Carly Flumer (she/her) @carlyflumer
@patientchat I would say when you’re overwhelmed with information you’re receiving from a care team. It could also be emotionally-related where treatment or caregiving starts to feel like a burden. #patientchat

@patientchat T1: I'd say signs of patient burnout can be: - not following up on new symptoms or doctor appointments - being weary of seeing new doctors - feeling negative emotions when letters related to health arrive (doctors, administrative bodies, insurances) #patientchat
Alan Brewington @abrewi3010
A1 instead of working together with everyone included and advocate reverts back to an us vs them methodology. #patientchat

@patientchat T1 #patientchat pls define burnout or give examples. Unsure.
Patient Chat @patientchat
@zebrafinch Burnout can be characterized by emotional exhaustion, constant stress, and frustration of disease management #patientchat
Ody @OdyO11
@patientchat T1: Also, not having the energy to fight for one's access to healthcare and for one's rights. Because it's very often a fight. Especially with a rare(ly diagnosed) disorder, nothing comes easy. It's a lot of administrative work. #patientchat
Carly Flumer (she/her) @carlyflumer
@OdyO11 @patientchat Yes, ughh I think anyone automatically feels burnout with insurance. A topic of #healthliteracy! #patientchat

@carlyflumer @patientchat Well, and of the literacy of those who decide on your behalf, write reports on your behalf etc... You're so often at the mercy of other people and feel powerless. I think that's a driver of burnout. #patientchat

@patientchat T1 #patientchat As a patient, I experience burnout primarily from seeing doctors. My illness caused a lot of subsequent problems, and doctors are generally limited—don’t listen, give too little thought and time, and most of all, resist learning, were taught poorly.

RT @patientchat: @zebrafinch Burnout can be characterized by emotional exhaustion, constant stress, and frustration of disease management #patientchat

Patient Empowerment Network @power4patients
@patientchat A2: From my perspective, once you receive a diagnosis, it's always waiting for the proverbial other shoe to drop #patientchat
Ody @OdyO11
@carlyflumer @patientchat Yes - it's a lot of work which requires time, and it's a lot of emotional work and of feeling powerless due to the circumstances. I think patient burnout definitely is a thing. #patientchat
mary @zebrafinch
@patientchat T1 #patientchat re burnout Information overload has to be managed. I’m continually having to simplify my life, protocol, etc. Compliance is work, hourly work. Forever. Re: drs not listening, no excuse—I speak clearly. Many friends, family, are physicians! I was a bio major.
Melissa VanHouten @melissarvh
Feeling like you have no control or that it is too much work to try to change things; overload of appointments & the travel which sometimes accompanies them; feeling like your continued care is a burden upon you & to your significant others. #patientchat

T3: What would you like health care professionals (HCPs) to know about patient burnout? #patientchat https://t.co/zK16WkuYWL

T2: I think a main driver of patient burnout are to feel powerless, especially to be at the mercy at people who have power over you but who don't exercise care to do you justice. There's something very derogatory about that. #patientchat
mary @zebrafinch
@patientchat T2 #patientchat drivers of burnout largely for people who don’t have public insurance—the stress of paperwork, the noncoverage, the constant fight to pay for care. doctors not caring or listening. I would add that there are few good diagnosticians. Perpetual cycle of wrong dx.
Carly Flumer (she/her) @carlyflumer

Ody @OdyO11
@patientchat T2: An important driver of patient burnout is medical PTSD, retraumatization and doctors overriding consent. For patients who have a history of misdiagnosis of psychogenic illness it's a very sensitive topic when doctors assume stress/negative emotions. #patientchat
Carly Flumer (she/her) @carlyflumer
@patientchat Talk with other advocates and patients in support groups both online and in-person. Often, we can find others who are good though the same thing. #patientchat
Spencer Health Solutions @spencerhealth
For many patients, just finding the time to arrange a visit to the doctor's office is stressful and involves arrangements with work, family, transportation. If this has to be done frequently, this can result in burnout on many parts. "Not again?" #PatientChat
Ody @OdyO11
@patientchat T2: Another driver of patient burnout is to constantly be seen with deficit-expecting bias, to be blamed or to be seen as incompetent, especially in encounters with doctors. And, generally: Ableism. Which is very prevalent in the medical field, unfortunately. #patientchat

A2: #patientchat economic poverty causing deprevation or greater hardship in getting the basics for living, interpersonal relationship problems, medical scheduling difficulties like phone tag to try & make or reschedule appointments & worsening symptoms.
Ody @OdyO11
@ZebraOrphans Yes! I wish this would be differentiated, and I wish there would be resources available that don't mix this up. E.g. access to psychologists for coping with patient burnout, without the risk that it's treated as if stress would cause your symptoms. #patientchat

T6: Let’s not forget about care partners, what are some tips to help pre-empt care partner burnout? #patientchat https://t.co/DRsE3kxB7N
Ody @OdyO11
@carlyflumer @patientchat I mean to be seen as if you're not coping well, as if you're stressed, anxious, depressed, when in fact you aren't. As if you can't be knowledgeable about your disorder or body, or as if it's detrimental that you get in touch with other patients/read research. #patientchat
Belarusian Spy @MalkaBeth
A3: That it's often not the medical problems that are the greatest burden,it's deprevation level poverty which makes it at times impossible to be "fully & promptly compliant"poverty problems aren't what we expect you to fix but to allow for the extra time they need. #patientchat
Ody @OdyO11
@carlyflumer @patientchat In other words: As if you're doing something detrimental to yourself. It's a way of gaslighting, of being treated as if you weren't competent - in matter that directly affect yourself: your body perception, your feelings, your coping. #patientchat
Carly Flumer (she/her) @carlyflumer
@OdyO11 @patientchat Ahh, yes, that’s common for sure #patientchat
Ody @OdyO11
