HealingFromBPD (Debbie) @HealingFromBPD
I hear you! My psychiatrist opted to put "History of Severe Psychological Trauma" instead of BPD at the time of my diagnosis so I would receive compassionate care...and because that's the reality of why I was presenting BPD symptoms! #BPDchat

...hi #bpdchat I'm having a really hard day cause its fathers day, and a lot of my traumas are connected to the loss of my dad. I keep disociating and forgetting to take my meds. And I feel so alone since 'graduating' from DBT and losing all my supports.
Meandmymhmatters BA (Hons) @Meandmymhmatter
@CarlDunnJr I like pop punk mostly like Panic! At The Disco and Simple Plan. I also like the band Busted (my teenage obsession) and George Ezra at the moment. Music means a lot to me. I wish I got the chance to listen to it more often. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@Meandmymhmatter Hi! Thanks for sharing. #BPDChat
Kitten.capoodle @KCapoodle
For me music is really social #bpdchat . So I like music people send me or share with me. I'm also really visual so I like music with great/interesting music videos that tell a story.

@NeverwillFall17 Hi! Welcome to the chat. #BPDChat
Kitten.capoodle @KCapoodle
[REDACTED USER] @CarlDunnJr Yes. I relate. #bpdchat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
[REDACTED USER] Hi! Thanks for sharing - welcome to the chat. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@NeverwillFall17 The main topic ... coming up in a bit.... is 'Dissociation'. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
I have a wide interest in music. If I had to take something to a desert island it would Dylan. But I like rock, punk, jazz (esp. saxophone giants, free jazz), some country, classical, opera, etc. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
[REDACTED USER] @KCapoodle I'm sorry to hear that. Glad you're here for this chat. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
I guess we'd better start into the main topic for today - there's a lot to talk about. If you have favorite music you're invited to post it. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Tonight's topic is.... Dissociation: What's Your Experience? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
One of the 9 criteria for BPD (in the DSM) involves experiencing severe dissociation when under stress. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Have you experienced dissociation? How would you explain dissociation to someone else? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Derealization is one form of dissociation - when the world feels unreal or you feel disconnected from the world. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Depersonalization is another form of dissociation - when you feel unreal or you feel disconnected from yourself. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
What type of dissociation do you experience? How often do you experience it? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
When do you experience dissociation? #BPDChat
Meandmymhmatters BA (Hons) @Meandmymhmatter
@CarlDunnJr Recently I seem to be experiencing it after a long time of not. It's like I'm out of my body, frozen in time. My thoughts just disappear and I just feel I've been absent when I return to the moment. At least I think this is dissociation? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@Meandmymhmatter That sounds like it. #BPDChat
Kitten.capoodle @KCapoodle
@CarlDunnJr #bpdchat yes. I've experienced many kinds of dissociation. From lost time, to feeling like the world around me is moving at a different speed (fast fwd or slow mo). 1/3
Meandmymhmatters BA (Hons) @Meandmymhmatter
@CarlDunnJr What kind do you think this is? #BPDChat
Kitten.capoodle @KCapoodle
@CarlDunnJr #bpdchat 2/3 The most challenging would be disociating by losing all memories that occurred in a certain emo state if I wasnt in that state. Eg. When happy only remember happy things and when sad only remember sad things. A very strong mental seperation triggered by emotions.
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@Meandmymhmatter I'm not an expert but the "out of the body" experience sounds like depersonalization? (Aguirre & Galen mention a similar experience in their book "Coping with BPD". #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
We also want to hear from you if you have BPD but don't experience dissociation. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Does dissociation feel uncomfortable or unpleasant to you? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
I think part of the experience might be not realizing what's going on while you're going through it? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr

