Welcome to #AutChat, a weekly chat for autistic & similar people Sundays 1pm Pacific / 4pm Eastern / 8pm UTC / 9pm BST! https://t.co/rRrhi8Ysri #AutChat hosts chats on topics related to our experiences as neurodivergent people. See our past topics here: https://t.co/F56bZKXGAW
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
#AutChat is a tag for autistic people & "autistic cousins" (people with similar experiences due to hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy, ADHD, etc). We welcome autistic/similar people whether formally diagnosed, self-dx'd, or questioning/wondering if they are autistic/similar.
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
We post transcripts of the weekly chats to our website, https://t.co/QrdW2e85Ey. We link to them on the #AutChat tag and on our Facebook page. Transcripts are created with Wakelet, and are visible there and on our site.
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Other people can post, retweet, or share any of our posts or links. This includes our tweets, our Facebook posts, links to our website, and links to Wakelet. If you want your tweets excluded from future #AutChat transcripts, DM us.

Here's an interesting article about today's topic by my former neuroscience instructor in occupational therapy school. https://t.co/dHto4ZoDRb #autchat
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Questions are prefaced Q0, Q1, Q2, etc. When you reply, preface tweets with A0, A1, etc & include "#AutChat" so others see them! Please capitalize it as #AutChat to make it more accessible to screenreaders.
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Q0: Introduce yourself! Say anything you like about yourself or your interest in #AutChat or in today's topic, dental and orthodontic care. Quick reference for this week's #AutChat questions (please wait till they're tweeted to answer): https://t.co/Gu7X5MUSex

Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@autchatmod A0: My name is Bill. I am an #actuallyautistic occupational therapist. #autchat
theories of minds @theoriesofminds
@autchatmod A0 Hi! I'm here. I had a lot of orthodontic work as a kid and teen. #AutChat
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Q1 Have you had dental and orthodontic care? What kinds of care/procedures/etc? #AutChat
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@autchatmod A1. I do every year for routine dental checkup's. #autchat
theories of minds @theoriesofminds
@autchatmod A1 I had a bunch of cavities as a kid, most caused by not knowing how to brush my teeth properly. I also had too small a jaw for my teeth and had to get some baby teeth pulled and then orthodontic work that extended until I was in college. #AutChat
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Q2 What difficulties have you run into with dental and orthodontic care (e.g., financial, sensory, interpersonal, other)? #AutChat
Heather Ure @riotheatherrr
@BillWongOT @autchatmod A1 My teeth were in really good shape as a kid (no cavities) so I just had routine dental visits, a year of braces at age 14, and wisdom teeth removal at 18. Pregnancy and breastfeeding did a number on my teeth, though (first babies, twins, born when I was 28) . . . #AutChat
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@autchatmod A2. For me, finding a work day off to do dental care is difficult lately- due to I work 7 days on some weeks and then I travel quite a bit also. #autchat
Alyssa @yes_thattoo
A0: I’m an autistic person who is currently at #Dublin2019 at the Hugo’s but noticed this was on. #AutChat
Heather Ure @riotheatherrr
@BillWongOT @autchatmod A1 (cont.) Hormones weakened my gums and teeth (my first cavity ever), so now I have periodontal maintenance cleanings every 4 months, and have had four gum graft surgeries. Ofc, this may also have to do with hypermobility/weak connective tissue, as lots of us have. :/ #AutChat
Alyssa @yes_thattoo
A1: I had braces twice. I’ve also had dental cleanings fairly regularly. #AutChat
theories of minds @theoriesofminds
@autchatmod A2 I'm lucky in that I've always had access to dental care, and that it doesn't trigger more than minor sensory issues for me, and that as an adult I've needed very little dental work beyond routine cleanings. #AutChat
theories of minds @theoriesofminds
@yes_thattoo A1 Oof, twice. My sympathies. #AutChat
Alyssa @yes_thattoo
A2: It’s been a royal pain to avoid MINT at several dentists. Current one is good about that. #AutChat
theories of minds @theoriesofminds
@autchatmod A2 My orthodontia was painful and went on forever. The last component, before getting a retainer, was a "positioner" - a plastic thing molded to an ideal version of my teeth. I was to wear it 4 hours/day, biting down on a schedule: 30 seconds every 4 minutes (I think). #AutChat
theories of minds @theoriesofminds
@autchatmod A2 That was just...incredibly unrealistic for most teenagers, let alone one with (undiagnosed) executive function. But I didn't get to stop wearing it until my teeth had moved enough, so I wound up biting down for a much longer period of time, which gave me TMJ. #AutChat
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Q3 What strategies or coping skills have you used to help? #AutChat
Asy @photon_barrier
A0 I'm Asy and I've suffered from dentist phobia for all my life, but my dental phobia is also why I got dx'd with autism after being kicked out from the dentist office, so here I am (literally). #AutChat
theories of minds @theoriesofminds
@autchatmod A2 Afterward, my teeth were still not straight, and wearing the retainer made my bite hit on only one pair of teeth. I compensated by wearing it only every other night so it wouldn't get too bad. #AutChat
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@autchatmod A3. Playing on my phone to help transition (while in waiting room). The assistants also tried to engage in small talk with me leading up to more difficult parts. #autchat
theories of minds @theoriesofminds
@autchatmod A2 Years later the plastic part started pressing painfully. I went to someone who shaved off a bit of the plastic to make it fit better...and that fixed my bite. It had been incorrectly fitted all that time. (Some of my teeth are still not straight though.) #AutChat
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
*stumbles in late* I'm here I'm here! Hi. I'm Solveig. *checks broken watch* Ohhhhhhh hi! 😅 #AutChat A0
theories of minds @theoriesofminds
@autchatmod A2 I'm still resentful of my teeth still being not straight because I was told for years that I was going through all this so they would be. The orthodontist seemed to kind of lose interest right at the end. #AutChat
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
I have had IDK how many fillings, one root canal, and two crowns. I also had my wisdom teeth out. I enjoyed precisely none of these operations. #AutChat A1
Asy @photon_barrier
A1 I've had all kind of horrible things done to me, check ups, x-rays, idk, fillings (had holes in almost all my baby teeth because I'm cursed), having teeth pulled out. #AutChat
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
The biggest problem I encounter is that I need tons of anesthesia. TONS. And then, approximately three hours after I'm done with my appointment, I start to feel sick and my hands get all shaky. #AutChat A2
Kassiane @UVGKassi
I had braces for 3 years, wisdom teeth removed, and 2 cavities filled
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@autisticb4mmr I remembered I needed some when I got my wisdom teeth removed. That day- my mom accompanied me and she drove me home. #autchat
theories of minds @theoriesofminds
@autchatmod A3 I didn't really have any strategies or coping skills as a kid, but as an adult I've been grateful for the ability to switch providers, especially because I had a couple providers who made me uncomfortable. #AutChat
Asy @photon_barrier
cn needles A2 I mostly struggle with my phobia, I manage better now but draw the line at fillings / injections. My phobias was made worse by some really bad phobia treatment I received as a child at a very strange centre for dentistry phobias. #AutChat
theories of minds @theoriesofminds
@autchatmod A3 In the U.S., dental care is often not covered by insurance, and dentists will sometimes do unnecessary and expensive things. (I got sent to a dental conference for work once—long story—and it was shockingly ritzy. They had a TON of money.) #AutChat
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
@BillWongOT Same here. When I had my wisdom teeth out, I had to take the whole day off work. #AutChat
theories of minds @theoriesofminds
@autchatmod A3 One consequence is that two dentists may vary hugely on what care they say is necessary. I had one dentist try to convince me I needed surgery for something that doesn't cause problems and no other dentist before or since has mentioned. #AutChat

