Welcome to #AutChat, a weekly chat for autistic & similar people Sundays 1pm Pacific / 4pm Eastern / 8pm UTC / 9pm BST! https://t.co/rRrhi9g3PS #AutChat hosts chats on topics related to our experiences as neurodivergent people. See our past topics here: https://t.co/F56bZKG5Jo
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
#AutChat is a tag for autistic people & "autistic cousins" (people with similar experiences due to hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy, ADHD, etc). We welcome autistic/similar people whether formally diagnosed, self-dx'd, or questioning/wondering if they are autistic/similar.
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
We post transcripts of the weekly chats to our website, https://t.co/QrdW2e85Ey. We link to them on the #AutChat tag and on our Facebook page. Transcripts are created with Wakelet, and are visible there and on our site.
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Other people can post, retweet, or share any of our posts or links. This includes our tweets, our Facebook posts, links to our website, and links to Wakelet. If you want your tweets excluded from future #AutChat transcripts, DM us.
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
For #AutChat announcements and weekly questions, follow this account. DM us to request reminder tweets (we get a lot of notifications during AutChat and sometimes don’t see replies). How to participate in #AutChat and other twitter chats: https://t.co/SkuXgvACRk
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Questions are prefaced Q0, Q1, Q2, etc. When you reply, preface tweets with A0, A1, etc & include "#AutChat" so others see them! Please capitalize it as #AutChat to make it more accessible to screenreaders.
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Q0: Introduce yourself! Say anything you like about yourself or your interest in #AutChat or in today's topic, travel. Quick reference for this week's #AutChat questions (please wait till they're tweeted to answer): https://t.co/nB9sFsLR7H
Dr. Alyssa @yes_thattoo
A0: I’m an autistic graduate student in neuroscience, and I travel a decent bit. Spent a year studying in 天津 (Tianjin), in China, and it wasn’t my first time there. Going to Europe later this summer. #AutChat
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Q1: Do you travel? What method (car, bus, plane, etc)? How often? How far? #AutChat
Dr. Alyssa @yes_thattoo
A1: I don’t drive, but I take public transit rather a lot. Mostly bus, sometimes subway if I’m somewhere that has it. Anywhere from a mile down the street to my lab up to internationally, though shorter is more frequent #AutChat
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Q2: What is traveling like for you? #AutChat
Helen Rottier @helenrottier
A0: I’m Helen, she/her, grad student focused on academic access and autistic scholarship from Chicago, IL. Currently joining from Washington DC where I am attending @autselfadvocacy #ACI2019! #AutChat
Kassiane @UVGKassi
#AutChat q0. Kassiane, autistileptic, biracial. I like trains and this week that's relevant
Helen Rottier @helenrottier
A1: I travel more now as a grad student (attending trainings/conferences) and having moved away from my hometown and alma mater. #AutChat 1/3
Dr. Alyssa @yes_thattoo
A2: it depends. Crowded subways aren’t fun, but a commuter rail or a bus or a subway with enough room for me to sit, and with headphones, lets me use my transit time for other things. That’s nice. #AutChat
Kassiane @UVGKassi
#AutChat q1. Define travel? I'vgone all over northAmerica via plane, train, car, and bus. I also get around town on public transit
Kassiane @UVGKassi
#AutChat q2. I actually really like traveling, except I get jet lag from hell
Helen Rottier @helenrottier
A1: In Chicago, I travel almost exclusively on foot, on bus, and on the L. I love public transportation (one of my special interests!) and feel lucky to live in a city with robust public transit. 🚌🚝 #AutChat 2/3
Helen Rottier @helenrottier
A1: Yesterday I flew to DC (mostly okay!), next week I’ll fly to Minnesota for another conference, and then I’ll take the Amtrak (another train!) back to Chicago. I also take the Coach bus to Madison frequently. #AutChat 3/3
Zoë 🦇 @ExogeologyRocks
@autchatmod A0: Hi, I'm Zoe. I love to travel! Some ways are better for me than others, but it's usually worth it for me. #AutChat
Helen Rottier @helenrottier
A2: Traveling within Chicago is awesome! I feel comfortable with the public transit and know my way around. I’m getting better at traveling for conferences- it can still be nerve-wracking, but today I took the DC Metro. The worst part is the new routine. #AutChat
Helen Rottier @helenrottier
RT @yes_thattoo: A2: A2: it depends. Crowded subways aren’t fun, but a commuter rail or a bus or a subway with enough room for me to sit, and with headphones, lets me use my transit time for other things. That’s nice. #AutChat
@AutSciPerson@mstdn.social @AutSciPerson
Q0: Hi, I'm an autistic self-advocate and neuroscience grad student. I don't like traveling much due to both a physical disability and hyperacusis and being autistic. #AutChat
Zoë 🦇 @ExogeologyRocks
@autchatmod A1: Yes! I very much prefer train trips, but it's more common for me to either fly or be a passenger or navigator in a car. I'm not sure a year has gone by without at least one cross-country trip. #AutChat
@AutSciPerson@mstdn.social @AutSciPerson
