RT @patientchat: T1: T1: What role does nutrition play in your health? What comes to mind when you think about nutrition? #patientchat
Carly Flumer (she/her) @carlyflumer
@patientchat T1: I think nutrition plays a role in whether I relapse or not. I’ve read books and studies and heard lectures about the importance of nutrition to maintain remission. #patientchat

T1: What role does nutrition play in your health? What comes to mind when you think about nutrition? #patientchat https://t.co/MB33xyHurc
WWP @wwp
@patientchat T1 Optimal nutrition is our most critical and controllable strategy for overall health, disease treatment & prevention, & performance for life. It's our most natural performance enhancing drug, impacting our energy, mood, sleep, and long-term health. #patientchat
Christina Lizaso @btrfly12
T1: Nutrition is definitely something on my mind as a previvor. Resources have been hard to find. Some doc's downplay nutrition but how well I feel each day and my energy levels impact my state of mind in addressing other health issues. #patientchat
Carly Flumer (she/her) @carlyflumer
@btrfly12 For sure! I find that some foods can make me feel sluggish. #patientchat
Christina Lizaso @btrfly12
T1: Seeing a nutritionist has been on my radar since my genetic predisposition to cancer diagnosis but I guess I haven't known where to start/haven't made it a priority. #patientchat
Carly Flumer (she/her) @carlyflumer
@btrfly12 Try @LifewithCancer! They’re amazing and offer all kinds of services. #patientchat
Christina Lizaso @btrfly12
T1: When I think about nutrition - what comes to mind is it being a pain/a chore. I already had to cut processed sugar out in my 20s and so I've never been excited about making any more food changes. But I know I am feeling better since making some of those changes. #patientchat
Patient Chat @patientchat
T2: There seems to always be a new fad in nutrition, so how can you determine fad from fact? #patientchat https://t.co/oNYKoJEEu8
Christina Lizaso @btrfly12
T2: I try to keep on my radar what cancer groups are including in their conferences and webinars. Like I heard a presentation on the mediterranean diet at a genetic counselor run conference. #patientchat
WWP @wwp
@patientchat T2 In many cases, the most popular fad diets all have a tremendous amount of overlap and are in agreement on 80-90% of the Rx. #patientchat
Christina Lizaso @btrfly12
T2: I also just try to see if the diet seems to make sense. And also if it makes sense for me. With exercise/diet/etc. - the one that is best for me is the one I will actually do :) #patientchat
Carly Flumer (she/her) @carlyflumer
@btrfly12 I had to eliminate A LOT of what I normally ate during treatment, so I was limited to a very healthy diet. I’ve just tried to maintain it since. When you know you can’t have something because it’ll affect your treatment, you just do it. #patientchat
WWP @wwp
@patientchat T2 A dietary fad that claims to be the one ultimate truth should always be scrutinized. All diets can work for weight loss. Yet, this shouldn’t be the defining characteristic of success. #patientchat
WWP @wwp
@patientchat T2 Paleo, keto, vegetarian, vegan, Whole 30… all have elements of truth and will be successful for weight loss. #patientchat
WWP @wwp
@patientchat T2 Whether you call it clean, optimal, natural, or whole, the ideal Rx is to eat foods as close to their original source, cooking when necessary. Minimize the intake of overly processed, chemically laden foods when possible. #patientchat
Christina Lizaso @btrfly12
#patientchat :
Carly Flumer (she/her) @carlyflumer

T2: Whether your doctor brings it up or not, it is a good idea to bring up any nutrition changes with your doctor and make sure how those go with any treatments. Pharmacists might have some input too re: diets and meds you are on. #patientchat

Patient Chat @patientchat
T3: Is there an optimal diet? What are some of the essential foods for building and maintaining health? #patientchat https://t.co/OI8spK1v6c
Richard Kreis @kreisr1
RT @btrfly12: #patientchat : #patientchat :
Carly Flumer (she/her) @carlyflumer
T3: A diet that is sustainable and mainly plant-based. Less processed foods and ingredients you can’t pronounce. #patientchat
WWP @wwp
@patientchat T3 An optimal eating strategy contains sufficient macro and micronutrients, a wide variety of plant sources, maintains ideal body composition, and is one that you can stick to. #patientchat

