RaquelRoschell @raquelonpurpose @patientchat Hello! Raquel in TX living with Arthritis and Lupus. Glad to have stumbled upon the chat. #patientchat
Carly Flumer (she/her) @carlyflumer @patientchat I would say when you’re overwhelmed with information you’re receiving from a care team. It could also be emotionally-related where treatment or caregiving starts to feel like a burden. #patientchat
mary @zebrafinch @patientchat Define the burnout pls. #patientchat Q1
mary @zebrafinch RT @patientchat: I will introduce new Topics with T1, T2...Please include corresponding T# at the front of every answer - hard to remember but helpful! #patientchat
mary @zebrafinch RT @patientchat: T1: T1: What are the signs that you or a loved one may be experiencing patient burnout? #patientchat https://t.co/FLivdZq4b2
Ody @OdyO11 @patientchat T1: I'd say signs of patient burnout can be: - not following up on new symptoms or doctor appointments - being weary of seeing new doctors - feeling negative emotions when letters related to health arrive (doctors, administrative bodies, insurances) #patientchat
Alan Brewington @abrewi3010 A1 instead of working together with everyone included and advocate reverts back to an us vs them methodology. #patientchat
mary @zebrafinch @patientchat T1 #patientchat pls define burnout or give examples. Unsure.
Patient Chat @patientchat @zebrafinch Burnout can be characterized by emotional exhaustion, constant stress, and frustration of disease management #patientchat
Ody @OdyO11 @patientchat T1: Also, not having the energy to fight for one's access to healthcare and for one's rights. Because it's very often a fight. Especially with a rare(ly diagnosed) disorder, nothing comes easy. It's a lot of administrative work. #patientchat
Carly Flumer (she/her) @carlyflumer @OdyO11 @patientchat Yes, ughh I think anyone automatically feels burnout with insurance. A topic of #healthliteracy! #patientchat
Melissa VanHouten @melissarvh T1 Feeling more exhausted & anxious than normal; lack of interest/motivation or feeling as if you can no longer make a difference in your situation; frustration; not taking care of your medical or personal needs. #patientchat
Carly Flumer (she/her) @carlyflumer @OdyO11 @patientchat Yes, and a lot of research! #patientchat
Trisha Bundy @bundytr5 RT @melissarvh: T1 Feeling more exhausted & anxious than normal; lack of interest/motivation or feeling as if you can no longer make a difference in your situation; frustration; not taking care of your medical or personal needs. #patientchat
Ody @OdyO11 @carlyflumer @patientchat Well, and of the literacy of those who decide on your behalf, write reports on your behalf etc... You're so often at the mercy of other people and feel powerless. I think that's a driver of burnout. #patientchat
Patient Empowerment Network @power4patients RT @patientchat: T1: T1: What are the signs that you or a loved one may be experiencing patient burnout? #patientchat https://t.co/FLivdZq4b2
mary @zebrafinch @patientchat T1 #patientchat As a patient, I experience burnout primarily from seeing doctors. My illness caused a lot of subsequent problems, and doctors are generally limited—don’t listen, give too little thought and time, and most of all, resist learning, were taught poorly.
Ody @OdyO11 RT @patientchat: @zebrafinch Burnout can be characterized by emotional exhaustion, constant stress, and frustration of disease management #patientchat
Carly Flumer (she/her) @carlyflumer @OdyO11 @patientchat For sure. Comprehension is such a problem, which leads to poorer outcomes. I’m looking to change that. :) #patientchat
Patient Chat @patientchat T2: What are the drivers of patient burnout? #patientchat #patientchat https://t.co/doebJHQW5O