Q1: I usually drive because I can actually turn down the radio if I need to (which I usually do). Public transportation in general stresses me out because it generally hurts my ears. I have to remember to wear my headphones or it's a really unpleasant/painful experience #AutChat
Helen Rottier @helenrottier
A2: Yesterday was my first flight with TSA PreCheck and that was a huge access tool for me- less standing in line, worrying about taking things in and out of my bags, getting through and trying to act “normal” so I don’t attract attention. #AutChat
Helen Rottier @helenrottier
A2: But I do write out a full list of steps before I head to the airport: take the Blue Line to O’Hare, print boarding pass, check bag, security, find food/beverage, find my gate, use the restroom. #AutChat
@AutSciPerson@mstdn.social @AutSciPerson
Q2: Traveling is really exhausting. There are 100 different things to think about and prepare for. Can I bring crutches? Are people going to ask me "what happened"? Do I have my mp3 player and headphones and emergency earplugs? Always have to prepare for the worst. #AutChat
Dr. Alyssa @yes_thattoo
@helenrottier I got PreCheck too, and it's helped me. More with *not getting patted down literally every time I fly* than anything else, but that's kind of important. #AutChat
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Q3: If traveling is stressful for you, what do you do to reduce stress? #AutChat
Zoë 🦇 @ExogeologyRocks
@autchatmod A1 part 2: I should clarify that I mean I've been a passenger on commercial flights. Half my immediate family members have flown a plane themselves, so I want to be clear I have not and don't plan to. (I'd rather fly a plane than drive a car though. Less scary.) #AutChat
Helen Rottier @helenrottier
RT @yes_thattoo: @helenrottier I got PreCheck too, and it's helped me. More with *not getting patted down literally every time I fly* than anything else, but that's kind of important. #AutChat
Helen Rottier @helenrottier
A3: Make detailed lists of the travel steps (i.e. take train to airport, print boarding pass, check bag...). Take anti-anxiety and anti-nausea medication. Find fun movies to watch on the plane. On the train I just work and on the bus I’m looking forward to seeing family! #AutChat
Dr. Alyssa @yes_thattoo
Ditto #AutChat
Zoë 🦇 @ExogeologyRocks
@autchatmod A2 part 1: I've hated being in cars since day one, and it took me forever to get to the point where I can handle riding in one, but I still can't/don't/won't drive. I still get anxious on mountain roads. Not usually carsick, but sometimes that too. #AutChat
Kassiane @UVGKassi
#AutChat q3 I pack early and make agendas. so many agendas. So many flowcharts. And written plans for when things go wrong
Zoë 🦇 @ExogeologyRocks
@autchatmod A2 part 2: Planes are a hassle. Sometimes the speed is worth it. I like takeoff and landing, but everything's sensorily terrible, especially pressure on my ears. Security's tricky too. I'm usually too slow, and last time I couldn't figure out what TSA people were saying. #AutChat
Helen Rottier @helenrottier
RT @UVGKassi: #AutChat q3 I pack early and make agendas. so many agendas. So many flowcharts. And written plans for when things go wrong
Zoë 🦇 @ExogeologyRocks
@autchatmod A2 part 3: Trains, however, are wonderful. Friendlier environment than planes, no anxiety like cars (we're on tracks!), and sensorily amazing. I love the motion and sound of the tracks, and the conductors' announcements. I'm even happy to meet new people! #AutChat
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Q4: How could traveling be easier? What could other people, transit companies, or airlines do to help? #AutChat
@AutSciPerson@mstdn.social @AutSciPerson
@autchatmod #AutChat Q4: Actually give out sensory information. There is almost no information about how loud public transit is. That would be something quite easy to do. Also have security who is trained in dealing with neurodivergent people - make them understand sensory needs & overload
Dr. Alyssa @yes_thattoo
A4: Grab bars on subways are a bit high for me to reach sometimes. I think they're designed for people who are taller than me, and I'm not even actually short. I'd like this fixed, please. #AutChat
@AutSciPerson@mstdn.social @AutSciPerson
@autchatmod #AutChat Q4: Provide quiet rooms especially at places like train stations and airports and big metros. Have an easier system for asking for accommodations, & have accessibility information on their websites for local places, esp. for knowing if elevators are out (like at metros).
Helen Rottier @helenrottier
A4: I tweeted yesterday that I have “mental disability” listed on my flight reservations and that I was greeted with a wheelchair- other Deaf, Blind, and disabled folks have had similar experiences. #AutChat
Zoë 🦇 @ExogeologyRocks
@CinaedhVik @autchatmod Arriving early is a good idea. That way, you're less rushed, and you have more of a chance to adapt to any last-moment changes. #AutChat
Kassiane @UVGKassi
#AutChat q4 Actually stick to schedules. Actually enforce rules like "use headphones " A reduction in security theater
Helen Rottier @helenrottier
A4: Companies can use accessible design principles (and not the proposed escalator nightmare at O’Hare), clear signage and flow, maybe signs numbering the steps (1. Check-In/Print Boarding Pass near the desk kiosk, 2. Check bags near the bag scales.) #AutChat
