@patientchat This is a great question - these terms get used quite a bit in cancer communities. Whatever term/label feels right to you, use it! #patientchat

@patientchat T1. #patientchat I think a person should use the words that motivate them. Some of these I like and some of these I dont, but it is personal opinion and they are emotional words not scientific/medical terms, so it will be different for each of us, imo.
Amanda Crowell Itliong @MIShouldTalk
T1 I hate the war and battle references with a passion. We should be celebrating the strength and perseverance of those with terminal or chronic disease at least as much as the one and done patients who “won” or “beat cancer.” #patientchat

T1 Our current prevailing cancer language really assumes that patients have much more direct control over their disease than we really do. It’s insulting to those of us who have difficult to treat, high recurrence, or always terminal cancers. #patientchat

@patientchat T2. #patientchat To me, a person who survives, especially a person remaining alive after an event in which many others have died would be the definition of a survivor, like the 2001 attacks on a macro scale, or a school shooting on a micro scale.

T2 and T1 I really disagree with everyone. Language that reinforces the idea that patients have more direct control over their health than we actually do (win, beat, kick cancer’s ass) really messes with the minds of many patients! It’s constantly pushed at everyone. #patientchat