Patient Empowerment Network @power4patients RT @patientchat: T2: T2: What are the drivers of patient burnout? #patientchat #patientchat https://t.co/doebJHQW5O
Carly Flumer (she/her) @carlyflumer @patientchat Not understanding what your care team (doctors, nurses, insurance, hospitalists, etc.) are saying, feeling misunderstood, not being heard or having feelings being considered. #patientchat
Patient Empowerment Network @power4patients @patientchat A2: From my perspective, once you receive a diagnosis, it's always waiting for the proverbial other shoe to drop #patientchat
Ody @OdyO11 @carlyflumer @patientchat Yes - it's a lot of work which requires time, and it's a lot of emotional work and of feeling powerless due to the circumstances. I think patient burnout definitely is a thing. #patientchat
mary @zebrafinch @patientchat T1 #patientchat re burnout Information overload has to be managed. I’m continually having to simplify my life, protocol, etc. Compliance is work, hourly work. Forever. Re: drs not listening, no excuse—I speak clearly. Many friends, family, are physicians! I was a bio major.
Melissa VanHouten @melissarvh Feeling like you have no control or that it is too much work to try to change things; overload of appointments & the travel which sometimes accompanies them; feeling like your continued care is a burden upon you & to your significant others. #patientchat
Alan Brewington @abrewi3010 A2 being chronic and advocate can be to much. Both are highly expensive human experiences. #patientchat
mary @zebrafinch Amen | |
Patient Empowerment Network @power4patients RT @melissarvh: Feeling like you have no control or that it is too much work to try to change things; overload of appointments & the travel which sometimes accompanies them; feeling like your continued care is a burden upon you & to your significant others. #patientchat
Carly Flumer (she/her) @carlyflumer @zebrafinch @patientchat It helps so much to have a science background! But to those who don’t, I cannot imagine. #patientchat
mary @zebrafinch RT @patientchat: T2: T2: What are the drivers of patient burnout? #patientchat #patientchat https://t.co/doebJHQW5O
mary @zebrafinch @patientchat T1 #patientchat Sorry I completely misread that. :-(
mary @zebrafinch RT @melissarvh: T1 Feeling more exhausted & anxious than normal; lack of interest/motivation or feeling as if you can no longer make a difference in your situation; frustration; not taking care of your medical or personal needs. #patientchat
Patient Chat @patientchat Topic 3 (T3:) coming up…https://t.co/ohwSUGNsmW #patientchat
Patient Chat @patientchat T3: What would you like health care professionals (HCPs) to know about patient burnout? #patientchat https://t.co/zK16WkuYWL
Ody @OdyO11 T2: I think a main driver of patient burnout are to feel powerless, especially to be at the mercy at people who have power over you but who don't exercise care to do you justice. There's something very derogatory about that. #patientchat
mary @zebrafinch @patientchat T2 #patientchat drivers of burnout largely for people who don’t have public insurance—the stress of paperwork, the noncoverage, the constant fight to pay for care. doctors not caring or listening. I would add that there are few good diagnosticians. Perpetual cycle of wrong dx.
Carly Flumer (she/her) @carlyflumer @patientchat To take things one step at a time. To listen to us clearly and take consideration for the emotional side of care. To talk to us using language we understand. To give us a plan that will help us with our new “normal”. #patientchat
mary @zebrafinch RT @melissarvh: Feeling like you have no control or that it is too much work to try to change things; overload of appointments & the travel which sometimes accompanies them; feeling like your continued care is a burden upon you & to your significant others. #patientchat
Patient Chat @patientchat @zebrafinch No worries! You're doing great :) #patientchat
mary @zebrafinch RT @patientchat: T3: T3: What would you like health care professionals (HCPs) to know about patient burnout? #patientchat https://t.co/zK16WkuYWL
Melissa VanHouten @melissarvh T3 Patient burnout is likely similar to physician burnout. We experience the stress and burdens of meeting our health needs as well -- only we are trying to do all this while we are sometimes very ill. #patientchat
Ody @OdyO11 @patientchat T2: Drivers of patient burnout: - when other perceive your needs as wants repeatedly - being doubted - having to correct mistakes done out of carelessness by others all the time which affect your basic needs (there's sth. very derogatory about these) #patientchat
Patient Safety 🇨🇦 @pttopt Interesting, we hear a lot of doctor burnout , which I do understand. #PatientBurnout is real too, can't do one more appointment , scan , unless my entire body is viewed as a whole , by a multidisciplinary team who actually listens to me and cares. #PatientExperience
Ody @OdyO11 RT @patientchat: T3: T3: What would you like health care professionals (HCPs) to know about patient burnout? #patientchat https://t.co/zK16WkuYWL
mary @zebrafinch @patientchat T3 #patientchat we want drs to know we do NOT WANT to be sick. We can be too tired to fight for ourselves. We need them to seek, to ask, to care. And to show it.
mary @zebrafinch T3 #patientchat Yes. We want drs to :
mary @zebrafinch Worn out now. Can’t continue. Thanks for this chat, always. #patientchat
Patient Empowerment Network @power4patients Here's a great post from our Empowered! blog "What You Should Know About Caregiver Burnout and How to Avoid It" https://t.co/QUie5MjsRf #patientchat
Ody @OdyO11 @patientchat T3: It is a lot of work to be a patient, both regarding time needed and emotional work. I'd like doctors to know how much work and distress sloppy or incorrect documentation can cause patients and how it contributes to patient burnout. #patientchat

