscience. I enjoy cooking when I have the executive functioning and spoons for it, but that’s not often enough to rely on for feeding my me. #AutChat
Zoë 🦇 @ExogeologyRocks
@autchatmod A2: It depends what level of complexity I'm up for. A common dish I make is pasta and tomato sauce and/or pasta salad, but I like trying new things, especially when working with the right people. #AutChat
🕷Your Sharpest Teeth🕷 @chromesthesia
A0 I cook rather well but sometimes I don't feel like it #autchat
Dr. Alyssa @yes_thattoo
A1: Not regularly. I live in a dorm without a kitchen, but also what is the executive functioning for this? Making tea is sometimes a struggle. #AutChat
🕷Your Sharpest Teeth🕷 @chromesthesia
@autchatmod I do because I have to but sometimes I'm in a lot of pain and very exhausted so I can't get anything done #autchat
Dr. Alyssa @yes_thattoo
A2: I like extremely spicy pasta and rice dishes! #AutChat
Dr. Alyssa @yes_thattoo
A3: I’ll forget time, lose track of the next steps, wander off and get distracted... generally what is executive functioning? #AutChat
Zoë 🦇 @ExogeologyRocks
@autchatmod A2 part 2: I spent most of December cooking with a good friend who both used to own a restaurant and happens to think very similarly to me. Those qualities plus having the time meant we made all sorts of cookies, fun appetizers, creative full meals with our own twists... #AutChat
Diane✊🏽@Autastic.com @WeAreAutastic
A1: I used to love cooking so much I started a catering company. Then ran away because people. Now I bake for joy and make elaborate dishes occasionally. Mostly it's about following the rules and enjoying the outcome. Very stimmy. #AutChat
CLE change the world @Bluebirdlouise
RT @autchatmod: Q3: Q3: What are some of the barriers to cooking meals that you may experience? #AutChat
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
[cn:food] I need formal cooking lessons, and a better understanding of how to maintain a kitchen. I need to know how to do grocery shopping -- at least the kind that lets me have a varied diet. Because I have no idea what I am doing. #AutChat A3
Nicole Radziwiłł @nicoleradziwill
A3: Takes time, requires physical energy, requires ingredients. Usually those last two are a problem. Really, I can live on Cheerios.
Zoë 🦇 @ExogeologyRocks
@autchatmod A2 part 3: On the other hand, when I'm not up for much but I still want to do something with food because I enjoy it (or someone asks), I like slicing up apples in patterns like 3D puzzles. #AutChat
CLE change the world @Bluebirdlouise
@autchatmod #autchat a3 loss of ability to concentrate on cooking due to being hungry. inability to time things ie allow time to cook, predict hunger etc. erratic shopping, chronic illness, repetitive taste cravings, difficulty finding the energy to clean up.
Diane✊🏽@Autastic.com @WeAreAutastic
A1: BUT! I do have issues with feeding myself regularly. Cooking for me is more of an activity I need to plan for. Everyday meals tend to get forgotten until I'm way hangry. That's exec func for you! #AutChat
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Q4: How do you think kitchens could be more accessible to autistic/similarly neurodivergent cooks? #AutChat
Eric Michael Garcia @EricMGarcia
#AutChat A0. my name is Eric Garcia, I am a writer and a journalist based in Washington, DC
Eric Michael Garcia @EricMGarcia
#AutChat A1. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't but have made it a point in the last two years or so to try and cook more.
Diane✊🏽@Autastic.com @WeAreAutastic
A2: I like meals that look beautiful when finished. That can be anything but plating, obvs, is prime. #AutChat
Zoë 🦇 @ExogeologyRocks
@autchatmod A3: Mostly time (or perhaps time management), but also getting distracted or losing my place in a recipe (especially with baking, but less of a problem when I can taste to check), navigating around other people, and energy (physical, mental, and emotional). #AutChat
Eric Michael Garcia @EricMGarcia
#AutChat A3. I think the main barrier is usually just energy. It may be cheaper money-wise to cook but it takes a lot of energy to take the half-mile walk to the grocery store, shop in a crowded store (why I prefer night-shopping) and then cooking. it costs spoons.
