Time to start our topics. Here comes T1: #patientchat
Patient Chat @patientchat
T1: What recent healthcare trends have you noticed come to the forefront in light of the pandemic? #patientchat https://t.co/bz3ZuXm65K
Abner Mason @abnermason
T1: The most notable trend to materialize during COVID-19 is the push toward health equity. This issue simmered on low heat, among people who care most about it, even as health disparities ravaged underserved communities. Now, it's front & center, with gov support. #patientchat
Adam Johnson - DadVocate @RareDiseaseDad
@abrewi3010 Hey Alan! Nice to see you here. Glad you got your first shot! I got my second one on Wednesday, so I feel your pain. 😉 It really did a number on me, but it's way better than the alternative! #patientchat

A1 I think/hope there has been an improvement in active listening since so much of the pandemic has involved being alone. Active listening is the antidote to loneliness. #patientchat

Abner Mason @abnermason
@abrewi3010 Active listening is among the first steps to doing right by any patient, so this is certainly good news. #patientchat

Topic 2 (T2:) coming up..... #patientchat
Adam Johnson - DadVocate @RareDiseaseDad
@patientchat T1: It's not necessarily that recent, but since the start of the pandemic, telehealth has been an integral part of managing my #RareDisease care. Seeing my specialists from around the country would be off the table without it, & my son does PT virtually now as well. #patientchat
Marni Cartelli @Purrfectly_Rare
#patientchat A1. Well as I stated in my intro, healthcare systems & even Drs R only allowing pts at apts This is problematic bc many times pts need support advocating, understanding, retaining, or telling information I understand safety is reasoning but this=about safety 2
Patient Chat @patientchat
T2: What specific healthcare trend do you hope continues to develop after the pandemic and why? #patientchat https://t.co/85Bo0MuD0Q
Alan Brewington @abrewi3010
A1 I’m not sure if trend is the right word but I think the pandemic has showed us the draw back of checkbook healthcare. Care needs to become a human centered right, not a checkbook right. #patientchat

T2: Health equity has to become more of a priority. COVID-19 shows what happens when we ignore underserved communities: sickness, hospitalization, death. But this cycle occurs for many other conditions. We need a stronger approach to beating health disparities. #patientchat

Patient Chat @patientchat
T3: Is there any healthcare trend you believe will do more harm than good? #patientchat https://t.co/2Nm1l97fJB
Marni Cartelli @Purrfectly_Rare
@abnermason I agree this=most important&1 of the greatest things 2 come from Pandemic Even when I was in school there=always a line about "health disparities",yet there was no real push 2 close gaps Covid provided empirical evidence of these disparities over a single event #patientchat
Alan Brewington @abrewi3010
A2 before the pandemic I think access was defined as getting those already able to afford care on to telehealth or better access to their EHRs. Access is now meaning make sure everyone has access to the same level of care. #patientchat

#patientchat
Abner Mason @abnermason
T3: Misinformation & disinformation isn't new in healthcare, but it's more prominent than before COVID. This contributes to vaccine hesitancy. Frankly, it kills. If we don't take steps to combat misinfo, patients will pay the price. #patientchat

R.M.C. Inc @RMCAwareness
T3 Patients not being able to access out of state hospital for treatment because of the type of insurance they have is a problem. #patientchat
Alan Brewington @abrewi3010

@RareDiseaseDad @patientchat #patientchat Yesss!!! #telehealth has become a vital tool in many communities However we need to protect it bc ins. Co's have started to decrease reimbursement for these visits bc they saw an increase in usage. Now Drs are being forced to have in face apts in order to get paid

@acserrao76 T3: Yes! Every other industry is abandoning the one-size-fits-all approach (Netflix and Amazon, to name a couple of businesses). Healthcare needs to get the message and do the same. It only helps patients. #patientchat
Alan Brewington @abrewi3010

@renudhinakaran @patientchat Excellent points, Renuka! Beyond access to a wider variety of specialists & locations, the added benefit of saving time & corresponding energy (that is precious & limited) is a huge plus for these appointments. Thanks for adding your valuable perspective here! #patientchat
DenetraHampton @ProducerNurse
A4: Acknowledgment and placement of nurse scientist on boards. Period. This role is vital to bridging the gap....@patientchat #patientchat
Abner Mason @abnermason
T4: 2 things: engaging patients who are from underserved communities & hiring healthcare stakeholders from those communities. When we listen to patients, we can do more for them. Especially when the org includes people who look like, talk like & live like them. #patientchat
Alan Brewington @abrewi3010
A4 human centered design thinking will move us towards eliminating health inequalities. We need more, how might WE... vs I want a billion dollars for producing a random X for the market. #patientchat
Marni Cartelli @Purrfectly_Rare
A2. #patientchat I think we need to protect & refine #telehealth & its reimbursement system Telehealth has opened up many opportunities 4 patients but at the same time does have limitations we must accept We must recognize how it can & should fit in healthcare as a valuable tool
