Caregiving.com @caregiving RT @SustainableCG: Welcome to #CareChat Tuesday! Who is with us today and who do you care for?
Caregiving.com @caregiving RT @SustainableCG: I’m Theresa and I care for my Dad who is 98. #carechat
Caregiving.com @caregiving Hi Everyone! Grateful to be here today! I help my parents and family caregivers in my work. #carechat
Theresa Wilbanks @SustainableCG Hi Denise! Glad you are here! #carechat
Caregiving.com @caregiving @SustainableCG I'm looking forward to today's #carechat!
Matt Perrin @matt_perrin Hi #carechat. I'm Matt. Care for Mom who's living with ALZ and part of my FIL's care team as he lives with Lewy Body Dementia. Glad to have made it today!
Theresa Wilbanks @SustainableCG We'll get started with Q1. What is your goto routine that helps you better manage your caregiving responsibilities? #carechat

Theresa Wilbanks @SustainableCG Hi Matt! #carechat
Jinesh Jani @Jhjani09 This is Jinesh Jani #carechat
Debra Hallisey @advocatemomdad Deb here I care for my mom #carechat
Theresa Wilbanks @SustainableCG @Jhjani09 Welcome Jinesh! #carechat
Theresa Wilbanks @SustainableCG Hi Deb! Glad you are here! #carechat
Caregiving.com @caregiving A1. While not really a routine, it's a strategy that helps me. I do my best to remember to "offer and suggest" ideas and resources to my parents. They decide if the offer and suggestion will work for them. Helpful to keep us all in a healthy place. #carechat
Caregiving.com @caregiving RT @advocatemomdad: Deb here I care for my mom #carechat

Caregiving.com @caregiving @Jhjani09 Welcome Jinesh!! How's your week so far? #carechat
Caregiving.com @caregiving @advocatemomdad Hi Deb! Good to see you! #carechat
Theresa Wilbanks @SustainableCG @caregiving I love that! I think that reminder will go onto my calendar! #carechat
Theresa Wilbanks @SustainableCG A1. I have two routines that keep the wheels from coming off. First, a morning and evening checklist that includes Dad’s meds, meals and cleaning sweep of his areas. The second is an eating routine that keeps moods and blood sugar even. #carechat
Caregiving.com @caregiving @Jhjani09 Always so nice to have a long weekend. #carechat
Matt Perrin @matt_perrin A1: Both routine's for my Mom and FIL revolve heavily around meals. Meal, activity, rest and repeat. Personally, I have a love/hate relationship with 'the routine'. Big challenge for me as a #caregiver. #carechat

Debra Hallisey @advocatemomdad A1. When I am mom's caregiver I know the days I am with her what day I manage her meds, pay her bills, go grocery shopping etc. This way it allows me to fit in additional tasks but still ensure the "must do's" get done. #carechat
Caregiving.com @caregiving @matt_perrin What do you love about it? And, what do you hate about it? (So helpful to hear these perspectives, Matt.) #carechat

Caregiving.com @caregiving RT @SustainableCG: Q2. When and why have you resisted a routine? #carechat
Jinesh Jani @Jhjani09 A1 My current caregiving responsibilities are not as intense. One routine I have is to speak to my parents everyday to check and understand all of their dr appointments. #carechat
Theresa Wilbanks @SustainableCG @advocatemomdad It helps me better manage the unexpected also! #carechat
Matt Perrin @matt_perrin @caregiving Love the comfort it provides for our parents. And for us a lot of the time too. Hate the monotony of it and how it makes our world feel so small and circular. #carechat
Caregiving.com @caregiving Q2. Right now, I'm resisting the routine of walking every day. I've been so worn out lately that I'm having a hard time finding the energy. The regular walk, though, is good for me --body and soul. #carechat