Ody @OdyO11 @patientchat T3: I'd like doctors to know that believing patients, being accessible, supporting patients in their personal goals can help prevent patient burnout. I'd like doctors to ask patient how they can help ease the burden. #patientchat

Patient Empowerment Network @power4patients Here's another great resource from our Empowered! blog from the fantastic @JBBC "Beating Burnout: Self-Care Strategies for Patient Advocates" https://t.co/LurN1pO3R1 #patientchat
Ody @OdyO11 @patientchat T2: An important driver of patient burnout is medical PTSD, retraumatization and doctors overriding consent. For patients who have a history of misdiagnosis of psychogenic illness it's a very sensitive topic when doctors assume stress/negative emotions. #patientchat
Carly Flumer (she/her) @carlyflumer @patientchat Talk with other advocates and patients in support groups both online and in-person. Often, we can find others who are good though the same thing. #patientchat
Spencer Health Solutions @spencerhealth For many patients, just finding the time to arrange a visit to the doctor's office is stressful and involves arrangements with work, family, transportation. If this has to be done frequently, this can result in burnout on many parts. "Not again?" #PatientChat
Ody @OdyO11 @patientchat T2: Another driver of patient burnout is to constantly be seen with deficit-expecting bias, to be blamed or to be seen as incompetent, especially in encounters with doctors. And, generally: Ableism. Which is very prevalent in the medical field, unfortunately. #patientchat
Sabrina Peterson @_ripheather RT @OdyO11: @patientchat T1: @patientchat T1: I'd say signs of patient burnout can be: - not following up on new symptoms or doctor appointments - being weary of seeing new doctors - feeling negative emotions when letters related to health arrive (doctors, administrative bodies, insurances) #patientchat
Ody @OdyO11 @patientchat T4: Find doctors who support you, and whom you can contact easily. If possible, allow for vacations, for times when the organizational side of your health management can be put aside. #patientchat
Patient Chat @patientchat Topic 5 (T5:) coming up…https://t.co/ohwSUGNsmW #patientchat
Ody @OdyO11 RT @ZebraOrphans:
Carly Flumer (she/her) @carlyflumer @spencerhealth Yes, I had to tell my employer when I first started about my diagnosis. Otherwise, they would wonder why I’m taking off so often. That definitely feels like a burden. #patientchat
Melissa VanHouten @melissarvh T4 Don't overschedule or add unnecessary appts during particularly rough spells; talk 2 loved ones & HC providers abt your feelings & enlist their help in completing tasks if possible; do what you can when you can & don't beat yourself up abt not accomplishing enough #patientchat

Carly Flumer (she/her) @carlyflumer @patientchat I use the calendar on my phone religiously for everything. There are different apps to help manage emotions, but I think it would be profitable to have apps developed for specific diseases, especially in the world of #rare, #chronic, & oncology. #patientchat
Belarusian Spy @MalkaBeth A1: #patientchat Arguments occurring over things that they don't have strong opinions on & sleep patterns changing .

