Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
"Mentalizing" is the capacity we all have to seek to understand what's in the mind of another person (their thoughts, feelings, motivations, etc.) and to seek to understand what's in our own mind, as well. We often don't do this, instead we may assume we know. #BPDChat 1/2
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
MBT (Mentalization-based therapy) is a psychodynamic therapy developed by Peter Fonagy & Anthony Bateman). There is research that suggests MBT is effective with people w/ BPD. #BPDChat 2/2
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Has anyone here had experience with MBT (mentalization-based treatment) and with mentalizing? If so, what do you feel is important about it? #BPDChat

@AtaraxicKat Thanks for sharing that. I think that points up there are usually many different possible reasons that someone could react that way. We really don't know what they're thinking or feeling unless we ask questions, etc. #BPDChat

So mentalizing is the capability we all have to understand what's in another person's mind. #BPDChat 1/2
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Mentalizing is also the capability we have to understand what's in our own mind. #BPDChat 2/2
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Often we don't mentalize well. We text a friend and when they don't respond we jump to the conclusion they hate us. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
We can have a failure to mentalize (maybe assuming - inaccurately - we know what's in another person's mind. Or assuming - inaccurately - what's in our own mind). #BPDChat

There's also the term "hypermentalizing". This is when we are "over-thinking" and come up with a more elaborate story than is true for what is in the other person's mind. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Can you see where being able to accurately understand what another person is thinking and feeling can improve human relationships? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
It's a healthy thing to mentalize. Mentalizing often begets mentalizing (if you mentalize it may cause the other person to mentalize too). #BPDChat

Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@SpoonieZone Yes, it could be. I think we can assume how someone else is thinking in a way that is not helpful. Remember to not assume and to ask questions before thinking you might understand how the other person is feeling & thinking. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
What can be helpful in stepping into a "mentalizing stance"? 1) Being curious. 2) "Not knowing": realizing you don't know what's in the other person's mind. 3) Asking non-judgmental questions. #BPDChat

@CarlDunnJr Absolutely! I learned to do this first by not-assuming with my now 23 YO son, with whom I am very close. Our relationship is much more open and honest, especially if one of us is going through a rough patch. And far less anxiety and "work" on my end. #BPDChat

@CarlDunnJr Once you learn to do it with 1 person it becomes easier to generalize it to other people. Especially when you realize how much less time you will spend "in your head" trying to imagine what they are thinking & feeling, much of it being negative & loads of it being wrong. #BPDChat

So, you can develop a secure attachment style. You can also develop one of several insecure attachment styles. According to the theory, development of a particular attachment style early on, suggests having that same attachment style in adult relationships. #BPDChat 3/