Theresa Wilbanks @SustainableCG @caregiving It is so true that it takes energy to take care of ourselves and reenergize. A real challenge! #carechat
Debra Hallisey @advocatemomdad A2. Oh I resisted even setting a routine when I first became mom's caregiver! If I set a routine, then this new life was REAL and mine going forward. #carechat
Jinesh Jani @Jhjani09 A2 The reason I find myself resisting to a routine sometimes is because I take upon myself if something goes working due to the reasons which are out of my control. #carechat
Theresa Wilbanks @SustainableCG @Jhjani09 That is a meaningful routine! #carechat
Theresa Wilbanks @SustainableCG @advocatemomdad I can totally relate! It was as if by accepting the routine i was accepting the role I wasn't ready to accept. #carechat

Theresa Wilbanks @SustainableCG Q3. What benefits have you experienced from developing and following routines? #carechat
Matt Perrin @matt_perrin A2: Don't have a good answer for this one. Nothing acute that I've been resisting. I am actively looking for ways to evolve the routine though...to break some of the afore mentioned monotony. #carechat

Caregiving.com @caregiving RT @SustainableCG: Q3. What benefits have you experienced from developing and following routines? #carechat
Debra Hallisey @advocatemomdad Q3. Routines help mom even more than me. She used to ask me when / did you do my pills, shots, etc. etc. Now she knows when it will get done which is comforting to her. She knows she can go into her drawer and fridge and see the fruits of my labor :) #carechat
Caregiving.com @caregiving A3. I find comfort in routines. With routines, I feel more in control which helps lessen my stress. #carechat
Debra Hallisey @advocatemomdad RT @caregiving: A3. I find comfort in routines. With routines, I feel more in control which helps lessen my stress. #carechat
Theresa Wilbanks @SustainableCG A3. One benefit was that I gained control over how I spend my time and as a result, have more time at the end of each day. I am acting rather than reacting and can better manage the unexpected crises. #carechat
Debra Hallisey @advocatemomdad Acting rather than reacting - love it!

Theresa Wilbanks @SustainableCG Q4. What obstacles get in the way of your routines?#carechat
Theresa Wilbanks @SustainableCG Q4. What obstacles get in the way of your routines? #carechat
Theresa Wilbanks @SustainableCG A4. When schedules get hectic it is tempting to go rogue and toss the routines, but I’m getting better at modifying and protecting them with back up plans. #carechat
Matt Perrin @matt_perrin A3: Sanity. 🤣. So much to manage. Then there's our life outside of caring (3 girls 12, 9 and 7) etc. Without routines we'd be sunk. Question we explore lots is how can we retain the value of routine while making it feel a little *less* routine. #carechat

Caregiving.com @caregiving Q4. My energy level is definitely an obstacle. Sometimes, the energy to keep my routines is just not there. #carechat
Matt Perrin @matt_perrin Truth.
Caregiving.com @caregiving @ManuelS54715767 Welcome Manuel! #carechat
Theresa Wilbanks @SustainableCG @caregiving It does take a lot of energy to keep the routines, both physical and emotional. #carechat
Debra Hallisey @advocatemomdad A4. Mom and I work hard to spend time with family/friends in her home, go out to dinner etc. So she is not feeling so isolated. Last night she told me we are hosting Easter for 12 -15 people. I love it, but I have to plan for how that additional work fits our routine. #carechat
Theresa Wilbanks @SustainableCG Q5. Was there a time that you discarded a routine? Why? What happened? #carechat
Debra Hallisey @advocatemomdad RT @caregiving: Q4. My energy level is definitely an obstacle. Sometimes, the energy to keep my routines is just not there. #carechat
Theresa Wilbanks @SustainableCG @advocatemomdad That is wonderful and a big project to fit into the schedule! #carechat
Debra Hallisey @advocatemomdad A5. When dad was hospitalized mom's routine and mine was thrown out the window. That's when I learned to ask for and say yes to help. #carechat
Theresa Wilbanks @SustainableCG I had been consistently communicating in a notebook with Dad’s aide and decided that verbal communication was adequate. Life got busy and the result was zero communication which led to disaster. #carechat