Dr. Alyssa @yes_thattoo
A4: If a recipe has multiple streams of doing things that are supposed to be parallel, show it with graphical organization? Columns, maybe? #AutChat
Eric Michael Garcia @EricMGarcia
A4 #AutChat I think one way is to help with clearly written instructions for how to operate machinery. Also, using easy-to-operate dishwashers.
CLE change the world @Bluebirdlouise
#autchat A2 forgot the hashtag
Darla @basicnbizarre
@autchatmod A0 #AutChat I am HUGELY passionate about cooking at home. I worked professionally as a cook for 16ish years and it utterly destroyed me.
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
I need formal cooking lessons by someone who knows my challenges with verbal processing. I'm sure there's more to it than this, but this is my primary obstacle. #AutChat A4
Darla @basicnbizarre
@autchatmod A1 #Autchat I cook because I enjoy it and if I didn’t then I wouldn’t have anything to eat.
Eric Michael Garcia @EricMGarcia
@ErinNolon Do you think that might be part of myopic or "focused interest?" #autchat
Diane✊🏽@Autastic.com @WeAreAutastic
Q3: Executive function issues are the biggest barrier. I get overwhelmed if I forget I need to eat and have to figure it out fast. I have trouble knowing what to buy for the week because I can't see all those meals ahead, even with an app. #AutChat
CLE change the world @Bluebirdlouise
@autchatmod a2 #autchat i don’t like making cooked breakfasts or roast dinners, anything involving multiple timings. i like one-pan solutions, or things i can prepare ahead.
Darla @basicnbizarre
@autchatmod A2 #AutChat To make? Ummm...I dunno. I like stuff with a lot of ingredients that come out as a big batch so I can eat it for several days and often freeze a bunch. Helps save on costs. Last night I made jambalaya! https://t.co/k82o4SDq4D
Eric Michael Garcia @EricMGarcia
@yes_thattoo #AutChat. Thank you for saying this. Sometimes, executive functioning, especially after a long day makes it impossible to cook. Some people would think it's crazy to get takeout sometimes after going grocery shopping. I say "I used too many spoons to cook."
Kassiane @UVGKassi
#autchat Q0. I'm still kassiane, still ancient, still biracial and a jock and a science kid
Darla @basicnbizarre
@autchatmod A3 #AutChat At home? Executive dysfunction, cost, time, and keeping all the steps in the right order. Baking is a challenge and I’ve only in the last year really gotten more into it. I prefer meals where there are fewer steps involved.
CLE change the world @Bluebirdlouise
@autchatmod a4 #autchat blow the bloody doors off. seriously though, so much easier if you could see where everything was. also, fridges that had slide out shelves?
Kassiane @UVGKassi
#autchat Q1 only very rarely. Too many steps and epilepsy makes heat and knives dangerous. Also I forget food is required til too late. I deeply resent spending spoons on food instead of other stuff.
Diane✊🏽@Autastic.com @WeAreAutastic
A3: Also a barrier is the presence of other people. Like a dinner party is my idea of EF hell. Let me do my thing while y'all chat in the other room. But I love feeding people and planning the menu. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ #AutChat
Kassiane @UVGKassi
#autchat Q2. The actual only things I can cook are buuz (steamed dumplings) and boortsog (deep fried butter cookies). So I guess that's what I dont hate making
Diane✊🏽@Autastic.com @WeAreAutastic
A0: In case you haven't guessed, #food is a major interest of mine. Major. #AutChat
Darla @basicnbizarre
@autchatmod A4 #AutChat Clear instructions presented in a logical manner. Explanations of what ingredients do which things. Professional kitchens? I could rant for days, but they’re just awful places to work in any case.
Eric Michael Garcia @EricMGarcia
@photon_barrier @yes_thattoo Oh yeah. Sometimes if I forget to get food, once I am done Grocery shopping, I will crash on my bed for three hours. Not to mention, grocery day is also usually laundry/dry cleaning day, which is to say I am already spending spoons. #AutChat
Kassiane @UVGKassi
#autchat Q3. -time. I have very few free hours bc everything takes 5eva when you dont drive -executive function -epilepsy -never being allowed to be bad at things means new things are impossible (thanks ABA. eat my ass.)