RT @wwp: @patientchat T1 Optimal nutrition is our most critical and controllable strategy for overall health, disease treatment & prevention, & performance for life. It's our most natural performance enhancing drug, impacting our energy, mood, sleep, and long-term health. #patientchat
WWP @wwp
@patientchat T3 Plant food sources are the most nutrient dense with vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals. Since they’re most often low in caloric density, they should be consumed daily, in wide variety, and account for 75-85% of a plate. #patientchat
WWP @wwp
@patientchat T3 Carbohydrates are the most readily absorbed, usable sources of fuel for the brain and working muscles. The importance of good carbohydrate sources shouldn’t be minimized in an optimal diet. #patientchat
Pamela Littlefield @Splash102598
@carlyflumer Carly, I think I am really not doing this tweet thing correctly!? #patientchat
Christina Lizaso @btrfly12
T3: Are there reputable nutrition apps? For cancer survivors, I think @DanaFarber has a recipe app. There are also a couple books re: cooking while on chemo that I hear about. I'm looking for something more general as a previvor. #patientchat
Christina Lizaso @btrfly12
@Splash102598 @carlyflumer Hi Pamela - Glad you are on today's chat. As long as you add the #patientchat to your tweet, everyone who is here can see and interact with you about this topic. :)

T4: How does nutrition impact the day to day for patients? #patientchat https://t.co/JmD3aofsQg
Carly Flumer (she/her) @carlyflumer
@btrfly12 @DanaFarber I haven’t seen any specifically for cancer, but the @MyFitnessPal app is great! I also read about one in @AACR’s @CancerTodayMag called @Fooducate. #patientchat
Carly Flumer (she/her) @carlyflumer
T4: Food is a source of fuel, so choosing the right balance of ingredients an help maintain energy. #patientchat
Pamela Littlefield @Splash102598
@btrfly12 @carlyflumer Awesome! Thanks Christina! What is the tie in with nutrition and @wwp? #patientchat
WWP @wwp
@patientchat T4 Optimal nutrition is the most healthy, cost effective strategy for impacting long-term disease prevention and treatment. Nutrition is a critical factor in controlling blood glucose and lipids, inflammation, sleep, and stress. #patientchat
WWP @wwp
@patientchat T4 The research validates impacts to blood pressure, diabetes, heart health, cancer, and a number of other maladies. A genetic predisposition may load the gun. Lifestyle, of which nutrition plays a major role, pulls the trigger. #patientchat
Christina Lizaso @btrfly12
T4: The impacts vary - with high impact for Diabetes or Gastroparesis for example. I think, though, that day to day nutrition can have a big impact on well being/quality of life. (1/2)... #patientchat
Pamela Littlefield @Splash102598
RT @btrfly12: #patientchat : #patientchat :
WWP @wwp
@patientchat T4 A patient can optimize their doctor's treatment Rx through the consumption of a nutrient rich diet. #patientchat
Christina Lizaso @btrfly12
...(2/2) T4: and in turn, your illnesses/diagnoses can make it hard for you to keep on track with daily food intake/habits. When I get busy or have a lot of appointments, it messes with my strict food schedule for my blood sugar and then things snowball. #patientchat

T6: Back in 2015 #gyncsm had a chat on Nutrition and Exercise for gynecologic cancer patients. Here's a recap with resources links shared at the time: https://t.co/AjOVtruEAN #patientchat
WWP @wwp
@patientchat T6 Drink 2 glasses of water when waking in the morning. The body is often dehydrated after 8 hours of sleep. Maintain good hydration throughout the day. #patientchat
WWP @wwp
@patientchat T6 Consume a variety of nutrient dense plant foods as close to their original state as possible, cooking when necessary. Minimize the consumption of heavily processed, chemically laden foods, caffeine, alcohol, and calorie-rich drinks. #patientchat
WWP @wwp
@patientchat T6 Healthy nutrition is often made complicated by the overabundance of information available and a westernized food industry that thrives on excess consumption. #patientchat
Christina Lizaso @btrfly12
T6: #gycnsm also had a chat this year on "Supplements / Vitamins Are they helpful?" https://t.co/rfK0C96FT3 #patientchat
WWP @wwp
@patientchat T6 The convenience and relatively low cost of sugary, salty, and fatty foods has created an epidemic of epic proportions. Getting back to the source of real food consumed in ideal proportions is our secret weapon for health and longevity. #patientchat
Christina Lizaso @btrfly12
T6: When looking for resources, the government has some really well put together information and I think people often overlook that. There is a .gov for about everything in general and also health topic specific. Many do have nutrition resources and tools. #patientchat
Christina Lizaso @btrfly12
RT @wwp: @patientchat T6 Consume a variety of nutrient dense plant foods as close to their original state as possible, cooking when necessary. Minimize the consumption of heavily processed, chemically laden foods, caffeine, alcohol, and calorie-rich drinks. #patientchat
Christina Lizaso @btrfly12
@wwp @patientchat I start out every morning with water before anything else and it has really helped me. I also consume another 40oz of water by 1pm and then try to keep up some later. My body lets me know when I haven't stuck to it because it is used to it now. #patientchat
Christina Lizaso @btrfly12
I know some really can't stand just plain water, but there are ways to slightly flavor that are still healthy. #patientchat