Theresa Wilbanks @SustainableCG @advocatemomdad A tough, but powerful lesson #carechat
Theresa Wilbanks @SustainableCG Q6. What do you do to protect your routines? #carechat
Caregiving.com @caregiving @SustainableCG Wow. You would think that the verbal communication would be enough. So frustrating when a disaster happens. #carechat
Caregiving.com @caregiving RT @SustainableCG: Q6. What do you do to protect your routines? #carechat
Matt Perrin @matt_perrin A4. At the beginning, everything. Now, almost nothing. Because routine is our lifeblood and key to Mom and FIL's comfort and fulfillment. Routine has become the immovable object that gets in the way of everything else. #carechat

Caregiving.com @caregiving A6. Communication has been the best way for me to keep routines. I share the importance of the routines so everyone respects them. I then learn about the routines important to my parents and respect those routines. #carechat
Theresa Wilbanks @SustainableCG @matt_perrin The routine can feel like it takes on a life of its own, controlling the day's activities. #carechat
Theresa Wilbanks @SustainableCG Q7. What would you tell your younger caregiver self about routines? #carechat
Matt Perrin @matt_perrin A6: We've learned to say no. and learned to get comfortable with doing so. #carechat
Caregiving.com @caregiving I've learned that exhaustion totally destroys my healthy eating. I've been following the 16-hour intermittent fasting which has been so much easier for me. It's a routine I can keep regardless of my energy level. #carechat
Debra Hallisey @advocatemomdad A6. Have an honest discussion with mom at the start of our weekends about what I can and can't get done on her list. Talk about who else can do it. Is this a need or want? Is this a "No, but" No, I can't get to the grocery store a 2nd time, but I'll go during the week. #carechat

Debra Hallisey @advocatemomdad Q7. Give yourself Grace. Modifying or even ending a routine that no longer serves you is OK. #carechat
Theresa Wilbanks @SustainableCG A6. I try to have a back up plan for the routines. It might involve my husband or our aide taking the responsibility. If my self-care, stay-sane routine will be disrupted, I have modified substitutions #carechat
Michelle Seitzer @MichelleSeitzer A7: Routines aren't restrictive, they're actually resources for the times when all you can do is go through the motions. #carechat

Debra Hallisey @advocatemomdad RT @MichelleSeitzer: @caregiving Yes!!! I love that, and it's so true. Giving ourselves permission instead of "condemning" ourselves with "should haves" or "wish I coulds" makes for a healthier caregiving mindset. #carechat
Michelle Seitzer @MichelleSeitzer RT @caregiving: A3. I find comfort in routines. With routines, I feel more in control which helps lessen my stress. #carechat

Michelle Seitzer @MichelleSeitzer @SustainableCG I'm sorry I missed the beginning of the chat...I love talking about routines! Great discussion, Theresa! #carechat
Theresa Wilbanks @SustainableCG RT @advocatemomdad: A6. Have an honest discussion with mom at the start of our weekends about what I can and can't get done on her list. Talk about who else can do it. Is this a need or want? Is this a "No, but" No, I can't get to the grocery store a 2nd time, but I'll go during the week. #carechat
Theresa Wilbanks @SustainableCG RT @caregiving: A6. Communication has been the best way for me to keep routines. I share the importance of the routines so everyone respects them. I then learn about the routines important to my parents and respect those routines. #carechat
Theresa Wilbanks @SustainableCG RT @advocatemomdad: A4. Mom and I work hard to spend time with family/friends in her home, go out to dinner etc. So she is not feeling so isolated. Last night she told me we are hosting Easter for 12 -15 people. I love it, but I have to plan for how that additional work fits our routine. #carechat
Theresa Wilbanks @SustainableCG @MichelleSeitzer Thanks Michelle! I'm glad you made it! #carechat |
