![]() | Alan Brewington @abrewi3010 T1 I don’t mind them as much as others do. With platforms like Twitter, we need words that save space but help paint the picture of my current story. #patientchat |
![]() | Alicia C. Staley @stales @patientchat This is a great question - these terms get used quite a bit in cancer communities. Whatever term/label feels right to you, use it! #patientchat |

![]() | Barby Ingle Official @BarbyIngle @patientchat T1. #patientchat I think a person should use the words that motivate them. Some of these I like and some of these I dont, but it is personal opinion and they are emotional words not scientific/medical terms, so it will be different for each of us, imo. |
![]() | Amanda Crowell Itliong @MIShouldTalk T1 I hate the war and battle references with a passion. We should be celebrating the strength and perseverance of those with terminal or chronic disease at least as much as the one and done patients who “won” or “beat cancer.” #patientchat |
![]() | Alicia C. Staley @stales Good article here on the "war", "battle" metaphors in cancer #patientchat: #patientchat https://t.co/cSS1KF7CpY |
![]() | Patsy Hinson @patsyhinson T1 we are all different. No “right language” or approach IMO. Use whatever gets you thru. #patientchat |
![]() | Alicia C. Staley @stales Don't forget to tag your tweets with #patientchat if you are following along and want to join the conversation. |
![]() | Lesley Kailani Glenn @LesleyKailani I always use the NCI's definition, a survivor is someone from the time of diagnosis until death. I live with stage IV MBC and survive every day. #patientchat |
![]() | Amanda Crowell Itliong @MIShouldTalk T1 Our current prevailing cancer language really assumes that patients have much more direct control over their disease than we really do. It’s insulting to those of us who have difficult to treat, high recurrence, or always terminal cancers. #patientchat |

![]() | Barby Ingle Official @BarbyIngle @patientchat T2. #patientchat To me, a person who survives, especially a person remaining alive after an event in which many others have died would be the definition of a survivor, like the 2001 attacks on a macro scale, or a school shooting on a micro scale. |

![]() | Amanda Crowell Itliong @MIShouldTalk T2 and T1 I really disagree with everyone. Language that reinforces the idea that patients have more direct control over their health than we actually do (win, beat, kick cancer’s ass) really messes with the minds of many patients! It’s constantly pushed at everyone. #patientchat |
![]() | Alicia C. Staley @stales @patientchat T3: Try to stay in the moment, go day by day. You can only live one day at a time, so focusing on what you need to get through each day is helpful. #patientchat |

![]() | Patient Chat @patientchat T4: Transitioning out of active treatment may create more questions than answers for some. What resources did you depend on during this time? #patientchat https://t.co/U421lLcEAP |
![]() | Patient Chat @patientchat [REDACTED USER] Thanks for joining, Nigel! #patientchat |
@JillZitzewitz @patientchat T1: I’m not a big fan of “battle” or “fighter” because having cancer is something you have to learn to live with, not something you win or lose at. “Journey” or “survivor” are okay. Usually, I just say “I’m a cancer patient.” #mmsm #patientchat
@ @LesleyKailani Stage 4 here too. Progression is the fear. I always say there is no cure "right now" and try and focus on my hope for new treatments and a cure. #patientchat
![]() | Alicia C. Staley @stales @patientchat T4: Make sure to stay connected with your healthcare team - ask questions if you need more information or have any concerns about a new symptom/feeling etc. Be proactive in maintaining these connections. #patientchat |

![]() | Alicia C. Staley @stales @patientchat T4: Stay engaged with a patient community - find a local support group, or join one online. The shared sense of experience can be healing and very helpful as you navigate the world when treatment is completed. #patientchat |
![]() | Alicia C. Staley @stales @patientchat T4: Transitioning from active treatment to "treated" can be very stressful, in some cases you might have been going to the hospital or cancer center on a daily or weekly basis. The change in schedule can be tough to navigate and that's okay! #patientchat |

![]() | Barby Ingle Official @BarbyIngle T3. Is scanxiety the fear of going back for check-ups. I've Never heard this term, & I never want to go back, I do my scans & checks for my husband, because he wants to know. I dont want to know, because then I have to go through something I never want to face again. #patientchat |
@JillZitzewitz T2: I think of a survivor as anyone living with cancer, whether they’re just starting treatment, have been in remission for a long time or have relapsed. Survivors are alive and living each day to the fullest! #mmsm #patientchat

![]() | Patsy Hinson @patsyhinson T3 I always have something fun planned to look forward to. Actually, recurring was somewhat easier because I relied on this. #PatientChat |
![]() | Danielle Karber @danielle_dk @stales That was a great article! I wish more cancer “muggles” understood that. She only had one thing wrong. Soldiers DO have to go into battle without proper equipment. Happens way too often 😢 The article is still 💯% great!! |
![]() | Alicia C. Staley @stales @BarbyIngle Yes, "scanxiety" is the term for the anxiousness/nervousness many patients feel when returning for a yearly scan. #patientchat |
![]() | Barby Ingle Official @BarbyIngle T4. #patientchat only my instincts, I was not ready to share or talk about the experiences for a while after. |
@sl3limitless @patientchat I’m speaking from the autoimmune space - my scans are annual. I try not to think about it until there’s something (lesions/organ damage) identified to deal with. Meditation and Xanax are my friends. #patientchat
![]() | Lesley Kailani Glenn @LesleyKailani @stales @BarbyIngle Yep...just had my scans yesterday and this am. I get mine every 6 months. #patientchat |
![]() | Barby Ingle Official @BarbyIngle T5 #patientchat - I know we are all hear for a purpose. Once someone has completed their purpose on earth, they go to heaven, we don't know how or when that will be, so everyday I wake up is a day to make a difference on earth for myself and other humans. |
