Beth Morton @beth_morton
Hello everyone! Welcome to #migrainechat! I’m so excited you’ve joined me! If you are new to this format, take a quick moment to review the chat guidelines: https://t.co/Wuemu2Ihop
Beth Morton @beth_morton
There are two helpful chat tips: (1) I’ll start each question with Q1, Q2, etc. You should start your corresponding reply tweet with A1, A2, etc. (2) Always remember the #migrainechat hashtag! It helps make following the conversation easier.
Beth Morton @beth_morton
Before we start with questions, let’s see who is here today. I’m Beth. I’m moderating today’s chat. I live in #Vermont, have chronic #migraine, and I am really excited to see if we have new faces today! #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton
I'm hoping @migrainesallday can sneak away from work and @migrainediva is feeling well enough to join! #migrainechat Any others? Who's here?

While you continue introductions, a few reminders. This #migrainechat is purely informational. Nothing shared should be considered medical advice or a substitution for talking with your doctor. If you don’t have one, find a #headache specialist here: https://t.co/ECwDhBTzAw

Ready for Q1? Let’s jump in! [Note: The topic is work, but if school is more relevant for you, feel free to share your experiences at college or university, too!] #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton
Q1. What tips can you share for managing work and #migraine? Have you ever requested accommodations? If so, what type(s) and were they granted? #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton
A1. This won't all fit in a tweet, but I did have accommodations granted at work (flex sched, swapped out lights, etc). I also had #FMLA. I am happy to chat more about the process and will provide links to resources at the end. #migrainechat
Jenn Heater, Chief Oddity (she/her) @Medical_Oddity
@beth_morton Q1: I no longer work, but when I did, I requested different lighting—the overhead ones were the worst #migrainechat
Krista @Kristacatlady
@beth_morton A1: I had light sensitivity before I was chronic. I always brought my own lamps and asked my coworkers not to use overhead lights. I didn't ask for other accommodations after becoming chronic because my bosses were less than understanding about my migraines. #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton
Q2. How honest are/were you with employers and coworkers about your #migraine attacks? How did they respond? #migrainechat

MissMigraine @MMigraine
A1. #migrainechat. My most recent employer was a dream. They removed lights f/the ceiling & when that wasn't enough, they put a false ceiling over my cube. It was like working in a fort. I always gave 100% & even passed out at work a few times, in return they did all they could.

@beth_morton A2: I was honest about having migraines with my bosses. They were not understanding at all. It didn't help that my doc would only write a letter to my work that I had headaches. He wouldn't say migraines. #migrainechat

A2. Once I become chronic, it was hard to hide and I had to be honest. My coworkers/bosses were generally really understanding... to a point. Once it became clear my quality of work and my health were suffering, I left my job. #migrainechat

@beth_morton I was actually up front during the interviewing process that I suffer from migraines but didn’t mention how often. It’s a huge risk so be careful. Thankfully someone else at the company also gets migraines so there was some compassion. #migrainechat

@beth_morton A1. It’s been several years since I have worked with #migraine, but what I did do was work with the lights off to help with #photophobia. I ate small meals to keep my blood sugar from crashing and I took small stretching breaks. #migrainechat
Jenn Heater, Chief Oddity (she/her) @Medical_Oddity

@beth_morton A2. I was very open about having migraine with my supervisors. At the time I was episodic so attack’s weren’t all too intrusive at work, but they understood why I would need certain accommodations to help me be more productive. #migrainechat