Patient Chat @patientchat Topic 6 (T6:) coming up…https://t.co/ohwSUGNsmW #patientchat
Belarusian Spy @MalkaBeth A2: #patientchat economic poverty causing deprevation or greater hardship in getting the basics for living, interpersonal relationship problems, medical scheduling difficulties like phone tag to try & make or reschedule appointments & worsening symptoms.
Ody @OdyO11 @ZebraOrphans Yes! I wish this would be differentiated, and I wish there would be resources available that don't mix this up. E.g. access to psychologists for coping with patient burnout, without the risk that it's treated as if stress would cause your symptoms. #patientchat
Carly Flumer (she/her) @carlyflumer @melissarvh Yes, I have at least 4 different portals, which have been lifesaving! #patientchat
Patient Chat @patientchat T6: Let’s not forget about care partners, what are some tips to help pre-empt care partner burnout? #patientchat https://t.co/DRsE3kxB7N
Ody @OdyO11 @carlyflumer @patientchat I mean to be seen as if you're not coping well, as if you're stressed, anxious, depressed, when in fact you aren't. As if you can't be knowledgeable about your disorder or body, or as if it's detrimental that you get in touch with other patients/read research. #patientchat
Belarusian Spy @MalkaBeth A3: That it's often not the medical problems that are the greatest burden,it's deprevation level poverty which makes it at times impossible to be "fully & promptly compliant"poverty problems aren't what we expect you to fix but to allow for the extra time they need. #patientchat
Ody @OdyO11 @carlyflumer @patientchat In other words: As if you're doing something detrimental to yourself. It's a way of gaslighting, of being treated as if you weren't competent - in matter that directly affect yourself: your body perception, your feelings, your coping. #patientchat
Carly Flumer (she/her) @carlyflumer @OdyO11 @patientchat Ahh, yes, that’s common for sure #patientchat
Ody @OdyO11 @patientchat T6: Don't feel guilty about what you can't do. Don't blame your partner and don't be disappointed when your partner can't do things (this will cause arguments). Look after yourself. Find new things you can enjoy together. #patientchat
Melissa VanHouten @melissarvh RT @ZebraOrphans:
Belarusian Spy @MalkaBeth T5: #patientchat - online appointment scheduling of all medical & other aid programs- including transportation assistance would help. Likewise virtual appointments from home as an option would help.
Patient Critical Co-op @PatientCritical @Ctzen_Improver Whatever works, it’s time to do that and recharge. Can’t be there for others if you don’t take care of yourself. Very important to recognize the early signs of burnout - much easier to deal with before burnout gets a solid hold into you. #patientchat

Belarusian Spy @MalkaBeth A3: #patientchat currently I'm trying to fix water pipe leaks as I cope with my car that's not running & I maybe needing spinal surgery - the spinal problems are slow moving& the water leaks far more urgent.
Ody @OdyO11 @patientchat T5: A quick and easy options to ask your doctor a question would be very helpful (e.g. via Email), without having to struggle with gate-keeping receptionists first. Also, the option to proofread and correct mistakes in medical reports. #patientchat

Carly Flumer (she/her) @carlyflumer @patientchat CT: Patient and caregiver burden is real. It’s important for us to express ourselves in ways that help us feel understood & communicate if we need help. Our health status is already burdening, especially in the oncology world. #patientchat

Ody @OdyO11 @patientchat CT: It's important to differentiate between patient burnout and the symptoms of the disorder. I wish there was support available which differentiated, without risking that symptoms of the disorder are dismissed by doctors as "caused by stress". #patientchat
Belarusian Spy @MalkaBeth T6: allow time to heal from routine medical appointments & routes to do so- eating a meal out or seeing a movie/live theater during that day or afterwards as a celebration/treat to ease things helps. #patientchat
Ody @OdyO11 @patientchat T2: Having health problems that aren't easily diagnosed is a huge driver of patient burnout. Be it rare(ly diagnosed) disorders or unusual representations. It means to be dismissed, disbelieved, to search for knowledgeable doctors, to travel far for appointments. #patientchat
Ody @OdyO11 @patientchat T2: Having a little known disorder means having to explain all the time, receiving little empathy, being doubted, disbelieved and encountering expectations you can't meet. It means there are no decision algorithms in place for diagnoses, therapy, aids. #patientchat