#AutChat A0 Hi! I'm NoPuzzl Plays, or just NoPuzzl, depending on how you came to follow me on Twitter. There's, like, one experience I have with this topic but I'll try my best!
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Q4 Have you had providers who were good to work with? How did you find them? What did they do that helped? #AutChat
NoPuzzl Needs A Nap | 🧠 | ⚖ | 🛡 @NoPuzzl98
#AutChat A1 Yeah. Just one lol. It was a wisdom tooth removal two years ago.
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@autchatmod A4. I am lucky because my mom and my sister are using the same dentist. #autchat
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
I think mostly, I have to plan ahead and take a whole day off for dental work. Three hours after an appointment, I can't use my hands for anything, and I feel sick. So resting up is super important. But I have squeeze toys that help during appointments. #AutChat A3
NoPuzzl Needs A Nap | 🧠 | ⚖ | 🛡 @NoPuzzl98
#AutChat A2 Uhhh....the first doctorsI went to was incredibly ableist and wanted to send me to UIpwa hospitals on virtue of being Autistic instead of actually being a doctor. I'm looking at you, @GreatRiverOMS....please just fire your #DubuqueIowa doctors and replace them.
Asy @photon_barrier
cn needles A2 The first time I arrived at this centre I was locked into a room with a nurse who told me I wasn't allowed to see my mum until I agreed to take a shot "to see that it wasn't dangerous". #AutChat
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
I've seen the same healthcare providers for the past twenty years, and haven't changed doctor or dentist since. I'm not sure how I will find a new provider. #AutChat A4
Asy @photon_barrier
cn needles A2 I was later told I was going to have a tooth filled, but the dentist pulled out the tooth with no warning beforehand instead. This place taught 8 year old me to never trust a dentist again and I never have. #AutChat
NoPuzzl Needs A Nap | 🧠 | ⚖ | 🛡 @NoPuzzl98
#AutChat A2 The one across from the Dairy Queen on Pennsylvania Street was actually way, way better than I expected lol. The surgeon took me right in and even knew what I meant when I said "I'm pretty sure I'm hyperproproceptive, I hate needles under my skin" lol.
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
@photon_barrier Oh jeez!!! Even as an adult, I find it difficult to be in a doctor's or dentist's office without someone there with me. I cannot imagine having a "professional" tell me I cannot have company with me, even for moral support. 😣 #AutChat
Kassiane @UVGKassi
I don't respond to Novocaine. At all. Also the amount of EF involved in getting my braces tightened was a lot but I was 13.
Asy @photon_barrier
A2 What helped me was that since I lost my baby teeth I've only had 2 holes, about 10 years apart. It probably wouldn't go well if I ever have to visit the dentist again. #AutChat
NoPuzzl Needs A Nap | 🧠 | ⚖ | 🛡 @NoPuzzl98
#AutChat A2 He wasn't condescending, he didn't threaten to send me to another hospital like @GreatRiverOMS of Dubuque Iowa did. I love my university but I'll give people Hell over ableism, and what I mean by that is that capitalizing Hell was on purpose. Ableism is not allowed.
Kassiane @UVGKassi
Avoidance tbh. And I ask for the lead apron. They didn't do Novocaine last time bc the needle stressed me more than the pain
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Q5 What else could be done to make dental and orthodontic care more comfortable for you? #AutChat
Kassiane @UVGKassi
I got lucky w.the dentist I found after breaking a tooth, she just kinda rolled https://t.co/Dxc9hpjpxB stuff. And the dentist at my uni got a lot of students who had never been to the dentist. She gave anxious patients stuffies.
NoPuzzl Needs A Nap | 🧠 | ⚖ | 🛡 @NoPuzzl98
#AutChat A3 Uh....I didn't lol. I got to hold someone's fingers (my sister's??) and she complained that next time if I ever go under again she's giving me one finger.
Asy @photon_barrier
A2 My problems are also solved by that I can't afford the dentist (dental care is free in Sweden until you turn 18, then it's not). #AutChat
NoPuzzl Needs A Nap | 🧠 | ⚖ | 🛡 @NoPuzzl98
#AutChat A3 With this facist government I absolutely do not trust surgeons or anything other than a vaccine and so I am avoiding the fuck out of anything that I can unless I'm contagious with something bad. So there's everyone's daily reminder that everyone is in danger okay?
NoPuzzl Needs A Nap | 🧠 | ⚖ | 🛡 @NoPuzzl98
#AutChat A3 Vaccinate your kids. Fuck off with facism. Stay safe okay. I'm probably acting a little "paranoid" (for a lack of better words) but I absolutely refuse to do anything beyond what I need to with this nation until this crisis is over.
Asy @photon_barrier
@autisticb4mmr My mum was told to wait in the waiting room and nothing else, but then she could hear my screams from afar, which she told me years later. People tend to think this treatment was awful & terrifying, but they also think I should be able to get over it, but I can't. #AutChat
NoPuzzl Needs A Nap | 🧠 | ⚖ | 🛡 @NoPuzzl98
#AutChat A3 Uhhh. TL:DR, I went under once about two years ago but I don't plan to do it again any time soon for other reasons.

