Please continue to introduce yourselves. The topic for tonight is "changes." How do life changes affect your diabetes, and what wisdom about such can you share with others. #dsma
Diabetes Social Media Advocacy @DiabetesSocMed
@nextwavet2d Hello, Bill! Thanks for joining in. #dsma

Q1. We know that major life changes—new job, new family member, loss of friend or family member, move to new home—can be a challenge to navigate. What's a major life change (or minor one) you've navigated w/ diabetes? #dsma
NextWaveT2D @nextwavet2d

@DiabetesSocMed #DSMA Q1. Life gets in the way of diabetes. Affects numbers, sometimes good, many times not. Best advice: hang on, ride the wave, then get back to your normal.
Dee @dmsawy
@DiabetesSocMed Dee from Philadelphia here. I usually have off on a Wednesday, so sometimes times catch a question when I’m checking Twitter, and my favorite color is red. #dsma

Q1 I've just had a major life change of moving--to a new country. Gotta find new health care providers! #dsma
Ryan Dane 🇺🇦 @ryanryeguy89
@DiabetesSocMed A1. About a few months after I was diagnosed I decided to move back home. My mom came out to Denver and we were going to make a road trip out of it but had to cut it short because my sugars kept running high. Got home and back to normal. #dsma

@hylozoists Hello!!!! Love that meme and agree 100% #DSMA
Claire Pegg @Voicemomma
@DiabetesSocMed Q1: I lost my Dad this year and was grateful every day for my insulin pump and set routine that let me just handle what I needed to without having to worry about blood sugar. 22 years of diabetes gave me the knowledge to just power through. #dsma
thelongpointgirl 🇨🇦 @thelongptgirl
@DiabetesSocMed #DSMA all close to the same time: dad died, a family members surgery didn’t go as planned, another family member had a significant health challenge and I had to write a 4 hr recertification exam. Last year sucked. Lol.
Gautam Narang @hylozoists
@DiabetesSocMed Many minor challenges require expert navigation with diabetes and this disorder is a relentless teacher, that keeps throwing lessons without any break. #dsma

Renza / Diabetogenic @RenzaS
@DiabetesSocMed Pregnancy does fun (read: really crazy) things to diabetes. We didn’t have CGM here 15 years ago, so it was just learning to check, check, check and make lots of changes. Control what I could, and breathe through what in couldn’t! #DSMA
Diabetes Social Media Advocacy @DiabetesSocMed
Q2 If you're ever had a change in where you live, how was that challenging w/ diabetes, and what tips can you share? #dsma
Better Diabetes Life @BetterDiabetes
@DiabetesSocMed A1 - #pregnancy!!! Twice!! Talk about feeling pressure to have perfect numbers. And I was working full time, travelling as a corp exec. And I was OLD (39 and 41). Yea for healthy babies and a1c that stayed 5.4-5.6 Nothing has been the same since!! #DSMA

@DiabetesSocMed #dsma.Change is hard for those who refuse to adjust to the new reality. As type1's, accepting facts, and being flexible is the best way, rather than dissipating precious psychic energy in trying to change things. This I have learnt after struggling uselessly with the unchangeable
Melissa Lee ☮️⚛️ @sweetlyvoiced
@DiabetesSocMed A2. Important to know where to go to find new HCPs, get supplies, and most importantly, keep lots of low glucose treatment nearby. The act of packing/unpacking is brutal on blood sugar and you may not have your kitchen set up or stocked yet. #dsma

Macro 🇺🇦 Four @MacroFour
@DiabetesSocMed @thelongptgirl In 2016, I was struggling due to T2 diabetes complications that affected my ability to work. A low carb diet brought my A1c down from 9% to 6% in 3 months. All my health issues resolved & that helped me cope with the serious fallout in my work life. #dsma

OK, Q3. Major change happens when we lose a friend, family member--whether death, disagreement, or simply drawing apart. Have any of these happened to you, and how have you coped? #dsma
Brenda Bell @tmana
@TheDiabetesDeal That can be stressful as well, especially if it means changing insurance. Heck, even same-job insurance changes! #dsma
Better Diabetes Life @BetterDiabetes
@hylozoists @DiabetesSocMed yes! The key is to expect change, then when it comes you are a "winner". Frustration is born when you expect things to stay the same (and they never do - diabetes or not!) #DSMA
thelongpointgirl 🇨🇦 @thelongptgirl
@DiabetesSocMed #DSMA If I got through the last year, I can get through most things life will throw at me. 3 months ago, broke my ankle. That’s where I found my diabetes difficult to deal with. That was just 1 more thing to deal with. Diabetes/mental health hard to deal with!
Ryan Dane 🇺🇦 @ryanryeguy89
@DiabetesSocMed A3. I did lose my step grand-mother. It was difficult at first, not necessarily my bg levels, but just mental. Like I had talked to her the week before and it was all so sudden. So it was more just shock for me. #dsma
Claire Pegg @Voicemomma
@DiabetesSocMed Q3: I tried so hard to treat myself the way I would treat someone else who was going through it. With kindness and patience and no expectation of perfection. Didn't always manage it but it was a helpful focus point. #dsma
Better Diabetes Life @BetterDiabetes
@DiabetesSocMed A3 - I realized a long time ago that grief was a part of #diabetes. I now understand how to navigate grief better. Step 1 - don't ignore it. Step 2 admit you deserve to have these bad feelings and then feel them and share them. Step 3 Choose to let it go. #DSMA

Melissa Lee ☮️⚛️ @sweetlyvoiced
@DiabetesSocMed A4. I would also answer “pregnancy.” Not everyone gets first trimester lows (I didn’t with either kid). Not everyone can go without insulin right after delivery. I needed to resume my basal immediately as I was ⬆️⬆️ after delivery with each. #DSMA

@DiabetesSocMed With each passing year of diabetes (34th year with diabetes) the body's response and its secretions (chemicals-hormones-enzymes) change timings, change intensity, change strength and these react in different ways with insulin. #dsma.A little awareness helps in managing diabetes.

Focusing on the elements you can control is another stage technique I used (and taught) as a vocal performer. You can’t change how others respond or the walls falling down around you, but can you manage what you are, how well you prepped, how hard you tried? #DSMA

YES!!! @joannerinker helped to bring this to Diabetes Care and Education Specialist attention when she was Diabetes Educator of the Year & we are working on bringing more awareness! Such a quality of life issue. It’s a microvascular/neuropathy combo issue.

@DiabetesSocMed Q7: Getting into advocacy. I feel powerless so often, walking into my Congressional Rep's office b/c I have important issues that need their attention helps me realize that my experience has given me expertise that few have and it feels great to share it and work for change #dsma

CT So many things masquerade as diabetes and not-diabetes. To quote and old dLife commercial, "Test! Don't Guess!" #dsma

@DiabetesSocMed I missed Q7 ? But diabetes is the best gift I have ever received. It made me realize my life matters. That I want to live this life fully. That I am not a mistake. That my needs and purpose are valid. It was almost losing my life that made me realize what a gift it is! #DSMA

Closing thoughts: Your emotions exist in response to a need that you have that is or isn’t being met. (Hat tip to @PancreasInGame.) Don’t beat yourself up for having needs or having a human response to them. #dsma

@thomasgoffe @joannerinker Yep. Here is the blog I wrote for @diabetessisters: https://t.co/oFxoTi8POH Hopefully another, kind of more detailed article for #HCP will be in an upcoming issue of AADE in Practice to get more providers asking questions and screening. #DSMA
