Good evening everyone. Welcome to #ukmedlibs journal club. Please tweet an introduction. It’s @tomroper here at the controls, Clinical Librarian at @BrightonSx_LKS
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
Tonight we look at a paper from @JrnlMedLibAssn, which you can find online at https://t.co/UWrwjNcTpb #ukmedlibs

@scaredycait Welcome! All modes of participation are valid at #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
So, first impressions. What did you make of the paper? #ukmedlibs. We have some questions at https://t.co/Akgz7ED7XI which may focus the discussion
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
@gshlibrarian One of the authors! #ukmedlibs. We’re honoured. Thanks for taking the time to join us
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
So #ukmedlibs, what do you think are the factors leading to closures and mergers?
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
Either as described in the paper, or more generally #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
@samanthaclare That certainly comes out of most, if not all, of the case studies #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
@gshlibrarian Interesting. Can you explain the challenges a little? #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
Reading the paper, though, I was struck by the way the US system seems to make the situation more complex and threatening #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
@gshlibrarian This was perhaps once the case here too. For example one would often find dedicated PCs in hospital libraries for the exclusive use of university staff/students #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
@gshlibrarian We seem to have made some progress towards equity of access #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
We seem to have moved on to Q2, which is about equity of access #ukmedlibs So carry on! Don’t forget the hashtag, by the way, or your insights won’t make it to the transcript or be seen by others

RT @SueLaceybryant:
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
#ukmedlibs @gshlibrarian tells us that one of their priorities in the US is data collection. What about us? Do we understand the trends? (Q3, paraphrased)
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
As well as the data collection that Knowledge for Healthcare do, CILIP has done a lot on workforce, etc. But it’s not always easy to find #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
I’m going to move us on through the questions, to keep us to time. Q4: this surprised me: The discussion mentions public librarians as “a threat or as collaborators”. #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
Here public libraries have borne the brunt of cuts, closures and deskilling #ukmedlibs So hard to see them as a threat. And we’re doing a lot of work with them on patient and public information
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
Q5 #ukmedlibs I was struck by the complexity - I might even say anarchy of the US system. Do we think the NHS helps us? National approach?
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
Once more, with hashtag #ukmedlibs Q6: And we have @CILIPHLG and the parent body @CILIPinfo: do we think they have roles to play?
Andrea Harrow @gshlibrarian
@UKMedLibs Sad to hear that. Public libraries are sanctuary #medlibs #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
We run #ukmedlibs for an hour. So I’m going to throw the last question in, Q7: What have we learnt from the paper that might be applicable to a British setting?
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
How can we safeguard access to the knowledge base of health care for NHS staff, patients and the public? #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
Some great contributions tonight #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
Thanks a lot for your contributions. The transcript will capture any tweets up to 9:15 pm, so by all means keep talking. The transcript and analytics will go up tomorrow. Special thanks to @gshlibrarian for joining us. #ukmedlibs
