A1 When I'm caregiving I tend to try to squeeze more into each day and there are SO many things on the list - so I tend to shorten the time I sleep so I can get more done. #carechat

A1 I used to have a video and audio monitor by my bed so I could keep an eye on my parents. I felt like I slept with one eye open all night! And I woke up every time they made a sound even if it wasn't an emergency. Not super for getting deep sleep! #carechat

A1 #Caregiving also affects our health, which can affect sleep too. For example I have fibromyalgia & the stress of caregiving makes it flare up at times, and then there is more pain that keeps me from sleeping. #carechat

A1 Sometimes caregivers have physical strain due to caregiving tasks, we get hurt or aggravate arthritis etc and then that pain keeps us awake too! #carechat

@AmyGoyer Hi Amy! Sleep is important as a caregiver for the same reason you need to put your oxygen mask on first on a plane. You can't care for someone else if you don't take care of yourself first, and sleep is necessary for health and renewal. #carechat

A3 I put a huge amount of effort into helping Mom and Dad sleep. When they were tired they had more pain, more difficulty with cognitive functioning, they were weaker and higher fall risk. #carechat

A3 My Dad had Alzheimers, and the amount and quality of sleep he got directly affected his ability to function, communicate, understand, walk etc. My Mom had a stroke and it was the same for her. When they got tired all bets were off. #carechat

A3 My sister had sleep apnea and when she got a CPAP machine many of her other health issues were improved because she was finally getting better sleep. She wasn't so exhausted all day long and had energy to fight her other health battles. #carechat

A3. Hi everyone. I’m late but I’m here. Just got Mom down for a nap so this question is quite timely. Mom was recently suffering badly from insomnia and so I wasn’t sleeping either. Nw on a new med , she sleeps well most nights. #carechat

A3 I've tried so many things over the years to help with sleep! For my Dad, lavender essential oil in a diffuser going all night in his room made a huge difference. He awakened less and was more rested the next day. I use it too! #carechat

A4 Along with the lavender essential oil, my Dad's doctor (Dad had Alzheimers) told us to try Melatonin - a higher dose than most people use. That helped a great deal too. Didn't wake up as much and fell asleep happily. I use it occasionally when I'm jet-lagged. #carechat

@Jhjani09 A4 Great point Jinesh! What - and when - we eat can have a big effect on our sleep. Also how late we have fluids. Mom was up every 2 hrs to go to the bathroom until we focused on her getting fluids earlier in the day and cut way back on her evening fluids. #carechat

A4 I was just going to tweet about Melatonin. It was recommended for my Mom about a year ago. It worked quite well until recently when we had to add another med. still takes the Melatonin but not as high a dose.

A4 Exercise can really enhance sleep too - getting enough exercise during the day helps make us tired later. We worked hard to keep Daddy moving. I think that's part of my problem often...sitting at computer too much... #carechat

A4. The temperature of our bedroom can impact our sleep. The right temperature means we don't wake up when we're too hot or too cold. #carechat

Yes! I sleep best at 68 degrees or cooler. Realized Dad did too or he got hot and sweaty. He slept longer and better when the room was cool. #carechat

A4. I also try to focus on gratitudes and positives before falling asleep. If my thoughts fall into the "nothing's going right" trap, I'm up all night. 😫 #carechat

A4 I started listening to a "Deep Sleep" meditation from @andrewjohnson after my Mom died, and I've used it ever since - I fall right asleep. And I play a rain sound too. I started doing it for Daddy too and he woke up less and wasn't scared when he went to sleep. #carechat

A4. I also try to avoid watching or reading scary stuff. I can give myself nightmares if the last information I receive before I sleep is terrifying. #carechat

@espiegler Hi Eileen! Great to have you join us. I got my nephew a gravity blanket (a heavy blanket) as he has anxiety. He says it helps him SO MUCH to fall to sleep better! I wish I'd tried it for my Dad. We always had a fairly heavy blanket on him though. #carechat

A4Mall walking gives Mom good exercise and provides a fun activity for us both. I als find that having an easing into bedtime routine helps a lot for getting Mom relaxed for bed. Most evenings she gets int her PJs and we both watch ‘Murder She Wrote’ #carechat

@AmyGoyer Hi Amy! Sorry to be so late! That's good to know. I tried one and it felt sorta like sleeping under the lead thing the dentist puts over you during x-rays. It may just take some getting used to... #carechat

@AmyGoyer A6 My mom loved listening to radio chat shows, like the BBC, as she was falling asleep - I get that it's comforting/soothing to hear friendly voices without having to engage. Made her feel less alone in the dark. #carechat
