Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@shelle7842 Hi! Thanks for sharing this. So, are you saying that part of the problem is your "self" and your preferences (likes & dislikes, for instance) change often? #BPDChat

Do you wear a mask to be acceptable to other people? What causes you to feel the need to wear a mask? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Do you think everybody, whether they have a BPD label or not, wears a mask at some point? #BPDChat
bpdvideo @bpdvideo
@CarlDunnJr I believe we do... More often when interacting with people you are less familiar with. Less so when you are with people you feel most comfortable with. #BPDChat
SheBrew (Jacaranda) @Jacaranga73
I almost never drop the mask in public. I never cry in public ..
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Apparent competence is a term Marsha Linehan (DBT) came up with. #BPDChat 1/4
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Shari Manning says, "Apparent competence takes a number of different forms, but essentially it describes a pattern in which the person looks totally capable of solving the problems life presents but really is not." #BPDChat 2/4
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
One facet of "apparent competence" is that one may appear fine & not in distress to others when they're really in distress & feel they're falling apart. This sometimes causes people's therapist or professional to not notice their distress. Have you experience this? #BPDChat 4/4
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Apparent competence is the idea that people with BPD label may sometimes appear able to cope with certain things, but at other times or in other situations they are not able to cope (their skills break down, for instance). #BPDChat 3/4
Sanford Jeames; DHA, FASCO(He, Him) @JeamesSailor
@CarlDunnJr I've been told that I wear a mask. I guess it's due to necessity or expectation that I feel I have to reach. #BPDchat #disparities
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Do you drop the mask with certain people? Do you wish you could drop the mask? #BPDChat
Britty Wicked @wickedlittlesin
Part of it is acceptance, and the other part is just survival.
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@jemmabrown Good point. #BPDChat

This lack of a sense of self can lead to scanning the external environment for cues as to how to behave, what to think & feel. #BPDChat

Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Wearing a mask could have to do with not knowing who you are, or it could have to do with not wanting others to know who you actually are... #BPDChat 1/2
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
What do you find most challenging about identity and knowing oneself? #BPDChat 2/2
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Someone mentioned to me that when they were working on recovery they felt like two different people at times. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
One person previously mentioned that journaling was helpful for them in knowing themselves. #BPDChat
Queen of Something @law_lori

"Accurate reflection" refers to telling other people what you're (accurately) thinking and feeling. It's hard for others to understand or validate you if they don't know how you're actually thinking and feeling. #BPDChat 1/2
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Do you think it would be helpful to be able to communicate how you're actually thinking and feeling to others? #BPDChat 2/2

@alwayspencil This sounds like a really good thing to do. Some people find that writing down and identifying their preferences (likes/dislikes) and values can help with strengthen their sense of self. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@MindBrill This is a really good point. It is okay to say how we think & feel, but as you say, it can be scary because it can make you feel vulnerable. #BPDChat
BPD365 @bpd365
@CarlDunnJr No, I don’t think they would feel good about me if they knew how I think. #BPDChat

@CarlDunnJr I find that now I am a therapist-in-training, I become almost embarrassed or ashamed of the feelings and thoughts I have if my BPD flares up. (Which is usually once a month, because of #PME/#PMDD) #BPDChat

@hom3rjfong Yes, not being able to trust must make it very hard. #BPDChat
Alyse ✨ she/they @alyseruriani
@CarlDunnJr And not because theres anything to be embarrassed about—it’s internalized stigma that has been amplified by this fear of being seen as incompetent for having lived experience. Which is an issue in its own right. #BPDChat