#AutChat A5 Uh...not fucking go? Other than that, I would love if all of the surgeons in Dubuque from @GreatRiverOMS would get fired and replaced with lest ableist people, because that would mean one thing has changed about that hellhole of a town...
Asy @photon_barrier
A3 So far, only tranquilizers have worked unless I'm too tired or surprised to care about that I should be terrified. For a few years after the phobia centre I had a really nice dentist I think soothed some of my phobia, but then he retired. #AutChat

#AutChat addenum: Once I was out, my reaction to the anesthesia apparently isn't normal. More specifically, my recovery time was way shorter. I was writin6about ableism literally as soon as I was in the wheelchair.

#AutChat addendum: I don't know if that's an Autism thing or a possible trauma thing, given my history with Dubuque (aforementioned ableist town where nt trauma with seclusion rooms happened at Hillcrest Family Services) But I figured I should mention it.
MJ @LifeAsMeMJ
@autchatmod I'd love to see an #AutChat specifically on compassionate empathy & how senses of injustice & unfairness feel for us. Also something on the importance of closure in the #ActuallyAutistic psyche, how overanalysis/social anxiety can make a lack of closure really hard to cope with.
Asy @photon_barrier
A4 I probably answered this question above, I was lucky to be assigned a... I guess kind dentist when I moved towns at the age of 11. The majority of Swedish dentistry is public (but still costs money) so most likely you just go to the office you've been assigned to. #AutChat