RT @CarlDunnJr: Have you experienced dissociation? How would you explain dissociation to someone else? #BPDChat
Kitten.capoodle @KCapoodle
@CarlDunnJr #bpdchat 3/3 as my mindfullness skill grew I became aware of some disociating, where it seemed i went deep inside myself. it was very peaceful. I could still hear people talking but didnt care about anything anymore. It was a V peaceful state it was V tempting to stay dissociated
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
What do you think you look to others while you're dissociating? How could I tell you're dissociating? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@dogmumstace [REDACTED USER] Thanks for sharing this... #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
I think it's not uncommon that someone feels like they must be the only one experiencing these things. #BPDChat Do you feel alone when dealing with dissociation? Have you been able to talk to others about the experience? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
How young were you when you first starting experiencing dissociation? #BPDChat
Meandmymhmatters BA (Hons) @Meandmymhmatter
@CarlDunnJr Apparently, according to my Dad, I look like I'm "away with the fairies". It's obvious I'm not present. #BPDChat
Meandmymhmatters BA (Hons) @Meandmymhmatter
@CarlDunnJr It feels kind of odd. I wouldn't describe it as unpleasant but it's not great either. It's confusing. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@Luciek11K That's good to let people know. How would you explain to someone else on the chat to cope with dissociation? #BPDChat
Kitten.capoodle @KCapoodle
@CarlDunnJr #bpdchat Sometimes you know cause I tell you Im fighting it. Often I just do a tiny repetative motion w/ my hand, like rubbing my thumb against the side of my finger, & when I come out I often say "I'm sorry I've lost my train of thought", or "could you please repeat that?" Ect..
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Do you have the experience of "losing time" when you're dissociating? How big a problem is it? #BPDChat
Meandmymhmatters BA (Hons) @Meandmymhmatter
@CarlDunnJr I think it started quite young for me with the traumas I went through it was the only way my brain coped. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Afterwards, do you have amnesia (don't remember) anything that happened while you were dissociated? #BPDChat
Theresa @theresaetcetera
TW: flashbacks, dissociation I just wrote this in response to a question on today’s #BPDChat and... I’m sorry but that’s just horrific. I feel awful for myself tbh. And I think that’s justified right now because I don’t often feel it.
🏴‍☠️G-Anne🏴‍☠️ @gacossey
#BPDChat I definitely feel detached, going thru the motions, putting on my happy face. Most recently was just at my daughter’s high school graduation. I thought I’d be a crying mess. Seems kinda hazy now..realized my brain was helping me handle it
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
I would think a priority when you notice you are dissociating is to keep yourself safe? Do you have any suggestions for others about how to keep safe when dissociating? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
I think there are different forms of dissociation. Anyone dissociate in multiple different ways?#BPDchat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Do you experience "emotional numbing" when you dissociate? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Do you have coping skills to deal with dissociating? How did you find coping skills to deal with dissociation? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
How would you explain coping with dissociation to others who want a way to cope? #BPDChat

Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
#BPDChat - @blaisemd & Gillian Galen @gillianpsyd suggest "balancing on one foot" as a grounding technique if you are experiencing Depersonalization. (from "Coping with BPD").
Kitten.capoodle @KCapoodle
@CarlDunnJr #bpdchat I learned skills in DBT skills classes. The big ones to help with disociation were 'mindfulness' (awareness that it was happening) & 'willingness' (choosing 2 come out of disociation, or fight going into it, when disociating seemed a peaceful alternative 2 being present)
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@KellyannNavarre Hi. That's a good list. Thanks for sharing. #BPDChat

What helps? Grounding techniques - using physical sensations: hold ice, wash face with water, touch something. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Aguirre & Galen suggest working on noticing when you dissociate, then mindfully (if possible) figuring out what you do when you dissociate, then figure out grounding techniques that work for you, and if you need to, reach out to someone else for help. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@cmackenzies A medical ID might be quite helpful. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
What helps? Grounding techniques - using physical sensations: Eating - sour candy, hot sauce, garlic, mints... What else? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Someone suggested that playing a video game helps them with dissociation. Do you think that would work for you? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
What are you able to do when you are dissociated? Could you call someone for support, or no? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Connection can help: Name things you see in the room, name what you can sense with your 5 senses. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
"Ice plunge": Put your face in a sink full of icy water for more than 30 seconds. (cover area around your eyes). #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
It's about finding what works for you; different things work for different people. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
How do you think mental health professionals should be trained about dissociation? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
What do you think has been left out of this discussion of dissociation? #BPDChat
Kitten.capoodle @KCapoodle
@CarlDunnJr #bpdchat when fighting disociation while driving I verbalize everything I'm seeing, thinking, doing (eg. "Yellow light. Slowing down. Red light. Checking mirror. Stopping. Blue car ahead. Black van behind.") And so on. Its Very effective for me.

Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@fluffymangoe Hm. I'm not sure. Anyone else have a thought about this? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@ariel_mondkind Great tip. That makes sense. (I'm guessing showering in cold water would be very effective, if you could stand it). #BPDChat
Kitten.capoodle @KCapoodle
@CarlDunnJr I've been considering getting a smart watch with a scheduled vibration setting to encourage body movement.... I think it will also alert me to be aware if I'm disociating when it goes off. It was actually my husbands idea that it could help me. I think it could work. #bpdchat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@theresaetcetera Yes! The questions about the recent past sound very helpful. #BPDChat