Dr. Alyssa @yes_thattoo
RT @UVGKassi: #autchat Q3. -time. I have very few free hours bc everything takes 5eva when you dont drive -executive function -epilepsy -never being allowed to be bad at things means new things are impossible (thanks ABA. eat my ass.)
Diane✊🏽@Autastic.com @WeAreAutastic
@autisticb4mmr Have you tried YouTube lessons? You can stop/start/replay to your heart's content. Would it help to have a list of videos to work thru maybe? Just a thought... #AutChat
Kassiane @UVGKassi
#autchat Q4 I really need a kassiane proof recipe and places to spread everything out to do it but that's never gunna happen
Eric Michael Garcia @EricMGarcia
@ErinNolon #autchat That second part is fascinating to me. I think as a Mexican-American, where cooking and food is such a central part of communication, I learned I could "talk" with food, so to speak, especially when social interaction is so exhausting.
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
The scheduled #AutChat is wrapping up. It's fine to keep chatting, join in late, or use the tag at other times!

Next Sunday’s #AutChat is on self-concept and learning you’re autistic or similarly neurodivergent. Sun Apr 21, 1pm Pacific / 4pm Eastern / 8pm UTC / 9pm BST. https://t.co/Y8OixFkQ45
Erin @Autist4Library
#AutChat A3 Cooking stuff is really hard for me if the layout or tools are unfamiliar, I have distractions, or don't have a clear & detailed plan. If I don't understand it or have hiccups I really struggle to recover.
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
If you know anyone who might be interested and is autistic or similarly neurodivergent, we encourage you to invite them. #AutChat

Eric Michael Garcia @EricMGarcia
@yes_thattoo @photon_barrier I get very tired usually. So it's usually on my day off, or if I work late (which is twice a week), I do it in the morning before going to the office. I usually pack as many chores into one day as possible so I don't lose spoons on other days where I know I will be busy. #AutChat
Eric Michael Garcia @EricMGarcia
A3 #autchat On the flipside, I think one of the good things about cooking is predictability. If you find a recipe with exact measurements, then it just becomes a matter of consistency and there is satisfaction in sameness.
Zoë 🦇 @ExogeologyRocks
@autchatmod A4: As in the room itself? More than one sink, perhaps? It's not fun to wait for someone else to finish whatever they're doing while your hands are covered in some form of sensory ick. #AutChat
Dr. Alyssa @yes_thattoo
A4: but honestly just feed me so I don’t need to deal with this #autchat
Erin @Autist4Library
#AutChat A4 Having a really neat, organized space with all the extra stuff put away is really helpful. Also helpful is having clear, detailed plans of when/how to do each thing. Having designated pre-prep time as often as possible. Limit noises/distractions. Personal work space.
Zoë 🦇 @ExogeologyRocks
@autchatmod A4: Big windows for lots of natural light. #AutChat
Diane✊🏽@Autastic.com @WeAreAutastic
A4: I've outfitted my kitchen with nearly silent appliances, clear glass containers, tools that feel good to the touch, and soaps I enjoy smelling. I treat it like a playground because it is. It's taken an entire life to do it tho' $$$. #AutChat
Fractal @fractal_queer
@autchatmod A1: yes, because a) I'd go hungry otherwise (too picky for most ready meals, plus they're expensive), and b) I do enjoy it. I used to pretty much eat dry cereal, toast and pasta w/tomato sauce (lack of energy/executive function & money), but I cook a lot more now. #AutChat
Allie @kestrelct
@autchatmod A0: I’m Allie. I have several food intolerances, had very disordered eating in high school, and major executive functioning issues with cooking. #AutChat
Fractal @fractal_queer
@autchatmod A2: Most things I cook are 1 pot meals, I like how the ingredients come together to make something new. I really love cooking things with lots of individual tasks but where timing isn't essential- all the fun of the preparation without stress. #AutChat
Allie @kestrelct
@autchatmod A1: I cook very little, mostly things that use the toaster oven or only boiling water. Executive dysfunction is the main barrier - too many steps, too much mess, and I get overwhelmed and just put off eating. My husband cooks for me. #AutChat
